CELEBRATING OUR TALENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
What to find in this edition
A Few Words from the Editors
Hello! We are the editors: Álvaro T.,
Ana, Marta, Michi and Paloma!
We can’t believe that we’ve made
it to the fifth edition of the magnificent
St. Anne’s World.
We have written about fencing and
music classes and we’ll find out a little bit
more about the mysterious Mr. Anatoli!!
In this edition we have included Art
pages, Problem Solving and Alternatives
to Football in the playground. We would like to thank all the pupils and teachers who
have contributed very effectively in writing this edition of the newspaper. A big
thank you to the sub-editors of Year 5 who have helped us to organise our school
newspaper. We do hope that you enjoy it.
St. Anne’s School founded in 1969
St. Anne’s was founded by Miss Margaret Jean Raines in 1969 who followed
her dream of having her own school and sharing the
British culture with children in Spain.
Since then our school has gone from strength
to strength and now has great prestige throughout
the whole world! Our past pupils are now professional people working worldwide and Miss Raines is
so proud of each and every one of them!
The drone
To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the school we
made forty-five in numerals and a drone flew over us to film the event and to take
photos. It was a
fun experience
even if it was a bit
cold!!
Drone is the
name given to a
flying robot which
is usually remotely
controlled (it also
is a male honeybee).

Year 5 ran a marathon of 20 minutes to collect
money for poor children . We got a little bit tired
running . Each of us had sponsors and our sponsors for each minute paid us money . Everyone
had a lot of fun running the marathon and were
proud of ourselves . After we had run 20 minutes everybody crowned themselves or another
person with a crown that Ancient Greeks had for
the Olympic games . Everyone enjoyed running
the marathon. We raised 4119€ for the charity
Wateraid.
The crowning moment!

are lost needlessly because of a lack of safe

In the month of November, Y6 did a
sponsored swim to raise money for a
charity in Tanzania. The foundation is
called Shika. Everyone was very excited. Unfortunately some people
couldn’t swim so they did a sponsored silence; this consisted of keeping
silent for an hour. Everyone swam
really quickly and had a great time
the maximum lengths were 43, it was
Hugo who did it. The whole class
thought they had done well and were
very proud of themselves. The maximum lengths that the girls swam
were 34 and lots of them achieved it.
Everyone swam like fishes and had a
great time, even though they got very tired. In the
next two weeks people brought the money in, some
very generous people raised more than 400 €.
Each day we brought more money in and had a bigger amount to add to the total. Everyone contributed what they could and finally we raised an

Fencing Club
Fencing is the martial art of fighting with blades. Today
it is an Olympic sport but the ancestor of modern fencing originated in Spain, where several books on fencing
were written. Treatise on Arms was written by Diego de
Valera between 1458 and 1471 and is one of the oldest
surviving manuals on western fencing.
Our fencing teacher was an Olympic champion!
I interviewed some members of the fencing club.
Do you have fun in the fencing club?
Yes because you are with friends and you play fun competitions. (Rodolfo Year 5 blue)
What do you do?
We practice attacks and defences and play some games
where we learn things (Lucas Year 6)
Can you name the moves?
Yes, they are the thrust which is an attack and the 5th,
4th, and 8thdefence and many more… (Alvaro T. Year 6)
Is it safe?
Yes, because you have a protective vest
under the fencing jacket, a special glove
and a helmet. (Rodrigo Year 5 blue)
How do you win?
You win by touching the people with your
weapon from the waist up. (Federico Year 5
Blue)
When did Fencing become an Olympic sport?
Fencing was part of the first Olympic Games in
the summer of 1896. (Grischko our Fencing
teacher)
Why did you join the Fencing Club?
We started because we thought it would be fun and
interesting and it is!!! (All students)

popular instrument in our school.
At the end of the year all of the music students put on
a performance for the parents so that they can see
how much they have learnt!

2014-2015 CAPTAINS AND VICE-CAPTAINS
We always celebrate elections on the 1st of Ocotber
to elect Captains and Vice-Captains of the Primary
School. The process starts with a poster campaign.
On election day each candidate had to give a speech
explaining their ideas for improving things in school.
The children were allowed to question the candidates. Next everyone was given a paper to write the
name of their favourite candidate. In Edinburgh the
votes were very close, but finally Cristina was
chosen as Captain and Inés as Vice-Captain. In Cambridge Jaime got the place of Captain and Eugenia as
Vice-Captain. The Durham results were Matilde House Captain and Fernando Vice-Captain. Finally the
result for Oxford was Álvaro R. Captain and Candela
as Vice-Captain. All the candidates had an awesome
time, even those who were not elected!

Yoga
Maths
P.S.H.E.
The Reception classes have yoga
lessons .They are having a great
time. They do something called
“Yoga adventures to different
places”. The children are asked to
breathe and imagine adventures
to different places. Also they use
their body to make animal
postures.
The Reception classes are
learning numbers in English.
They have a new number
every week. They learn a
number at a time. They identify numbers and they count
objects. This is a useful way to
learn, because they are only
small. Also they order the
numbers like 1-2-3-4 etc...
Reception have lessons on Personal, Social and Health Education - P.S.H.E . The class is
about being nice to each other.
They read stories like the Mr
Men books. An interesting thing
is that they talk about school
rules and how to behave in the
school .
Physical Education
English
We interviewed Miss Charlotte,
the yoga teacher and she made
some very interesting comments.
What do you do in yoga classes
with Reception ?
We do lots of things. One of the
things we do is imagine that we
go to different places and that is
called “Yoga adventures”. Also,
we use our bodies to make
Animal postures.
What inspired you to do yoga
classes with Reception?
The children used to do yoga in
nursery and we saw it was good
for them and that it helped them
to focus and to be calm.
In English Reception are learning the sounds that the letters
make. They use magnetic
boards to pronounce the letters and to identify sounds.
They use fingers to blend
sound and to make sounds.
They are learning a lot .
Miss Charlotte, do you do
yoga classes? why? Yes I do,
because it helps me to relax
and I learn new postures that I
can then teach to the children.
By: Cristina and Jaime
This term Reception are doing
obstacle courses with Mr. Steven. They have to be able to
balance , be quick and need to
pass through hoops!!
They have lots of fun doing it !!!
Chess
Once a week Miss Magali gives
a chess lesson to Reception.
She talks about chess and
shows videos about the figures
of the chess pieces. They do
this lesson after lunch on
Tuesday or on Thursdays.

very nicely in St. Anne’s. They
love their new school, they
have made friends very easily.

We learnt about an artist called Wassily Kandinsky. His paintings
are amazing! His paintings have different colours and shapes. He
used lots of circles and squares. By Atalanta, Valentina and Blanca
Year 2 went to the Thyssen Museum. They saw lots of wonderful
and great paintings. They said that therir favourite painting was a
painting called “Pintura con Manchas”
Alexia said that if she were to paint a painting from the museum
she would paint a beautiful painting that had the colours of fire.
She couldn´t remember the name but she described it perfectly.
The museum wasn´t as they had imagined it would be but they
enjoyed it a lot!

In the first term Year 2
studied the human
body. One of the
things they investigated was how bacteria
and viruses affect the
human body and how
the human body
responds to them.
We did an experiment
about bacteria and
viruses. Bacteria and
viruses can make us ill if they get into our bodies. We mixed some
green paint with water. Then we put the coloured water on our paintbrushes and we pretended to sneeze beside it. The coloured water
made the shape of a sneeze on the paper. A sneeze makes bacteria
and viruses travel a long way! To keep healthy we should try and
sneeze into a tissue and wash our hands after sneezing. Then we
watched a video about bacteria and viruses in the body. We were
happy when the white blood cells won the fight with bacteria and
viruses. We learned a lot!
By Miguel A., Borja, Amanda and Jacobo
We have been looking at vehicles in Design and Technology, as well as vehicles from the past in History. Rodrigo,
Gonzalo Borja and Gonzalo R. gave us a wonderful presentation on their family’s old cars. The boys pointed to all the
materials used to make a car like metal, rubber, glass and
wood. They also explained that the cars need a wheel and
axle to be able to move. We also watched videos of old
boats, aeroplanes and farm machinery.
The majority of the class said that their favourite type of
vehicles were the sail boats because they used steam power.Everybody told us that the topic was really enjoyable and said that if they could drive a vehicle from the past it would be a sail boat. They would quite like to live in the past because there
are lots of different vehicles and objects. The main differences between old and modern vehicles
are the colours, size and engines.

A GLIMPSE INSIDE ... YEAR 3
On Friday 18th of November Year 3 made some lovely fridge magnets with their photos on them.
They made them because they were studying friction. So they
decided to make some friction magnets. They made them by
sticking a photograph of five cm to a circular mini magnet.
We learnt that magnets have two poles: north and south. Did
you know that magnets
attract some metals,
such as iron and nickel,
but they do not attract
metal such as copper or
gold?
Traditional Fairy Tale Writing
Moving Monsters
In January Year 3 made
some magnificent moving
monsters! They made them with some syringes
and plastic tubes that made the monsters move
using air pressure– this is called pneumatics.
On the 27th of October Year 3 wrote some traditional fairy tales in their class. Lucía and Lola
C. wrote The Princess and the Frog, Luis B.
wrote The Fighting Frog , Carmina wrote Ice
Princess, Lola P. chose to write The Mystery of
the Diamonds and Alvaro wrote The Gold Ship.
They all wrote them because they had been
studying fairy tales and to finalise it they chose
to write their favourite fairy tale. Luis B. told
me that to write them first they had to imagine
themselves as the author writing their very
first book.. Finally when they finished they
decorated the borders with different colours.
They were all lovely, they copied them out with
their best handwriting.

Year 3 went on an exciting trip to the museum
Reina Sofia to see Picasso paintings. They went
there because they were studying the amazing
Picasso. They went in the Autumn term in October. They saw lots of Pablo Picasso’s paintings.
Year 3 loved the magnificent trip to the Reina
Sofia. The paintings were very interesting and
beautiful for Year 3. They said that it was the
best trip of the Autumn term.

improved their making skills. They used a variety of materials and equipment to make the instruments such as: scissors; glue; balloons and things they could find at home.
Some of the best ones were really cool and made a very
interesting sound. Some were slow, others were noisy and
some were normal. It took two days to make the fantastic
instruments. Some of the instruments were outstanding
for example Olalla’s and Pablo’s which you can see below.

They made these paintings to improve their drawing skills
with water colours. They did it by getting the paint brush
dripping it in water getting the colour and drawing the
pictures of nature. They made water colours of trees,
bushes and plants. They sat with partners and agreed on

Greek mythical monsters out of plasticine. They did this
activity because in History they are studying Ancient Greeks
and in English they have been reading
different Greek Myths like Theseus and
the Minotaur.
Firstly they drew and labelled their
imagined mythical beast. Then using
different coloured plasticine and tools
they made their mythical beasts which
you can see to the right.

Spaghetti and Marshmallow Towers
In the Autumn term on the first week back to school after the summer holidays
Year 5 Blue had a competition of who could make the tallest spaghetti and
marshmallow tower! They did this for fun and for team building skills. They put
the spaghetti on to the marshmallow and they continued like that joining all the
pieces until they built a spaghetti and marshmallow tower. It was lots of fun!

We went to the Sorolla Musem and we saw lots of
interesting things. Some of us said that the museum was
creative, amazing, gigantic and beautiful. Everyone liked Joaquin
Sorolla´s drawings and style because he used lots of light and
shadows. Victoria said that if she were Joaquin Sorolla she
would draw a self portrait on the beach. Some of us said that if
they could meet the
artist we would ask him
how he learned to draw

Literacy
Art
Geography
In Literacy we have been doing a topic
about spy stories. We created our own
hero and villain and then, we wrote
stories about them. We read plays and
stories like “Agent X”.
We also watched “Gold
Finger” which is a typical spy story. Everyone
loved the film and the
topic was very interesting to write and learn
about. By Ana
In Art we have been working
on still life (insects, leaves,
people and mushrooms). We
had to observe the objects
very carefully. As well, we
have learned about William
Morris and his designs. He
was an important person
from Victorian Britain that
created patterns for fabric.
To get ideas we first looked
at and printed photos from
the internet.
By Lucas
In Geography we’ve been studying
mountains. Mountains are areas of
high land. Usually high land is called
a mountain when it is higher than
300m, but when it’s less it’s called a
hill. There are three types of mountains: volcanic, fold and block. Most
mountains are found in long chains
called mountain ranges. By Jesus
Music
In Music we have been singing rounds,
this consists in having four different
groups of children, who have a part to
sing and all sing it at the same time. In
some we even played instruments! We
practiced many
songs like Relay
race, Junkanoo
and Nanuma.
We performed
them in front of
all primary. We
had such a great
time in music classes!

Computing
In the first term we studied E-safety, it
is all about being safe online. It is a brilliant topic to learn about because you
will always be sure of using the internet correctly. We created some fun and
interesting leaflets all about this topic!

History
This term, in History, we
have been learning about
the Victorians. Poor children
and rich children had very
different lives. The poor
worked in the mines, factories, chimney sweeping
(boys) or like a governess
(girls).
However the rich went to
school, had “modern” luxuries and enjoyed going on
holiday. We saw amazing
videos about competitions
of the Victorians and we
read a book with a lot of
interesting facts. By Claudia

VICTORIAN DAY IN YEAR 6
17
Waste not, Want not!
On Friday 21st November Y6 had a Victorian
day. This happened because like every year ,
Year 6 had gruel at lunch time and said it was disgusting!!
they studied The Victorians. All of the pupils ,
Miss Caroline and some more teachers were
dressed up in Victorian costumes. Their names
and surnames were changed to Victorian names.
They wrote with ink pens and used chalk boards.
Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness!
Girls and boys were separated in class and Do you think other teachers got into role?
in the dining room and had different lesYes definitely , especially Miss Rebecca and Miss Julianne who came
sons. Girls learnt knitting with Miss
and helped us with the girls. (Miss Caroline)
Julianne , while boys learnt how steam engines worked and about the British Empire
with Mr Mc Shane and both girls and boys
did music with Miss Rebecca where they
prayed and sang. In the patio they played
hopscotch and skipping ropes...etc . In the
last patio they ate hot chestnuts and played
a game with conkers
It was a great day for Y6!
Do you think Y6 have enjoyed Victorian day?
Yes, I think so because of the great participation.
What did you think of the children’s food?
I enjoyed making them eat the food!! (Miss Caroline)
Only one child liked the gruel, and he was… Alvaro. T.
He ate everything and then repeated!

We all liked the roasted chestnuts
for afternoon snack and we certainly
didn’t mind repeating them!!!!

Christmas Service
21
On Wednesday the 19th of December all of the classes of St.
Anne’s School went to the church
to participate in the Christmas Service. Lots of parents came too. It
was a wonderful day!
The Bachillerato pupils acted out
the nativity scene and they were
really good! Nursery were the little
angels, Reception Blue were the
Drummers, Reception Red were
the Kings’ Pages and Year 1 were
the little shepherds. All of the
other classes were dressed elegantly in their school uniform.
Some parents, who were former
pupils of the School, shared a bible
reading with their children. It was
lovely!
At the end we all sang “Kings Came
Riding” and the parents liked that.
We all thought that it was a magnificent and special day.

Sugar Cube Trick
Effect:
The magician asks for a volunteer from
the audience.
The volunteer picks a number between 1 and 10.
The magician writes the number on a sugar cube.
The magician drops the cube into a cup of water and holds
the volunteer's hand over the water.
He/she turns the volunteer's hand over and Poof! the number is on the volunteer's hand.
Supplies:
• a pencil (must be a pencil, pen will NOT work)
• a sugar cube (you can have several for effect)
• a glass of water
Secret:
Have the volunteer pick a number.
Write it onto the sugar cube with a pencil
(press hard).
Then, hold the cube between your thumb and
one finger.
Hold it so the number transfers onto your thumb and
say," Now I will put this cube into the cup".
Press the cube as hard as possible so the number is on
your thumb.
Put the cube into the water and hold the volunteer's
hand above the water, make sure your thumb is in their
palm so the number from your finger transfers onto the
volunteer's hand.
This is a good trick to show small children because they
are less likely to figure out the trick.
Pepper Trick
The Magnetic Pencil
Supplies Needed: 2 Pencils and a wristwatch
Set up: Put a wristwatch on. Place one end of the other
pencil parallel to your wrist into the wristwatch band.
Make sure the pencil extends to the middle of your
palm.
You will be using the ‘Wrist Hand’ to slip the magnetic
pencil under the other pencil to hold it in snuggly under
your ‘Flat Hand’. The pencil under the watch keeps the
magnetic pencil under your hand in place
Instructions:
Step 1: With the pencil set up under the wristwatch.
Grab your wrist of the ‘Flat Hand’ with the palm down.
Bring the hand down over the pencil.
Step 2: While your ‘Flat Hand’ is over the magnetic pencil, secretly shove the magnetic pencil under the pencil
in your wrist watch with the ‘Wrist Grabbing Hand’.
Step 3: Slowly lift your hand with the pencil seemingly
stuck to it and your ‘Wrist Grabbing Hand’ wrapped
around your wrist. Make sure to have your palm flat
down and they can’t see the wrist watch pencil. The
pencil appears to be stuck to your hand.
Step 4: Now suddenly let go of your wrist being held by
your ‘Wrist Grabbing Hand’ to reveal the illusion that
the pencil is magically stuck to the palm of your hand.
Step 5: As you bring your hand and magnetic pencil
down onto the table, grab your wrist with your ‘Wrist
Grabbing Hand’ and quickly and smoothly slip the wrist
watch pencil from under the wrist watch with that hand.
This releases the magnetic pencil.
Step 6: Take your other hand (‘Wrist Grabbing Hand’)
away as you display and bring attention to the magnetic
pencil now on the table. Now the pencil is on the table,
so you can show the palm of your hand revealing nothing can be holding the pencil.
Step 7: Get rid of the other pencil by slipping it into your
pocket, dropping it onto the floor or where ever you feel
is most appropriate for the situation.
Effect:
Magician has cup with pepper and water.
Volunteer puts fingers in water trying to separate the pepper
- nothing happens.
Magician puts fingers in water and the pepper separates.
Supplies:
• Water
• Soap
• Pepper
• Cup
(make sure there is a sink nearby so volunteer can wash hand)
Secret:
Put water in a cup then regular pepper.
Before show, rub soap on your fingers -- don't let anyone see you do this. (The soap will separate
the pepper)

PROBLEM SOLVING
Have you ever seen problem solvers in the patio? Have they ever helped you? Problem solvers are
there to help you sort out things that happen in the playground. They may show you a yellow card,
but only when you’ve done something very bad. If you have a problem the best thing you can do is
call one of them so that they can help you.
They should give you useful advice such as making you count to ten or making you take deep
breaths so you can calm down.
Problem solvers help a lot and an example of this is
when Fernando helped Martin and Alfonso (Y4)
because they had an argument.
“We like doing problem solving because we can
help people and make school a better place. We
think we can make school a calmer place with
problem solvers.
We also enjoy problem solving because we can
resolve issues and make less problems. In Year 6
everybody is a problem solver and they are trying
their best to be helpful!”

Where do baby animals come from?

Fantastic Mr Fox.
The main character of the story is a small penguin
called Pipkin. His sister, the seal club, his friend,
the whale, the baby turtles and a little baby.
Pipkin is a very small penguin who is always asking
very big questions. In this
story Pipkin wants to know
where babies come from.
He starts a quest to find
out the truth. I would recommend it because you
can learn that there are all
kinds of babies.
Some come from eggs and
others from their mother’s tummy.
This book was written
by Roald Dahl.
It is my favourite book
because it has a very
clever fox. For me the
best part of the book is
when the animals don’t
have food and Mr Fox
gets all the food of the
farm. I loved this book
and I recommend it to
everyone!

Anne Frank
The story is about a five
year old girl that goes to a
school with a horrible
headmistress. Matilda,
however, has a few incredible tricks up her
sleeve. So Matilda’s parents... Whack her out!
My favourite part is when
the newt jumps onto Miss
Trunchbull and she
screams her head off. I like this part because it is
funny.
Anne Frank was one of
the many people who
were alive in the time of
the horrible Nazis! She
and her family tried to
hide from them,
almost starving, but they
managed to survive.
But one day disaster
struck, the Nazis had found them…
