2011 Field Hockey Media Guide
A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the
national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues
to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic
achievement, academic success and overall participation.
More than 325 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the
student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2010-11
school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at
Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and
women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 2008-09, the program has
expanded to 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams that
have been established or re-established since 2007 alone.
And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Four
teams earned conference regular-season or tournament championships
in 2010-11 and three Valiant squads (women’s soccer, women’s hockey
and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. 13 of 21 Valiant
squads earned berths in their respective conference championships last
year, including the eighth title in 12 seasons for the women’s hockey
team and the second straight title for men’s golf. In addition, a pair of
Manhattanville squads (men’s hockey and women’s hockey) spent much
of the year nationally ranked while two more programs (men’s basketball
and men’s golf) topped the list of teams receiving votes nationally in
their respective polls over the course of the year.
On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored
in 2010-11 as well, including a pair of Freedom Conference Players of
the Year and two Freedom Rookies of the Year to go with 32 combined
All-Conference honorees. In the last 10 years, at least 35 former Valiants
have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or
overseas as well.
But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a wellrounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently
achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole,
as evidenced by the 3.20 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2011
semester and the fact that all but four Valiant teams recorded a team
GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. In addition, the department
boasted its first CoSIDA Academic All-American in 27 years and a pair of
CoSIDA Academic All-District representatives, while the department also
shattered its previous best with 114 student-athletes named Academic
All-Conference honorees.
Community service also continues to play a vital role in the studentathlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds
of community service hours each year. In addition to active involvement
with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off
campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s basketball
“Pink Zone” night and the women’s hockey “Think Pink” event to promote
cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school
was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in
2009, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive
two awards. The service aspect of the Valiant student-athlete experience
plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfill the college’s mission
of educating students to be ethically and socially responsible leaders in
a global community.

Athletic Administration
Director of Athletics Keith Levinthal
Ninth Year • Hobart ’95
Keith Levinthal begins his ninth full year as Director of Athletics at Manhattanville College in 2011-12 and continues to
establish the school as a regional and national leader in athletic success, academic achievement and community involvement.
In addition to his role as head of the department, Levinthal also serves as head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized
men’s hockey program.
Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 52
conference championships – 26 regular-season championships and 26 tournament titles – in the last eight seasons alone. In
that span, the program has also produced 27 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player
of the Year.
Manhattanville continued its recent string of very successful seasons in 2010-11, as 15 teams participated in conference
postseason play and four squads won a conference regular-season or tournament title. The Valiant women’s soccer, women’s hockey and men’s golf teams
won conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during the season, while the men’s basketball team achieved the first D3Hoops.com
national ranking in program history and the men’s golf team received votes in multiple national coaches polls for the first time. Off the field, a programrecord 114 Valiant student-athletes were named to their respective conference Academic Honor Rolls as well, while the program also earned its first CoSIDA/
Capital One Academic All-American selection in 27 years and a pair of CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honorees.
In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced
volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference
regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced
to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record five teams qualified
for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its first-ever berth in the
national semifinals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the first Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches
were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District honorees. And, for the first time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team.
Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his first full year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason
play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to the ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third
consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2004, Levinthal also received the honor of beginning a four-year term on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice
Hockey Rules Committee, serving as one of 13 overall members and one of just four from Division III institutions.
But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal
has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level
in all areas: academically, socially and athletically.
A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s
agenda has included:
Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant studentathletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting
numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies.
Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and
method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved
performance both on and off the field, and increased support from fans and alumni.
Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the
program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye.

Manhattanville Coaching Staff
Head Coach Kevin Kelly
Fourth Season • Saint Michael’s ’73
Kevin Kelly is back for his fourth season at the helm of the Manhattanville
field hockey program in 2011, continuing the task of returning the Valiants to
their position as a conference and regional power.
Despite fielding a roster with just four upperclassmen and only one senior in
2010, Kelly nearly guided the Valiants to a winning record in his third season
at the helm, posting a 9-10 overall mark. After a tough start to the year, the
squad heated up in the middle of the season, starting with a near upset of
#9 Eastern that was followed by a four-game winning streak in which the
Valiants outscored their opponents by a 20-4 score. The most exciting game
of the year came later at DeSales, when the Valiants tied the score late and
Megan Greene tallied the game-winner with only five seconds left in overtime.
Although no Valiants were named All-Conference, Kayla Meenan had one of the best statistical
seasons in program history in 2010, as she ranked second on the school’s single-season points list
with 33 (11 goals, 11 assists).
Manhattanville posted a 7-11 record in Kelly’s second season as head coach in 2009, providing
a solid base for future successes. The team’s potential was evident in the season-opening 6-3 win
over Keystone College in which five of the team’s six tallies came from freshmen. Other highlights
from the year included a dominating 8-0 win over Elms College and a hard-fought 5-4 (OT) victory
over Ramapo College.
A trio of Valiants – Jen Ascencio, Maura Bruen and Lauren Rutledge – earned All-Conference honors
from the Freedom Conference after the 2009 season, as all three players were named to the second team.
In his first season as a collegiate head coach, Kelly guided the Valiants to a 6-12 record. The team faced a very difficult schedule that featured five
nationally ranked opponents, falling to three of those teams by a single goal. In all, 10 of the Valiants’ 18 matches in 2008 were decided by one goal,
including five of the team’s six wins.
Kelly came to Manhattanville from Rye High School, where he served as the head coach of the varsity field hockey team for 30 years. He experienced
unparalleled success at the school, posting a career record of 391-56-9 (.867), and built a resume that includes four New York State championships, five
regional titles and nearly 20 league championships.

Assistant Coach Eileen O’Reilly
First Season • Franklin & Marshall ’11
Eileen O’Reilly is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Manhattanville field hockey program in 2011.
O’Reilly comes to Purchase after a decorated four-year career on the field hockey field at Franklin & Marshall College, where she
was a four-year starter and senior captain for the Diplomats. She was named to the NFHCA All-South Region and All-Centennial
Conference first team as a senior after scoring nine goals with 11 assists for a career-high 29 points, following up an All-Conference
second-team honor in 2009. She finished her career as the school’s all-time leader in assists (35) and game-winning goals (eight),
while also ranking fifth in points (95) and ninth in goals (30).
Off the field, O’Reilly was a four-time NFHCA and Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll honoree and the 2011 recipient of
the Karvasales Award, which is given to a Franklin & Marshall female senior athlete with cumulative outstanding athletic achievements
over a four-year period. In addition, she was selected as the Centennial Conference’s nominee for the 2011 NCAA Woman of the
Year Award and participated in the conference’s 2011 Snell-Shillingford coaching symposium.
O’Reilly graduated from Franklin & Marshall in May 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and American Studies, graduating magna cum laude and
as a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
In the spring of her senior year, O’Reilly served as a student assistant field hockey coach at her alma mater, coordinating drills, providing individual
feedback to players, and assisting in all aspects of practice.
A native of Mamaroneck, N.Y., O’Reilly currently resides in Purchase as she pursues her graduate degree at Manhattanville.

2011 Manhattanville field hockey Media Guide
Under fourth-year head coach Kevin
Kelly, the Valiants return 15 players from the
2010 roster and add nine newcomers to the
squad. The team, picked to finish sixth in the
Freedom Conference preseason poll, will look to
continue building towards a Freedom Conference
Championship appearance after a 9-10 season
in 2010.
Included in the 15 returners in 2011 are the
top three point scorers from a season ago. Junior
Kayla Meenan led the team with 11 goals and
11 assists in 2010 for her team-high 33 points,
which ranked second on the school’s singleseason list. Sophomore Megan Greene tallied
eight goals and three assists last season. Moving
from the center halfback position to midfield this
year will be senior Alyssa Coughlan, who in
addition to her play-making role in 2010 added
seven goals and four assists.
FORWARD
Meenan and Greene bring a strong presence
to the forward position this year after combining
for 19 goals last year.
In 2010, Meenan tied for 10th on the singleseason goals list and tied for 3rd on the singleseason assists list all time at Manhattanville.
Meenan will look to add to her career numbers
with an impactful 2011 campaign.
Greene as a freshman joined the starting
lineup last year and looks to continue her
success for the Valiants in the 2011 season.
The sophomore had a season-high two goals
against Elms last season, and also tallied two
game-winning goals against Elmira and DeSales
in 2010.
Senior Alyssa Nardone started in eight of
her 19 appearances last season. While collecting
six goals last year, three proved to be key gamewinning goals, helping in the Valiants’ nine wins.
Her three game-winning goals came in a weeklong span in October against Richard Stockton,
Wilkes and Western Connecticut.
S o p h o m o re Britney Themistocles
appeared in 14 games as a role player and
notched three goals, including a pair against
2011 Season Preview
Wilkes on October 10.
Sophomore Lindsey Stebenne came
into 14 games as a reserve and scored a pair
of goals in the season finale against Mercy in
2010. Classmate Alyssa Tourdot, who saw
action in 16 games, collected one goal and one
assist will also look to push her way into the
starting lineup.
Newcomer Amanda DeChent joins the
roster after spending her freshman year at
Division II Southern Connecticut. As a freshman
with the Owls, DeChant played in 19 games
scoring six goals and adding two assist.
Freshman Zeona Walker-Latney will also
vie for time at the forward position this season
for the Valiants.
MIDFIELD
The midfield gets a big addition as Coughlan
joins the line after starting at center halfback in
2010. Coughlan joins junior Melissa Goncalves
and several newcomers as the midfield will
look to rack up the assists passing to a strong
forward group.
Coughlan started in all 19 games for the
Valiants as a junior and scored the opening goal
of the season in a 2-1 loss to SUNY New Paltz.
Coughlan reached a season high in points with
four as she scored twice in the 8-0 shutout of
Wilkes.
In addition to the top-three scorers returning
this season is Goncalves, who started 13 games
last season and tallied a pair of goals. Goncalves
took a season high 11 shots in the September
21 game against Elmira last year and will look
for more opportunities as a starter.
Sophomore Rebecca McClintock appeared
in six games last year and will add more depth
to a successful midfield group, and will continue
to develop under the upperclassmen.
Three new freshmen come to Manhattanville
in an attempt to make an immediate impact.
Sydney Asselstine brings height and skill
to the midfield line, while Robyn Downing
brings her high school championship experience
to Purchase. The third freshman, Saba Naji,
brings speed and skill after her years playing field
hockey and running track in high school.
CENTER HALFBACK
Junior Sarah Mason moves from her
defensive position to a more offensive-oriented
spot at the center half position. Mason played
in all 19 games last year, starting in 13 of
them. She collected a defensive save against
William Smith on September 18 and will look to
contribute another solid season for the Valiant
team.
Junior
Kayla Meenan
DEFENSE
Leading the defense this year will be senior
Colleen Macedo who started in all 19 games a
season ago. Her leadership on the defensive side
of the ball will be integral to a young defensive
group. Macedo, in addition to her defense, tallied
two goals, including the game-winner against St.
Lawrence on September 19.
A trio of sophomores re-join the defensive
crew for their second year in 2011. Chelsea
Senior Alyssa Coughlan
Klein started 18 of 19 games as a freshman and
looks to add another solid campaign under her
belt. Meg Wittner also started a majority of the
games in her freshman season, starting in 15 of
her 18 contests, while also contributing a teamhigh three defensive saves. Julia Esposito
returns for her second season as well after
contributing in 16 games while starting six.
Three defenders joining the team this year
are Carly Brunco, Kateri Fischer and Drew
Moore. The trio of freshmen look to push the
current defensive core for spots in the starting
lineup this season.
GOALIE
The lone returner between the posts is
sophomore Amy Hilton, who as a freshman
saw action in four games and got a start against
Elms on September 12. Hilton posted a 2-0
record last year with decisions against Elms and
Mercy, while also seeing limited action in games
against William Smith and Wilkes. Hilton will look
to continue adding in-game experience under
her belt in 2011 as the only goaltender on the
roster to start the year.
SCHEDULE
The Valiants will open their season against
Mercy College at home on GoValiants.com Field
on September 1 at 7 p.m. before five straight
games away from home. During the five-game
road trip, Manhattanville will play a pair of
two-game tournaments at Vassar and William
Smith.
The Freedom Conference schedule begins
at home on September 24 against Delaware
Valley at 1 p.m. The home conference schedule
also includes match-ups against Misericordia,
DeSales and FDU-Florham. The contest against
FDU-Florham at 7 p.m. wraps up the regular
season on October 25.
The Freedom Conference Championship
begins with the semifinals on November 2 at
the home of the top two seeds. The highest
remaining seed will host the championship game
on November 5.

Facilities
Completed just before the start of the 2005 fall season, GoValiants.com Field is one
of the top outdoor soccer facilities in the Northeast, and home to the Manhattanville field
hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s lacrosse programs.
Surrounded by a four-pillar lighting system, scoreboard, fully equipped press box
and bleacher-style seating, GoValiants.com Field is made up of state-of-the-art Field
Turf, a technology that emulates the stability and resilience of natural grass without
the obvious maintenance. The field’s durability and elaborate drainage system allow
the Valiants to play in all kinds of weather and also allow all 21 Manhattanville athletic
teams to make use of the program for training, practice and games.
The field itself measures 120 x 72 yards and the four light poles – each 90-feet high
– let the Valiants play under the lights several times each year, something few other
Division III programs can do with regularity.
The press box at GoValiants.com Field is wired for Internet and phone access,
allowing for live video broadcasts of Valiant athletic contests through GoValiants.TV and
audio broadcasts via WMVL 88.1 FM, as well as live stats produced for every Valiant
home game. There are also ample electrical outlets and a photography bay above the
press box for use by media and team personnel. A high-powered sound system used
for pre- and in-game announcements is also housed in the press box.
Adjacent to the GoValiants.com Field is another valuable outdoor athletic venue,
Manhattanville’s outdoor grass field. The regulation-size grass field was rebuilt in 2005
and also plays host to several soccer matches during the year. While not equipped with
lights, the grass field does possess a brand new scoreboard, which can be accessed
through the press box at GoValiants.com Field.
Manhattanville’s first win at GoValiants.com Field came courtesy of the women’s
soccer team, which defeated the SUNY Institute of Technology, 2-0, in the opening
game of the Valiant Cup on September 3, 2005.
The field hockey team posted a 6-4 record in its first season on the new turf in 2005

and won three of their first four home matches, including a 3-1 victory over New England
College in its first home contest on September 8, 2005. The Valiants won a programrecord seven home games two seasons later in 2007.
Kennedy Gymnasium
Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President
John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville
Department of Athletics and also serves as the home court for the Valiant men’s and
women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs.
With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000 spectators, Kennedy Gymnasium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing homecourt advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large
balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family
and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season.
The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s
table, as well as phone and internet access that allows all Valiant games inside
Kennedy Gym to be broadcast as either an audio or video stream. New lighting
was recently installed in the gym as well in order to enhance the fan and player
experience.
In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy complex also houses a full-length
swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports
medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are
fully-staffed year round.
Kennedy Gym Facilities
Kennedy Gym’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength
& conditioning, sports medicine, locker room and office facilities, as well and a full-length
swimming pool and dance studio.
All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker
rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker
for the full season. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, members of the coaching staff
can address their team before, during and after games, while the rooms also serve as a
perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season.
The rest of the locker rooms inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker facilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning
facilities, and athletic training facilities, all of which are fully-staffed year round.
As the day-to-day administrative home of the Manhattanville Athletic Department, the
offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located
within the Kennedy Gym walls, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics administrators and support staff.
Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best accomplishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located
inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. The gym also plays host to
several camps and local recreational groups during the summer and throughout the
school year.

Strength & Conditioning
Focused on the overall development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville
Strength & Conditioning staff maximizes the athletic performance of Valiant athletes
by using the most effective and efficient training techniques to compete injury free
at the highest level of competition. The aim is to instill a sense of self-discipline,
respect and responsibility to achieve the ultimate goal of a team championship.
The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large,
state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom floor
of the Athletic Department hub, Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several
power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and
physioballs and cardiovascular machines that are available for student-athlete use
both in and out of season as well as during the summer.
In 2007, Manhattanville College opened the new Richard A. Berman Student
Center in the center of campus that includes a first-class workout area for the
general student population; as a result, Healthworks is now the exclusive strength
and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes.

Manhattanville College, located just north
of New York City in thriving Westchester
County, has been educating young people
on its beautiful 100-acre campus for over
150 years. With only 1,700 undergraduate
students, each student is able to make
a personal contribution to the campus
community in more than 50 areas of study
and 50 campus clubs. Also one of the most
diverse campuses in the area, Manhattanville
attracts students from 48 states and 76
countries.
SCHOOL HISTORY
Founded in 1841 in a three-story building
on Houston Street of Manhattan’s Lower
East Side as the Academy of the Sacred
Heart, a Catholic boarding school for girls,
Manhattanville has been educating students
in the New York area for over 150 years.
Six years after its founding in 1847, the
academy relocated to an area just north
of New York City on a hill overlooking the
village of Manhattanville. Destroyed by fire
in 1888, the academy was rebuilt on the
same foundation and continued to grow both
in curriculum and physical environment. In
March of 1917 – 76 years after its founding
as an academy – Manhattanville was
chartered as a college by the New York State
Board of Regents, allowing the school to
grant undergraduate and graduate degrees
for the first time.

Manhattanville moved to its current location
in Purchase on the former estate of New
York Tribune publisher and Ambassador to
England Whitelaw Reid. The estate included
a mansion, Ophir Hall, which has since been
renamed Reid Castle and serves as the
centerpiece of Manhattanville’s picturesque
Westchester campus.
The architectural and administrative center of Manhattanville’s campus is Reid Castle, which was built in 1892
and overlooks both the quadrangle and the school’s athletic fields. On a clear day, you can stand atop the
castle and see the skyscrapers of New York City in the distance to the southwest.

the school. The student body also is one of
the nation’s most diverse according to the

state and more than 75 countries.

study, ranging from the Liberal Arts to crossdisciplinary studies such as Environmental
Science and professional concentrations
such as Business and Museum Studies, our
students discover their passions and feel
empowered to make a difference in the larger
local, national and international communities
around us. The school offers Bachelor of
Arts, Fine Arts, Music and Science degrees,
while also housing a highly respected and
blossoming array of graduate programs.
Our students also participate in over 50
social clubs, run an award-winning radio
station, and collectively engage in over
30,000 hours of community service each
year. Many students also design their own
majors by matching interests with courses,
providing a unique educational experience
both in and out of the classroom.
Our beautiful 100-acre campus with
its historic architecture and recent
environmentally-responsible buildings is
set in thriving Westchester County. Life at
Manhattanville blends the leisurely pace of
suburbia with the rich cultural resources and
fast pace of New York City, which is only thirty
minutes away.
THE CORE VALUES
Proudly a value-oriented liberal
arts college for more than 150 years,
Manhattanville is still guided by the mission
“to educate students to become ethically and
socially responsible leaders for the global
community.”
Manhattanville is committed to following
its mission by:
• Ensuring the intellectual, ethical and
social development of each student within
a community of engaged scholars and
teachers;
• Encouraging each student to develop as
an independent leader and creative thinker in
pursuing career and personal goals; and
• Providing a diverse, inclusive and
nurturing environment which develops in
each student a commitment to service and
leadership within a global community.
In the classroom, students have the opportunity to choose over 50 different fields of undergraduate study at
Manhattanville; outside of it, there are at least 50 extracurricular clubs and organizations available for students
to discover and cultivate their passions.
A TRADITION OF SERVICE
Co-educational since 1969 and nondenominational in its governance since
1971, Manhattanville’s original vision lives
on in the tradition of service begun by the
Society of the Sacred Heart. This tradition,
which preceded the college’s charter,
determined the character the school would
have: a firm belief in the liberalizing effect of
the liberal arts, a lively sense of tradition, a
wide-ranging interest in the most humane
manifestations of the human spirit, and
a continuing effort to enhance the local
community and to accept responsibility for
this segment of human history.
As a result, countless students are
involved annually in a number of community
service and social action programs. Last
year, Manhattanville’s students contributed
over 30,000 hours of service while gaining
valuable experience in such areas as
management, teaching and advocacy.
At the heart of Manhattanville’s ethic
of community service and service learning
is the Duchesne Center for Religion and
Social Justice. The center, which coordinates
many of Manhattanville’s myriad service
programs, serves as the coordinator, catalyst
and incubator for community outreach,
cultural, leadership and spiritual initiatives
both across the Manhattanville campus and
beyond.
In addition, the Connie Hogarth Center
for Social Action works closely with the
Departments of Sociology and Political
Science and helps the next generation
of college-educated activists acquire the
practical skills and knowledge necessary for
work in some field of social change.
NEW YORK CITY
While on the school’s beautiful 100-acre
campus, students are only a 30-minute car
or Metro North train ride from New York City,
giving them the chance to blend the leisurely
pace of suburban life in Westchester with
the most populous and exciting city in the
United States.
Manhattanville’s location offers students
a unique opportunity to take advantage of
all that New York City has to offer. Whether
you want to enjoy a Broadway show, catch
a professional sports event, tour a museum
or art gallery, shop at the world’s best stores,
dine at the country’s best restaurants, or
simply stroll around and take in the city’s
many well-known landmarks such as the
Statue of Liberty or Times Square, New
York City offers something for everyone to
enjoy.
The school’s proximity to the worldwide
leader in finance, entertainment, culture
and more also offers Manhattanville
undergraduate and graduate students a
unique and exciting opportunity for jobs and
internships both in the city itself and in the
thriving New York City suburbs, including
right here in Purchase!
MY SOLDIER
Manhattanville’s most well-known social
action program was founded by a Valiant
student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan
Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally
from Venezuela who saw active combat duty
in Iraq and was commended for saving the
life of a child during his tour.
Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win
the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but
he continued that while the service was at
times challenging, “it was the letters that kept
me going. From kids, boy scouts, students. A
letter was like a piece of gold, something you
want to keep for the rest of your life.”
When Salas got back to Manhattanville,
he wanted to help his fellow soldiers
overseas and approached former College
President Richard A. Berman with an idea.
Together with Berman and administrator
Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier
program on February 14, 2004.
Participants in the My Soldier program,
who are not limited to Manhattanville
students, send letters and occasional care
packages overseas to boost the quality of
life for American troops.
A non-politically affiliated program, My
Solider has been wildly successful, with
participants from all 50 states and over
400,000 people in total, reaching more than
175,000 U.S. troops.
