Steady Growth
Manitobans are lucky to have so many
career options,
but how do you choose the best one for
you? Start by thinking about what you like to do. Many of the most
successful people have turned their passions into careers. If you like
what you do, it won’t feel like “work.”
You already know the kinds of things you like to do. You are probably
already doing some of them – helping others, working with computers,
organizing sport and recreation, working with animals, serving your
community – just because you enjoy them. Think about turning your
interests into career education and training that will make your future
working life much more than just a job – but instead, a fulfilling,
rewarding career.

Explore Your Options
It’s never too early to start thinking about your career path. As a high school
student, you can get a head start on your career training through the
province’s High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP). HSAP, and Provincial
Accreditation Through High School (PATHS), are two program options that let
you earn credits toward your post-secondary apprenticeship program – and a
high school diploma – all at the same time.
Earn While You Learn
HSAP provides paid, on-the-job training
with an employer who will give you
valuable, real-life experience in your
trade of choice.
The program provides both trade skills
training and credits toward your high
school diploma, so you can graduate
and get started on your career path.
PATHS offers skilled trade development in
the classroom, along with credit toward completing
an apprenticeship. For example, when you finish
the automotive service technician PATHS program,
you will earn credit for Level One technical training
when you register as an apprentice in the
Automotive Service Technician program.
Apprenticeship Manitoba offers training in
55 skilled trades, leading to certification as a
journeyperson in your chosen field. You can apply
for apprenticeship at any time, so opportunity is
always knocking on your door to career success.
For more information about apprenticeship
opportunities in Manitoba, along with details
of the numerous grants, bursaries and financial
incentives available to apprentices and employers
alike, visit manitoba.ca/tradecareers.
Building for Tomorrow
summer camp program
B
uilding for Tomorrow is a summer camp program for youth between the ages of 13 and 16,
funded by the Manitoba government. Participants learn about the skilled trades - such as
carpenter, cook, plumber, automotive service technician and hairstylist - through fun, hands-on
activities.
More information about who will be offering the summer camps in 2015 will soon be available
at manitoba.ca/tradecareers.

The Many Faces of
Success
Apprentices are helping
Mark grow his business.
Mark Ryckman
knows the value of
apprenticeships. Mark
began his career in
plumbing and heating
as an apprentice, so
when he started his
own business, he knew
just where to turn to
find skilled staff.
Mark gained valuable
skills and experience
as an apprentice and
became a certified
journeyperson. He
continued his career
development with the
company before his
career path led him to
start his own business.
“I got my start as an apprentice,” says Mark. “And,
today, apprentices are a big part of my work. It’s
a great way to bring in young people, work with
them to develop their skills and keep them and their
expertise around as a part of the team.”
The owner of Ryckman
Plumbing and Heating
in his hometown of
Souris, Mark became
an apprentice with a
local company after
he graduated from
high school.
10
Each year, Mark
gives two to three
apprentices the
opportunity to
learn their trade
and gain work
experience at his
company. He says
hiring apprentices is
a cost-effective way
to recruit skilled
workers and grow
his company.
“The program
was a great help
to me, so I would
recommend it to
any tradesperson
thinking of
starting their own
business,” says
Mark. “Being
self-employed has
its challenges, but I
wouldn’t change it
for the world.”
Cortney Olson
worked at several jobs
before she decided she
would much rather
have a career.
With help from the
Manitoba government,
she is now on her way
to a rewarding future as
a certified electrician.
Apprenticeship
Manitoba helped
Cortney access
technical training by

also helped her find
an employer open

“I have a lot of family
members and friends
who work in the
trades, so I thought it
might be something
I would like to do,”
says Cortney, a
resident of Warren.
“I found that I
really liked electrical
work because
it is interesting,
challenging and gives
me a lot of career
options.”
Cortney is building a
better future for herself
as an apprentice.
Kyle Hiebert is a
high school senior at
St. Norbert Collegiate
who knew a great
opportunity when he
saw one.
Kyle is finishing high
school and learning
a trade.
From a young age,
Kyle loved working
with his hands. He
grew up on a farm in
Howden, about 25 km
south of Winnipeg,
where hands-on
work became second
nature.
SteadyGrowth.ca
In high school,
Kyle’s aptitude for
mechanical work
inspired an interest
in shop class, where
he began thinking
about his future and
a possible career in
a trade. Through
Manitoba’s High
School Apprenticeship
Program he began
getting paid, practical
work experience
as a sheet metal
apprentice, while
also earning his high
school diploma.
“Succeeding in the trades has nothing to
do with gender, but with setting goals
for yourself.”
Cortney’s
apprenticeship is
allowing her to learn
a trade, gain practical
work experience and
be a part of several,
high-profile projects.
She is proud to
have been part of
the electrical crew
that worked on the
Winnipeg Police
Service headquarters,
the Metropolitan
“I started my
apprenticeship in
the summer and
continued it right into
school,” says Kyle.

and the new Women’s
Hospital.
“The support of

Manitoba allowed me
to change direction
and build a better
future for myself, right
here at home. With
the right training and
certification, there are
so many doors open
to me.”
with his work that the
company called his
school to offer three
or four more students
the same opportunity.
“I love it. I’m getting experience that looks
good on my resume and will help me land
a good job close to my family.”
Kyle isn’t the only
one happy with
his participation in
the High School
Apprenticeship
Program. His
employer, Ambassador
Mechanical Corp.,
has been so pleased
“The program is
working out great
for me,” says Kyle.
“For any student who
is interested in picking
up a trade while still in
school, there isn’t an
easier way than this.”
