Congratulations to Erika Hitchcock,
2008 Citywide Teacher of the Year
As a teacher, my true motivation is always to provide the best quality education possible and this drives me to develop authentic learning
experiences which expand out to our local community and beyond. Having the responsibility and opportunity to be an integral part of so
many children’s lives is a great honor. I am so proud of the teaching profession and privileged to be engaged in instructing, inspiring,
and befriending students throughout the district. Erika Hitchcock, 2008 Citywide Teacher of the Year
We offer our congratulations to our 2008 Citywide Teacher of the Year Erika Hitchcock! A visual arts teacher, Hitchcock teaches gifted students, grades 3
through 8, at Old Donation Center. A four-year veteran teacher, with all of her years spent teaching in Virginia Beach, Hitchcock came to education from
the business world. She spent nine years as a graphic designer prior to becoming a teacher. Fortunately for the education profession, Hitchcock decided that
she wanted a career that would lend itself to interaction and connection with others, so she returned to college to earn an art education degree.
According to ODC principal Gloria Harris, Hitchcock is most accomplished in creating authentic,
stimulating conceptual units of study for her students. As an example, Harris cites the Lion King
unit developed by Hitchcock. Not only did Hitchcock design her lessons around the visual arts
with costume design and stage settings, she also involved her students in the production so they
could experience the collaboration between the artists and dancers and choreographers. After seeing the play, meeting the actors, having the opportunity for a question/answer session with actors,
musicians, and directors, the visual arts students then collaborated with the ODC dance students
to create their own performances, complete with costumes and elaborate set designs. “Erika
Hitchcock creates an atmosphere where authentic learning takes place. Her classroom is nurturing
and all students are respected, encouraged, and challenged to develop their talents,” says Harris.
Erika Hitchcock learns that she is 2008 Citywide Teacher of the Year
from Assistant Superintendent Christine Caskey and Superintendent Merrill.
Hitchcock maintains that she teaches “through the arts.” She works hard to find ways to use the
visual arts as tools to guide students in expanding their knowledge base. Hitchcock also pushes
her students to consider the world with a critical perspective so that they appreciate diversity,
practice personal reflection, and think beyond the obvious. The prime teaching objective for
Hitchcock is to ensure her students become critical thinkers and lifelong learners. From every
indication, they do.
Congratulations to Our 2008 Teacher of the Year Finalists…
Meet our teacher finalists! Each is a master teacher and was selected from among our very best teachers in the school division, our 87 teachers of the year from
our individual schools. The process by which the final candidates are chosen is extremely rigorous, especially when it involves narrowing a field of outstanding
teachers to only five. To do so, the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee reviews the applications of all participants
in a blind process, measuring each teacher against an objective rubric. Once the Committee has narrowed its choices
to 10 semifinalists, the next step is to conduct site visits. Each of these 10 teachers is observed in action in the classroom
by Committee members. Once again, the field is narrowed as the Committee measures each teacher against an objective
rubric and arrives at five finalists. The Selection Committee then meets individually with each of the five finalists in an
interview process through which they strive to get a complete picture of the candidate, personally and professionally.
Based on the information they glean, they make their final selection of the Citywide Teacher of the Year.
Congratulations to all who participated in this process: our individual teachers of the year from each school,
the 10 semifinalists, and our 2008 Citywide Teacher of the Year finalists, each a prototype of teaching excellence.

The Teacher of the Year Selection Committee is a committed and dedicated group of professionals who devote many hours to the process of selecting the citywide
teacher of the year. Although the task is very rewarding, it is also extremely demanding in terms of time and the level of work and expertise that is demanded.

Calling All Exemplary Publications
For the third consecutive year, the Department of Media and Communications Development is sponsoring its awards
program – Exemplary Publications – to recognize “exemplary” school newsletters and promote best practices in
publication writing and design. Many schools and organizations have participated during the past two years, and
we are hoping even more will submit their newsletters for evaluation this year.
As you may recall, seven criteria comprise a rubric against which each newsletter is measured. The seven criteria are
layout, content, timeliness, accuracy, marketing, organization, and graphics/photos. Each criterion is rated on a scale
of one to five, with five being the highest. We are pleased that VBCPS graphic designer Georgia Liguid-Miller,
Department of Curriculum and Instruction English specialist Fran Sharer, and Virginian-Pilot Beacon editor
Victoria Hecht will serve as evaluators.
In the interest of continuous
improvement, we elected last
year to expand the number
of exemplary publication
award levels so that a greater
number of quality newsletters
could be recognized. Currently,
the three levels that may be
awarded include an Exemplary Gold, Exemplary Silver, or Exemplary Bronze designation.
You will find the evaluation rubric that will be used as well as instructions for entry submission on page three.
In addition, we have printed the Entry Submission Form. You may also download this form from the Web site

We encourage all those who produce newsletters to enter. We will announce the results in our December 2007
edition of Kaleidoscope so that newsletter editors may use their banner from January 2008 through December 2008.

Bus Road-e-o in High Gear for School
Division Bus Drivers!
Department of Transportation Services bus drivers hit the road on April 21 during the 6th Annual
Allen Basnight Memorial School Bus Road-e-o
held at Larkspur Middle School. Twenty-two bus
drivers from the school division competed in a
variety of driving skill exercises such as backing
up, parallel parking, pupil stop, railroad crossing,
stopline, straight-line, offset alley, and diminishing clearance. The School Bus Road-e-o has one
ultimate goal: to reduce the number of crashes,
and injuries in pupil transportation.
Cheryl Ruffin had the highest score for conventional
contestants, followed by Sue Baker, and Kellie
Westerman. Tyler Reynolds claimed the top title
for a transit contestant. A transit contestant drives
one of the school division’s commercial type buses
that is used for transporting students participating
in various school activities. All four drivers qualified
to compete in the Regional Road-e-o. During the
regional competition, Kellie Westerman placed first
in the conventional bus category and Tyler Reynolds
earned a first-place title for the transit bus category.
Reynolds and Westerman now move on to compete
in the Virginia State Competition in July.
Congratulations to all the bus drivers who
competed in the 2007 Road-e-o!

We are very fortunate in the Virginia Beach City
Public Schools to have outstanding staff who
consistently demonstrate their extraordinary
capacities for dedication, expertise, and professionalism. In every discipline, teachers and administrators are regularly invited to provide sessions
for professional development but also formal
presentations, keynote addresses, and papers
at conferences, conventions, symposiums,
locally as well as regionally, nationally,
and even internationally. We are spotlighting several staff members who
have recently served as presenters.
Office of Psychological Services
school psychologist Jami Morgan
(pictured right) presented a paper
at the National Association of
School Psychologists 2007 Annual
Convention, speaking on assessment
relationships in preschool populations. Her
presentation examined the relationship or
correlations of several assessment measures used
with preschoolers in determining early entrance
into kindergarten. The measures she discussed
best predict early entrance to kindergarten and
academic exceptionality.
Office of Psychological Services program director
Cliff Hatt (pictured above, right) also spoke at
the National Association of School Psychologists
Convention. His presentation dealt with an
examination of the number of factors or specific
abilities that are measured by the Wechsler
Intelligence Scale for Children, fourth edition
(WISC-IV) as well as by another test, the
Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scale (RIAS).
The research generated has implications for
psychologists in terms of how they interpret
results on these two tests. Hatt also presented at
the National Center for Culturally Responsive
Educational Systems’ (NCRESt) Second National
Forum on Disproportionality “Leadership for
Equity and Excellence: Transforming Education”
in Washington, D.C. in February. He copresented with Dr. Jon Thompson (pictured
above, left), a former VBCPS psychologist,
on how to use significance testing to assess for
disproportionate representation and to monitor
policy changes. Well done!

McLauchlin was invited
to Oxford University
to participate in the
prestigious Oxford
University RoundTable
Symposium on Diversity.
McLauchlin presented
a paper on her dissertation
research focusing on the importance of incorporating diversity in the school curriculum in
closing achievement gaps. The symposium was
held March 25-30 at Lincoln College, Oxford
University in Oxford, England. McLauchlin’s
paper, "Diversity: The Windows of Opportunity
in Overcoming the Academic Achievement Gap
Between African-American and White Students
and in Overcoming Racially Discriminatory
Myths of African-American Students in Public
Education," is currently under peer review for
publication in the Oxford Public Policy Forum.
Congratulations to Tallwood High School
gifted resource teacher Lisa Walker on having
been selected to participate in a prestigious
program, Teachers to Teachers, under the
auspices of American Councils for
International Education. The program
calls for Walker to travel to Russia in March
2008 where she will teach for three weeks.
She is also working with a Russian teacher
on a joint language project for her trip to
Russia next year. Walker is one of only four
teachers in the U.S. to be chosen for the program
and recently returned from a US-Russia conference held at Purdue University where program
participants, U.S. and international, are being
trained. American Councils for International
Education (ACTR/ACCELS) is an international
non-profit organization working to advance
education, research, and mutual understanding
across the United States, Canada and the nations
of Southeastern Europe, Eurasia, and South Asia.

Thanks for Stashing Your Trash!
The school division’s recycling program during
the 2006-2007 school year was a “trashing
success!” Since September 2006, 859 tons of
recycled materials have been collected in the blue
recycling cans that can be found in every classroom and office area. Students and staff should
be proud of this accomplishment. Virginia Beach
City Public Schools is really making a difference
when it comes to the environment. Here are some
interesting paper recycling facts that will motivate
you to continue to use those blue cans!

Students, Staff, and Parents =
Academic Block Party
Seatack Elementary School held its Second
Academic Block Party on Saturday, May 19,
on the school’s grounds. The party’s purpose
was to extend learning beyond the school walls
by embarking on a collaborative endeavor with
Seatack’s partners in education, with members
of the community, students, staff, and parents.
In addition, the Academic Block Party was used
as a venue to spotlight and promote several
successful programs incorporating technology
such as Fast Math, Read 180, EM Games, and
Read About. The event was a rousing success and
attendees enjoyed the academic games, prizes,
dancing, and refreshments. Those who needed
transportation were able to take advantage of the
shuttle bus services that were provided to families.
The event was coordinated by SCA coordinator
and third-grade teacher Recharta Walston.

Virginia Beach Educators Contribute
to Writing Project
The following veteran teachers and administrator
have all contributed articles to a new book about
teaching writing called Lesson Plans for Teaching
Writing. The book is published by the National
Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and
edited by a former VBCPS English teacher
Chris Jennings Dixon.
They’re in print!
The book grew out of a writing initiative between
Salem High School and Tidewater Community
College that began in 1998 and extended through
2005. During that time, high school teachers in
conjunction with college teachers participated
in a Writing Coalition. They came together from
several school divisions and colleges around the
country, participating in numerous workshops
in order to explore new ways to teach writing.
Out of their work came Lesson Plans for
Teaching Writing.

This point is stressed in the introduction which

Out & About
Congratulations to Independence Middle School Teacher of the Month
for March Kathleen Spears, who teaches seventh-grade science. Comments
made by students that led to this award include: Always comes through for
her students; able to make any student smile at anytime; makes her lessons
fun and always adds a "twist" to everything; keeps everything positive;
shows her students what it takes to be a team player as she not only
teaches her students, but coaches and sponsors students from all

It’s a three-peat! Centerville Elementary's faculty volleyball team won the district championship
for the third year in a row by defeating Ocean Lakes and Birdneck in the end of season playoffs.

In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week,
Three Oaks Elementary PTA president Dawn

Miller awarded memberships in the Virginia Beach
Public Schools Education Association to all teachers
in the school. Three Oaks’ PTA provided the

They’re All Winners!
Corporate Landing Elementary announced that physical education teacher
Gloria Allen has won the WalMart 2007 Teacher of the Year award. In
recognition of her honor, the school received a $1,000 gift to be used for
student and instructional supplies and Allen received a certificate, a special
WalMart/Sam’s Club Teacher of the Year polo shirt, and a $100 gift card.
Members of the community as well as school personnel nominated Allen
for the honor. She was credited for her “endless commitment to the
education of children.”

Congratulations also to Brandon Middle
School teacher Karen Toliver on being
named Teacher of the Year by WALMART
as well. Toliver was honored during a faculty
meeting and received prizes and a $100 gift
card. In addition, Brandon Middle School
received $1,000 on her behalf.
At a recent Rosemont Forest Elementary faculty meeting, Beverly
Wooddell, fifth-grade teacher, was honored as the Virginia Beach Sam's
Club Teacher of the Year. One of Wooddell's fifth-grade students nominated
her at the Sam's Club on Virginia Beach Boulevard. In addition to receiving
the title Local Teacher of the Year of Sam's Club, Mrs. Wooddell received
a $1,000 grant to be used for her grade level, a $100 Sam's Club gift card
to use on classroom supplies, and a polo shirt and a certificate.
Imagination, a competitive program in which
students learn to develop solutions to creative
problem solving challenges. Teams compete
locally, regionally, and nationally. Rychlik was
also named Reading Teacher of the Year in
2004, Teacher of the Year of ODC in 2007,
Tagged by the Superintendent in 2002
and 2004, and named to Who’s Who
Among America’s Teachers in 2005-06.
Foreign Languages Celebrations!
It’s “si” for Princess Anne High School’s Rachel Grubb, the newly named
“rookie” teacher of the year for foreign languages. A Princess Anne High
School Spanish III, Spanish V, and Public Speaking II and III teacher,
Grubb has held that position for the two years she has
been teaching. Her philosophy of teaching is that
“active, engaged learning results in active, engaged
students,” and she works assiduously to ensure
that her students leave her classes not only with
knowledge of Spanish, but also with a greater
perspective of the world in which they live. In
her brief tenure at PAHS, Grubb has become an
integral part of the high school community. Her
enthusiasm is contagious, and as forensics coach
at PA led her students to first place at VHSL State
competition. Grubb earned a Bachelor of Arts
degree from St. Louis University in Madrid, Spain,
where she was valedictorian of her class and majored in
Spanish philology and minored in English literature.
And it’s “ya” for Tallwood High School German
teacher John Mueller, who was recently selected
Citywide Foreign Languages Teacher of the Year
for 2007. A career teacher since 1988, Mueller
is a 29-year veteran teacher, with 24 of those
years spent with VBCPS. Mueller has served
at Tallwood High School for 15 years and
teaches German I and IV as well as Level IV
of AP German. He also has been the department
chair at Tallwood since 1992. Prior to that he was
Department Chair at Brandon Junior for two years.
Mueller has been described as a “master” teacher by his
colleagues, and certainly his students would bear that out. Twenty-one
of his students have been accepted to the Governor’s German Academy
since 1994 and many have earned state and national recognition as well
as study trips abroad. Mueller is no stranger to awards. In 2000 he was
named a recipient of the DUDEN Award for Excellence in teaching by
the American Association of Teachers of German (2000). He was also
named a Distinguished Educator at Tallwood High in 2002, and was
Tagged by the Superintendent in 2005. Mueller earned his undergraduate
degree in Italian from the State University of New York at Buffalo, with
minors in German and French. He also studied at the University of Siena
in Italy. His master’s degree is in Education and Childhood Development
and was earned at The George Washington University.

Lynne Rychlik, third-grade teacher at Old Donation Center, was recently
named Citywide Gifted Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008. She has served
at ODC since 1998 when the school attained its present fulltime gifted
elementary school status. Rychlik is often tapped to lead professional
development programs on curriculum and literacy topics at building and
citywide in-services. In addition she works tirelessly with Destination

Congratulations to Maynard (Mardy) Massey on Being Selected
Virginia’s Administrator of the Year
Assistant Superintendent for Middle Schools Mardy Massey was recently named the state Administrator of the Year
by the Virginia Association of Educational Office Professionals (VAEOP). His nomination for the award cites his “tireless
efforts to do what is best for students” as well as his propensity to “work behind the scenes” to get the job done. Moreover,
Massey is lauded for his assistance to and belief in the skills of his clerical staff and his willingness to promote professionalism and enthusiasm in the office. “I am very honored to have been selected for this prestigious award, said Massey.
“Working in this office can be very demanding in that much of what we do is tied to the needs of 15 middle schools.
Without the assistance and diligent work of our office associates, it would be very difficult to respond to so many requests
from so many people both in and out of this school division. We have developed protocols here that allow us to work
in concert on very demanding initiatives while at the same time being able to respond to the many emergencies and
deadline driven projects that come our way. I am so humbled in receiving this award, especially when there are so many, many talented and highly qualified
administrators throughout our Commonwealth.”
As the Assistant Superintendent for Middle Schools, Massey is responsible for overseeing and supporting the division’s 15 middle schools. Massey is a 33-year
veteran educator who began his career in Virginia Beach Schools as a mathematics teacher at Independence Junior High School. Following this, he assumed
duties as a student activities coordinator at Independence Junior, then Green Run High. Subsequently, he was named an assistant principal at Great Neck Junior,
Bayside High, and Tallwood High. Prior to assuming his present duties, Massey served as principal of Brandon Middle School. He earned his bachelor’s and
master’s degrees from Old Dominion University and his Doctor of Education from The George Washington University. Massey is now eligible for the national
Administrator of the Year award.
Ocean Lakes High School Nurse Kathleen Maurer Named City-Wide Nurse of the Year
Congratulations to Kathleen (Kathy) Maurer, RN BSN, the school nurse at Ocean Lakes High School, on being selected the citywide School Nurse of
the Year by the Virginia Beach School Nurses Association. Maurer was cited for her excellence in school nursing and for always sharing her experience and
knowledge. A 14-year veteran with Virginia Beach schools, Maurer is dedicated to providing an outstanding health services program to students and works
diligently on numerous projects for Ocean Lakes and the school division at large. For example, she has sponsored the Medical Club at Ocean Lakes for eight
years, and began the Diabetic Support group for Teens with Diabetes at Ocean Lakes. For 12 years she has taught CPR and First Aid for the division. Among
the other classes she teaches are first aid training for bus drivers; smoking cessation; QPR (suicide prevention) training for students as well as for teachers
(through PDP), the police department, and the EMT (emergency medical technician) program
at TCC; classes about cutting and self-mutilation; and classes on aids in Africa for a comparative
government distance learning course. She is also extremely active in the Virginia Beach School Nurses
Association, serving as the publicity chairperson. Maurer works at the food pantry at Holy Family
Catholic Church each month and in 1997-1999, she started a school health program in Johannesburg,
South Africa, based on the Virginia Beach schools’ model. Maurer received her RN from Maryview
Hospital School of Nursing in Portsmouth and her BSN from Marymount University in Arlington
as well as her EMT from Tidewater Community College.

Middle School Principal Honored for Volunteerism
Congratulations to Brandon Middle School principal Catherine Rogers who was recently honored by being selected to receive the President’s Volunteer Service
Award. Rogers was recognized for generously donating more than 4,000 hours of her free time to her school and community. In his 2002 State of the Union
address, President George W. Bush announced the creation of the USA Freedom Corps and challenged all Americans to dedicate two years or 4,000 hours to
serving and improving their neighborhoods. In recognition of her commitment and volunteerism, Rogers received a personalized certificate. To learn more

Landstown High School Dedication
Landstown High officially celebrated the opening of the school’s new
24-room addition during a special ceremony on May 2. Each of the
new classrooms comes fully equipped with state-of-the-art instructional
technology such as a central projection system mounted on the ceilings
with large screens to project images. This $6.6 million, two-year
construction project also included an amphitheatre in the new courtyard
that will be used for a variety of outdoor activities.

Thanks to a UNITED effort, VBCPS goes over the
half-million mark in the 2006 United Way campaign!
In an amazing demonstration of the power of giving, Virginia Beach schools students and staff for the first time broke the $500,000 mark in this year’s annual
United Way campaign. With pledges and contributions totaling $518,981, the division has achieved a 4.56 percent increase over last year’s total of $496,316.
The Virginia Beach school community is incredibly generous to those in need. Once again, our campaign totals speak to staff and students’ spirit of giving.
Thank you to Virginia Beach City Public Schools for a remarkable 2006 United Way campaign. It is with great pride that we recognize these outstanding

Student Recognition: Student Keel Club
In 1991 the Student Keel Club was created to recognize our
students for their generous levels of giving. Keel Club levels
range from $500 to $9,999. The first time students reach a
Keel Club level of $500 or higher, their school receives a Student Keel Club Achiever’s Award plaque with an engraved brass
plate. Should students reach Keel Club levels in subsequent
years, the school is awarded additional brass plates that signify
their achievements to attach to the previously awarded plaque.

2006 United Way Campaign School Coordinators
Campaign coordinators kicked off the 2006 United Way Campaign in September at a special
Appreciation Breakfast held at the Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center.
Thanks to these dedicated individuals the campaign went smoothly and the school division

Elizabeth Rodriguez, a third-grade teacher
at Corporate Landing Elementary has been
named to Cambridge Who's Who Registry
of Executives and Professionals in Education,
2007-2008.
School and Office
Recognitions
Virginia Beach City Public Schools has been
awarded a Meritorious Budget Award for excellence in the preparation and issuance of its
2006-07 annual budget. The award was granted
by the Association of School Business Officials
(ASBO) International which is a professional
organization that provides programs and serves
to promote high standards of school business
management practices, professional growth, and
effective use of educational resources. In granting the award, the ASBO Review Team cited
the budget’s “excellent spreadsheets, charts, and
graphs,” as well as its readability in that the document can be understood by the “lay person as
well as the detail-oriented expert.” Well done!
Congratulations to the Department of Technology for having Virginia Beach schools staff
members win four of the five technology leadership awards offered at the Annual Consortium
for Interactive Instruction Conference:
• Sarah Sykes, a fifth-grade teacher at Landstown Elementary School. She
received the Elementary School Technology
Classroom Teacher of the Year award.
• Marie Booz, the computer resource
specialist at Landstown Elementary
School. She received the Elementary
School Technology Educator of the
Year award.
• Jennifer Grabiec, the computer resource
specialist at Birdneck Elementary School.
She also received the Elementary School
Technology Educator of the Year award.

Janene Gorham, instructional technology coordinator in the Office of
Instructional Technology. She received the
Technology Supervisor of the Year Award.
Kudos to the Adult Learning Center on receiving the 2007 Ladies Choice Award from
Tidewater Women Magazine for having computer
classes the magazine’s readers cited as being their
“favorite.” An announcement of the ALC’s honor
can be found in Tidewater Women’s May issue.
Congratulations to First Colonial High School
virtual enterprise instructor Sara Lockett and
her students who created Sac-Shack, a virtual
business selling furniture that is “high-quality, durable, and innovative - but doesn't
compromise the old-fashioned feel of home.”
Comprising 13 students, the business placed
third in the National Business Plan Competition
held in New York City in March and the team
also received a salesmanship award at the
competition’s trade fair. Another student
from First Colonial was on the team that placed
second in the Global Business Challenge.
Congratulations to Old Donation Center's
Destination ImagiNation (DI) team which
advanced to the Global Competition in
Knoxville, Tennessee, in May. ODC is the
only elementary school in the Tidewater
region and one of a select few in the entire
state of Virginia whose students competed
against students from across the U.S. and more
than 10 other countries and provinces. ODC
third-grade teacher and Citywide Gifted Teacher
of the Year Lynne Rychlik is the DI sponsor.
On May 4, Arrowhead Elementary welcomed
representatives from North County Down,
Northern Ireland. Arrowhead fifth-graders
are pen pals with two schools from Bangor,
a sister-city of Virginia Beach. The school has
enjoyed a partnership with Bangor for seven
years. Visitors included Bangor’s mayor and
several city officials, who toured the school and
visited with fifth-grade classes. Students honored
their visitors with special greetings and an
assembly featuring songs, poems and an Irish
Dance. The Bangor representatives also toured
the school and visited with the fifth-grade classes.
Congratulations to Brandon Middle School
chorus members and chorus director Michele
Powell. On Saturday, May 12, the chorus
performed in the Choral Festival at Paramount
Kings Dominion and received a “Superior,
Number One” rating from all three judges.
Congratulations to Landstown High School
and Technology Academy CAD instructor
Eric Nestor on having his students for the
second year in a row win first, second, and
third place in the CAD (Computer Aided
Design) category of the 2007 Tidewater Builder's
Association Young Designers' Scholarship
Competition! Academy students also earned
a second place award for entering so many
projects into the competition, 16 in all. The
$1,000 award will be used to fund projects
in the Academy’s drafting/design department.
All winning entries will be on display at
Homearama in October 2007.
Congratulations to Cox High School special
education teacher Brian Malsch and his “crew”
of the school’s Falcon’s Nest coffee kiosk on
being named the 2007 Business Member of
the Year for Sam’s Club. Well done!
Congratulations to all of Virginia Beach City
Public Schools’ coaches and team members
at all comprehensive high schools – Bayside,
Cox, First Colonial, Green Run, Kellam,
Kempsville, Landstown, Ocean Lakes,
Princess Anne, Salem, Tallwood. For the
very first time in the history of the school
division, every high school in the district has
won the Beach District Sportsmanship and
Achievement Award presented by the Virginia
High School League. The award honors schools
for their high levels of sportsmanship.
Individual Awards
and Recognitions
Congratulations to Landstown High School
work and family studies teachers Kay Gramling
and Suzette Johnson and special education
teachers Rob Lanz and Gina Wood along with
special education teacher assistants Johnna
Levins and Diane Hruska on winning the
Regional 2007 Creating Excellence Award for
Career and Technical Education. Their project,
Beach SANDwiches & More, is a food kiosk
located at the Central Administration Building
which offers lunch items to staff every “A” day.
Students operate the kiosk and learn important
job skills they will be able to use when they
transition from high school to the job market.
The award is made annually to recognize
exemplary projects that promote excellence
in career and technical education.
Congratulations to Office of Organizational
Development specialist Stephanie Enzmann
on being appointed an examiner for the 2007
Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. As
an examiner, Enzmann will be responsible for
reviewing and evaluating applications submitted
for the award. The board comprises approximately 500 experts selected from industry,
professional and trade organizations, education
and health care organizations and government.
All members of the board must participate in a
preparation course based on the Baldrige Criteria
for Performance Excellence and the scoring and
evaluation processes for the Baldrige Award.
Kingston Elementary principal Nancy Davenport
was recently selected President-elect of the
National Association of Elementary School
Principals. The election followed the association's
annual conference at Seattle, Washington.
Davenport will serve as President-elect for 20072008 and then will fulfill the duties of President
of the National Association of Elementary School
Principals for the 2008-2009 school year.
Congratulations to Green Run Elementary
School first-grade teacher Tracey Calder who
was awarded the title of “Staff Member of the
Quarter” by the Green Run Homes Association.
Congratulations to Elizabeth Gibbs, a special
education teacher at Green Run Elementary
on being named staff member of the month
by the PTA for the month of March.
Three teachers at New Castle Elementary
School – reading resource teacher Keitha
Havey, fourth-grade teacher Kathryn Rountree
Scott, and fourth-grade teacher Debbie Field
– all received $1000 grants from the Virginia
Department of Education to use for pursuing
their National Board Certification.
Congratulations to Kevin Johnson, computer
resource specialist at Cooke Elementary School,
and Katie Knapp, computer resource specialist at
Windsor Oaks Elementary School. Both have
been selected for the Discovery Educator Network
Leadership Council (DEN LC). The DEN LC will
play a critical role in maintaining the state-level
DEN community through consistent and varied
communications as well as organization and support
of local activities and events. Johnson and Knapp
will attend a Discovery Education Summer Institute,
Johnson at the Discovery headquarters in Silver
Spring, MD, and Knapp on a Carnival Cruise Lines
Bahamas cruise. Interested educators are encouraged

Green Run Elementary special education teacher
Gayle Montgomery has been honored by the
PTA as Educator of the Year. Congratulations!
Bayside Middle School’s band won a rating
of Excellent by a panel of nationally recognized
judges at the Dixie Classics Music Festival. The
competition was held at Green Run High School
in May. Congratulations to band students and
band director David Snead.
Congratulations to Bayside Elementary School’s
teacher assistant of the year, Lydia Tomko,
who serves as a kindergarten assistant.
Ocean Lakes High School American sign
language teacher Lynn Steinberg passed the written test to earn National American Sign Language
Teachers Association Qualified level certification.
Congratulations to Princess Anne High School
AP and International Baccalaureate Latin teacher
Kathleen Earles and Latin teacher James
Wilkes, who teaches Latin I through V. Together,
Earles’ and Wilkes’ Latin students have earned
more than 361 Latin awards this year on national
and state exams and essay contests as well as
at events such as Latin Day at Virginia Wesleyan
College and the Virginia Junior Classical League
Convention. An incredible accomplishment!
