Potentate’s Message....
Greetings, Brothers, Nobles and Ladies,
2015 is going by like a blur. Its hard to believe its April already and what a
successful year we have already had. Our 2015 Potentate’s Ball was a great success
with over 300 in attendance. Thank you to everyone who participated helped and
honored Donna and myself. It has truly been and honor serving this year.
Our circus was also a great success best ticket sales and show so far. Also
again thank you to everyone for their support and help. The Easter Egg Hunt what
can I say “WOW” 90 kids and 200 adults. Thank you goes out to special people who
make it a success, Choo Choos - donation and rides / Keystone Cops - Rides / Racers
- donation and help / Jokers and Characters for their support being here for our kids.
A big thank you to Dwight, Yvonne, Maggie Carpenter, Steve Daniels to mention a few. Thank you very
much. All of the above have been photographed and are now in the new and improved Jamil website still under
construction. Thank you Otis and Raford for your time and dedication.
These are just a few of the projects and events we have done this year with many more to come. April
is our Golf Tournament in conjunction with the Eastern Star, for Greenville Hospital. We also have the Grand
Lodge in Charleston, our 1st Santa Cause supper April 24, and temple clean-up on May 2. We will need anyone who would like to help be here Saturday by 8:30 am bring your chainsaws, hedge cutters, axes, rakes, basically any yard tool you have. 200 cubic yards of crush-n-run has been donated for the back of the building and
grassy area for the BBQ cook-off. This will need to be spread, any one with a tractor with box blade or front
end loader would like to help. Please let me know. Rooms have been booked for ceremonial at Iris Festival in
Sumter — SASA rooms has be booked at Crown Reef Resort and events for SASA are still in the works
from mid-winter.
We are very fortunate to have a Temple of strong, committed Nobles who want to help make us bigger
and better this is where I’m asking for your help, we need everyone to get out and “Beat the Bushes” and all
1200 of us bring in 1 candidate this year, whether it be by reinstatement, new noble, and or affiliation. If you
will do this it will continue to make Jamil Shrine Temple “The Best of the Best” if anyone can set up a shrine
night in any lodge or civic meeting we will be happy to set-up a seminar, this will help grow all aspects of our
fraternity to build membership. Remember Nobles this is your Temple and we need to take pride in what we
have done in the past, present and for the future success of Jamil Temple.

From the Chief Rabban...
Welcome to spring! It’s hard to believe it is already that time of year where the
pollen has left us and the warmer temperatures are on their way. However, before the
pollen came and went, we had a lot going on here at Jamil.
At the end of January, we had a wonderful time at Illustrious Sir Lenoard Walker’s Potentate’s Ball. He and his lovely Lady Donna planned a beautiful day and evening
full of fun and fellowship. The weekend allowed many of us to catch up with both Jamil
nobility and nobility from visiting temples.
February was a month full of activities, including the circus planning meeting, a
Valentine’s Steak Dinner run by the Chef’s Unit, and then of course, the 2015 Jamil Shrine Circus. It goes
without saying that the success of our circus reflects the hard work and dedication of all who in some way help
with it. Thanks to all who were able to come out and lend a helping hand this year!
Shortly into March, we headed over to the Camden Car Show to help with concessions. The day started out a little rainy, but it ended up being a pretty decent. If you did not have the opportunity to come out in
March, they have planned a “re do” in May; hopefully the weather will be a little more inviting to the crowds
that day! Not long after the car show, a group of us headed to Pigeon Forge for Mid-winter SASA, where
there was great discussion about building membership in our temples. Again, it is always good to spend a
weekend with Shriners from near and far, all working to support our clubs, temples, hospitals, and most importantly, our patients!
As I write this article, we are heading into mid-April. It was a great start to the month with the annual
Jamil Easter Egg Hunt, which had a great turn out this year! I was able to enjoy some vacation time with the
family in Disney, and then returned to the Chef’s Unit “Chili Cook-off.” Congratulations to Nobles Jim Yoak,
Curtis Hutchinson, and Andrew Herman for their winning dish, and thanks to all who came out to enjoy the
evening in the lounge. After the tasting, Noble Charles Buckner presented the information for the 2016 Jamil
Cruise! We hope you all will consider joining us for a fun-filled, relaxing week at sea next February; we appreciate Charles, Jim, and the planning committee for helping organize what is sure to be a wonderful time.
Sadly, over the last few months, we have lost several nobles that will be greatly missed. Where we can
find comfort in knowing they are in a much better place, we will miss seeing them here at Jamil, doing what
they love to do…helping the children. May we continue to honor these great men through our hard work and
dedication to the Shrine organization and our patients.
We look forward to our upcoming events including the Camden Car Show and the Spring Ceremonial
in Sumter. If you are able to come, we would love to see you!
Godspeed,
Lance Carpenter
THE HAPPENINGS IN THE JAMIL LOUNGE
by the Lounge Lounger
Well, 2015 started out good, just as 2014 ended. On the Friday before the Potentates Ball, the Jamil
Wheels provided the food in the Lounge, and there was a lot of people here that we haven’t seen in a while, as
they were here for the weekend to attend the Ball. Then on Sunday after the Ball, the Lounge was open, so we
could have a Super Bowl party. We had a nice crowd, and it was a great game, but a lot of people didn’t like the
way it ended. Oh well, stuff happens.
In February we had a Circus meeting, and then a steak supper on Friday night, and a Valentines party on
Saturday, and all of the ladies received a flower carnation to wear. Then in March, we had a St. Patrick’s Day, it
seemed like everyone brought food, and we had a lot of people to eat it. Then the following Saturday, we had a
birthday party for three people, and again a ton of food. The whole St. Patrick’s week was a lot of fun.
Monday, and Tuesday, during the week is sometimes a little slow, but the rest of the week is fine, and we
are open some Saturdays, just check ahead of time, so come see us.

From the Assistant Rabban….
Nobles and Ladies,
It is that time of year again. Time to get outside and enjoy the warming
weather. As you do so, I hope you also take an opportunity to come out and enjoy all the things going on with Jamil.
Thank you to everyone who assisted in any way with Circus. It was another great Circus where everyone had a great time while raising some money for
Jamil. Also, thank you to all who came out to the Cars 2 Dreams Car Show in
Elgin. There was a bit of rain but we still had a lot great people there and a lot of nice vehicles. Most
important, we raised money for the hospital.
If you did not have an opportunity to come to the Cars 2 Dreams Car Show in March, there is
good news. We are having another Cars 2 Dreams Car Show on May 16th. I hope to see everyone
who came out in March along with many more. I would love to see all units and shrine clubs represented there in Elgin, with one of your motorized vehicles to show to the public.
Also, in May we have another very important event. That’s right, Ceremonial is coming! It’s
time to round up those candidates. If you know someone that may be interested in being a Shriner or
if you know someone you believe is deserving of being a Shriner please help them begin that process.
We hope to see a lot of current Nobles and their families in Sumter along with plenty of new candidates.
Well, that is all for now. If there is anything Tiffany and I can do for you please let us know. We
look forward to seeing you at Jamil!
Yours in the Faith,
Curtis Hutchinson

of eggs and kids. And again thanks to those who put in the hours and hard work - "GREAT JOB" the kids had

Jamil Shriners
Dear Nobles:
The Board of Governors, staff and children of Shriners Hospitals for Children - Greenville wish to
express sincere appreciation for the 7 wheelchairs received on March 18, 2015.
Children are precious! Since our responsibility is great in caring for these special patients and their
families, we are especially grateful for your gift on behalf of this cause. It’s exciting to realize that the
Shriners Hospitals “team” actually extends to so many individuals and groups, and it takes all of us working
together to keep the process moving forward.
Again, thank you. We are deeply grateful for your interest in and support of the Greenville Shriners
Hospital and the children we serve.

From the Oriental Guide….
Greetings Nobles and Ladies,
It is hard to believe that it is already April. It has been a fast and fun filled start to
the year. We have had the Potentates Ball, Circus, Car Show and Easter Egg Hunt to
name a few. I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in making them a success.
Stephanie and I attended the Oriental Guide School in Tampa, FL during the first
week of March. The both of us enjoyed getting to meet all of our counterparts from other
temples. We also brought back plenty of homework to keep us busy for a while.
As I am writing this, we are preparing for Stephanie to be installed as Queen of Arabi Temple No. 141.
I would like to say congratulations to her and the ladies. I know it will be a great year. Thank you ladies for all
you do to help support our children, our temple and our hospitals.
Looking forward, in May, we have the spring ceremonial in Sumter at the Gamecock Shrine Club. The
parade will be on Friday night. I look forward to seeing all of the units lit up and meeting the new nobles and
their ladies.
In the not too distant future, we will be having the BBQ Cook-off on October 2 and 3. If you would like to volunteer or have some ideas, please contact me. So far, we have started selling door prize tickets for a smoker
grill that can be seen in the temple office. We also have a 2nd place prize of a tail gate grill. In the next few
days, advanced tickets will be available for the event and butts. Stay tuned for more details.
In closing, I would like to thank everybody for all you do to make our temple successful.
Yours in Faith,
Stuart Smith
From the Chief Aide……….
Well, Easter has come and
gone along with a very successful Egg
Hunt by the kids. Thanks to all who
helped. Normally Don Addyman
would be running the ship. Unfortunately Don passed away the end of
February. Our Potentate, Lenoard
Walker and wife Donna stepped in
and continued the tradition.
Kudus to Noble John Bowker,
due to him and others, Jamil was recognized for achieving Gold in Membership. John gave an excellent
presentation at the Mid-Winter SASA
in Pigeon Forge, TN. Well done
John.

My name is Julie Bowker and I will be taking her place. I am a mother of 6 boys and 1 granddaughter.
I am from Kissimmee, Florida and have been in Columbia for 18 years. I have a degree from High Port University in theatre production. I am a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Demolay
Mom and a Rainbow adult worker and on the membership team here at Jamil Temple with my husband John
Bowker.
Just a reminder, we rent the auditorium, potentate’s room and the classrooms (upstairs) to Shriners as
well as outside people and vendors. So if you are looking for a venue to hold an event, wedding, birthday party, Christmas party, tradeshow and /or other events, please feel free to contract me about renting any of the
rooms.
In terms of the building, please bear with me as I learn the “ins and outs” of the building and all the
stuff that is here and who it belongs too.
I look forward to working with everyone.
