2010-11 - Manhattanville College
Quick Facts and Contents
A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the
national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues
to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic
achievement, academic success and overall participation.
More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the
student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2009-10
school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at
Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and
women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 2008-09, the program has
expanded to 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams that
have been established or re-established since 2007 alone.
And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Seven
different programs earned conference regular-season or tournament
championships in 2009-10 – a total bettered by only 13 Division III
schools – and two Valiant teams (baseball and men’s golf) appeared
in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in
their respective conference championships last year, including conference championships for the baseball, men’s golf and men’s hockey programs. Three Manhattanville teams (men’s hockey, women’s hockey and
women’s soccer) also received national rankings over the course of the
year, the most in a single school year since 2004-05.
On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored
in 2009-10 as well. A program-record four Valiants – A.J. Mikkelsen and
Mickey Lang (men’s hockey), Katie Little (women’s hockey) and Dan
Fiorito (baseball) received All-American accolades, while an incredible
six players were named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville
athletes also earned two conference Rookie of the Year awards and a
school-record 49 All-Conference honors. In the last 10 years, at least 30
former Valiants have gone on to play professionally either domestically
or overseas.
But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a wellrounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently
achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole,
as evidenced by the 3.120 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2010
semester. All but four Valiant teams recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or
higher for the spring term, while a program-record 105 student-athletes
were named Academic All-Conference honorees.
Community service also continues to play a vital role in the studentathlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds
of community service hours each year. In addition to active involvement
with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off
campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s basketball
“Pink Zone” night and the women’s hockey “Think Pink” event to promote
cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school
was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards
in 2008-09, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to
receive two awards. The service aspect of the Manhattanville studentathlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfill the
college’s mission of educating ethically and socially responsible leaders
for the global community.

Manhattanville Athletic Administration
Director of Athletics Keith Levinthal
Eighth Year • Hobart ’95
Keith Levinthal enters his eighth full year as Director of Athletics at Manhattanville College in 2010-11 and continues to
establish the school as a regional and national leader in athletic success and community involvement. Levinthal also serves as
head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program.
Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected
48 conference championships – 25 regular-season championships and 23 tournament titles – in the last seven seasons alone.
In that span, the program has also produced 25 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National
Player of the Year.
The Valiants put together another very strong overall season in 2009-10, as seven different programs achieved either a
regular-season or conference tournament championship. Sixteen of the 21 Valiant programs reached their conference tournament
during the year, including Freedom Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances by the men’s golf and baseball teams.
Multiple teams ascended to new heights in 2009-10, including the men’s golf team, which won its conference title by an amazing 39 strokes, and the
women’s soccer team, which achieved the first NSCAA national ranking in program history thanks to a program-record 17 wins. On an individual level,
Manhattanville produced a program-record four All-Americans, six conference Players of the Year and four conference Coaches of the Year.
Manhattanville had one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2008-09, posting a cumulative department winning percentage of .548 (184151-6), while successfully integrating new men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track programs that raised the number of varsity sports at Manhattanville
to 21. Three teams – men’s basketball, men’s tennis and baseball – earned Freedom Conference regular-season championships, while the men’s tennis
and women’s lacrosse teams set new program records for wins in a season. The Valiants also produced two All-Americans, four conference Players of the
Year, three conference Coaches of the Year and three conference Rookies of the Year.
In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced
volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference
regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced
to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record five teams
qualified for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its first-ever berth
in the national semifinals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the first Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six
coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while two Valiant student-athletes were also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans.
And, for the first time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team.
Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his first year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason
play during the 2003-04 year.
But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal
has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level
academically, socially and athletically.
In 2004, Levinthal received the honor of serving on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The NCAA selects 13 members to serve
on the committee and only four from Division III institutions. Levinthal began his term on Sept. 1, 2004 and left his four-year post on at the beginning of
the 2008-09 school year.
A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s
agenda has included:
Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant studentathletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting
numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies.
Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and
method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved
performance both on and off the field, and increased support from fans and alumni.
Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the
program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye.

Manhattanville Coaching Staff
Head Coach Pat Scanlon
Seventh Season • Manhattanville ’03
A former Valiant on the basketball court, Pat Scanlon ’03, MS ’09 enters
his seventh season as head men’s basketball coach at Manhattanville in 201011, continuing his goal of building the Valiants into a perennial contender both
in the Freedom Conference and on the regional and national stages.
Scanlon has amassed a 104-60 (.634) career record in six seasons and
has led the team to four conference championships (three regular-season
and one tournament) in his time in Purchase. He currently sits third all-time
in career wins in program history and his winning percentage easily ranks as
the highest ever at the school, while Scanlon’s time at the helm has coincided
with the winningest six-year stretch in program history.
The Valiants had another successful year both on and off the court in
2009-10, as Angelo Laroche and Trevoy Pointer were named to the All-Freedom Conference team and the
squad boasted a conference-best eight players on the MAC All-Academic team. Also, Laroche and DeVon
Barnett received multiple awards from Manhattanville before graduation: both received Castle Pins, while
Barnett earned the President’s Prize and Laroche earned the Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award.
Scanlon’s Valiant teams have always found success off the court, staying highly involved with community
service projects and improving their GPA in every semester. During the spring 2010 semester, the team had
a cumulative grade point average of 3.18, with 12 players carrying a semester GPA of at least 3.00.
In 2008-09, Scanlon, took a team that graduated three 1,000-point scorers and four starters overall and
led it to a share of the Freedom Conference regular-season title and a berth in the conference championship
game. One year after guiding a team that scored more than 80 points per game on the offensive end,
Scanlon completely revamped the Valiants for 2008-09 and relied heavily on defense, ranking ninth in
Division III and second in program history by allowing only 60.0 points per game – including allowing
just 36 points on December 3 versus Eastern University, the fewest points given up by a Valiant team in
nearly 10 years. Scanlon’s recruiting efforts also produced the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year in
freshman Trevoy Pointer.
During the 2007-08 season, Scanlon led the Valiants to a 17-9 overall mark in their first season in the Freedom Conference, including a 9-3 mark in the conference
that tied for first place and a berth in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Valiants were one of the most exciting offensive teams in the country to watch,
as the team ranked 29th in Division III and finished eighth in program history by averaging 80.8 points per game. One of his three 1,000-point scorers from that year,
Donte Chisolm, inked the program’s first professional contact after the season by signing on with the Jersey Express of the American Basketball Association.
In 2006-07, Manhattanville had the best season in program history, finishing the year with a school-record 23 wins and achieving winning streaks of eight and nine
games over the course of the season. Under Scanlon’s leadership, the team was ranked nationally for the first time in program history and captured the program’s
first-ever Skyline Conference regular-season and tournament championships, in the process earning the Valiants their first berth in the NCAA Tournament in 28
years. The record-breaking season, which also featured the program’s first win over a ranked team (#9 William Paterson University), was capped with Scanlon and
his assistants honored by the Skyline Conference as the Coaching Staff of the Year.
From 2004-2006, Scanlon’s Manhattanville teams went 35-22, with the 2005-06 squad finishing second in the Skyline Conference and advancing to the tournament
title game before falling just short of an NCAA Tournament spot. The 2005-06 season included several memorable games, most notably Manhattanville’s thrilling
89-85 win over archrival Mount Saint Mary College in the Skyline Conference Semifinals, a game played in a jam-packed Kennedy Gymnasium. That team would go
on to earn the top seed in the ECAC Metro Tournament, where they lost a triple-overtime heartbreaker to Kean University.
In his first season as Manhattanville’s head coach in 2004-05, Scanlon led the Valiants to a 16-12 record, winning more games as a first-year coach than any
mentor in program history. Under the rookie coach, the Valiants finished fourth in the regular-season standings and advanced to the Skyline Conference Tournament
semifinals before falling to eventual league champion Farmingdale State College by a single point.
In his first season following graduation from Manhattanville in 2003-04, Scanlon served as an assistant coach with the Manhattanville men’s basketball team under
former NBA star Dean Meminger, helping lead the team to an 18-10 record. He also worked at the New York Stock Exchange as a clerk.
In the offseason, Scanlon also serves as Director of the highly successful Valiant Skill Development Camps. He also previously worked as a volunteer coach at the
prestigious Pete Newell Big Man Camp in Las Vegas for five years from 2004-08.

from 2000-03. In his four-year career as a Valiant, he became the 15th player
in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau by scoring 1,026 career
points and averaging over 30 minutes per night. As a senior captain in 200203, Scanlon helped the Valiants to a 19-10 overall record (12-4 in the Skyline
Conference) and berths in the Skyline Semifinals and ECAC Metro Quarterfinals,
averaging a team-leading 15.4 points and 34.1 minutes per game.
Scanlon earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Manhattanville in
the spring of 2003. He also received his master’s degree in Sports Business
Management from Manhattanville in 2009.
A native of nearby Bronxville, N.Y., and a graduate of Fordham Prep School,
Scanlon earned Second Team All-Bronx honors from Newsday as a senior, serving
as a team captain and leading his team in scoring.
Scanlon currently resides in Rye, N.Y., with his wife Stefanie.

Manhattanville Coaching Staff
Assistant Coach Cody Moffett
Second Season • Manhattanville ’08
A former great on the court for the Manhattanville men’s basketball team, Cody Moffett
’08 is back for his second season as an assistant coach and his first as the top assistant
alongside his former college head coach, Pat Scanlon, in 2010-11.
Moffett will continue to assist Scanlon in all aspects of the Valiant men’s basketball program,
including game and practice preparation and working with both the team’s perimeter and post
players, while also taking a more active role in fundraising, alumni relations and academic
monitoring this year.
After transferring to the school from Division I Iona College, Moffett led Manhattanville in
scoring and rebounding in each of his last two seasons at the school, finishing his three-year
Valiant career with 1,127 points – making him the 22nd Valiant to cross the 1,000-point plateau and one of only two
players to do so in just three seasons. Moffett finished his time in Purchase by averaging 13.6 points per game, the
10th-highest scoring average in school history, while his 56.3 percent career field-goal percentage ranks fifth all-time
at the school. An excellent all-around player, Moffett also currently sits seventh on the school’s career blocks list as
well with 50.
Moffett had his best season as a senior, when he was named to the All-Freedom Conference first team after leading
Manhattanville with 18.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest. He also averaged nearly four assists per game and led
the squad with excellent 57.7 percent shooting from the field that ranked 32nd in the country. Following his senior year, Moffett was named to the D3Hoops.com
All-Middle Atlantic Region second team and also earned a spot on the All-Met second team, the Valiants’ first D3Hoops All-Region representative since 2003-04.
A 2008 graduate of Manhattanville, Moffett is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Education at Manhattanville and resides in Purchase.
Assistant Coach Ed Powell
14th Season • South Carolina ’69
The second longest-tenured coach in Manhattanville history, Ed Powell is back for his
14th season as an assistant coach on the Manhattanville bench and sixth coaching with one
of his former student-athletes, Pat Scanlon, in 2010-11.
Powell works with the guards in practice while actively recruiting, scouting and assisting
with practice and game management. He was a vital member of the Valiant coaching staff
that was honored by the Skyline Conference as Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006-07, the
year that saw the Valiants win Skyline regular-season and tournament championships for the
first time and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1978-79.
Powell joined the Manhattanville coaching staff before the 1997-98 season under former
head coach Brian Curtin. He has seen the Valiants amass 11 winning seasons dating back to 1998-99 and make the
postseason in 10 of his 13 years on the Valiant sideline.
A former All-City star in the New York City Catholic School League, Powell learned from one of the best as a collegian,
playing for Hall of Fame coach Frank McGuire at the University of South Carolina. McGuire, who led the University of
North Carolina to the 1957 National Championship, won 550 games in his 30-year career, including 283 in 16 seasons
at South Carolina. While at South Carolina, Powell also played under current New York Knicks President Donnie Walsh,
who was an associate head coach under McGuire.
Powell, a longtime social studies teacher in Westchester County, currently resides in Tarrytown, N.Y.
Assistant Coach Leif Gagliardi
Seventh Season • Manhattanville ’00
A standout on the basketball court for the Valiants during his playing career, Leif Gagliardi
returns for his seventh season as an assistant coach on the Valiant bench with former
teammate Pat Scanlon in 2010-11.
As an assistant coach, Gagliardi is responsible for working with the Valiant big men while
also assisting with scouting as well as practice and game management. Gagliardi was a key
component of the Valiant coaching staff that was honored by the Skyline Conference as
Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006-07, the year that saw the Valiants win their first Skyline
regular-season and tournament championships and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first
time since 1978-79.
Gagliardi scored over 900 points during his playing career, leading the Valiants to an ECAC Tournament berth in 1999.
He posted his best season as a Valiant in 1998-99, when he led the team with 8.7 rebounds per game and ranked
second on the squad with a career-best 12.9 points per contest. Gagliardi and Scanlon saw their playing careers overlap
briefly during the 1999-00 season when, as a senior, Gagliardi averaged 11.4 points per game, second on the team,
and played in 25 games for a club that went 13-12.
Gagliardi works for Natexis Bleichroeder as an Assistant Director of the Executive Services Department. He is also
an active participant in the Big Brothers program, serving as a mentor to others.
Gagliardi currently resides in Yonkers, N.Y.

Manhattanville 2010-11 Season Preview
After failing to secure a winning record and
missing the conference tournament for the
first time since 1997 last season, head coach
Pat Scanlon and the Manhattanville men’s
basketball team is back with four returning
starters and a lot of purpose as the Valiants
look for a return to the top of the Freedom
Conference in 2010-11.
Many coaches in the Freedom Conference
appear to feel that last year was simply an
aberration for Scanlon and his squad, as the
Valiants were picked to finish in a three-way tie
for second place in the conference’s preseason
poll. DeSales led the poll with 40 points and
three first-place votes, while Manhattanville
received 38 points and a pair of first-place tallies
to tie for second with Eastern (two first-place
votes) and King’s (one first-place vote). With
the votes so spread out among the top-four
teams, there will certainly be an opportunity
for the Valiants to get back to their customary
perch near the top of the conference standings
this season.
The Valiants return four of their five starters
from last year, but do have one major hole
in trying to replace the production of Angelo
Laroche ’10. As a senior, the forward ranked
second on the team in scoring (13.6 ppg) and
was named to the All-Freedom Conference
second team as a great option both in the
starting lineup and off the bench.
Despite that loss, Manhattanville returns 11
players from last season’s team, including six of
its top-seven scorers from a year ago. Scanlon
also brought in six newcomers this year, all of
whom will look to make an immediate impact.
Together, the team’s 17 players will look to make
memories of the 2009-10 season a thing of the
past in Purchase.
BACKCOURT
The Valiants have eight capable guards on
the roster for this season, led by a talented
upperclass trio in seniors Jay Ferriere and
Lamar Glass and junior Trevoy Pointer.
Pointer was named to the All-Freedom
Conference second team as a sophomore after
Guard Lamar Glass
6
leading the team in scoring and setting new
career highs in most offensive categories. Last
year, the Dallas, Texas, native led the team in
points (14.4 ppg), assists (59) and steals (45)
while also ranking second in rebounding (4.7
rpg) and blocks (seven). With Laroche departed,
Pointer will likely assume an even greater role in
the offensive attack this season.
After battling injuries for much of 2009-10,
Ferriere will look for a healthy and productive
senior season as the point guard. In 18 games
last year, the Aussie had 57 assists and 29 steals
as a dangerous playmaker. The senior will look
for a return to his sophomore year form, when
he ranked 10th on the school’s single-season
list with 134 assists and led the squad with 57
steals.
Also looking to have a great senior season is
Glass, who ranked fourth on the team in scoring
a year ago. As a junior, the Texas native averaged
7.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in 28.8
minutes a night. This year, he will be counted
upon to both increase his offensive production
while also continuing his role as one of the
team’s best defensive stoppers on the other
end of the court.
To complement the starting three, juniors
Felipe Vargas and Jeff Ventura both will
look to contribute offensively off the bench and
potentially make their way into the starting
lineup in 2010-11. Vargas netted 6.8 points per
game in just 19 minutes a night last year and
also was the Valiants’ deadliest shooter from long
range, connecting on 44.8 percent (23-for-52)
of his attempts from beyond the arc. Ventura,
meanwhile, was another three-point marksman
for the Valiants as a sophomore, knocking down
22 three-pointers in just 242 minutes of action.
All but five of his buckets last season came from
behind the arc, proving his ability to stretch a
defense and provide a dangerous alternative
around the perimeter.
In addition, Scanlon welcomes a trio
of freshman guards who will look to make
immediate contributions on the outside. Firstyear players Mark Cannon, Chrys Malone and
Taylor Mazzei all come from successful high
school programs and will look to crack the lineup
in their first collegiate seasons in 2010-11.
FRONTCOURT
The Valiant frontcourt has a little less in
terms of experienced depth, as junior Glen
Rodriguez is the only returning starter from a
year ago. However, five other players return from
last year and three newcomers also will populate
the roster in the hopes of replacing the loss of
Laroche and Mike Horgan ’10.
As the only returning starter, Rodriguez will
be expected to increase his offensive output this
year. Last season, he ranked third on the team
by averaging 7.9 points per game and hauled
in a team-leading 5.4 rebounds per contest,
while also swatting aside a team-best 15 shots.
A career 46.1 percent shooter from the field,
Rodriguez has the ability to be a major low-post
presence for the team this season.
Senior Peter Mehmel is back for his final
season after battling injury for much of 2009-10,
and will look to re-establish himself as one of
Guard Jay Ferriere
the team’s best down-low players. In 16 games
last year, Mehmel was easily the team’s most
accurate shooter, hitting 57.4 percent (31-for54) of his attempts from the field, and averaged
4.4 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. After a
dedicated summer, expect Mehmel to come back
with a good senior season for the Valiants.
In addition, four other veterans also will
look to improve upon limited playing time a
year ago. Junior Jack Railton-Woodcock
made 10 appearances a year ago, averaging
more than a point and rebound per game while
adding four blocks and three steals in just 54
minutes. Sophomore Ivan Maggi also made
10 appearances off the bench in 2009-10,
contributing eight points and seven boards
in limited action. Junior Craig Augustine,
meanwhile, had six points and 10 rebounds in
seven games last season, while classmate Brian
Bertucci grabbed a pair of rebounds and had a
couple of steals in six appearances as well.
The Valiants also bring in three newcomers
to fill up the frontcourt, as junior Ivan Jovicic
comes to Manhattanville after two years with
Salem International University and freshmen
Jack Bramswig and Matt Cornwell both join
the team from the high-school ranks.
SCHEDULE
Scanlon has put together another tough
schedule for his team this season, highlighted
by five games against NCAA Tournament teams
from a year ago, including Freedom preseason
favorite and regional semifinalist DeSales.
Manhattanville hopes to return to the
Freedom Conference Tournament, with the
semifinals set for February 23 and the finals
scheduled for February 26 at the home court of
the higher seed.
The highlight of the year will easily come on
Sunday, December 19, when the Valiants take
to the floor at basketball mecca Madison Square
Garden to face off with local rival Purchase
College at 7 p.m. Manhattanville will look to
maintain its unbeaten streak at the World’s
Most Famous Arena after beating SUNY Stony
Brook in 1994.

2009-10 Season in Review
Despite bringing back nearly every important
piece from the previous season, the 2009-10
campaign was an uncharacteristic struggle for
head coach Pat Scanlon and the Manhattanville
men’s basketball team. The Valiants suffered
through their first losing season under Scanlon
and the first overall since 1997-98, a streak of
11 straight seasons, while also missing out on
the conference tournament for the first time
since 1996-97.
Sophomore Trevoy Pointer emerged as
the team’s best scoring option, as the reigning
Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year led the
team with 14.4 points per game and shot 46.0
percent from the field. The guard also led the
team with 45 steals, 59 assists and his 32.0
minutes-per-game average.
It was also a great final season for senior
Angelo Laroche, who set career highs in nearly
offensive category, including ranking second
on the team with 13.6 points per game and
shooting a team-leading 47.1 percent from the
field – including 35.2 percent from beyond the
arc on a team-best 31 three-pointers.
The season starting promisingly enough for
Manhattanville, as the team won four of its first
five contests of the year. In the season-opener
at Elizabethtown, Laroche showed that he would
be a major offensive presence right away by
leading all scorers with 19 points off the bench
in a tough 73-63 win.
That win was followed up by the annual
Castle Classic, where the Valiants advanced to
the title round for the third straight year with
an easy 74-49 victory over John Jay. Twelve
different Valiants recorded at least one bucket
in the runaway win, led by a game-high 15 from
Pointer, while Laroche added 12 and junior Peter
Mehmel had 10 on 5-of-5 shooting.
The team could not keep the momentum
going, however, as the home team dropped a
73-60 decision to Coast Guard in the title game.
Defense was to blame for the loss, as USCGA
shot 57.5 percent from the field on the way to
the win.
Forward
Angelo Laroche
14 Manhattanville bounced back a few days later,
defeating Hunter by a 78-68 score. This time it
was sophomore Glen Rodriguez stepping up
offensively, leading all players with 18 points and
adding six boards and three steals.
The Valiants advanced to the championship
game of the Carnegie Mellon Invitational to
close out November, but the team fell to 0-2 in
title games and settled for second place. In the
84-80 win over Hood, Pointer led four Valiants
in double figures with 23 points and added eight
rebounds, four steals and three assists in a good
overall game. The team could not keep it going
the next day against Heidelberg, however, falling
by an 89-69 score.
Turning to Freedom Conference play for the
first time all season, the Valiants got off to a
rough start with back-to-back losses to DeSales
and King’s (Pa.). In a rematch of last season’s
Freedom Conference championship game versus
the Bulldogs, Manhattanville was limited to 31.8
percent shooting and 14 total field goals in a 6642 loss. Things got no better at home against the
Monarchs, dropping a 62-59 matchup.
After closing out December with a 66-53 win
over Rhode Island College and an 89-84 loss to
Baruch, the Valiants started the New Year at
the Franklin & Marshall Tournament. The good
news was a solid 71-65 win over Brooklyn in the
first round, but the team again came up short
in a championship game, losing by six to the
host Diplomats.
Arguably the team’s worst outing of the year
came next at William Paterson, as the Valiants
fell by a 58-46 score. The 12-point margin was
actually a good result for the Valiants, as the
visitors shot 0-for-15 from the field and scored
just 10 points in the first half.
However, the squad followed up that effort
with its longest winning streak of the season, as
the Valiants won three in a row and four of five
to get back into the Freedom race.
The run started with a 73-60 win at home
over Wilkes, in which the Valiants shot a
scorching 60 percent from the field and scored
51 points in the second half alone on the way to
the comeback win. Moving onto the road at FDUFlorham, the Valiants this time knocked down 14
shots in the first half on the way to a 14-point
halftime edge and an eventual 73-63 win.
The third straight win required some extra
work, as Manhattanville and Misericordia went
into overtime to decide a winner. After missing a
chance to win the game at the end of regulation,
the team did not miss a shot from the field in
OT to pull out the 65-63 win and get to 3-2 in
conference play.
After coming out flat in a 81-62 loss on the
road at Delaware Valley, the Valiants came back
home and had their best defensive outing of the
year in a 52-35 stifling of Eastern. The Eagles
were held to 27.1 percent shooting and posted
the lowest point total of any Valiant opponent
at Kennedy Gym in over 11 years. The 35 points
allowed also were the fourth-fewest allowed in
a game in Manhattanville history.
After starting the Freedom Conference
schedule 4-3, the Valiants proceeded to drop
five of their last seven conference matchups,
Guard
Trevoy Pointer
eliminating the team from the postseason even
before a 20-point loss at Misericordia University
in the 2009-10 season finale.
Once again, a nice stretch of basketball was
followed by a bad one, as the Valiants lost four
games in a row to fall behind in the race for a
playoff berth. The final two games were both
heartbreakers, as the team came up one bucket
short in an 81-79 overtime loss at Wilkes and
then allowed a game-winning free throw in the
waning seconds of regulation in a 61-60 defeat
at Eastern.
W i t h t h e i r b a c k s a g a i n s t t h e wa l l ,
Manhattanville closed out its home schedule with
a pair of conference wins, but it was not enough
as the Valiants were eliminated from playoff
contention before the final game of the year.
Looking to avenge an earlier loss to Delaware
Valley, the Valiants shot 65.4 percent in the
second half to take down the Aggies, 77-67.
Pointer led five Valiants in double figures with
18 points, while junior Lamar Glass recorded
17 on 8-of-10 shooting.
The home team then showed up to play on
Senior Night, posting a 78-56 win over FDUFlorham to close out the home slate. Laroche
had 17 points in his final game on the Kennedy
Gym floor, while classmate Mike Horgan had a
team-high seven boards in his final home game
as a Valiant.
Knowing that the season would be over
no matter what the result, the Valiants had a
tough time in the season finale at Misericordia,
falling by a 75-55 score to the playoff-bound
Cougars.
Despite the tough ending to the season,
there were plenty of bright spots on the year
for Manhattanville, led by Pointer and Laroche.
Both players earned spots on the All-Freedom
Conference second team for the first time in their
respective careers, making the Valiants one of
just two teams (DeSales being the other) to place
more than one person on the All-Conference
squads.

Facilities
Kennedy Gymnasium
Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy
Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville
Department of Athletics and also serves as the home
court for the Valiant men’s and women’s basketball and
women’s volleyball programs.
With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000
spectators, Kennedy Gymnasium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing
home-court advantage. With bleachers lining the near
sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging
the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends,
family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville
teams throughout the season.
The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s table, as well as phone
and internet access that allows all Valiant games inside
Kennedy Gym to be broadcast as either an audio or video
stream. New lighting was recently installed in the gym as
well in order to enhance the fan and player experience.
In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy complex
also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the
department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine
facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the
building and are fully-staffed year round.
In the Spring of 2009, the men’s basketball program
unveiled new banners in the gym honoring the best
players and teams in program history. One represents
the program’s three NCAA Tournament teams (1978,
1979 and 2007), while two others list the 22 Valiant men
to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Those banners proudly
hang alongside the team’s 2007 Skyline Conference
Championship banner as well as the program’s retired
numbers.
Head coach Pat Scanlon’s men’s basketball office
was also recently moved to the space immediately off of
Kennedy Gymnasium, allowing the coaching staff easy
access to and from the court for all team games and
practices. Almost all of Manhattanville’s full and part-time
athletic staff are housed within the Kennedy walls as well,
with most residing inside the main athletics office on the
main gym level.
Kennedy Gymnasium has seen countless postseason victories from the Valiant men’s basketball team
in recent years, as the Valiants are 13-1 in conference
tournament games on their home court since the 199899 season. Arguably the most important and memorable
postseason game at the gym came on February 24, 2007,
when Coach Scanlon and the rest of the Valiant players
cut down the Kennedy nets after defeating Old Westbury,
87-68, in the Skyline Conference Championship game to
celebrate the program’s first-ever conference title and first
NCAA Tournament berth since 1979.
Locker Rooms
Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John
F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day operational home of the Manhattanville Athletic Department as well as the home court for the Valiant basketball and
volleyball teams.
Kennedy’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength
& conditioning, sports medicine, locker room and office facilities, as well and a fulllength swimming pool and dance studio.
All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several
locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her
own locker for the full season. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, members of
the coaching staff can address their team before, during and after games, while the
rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout
the season.
The rest of the locker rooms inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker
facilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities.
The offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are
also located within Kennedy Gym, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics
administrators.
Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best accomplishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located
inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. The gym also plays host
to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer and throughout
the school year.

Strength & Conditioning/Sports Medicine
Strength & Conditioning
Focused on the overall development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville
Strength & Conditioning staff will maximize the athletic performance of Valiant
student-athletes by using the most effective and efficient training techniques to
compete injury free at the highest level of competition. The aim is to instill a sense
of self-discipline, respect and responsibility to achieve the ultimate goal of a team
championship.
The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large,
state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom floor
of the Athletic Department hub, Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several
power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and
physioballs and cardiovascular machines that are available for student-athlete use
both in and out of season as well as during the summer.
In 2007, Manhattanville College opened the new Richard A. Berman Student
Center in the center of campus that includes a first-class workout area for the
general student population; as a result, Healthworks is now the exclusive strength
and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes.

quarterly auditing by Sarbanes Oxley, for enterprise One.
In December 2009, Plato became certified as a Certified Strength and Conditioning
specialist, as well as being named a National Strength and Conditioning Associate.
The Sports Medicine facilities at Manhattanville College are located inside the
hub of Manhattanville Athletics, Kennedy Gymnasium, and are the only place where
Valiant student-athletes from all 21 varsity sports come to receive comprehensive
health care from any of the Athletic Department’s three fully-certified, full-time
athletic trainers.
The athletic training staff has five main objectives: prevention of athletic injuries;
recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries that do occur; rehabilitation; health
care administration; and professional development. The athletic training staff also
has on-campus access to state-of-the-art training methods, including ultrasound
capability, electrical muscle stimulation and whirlpool treatments.
The training staff is also privileged to be affiliated with some of the best physicians in the Westchester area, benefitting from a close relationship with Plancher
Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and head team physician Dr. Kevin Plancher,
who works out of nearby Greenwich, Conn.
The Manhattanville Sports Medicine staff can be contacted throughout the day
via phone at (914) 323-7276, via fax at (914) 323-7212, or via email at

Manhattanville College
Manhattanville College, located just north of
New York City in thriving Westchester County,
has been educating young people on its beautiful
100-acre campus for over 150 years. With only
1,700 undergraduate students, each student
is able to make a personal contribution to the
campus community in more than 50 areas of
study and 50 campus clubs. Also one of the most
diverse campuses in the country according to The
Princeton Review, Manhattanville attracts students
from 48 states and 76 countries.
THE CORE VALUES
Proudly a value-oriented liberal arts college
for more than 150 years, Manhattanville is still
guided by the mission “to educate ethically and
socially responsible leaders for the global
community.”
Manhattanville is committed to following its
mission by:
• Ensuring the intellectual, ethical and social
development of each student within a community
of engaged scholars and teachers.
• Encouraging each student to apply his or
her development as an independent leader and
creative thinker to career and personal goals.
• Providing a diverse campus community whose
members know, care about and support each other
and actively engage themselves both in the local
community and beyond.
The architectural and administrative center of Manhattanville’s campus is Reid Castle, which was built
in 1892 and overlooks both the quadrangle and the school’s athletic fields.

Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win
the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but
he continued that while the service was at times
challenging, “it was the letters that kept me going.
From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like
a piece of gold, something you wanted to keep for
the rest of your life.”
When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he
wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and
approached former College President Richard A.
Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and
administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My
Soldier program on February 14, 2004.
Participants in the My Soldier program, who
are not limited to Manhattanville students, send
letters and occasional care packages overseas to
boost the quality of life for American troops.
A non-politically affiliated program, My Solider
has been wildly successful, with participants from
all 50 states and over 400,000 people in total,
reaching more than 175,000 U.S. troops.
