with a co-crew leader the Storrie Student Trail Crew, Summer Program. This program is in partnership with the Plumas
and Lassen National Forest.
Job Description:
SBTS is looking for a dynamic instructor for our award winning Student Trail Crew. The Storrie Student Trail Crew program is an exciting opportunity for local high school students residing in the Northern Sierra.
For those students accepted, students are paid to live, work and learn in the local mountains. Trail building, tool maintenance, watershed, erosion, camping, CPR, Backcountry First Aid, meal planning, and nutrition are among the broad topics
covered during the (8) week course.
Responsibilities and attributes:
• The successful Instructor/Leader applicant will join an established instructor with further support provided by the amazing
staff and crew of SBTS
• Works closely with Trail Programs Director and Forest Service Storrie contact to define annual priorities
• Works closely with SBTS food consultant for menu, scheduling, pick-up and drop off and all other food related items
• Ability to co-lead a crew of 10 students throughout the program (ages 15-18)
• The ability to work with diversity within a crew
• Posses good communication skills with students and co-crew leader
• Ability to adapt and be flexible in a variety of situations
• Oversees the health and safety of the crew at all times
• Checks in regularly with the Trail Programs Director and FS contact when in cell area or with FS radio
• Manage work projects professionally
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
Tasks require a variety of physical activities in an outdoor setting including but not limited to: hiking with a pack, lifting,
reaching, communication and self-care. Trail work is hard, physical labor. It involves working with hand tools, and getting
dirty is guaranteed. Work frequently involves the possibility of experiencing exposure to poisonous plants, bruises, muscle
strains, cuts and scrapes, sunburn, and insect bites.
Qualifications:
• At least 21 years old
• Hold current CPR certification
• WFR or higher level of certification
Should Have:
• Trail Building experience
• Outdoor Education/Leadership experience including safety evaluation and assessment, group facilitation and
management, conflict resolution, empathy
• Knowledge of local mountains including history, flora & fauna
