About Projekt Neptun
In 2001 ETH Zurich launched Projekt Neptun with the objective of equipping ETH students with high quality mobile computers. To ensure that
the hardware meets the quality requirements a thorough evaluation and testing scheme was developed in which both the hardware and the
manufacturer services are assessed in detail. Between 2005 and 2007 Projekt Neptun was gradually opened to all members of higher education
in Switzerland. In 2011 the ETH spin-off company “Stonepine Labs GmbH” was founded with the goal of continuing the operation of Projekt Neptun and further developing it. Stonepine Labs is run by longtime Neptun employees and the Association of Students of ETH Zurich (VSETH).
Quality
Neptun aims to equip students with a laptop that will last throughout their studies without the need for repeated replacement. It is our belief
that both the student’s budget and the environment profit from this objective.
Manufacturer-Independent Evaluation
A whole range of different criteria that are likely to be of particular interest to a student’s everyday life (e.g. robustness, battery life, performance,
weight,...) are taken into consideration during the evaluation process and the careful selection of the recommended hardware. The evaluation
committee consists of IT professionals and student representatives of various educational institutions. This is designed to ensure that the selected
devices meet specific requirements for individual study programs, such as e.g. the use of professional graphics cards in certain models.
Neptun Wave
The hardware that is recommended by Projekt Neptun can be acquired during two waves each year which take place at the beginning
of each semester. By limiting the purchase periods to these two waves it is possible to offer the selected hardware at extremely competitive
discounts. There is no limited stock of the specially configured devices.
Demo Days
As the recommended hardware can only be purchased online Projekt Neptun embarks on a road show during each sales wave showcasing
the devices at institutions of higher education throughout Switzerland. The team members are onsite to answer questions and give out recommendations to anyone who requires assistance in acquiring a new device.
Support & Help Points
Neptun customers benefit from a whole range of support service offerings. Neptun provides assistance via e-mail and / or telephone. For oneon-one support students and other members of higher education institutions may stop by at one of our three Help Points in Zürich, Lucerne or
Basel. Please see projektneptun.ch/help-points for further information.
Neptun Software Service
The Neptun Software Server gives Neptun customers free access to a full version of an antivirus software (for both Mac and PC) as well as a
commercial backup program (for PC laptops). The corresponding web page also links to a host of recommended open source / free programs
and hosts installation images for selected Neptun laptop models.
It is the aim of Projekt Neptun to equip students with the highest quality devices best suited to their specific study program and that last
throughout their student life. Our second objective is to provide quick, low priced and effective help should a Neptun customer encounter
difficulties with their device. The services of Projekt Neptun are available to all members of higher education institutions in Switzerland - both
