Welcome to the 58th annual National Tom
Sawyer Days! This marks a special time
in “America’s Hometown” as we celebrate
the independence of our great nation
with the best Fourth of July celebration
anywhere! We would like to personally
invite you and your family to explore
all the fabulous facets that Hannibal has
to offer. Hannibal is a small town big in
history and we encourage you to visit the
many beautiful and historic sites that give
our little river town its special heritage.
National Tom Sawyer Days offers something for the young and young at heart. We
even have a pet show for your best pal! As our celebration occurs on the banks of the
mighty Mississippi, we offer many of the opportunities that Tom Sawyer and his friends
experienced in downtown Hannibal. Our celebration hosts such events as fence painting,
frog jumping, Tomboy Sawyer, a fantastic parade, carnival, arts and crafts, horseshoes and
washers tournaments, mud volleyball and a spectacular fireworks show. It is also during
our 4th of July celebration that our youngest ambassadors are chosen – Tom and Becky.
Come unwind each evening by enjoying the live entertainment provided by a variety of
bands in Tanyard Gardens.
The Hannibal Jaycees would like to say “THANK YOU!” to all of the local businesses, service
organizations and especially the people of Hannibal. Your continued support is what makes
Hannibal great! We couldn’t do it without you!
We would also ask you to pause and remember our law enforcement, fire fighters and first
responders who keep us safe at a local level and our Armed Forces who protect our great
country so that we are able to celebrate our freedom every day.

The City of Hannibal would like to
welcome you to our community for
National Tom Sawyer Days. We hope
you and your family enjoy your stay, all
the events and activities, our shops and
tourist attractions, our restaurants
and hotels and all the wonderful sights
to see. Please enjoy your stay, have fun,
stay cool and don’t keep us a secret.

Tom Sawyer
Days
originated in
1956 with
the first Tom
Sawyer fence
painting
contest
sponsored by the Hannibal Jaycees
and the first “Tom & Becky” contest
sponsored by the Chamber of
Commerce. The original event took
place in May and was an out-growth
of a tour of 1200 St. Louis Missouri
children sponsored by KETC-TV,
the St. Louis based educational
television station. The fence
painting and Tom & Becky contest
were planned to add color to the
event.
Walt Disney, who like Mark
Twain was a Missouri native,
boosted the event by extending an
invitation to the new Tom & Becky
to be his guests at Disneyland in
Anaheim, California for the opening
of the new theme area “Tom
Sawyer’s Island”. The original
events which took place in May
were followed by an excursion to
Disneyland in June. In 1999, the
current Tom & Becky were invited
to the opening of the new “Tom
Sawyer’s Island” at Disney World in
Orlando, Florida.
In 1959, the event was moved
to July 4th when Independence
Day was proclaimed “Tom Sawyer
Days” through a joint proclamation
of Hannibal Mayor Clyde Toalson,
Missouri Governor James T. Blair
and Illinois Governor William
Stratton. Moving the event
combined all of the Tom Sawyer
activities with the Hannibal
Jaycees’ annual fireworks display,
creating one great holiday. The
event was eventually expanded to
include both states and became a
two day festival.
In 1961, “National Tom
Sawyer Days” was born through
a joint congressional resolution
sponsored by Missouri Senators
Stuart Symington and Edward
Long and Missouri Congressman
Clarence Cannon. The chartering
resolution stated the celebration
is dedicated to the recognition of
that most lovable, yet unpredictable
phenomenon of our American
society, the small boy and his
fascination for the big river as

immortalized by Mark Twain. Here,
amid the echoes of the Tom Sawyers
and Huck Finns of Clemens’ day
as the events of the past are reenacted, visitors discover that the
charm preserved by the author still
lives in every boy or everyone who
ever was a boy.
In 1964, the fence painting
contest was expanded when each
of the ten states bordering the
Mississippi was invited to send
a contestant, setting a tradition
still carried on today. In 1965,
the Hannibal Jaycees assumed the
responsibility for paying the local
hotel expenses for the contestants
from the ten states and have each
year since. Contestants from other
states are welcome but due to the
tremendous costs, must pay their
own expenses. Today, contestants
come from all over the United
States.
The fence painting contest is the
core event of National Tom Sawyer
Days and includes several days
of events. All local contestants
compete in the first event to
advance to the national contest. A
second event is held for contestants
from all over Missouri who also
advance to compete in the national
contest. The national event is the
final event and is held on the last
day of the fence painting events.
The winner of the national event
receives the Governor’s trophy
which may be presented to his
state’s governor and displayed in
10
the state capitol for one year. The
trophy is returned each year for the
next contest.
The National Fence Painting
Contest is a three part event with
contestants receiving points for
authenticity of costume, speed, and
painting quality. Contestants are
encouraged to read “The Adventures
of Tom Sawyer” to attempt to
capture a realistic look for their
costume. These areas are judged
by local dignitaries, distinguished
guests and the previous year’s
champion.
Fence Painting
Winners
The top 3 placing painters in the
local, state and national fence
painting contests receive
a plaque and nice prizes.
The national champion also
receives the Govenor’s Trophy
to take to his home state!

Welcome to National Tom Sawyer
Days’ super bucket of painting! The Hannibal
Jaycees are proud to sponsor our “World
Series of Whitewashing.” Fence
painting will begin with the local contest on
Thursday, July 4th with the “Over 30” Contest
immediately following. The state contest will
be Friday, July 5th. The national contest will
be Saturday, July 6th and the event will end
with our local “Toms” taking to the boards
and showing us amateurs how it should
be done. All "white wash" for this event is
generously donated by The Genuine OldFashioned Milk Paint Company.
We all know that watching paint dry is
very boring indeed, but not our contest!
The event is open to boys 10 to 13 years
of age, who show that they must have the
speed of a
jackrabbit and the skill of a surgeon in order to claim the coveted Governor’s Trophy.
The winner may take this trophy back to his state to present to the Governor of that
state. Traditionally, the Governor has been the keeper of the trophy for the next year
until it is returned to Hannibal for the next July 4th contest. Local, state and national
winners will receive a plaque and other nice prizes.
The fence painting contest is the cornerstone of the National Tom Sawyer Days
celebration with its humble beginnings dating back to 1956 as a contest based on Mark
Twain’s writings about Tom fooling his friends into painting his Aunt Polly’s fence.
Although the contest was held in Hannibal, it was 10 years before a local boy won the
national title. In 1991, the national contest saw its first ever tie, which was decided with
a two person runoff, winner take all.
Each year’s contest is open to one boy from each state. All the national contestants
will enjoy a full schedule of activities which include a ride on the Mark Twain Riverboat,
a tour of The Mark Twain Cave, the Contestants’ Luncheon, a “Get Acquainted” mixer
for the boys and their families, along with other points of interest.
All the fence painting takes place near the Boyhood Home on North Main Street. See
Schedule of Events (pages 4 and 5) for fence painting contest times.

The Hannibal Jaycees are very proud to announce that Tanyard Gardens has a new
permanent location! We have purchased the property at 320 South 3rd Street (next to the
3rd St. viaduct) in beautiful downtown Hannibal. We are very excited to have finally found
the perfect spot we can call home. We look forward to bringing National Tom Sawyer Days
and many other events to our community. Tanyard Gardens was named for “tan yard”,
formerly located in the Mark Twain historical area, where Huck Finn’s dissolute father, Pap,
slept. Tanyard Gardens is the refreshment center and general headquarters for National Tom
Sawyer Days. The Garden was begun by the Hannibal Jaycees in 1975 as a central place for
visitors to eat, drink, socialize and keep up with the many activities. The refreshment center

“Further Ado”
Further Ado is comprised with over one hundred
years of musical talent. Each member has played
in various bands throughout the Tri state area.
Jamie Fenton and Mike Gilbert played for many
years with the group Rude Awakening. Ray
Mabie was with The Easy Riders, Night Riders
and numerous other bands. Marc Meyer played
with Superimposed and has jammed with many
great groups. Danny Mabie played for over ten
years with Porcelain, Salem’s Cradle, and Predawn Hour. As we all played in
various groups through the years we remained friends, then after a couple of
failed projects Mike and Jamie was approached by Danny about playing in a
band that would play all types of music. With Ray as vocalist and Marc added on
guitar the lineup became solid.

a breath of fresh air Madd Hoss Jackson is a group that
will bring you an energetic live show with music that is
diverse as any act you have ever seen and they’ll do it

first song to the very last. Madd Hoss Jackson’s fan base
has been growing at an impressive rate all over Illinois,
Missouri, and Iowa thanks to an amazing array of shows
and venues. These include small town bars to opening slots for national acts, and 50th wedding
anniversaries to college clubs and everything in between. Madd Hoss Jackson is able to please such

“Blackjack Billy”
Blackjack Billy is Rob Blackledge, Noll Billings, Jeff Coplan,
Patrick Cornell and Brad Cummings. The driving rhythms,
rocking riffs, screaming harmonies and high octane live show
have already established this country band as a must see act of
2013. In only their first year on the road, the boys have shared
the stage with some of the all times greats ranging from Lynyrd
Skynyrd, and The Doobie Brothers to Travis Tritt and Tracey
Lawrence. Blackledge brings the Mississippi blues and soul to
Billings’ southern rock country roots as they bounce back and
forth on lead vocals, while Cornell’s driving bass and Coplan’s
hard edge tasty guitar playing dominate the stage. Cummings
holds it all down and drives the ship on the drums creating the unique sound of Blackjack Billy.
Already successful songwriters penning hit songs for other artists, BjB has teamed up with industry
veterans Doug Howard and Tony Conway in order to take their sound from the stage to your radio
in 2013. The boys are out road dogging every weekend and have already booked a full spring and
summer tour schedule as they continue building their army of fans. www.blackjackbilly.com

Tom & Becky Contest
Seventh graders from Hannibal Middle
and Parochial schools begin the process by
signing up to participate in the program. The
contestants give speeches before a panel at
their school and that committee selects 12
boys and 12 girls to vie for the title of Tom
& Becky.
The Chamber selection committee administers
two written tests to the semi-finalists, one on
Mark Twain, and one on Hannibal. A few
days later, the Chamber selection committee
conducts a 10-minute interview with each
of the contestants. Five boys and five girls
are then selected as finalists and begin
preparation of their costumes, a two-day
orientation, and the final judging, with outof-town judges, on July 1st.
The big announcement is made immediately
following the parade on July 4th when the
reigning Tom presents the new Becky Thatcher
with a slate and the reigning Becky presents
the new Tom Sawyer with a fishing pole.
Lucas Cline
& Brooke Burton
2012 - 2013 Tom & Becky
During the year, all 10 of the finalists will make appearances for the Chamber locally, around
the state and across the nation. For the last several years, Tom and Becky have visited Elmira,
New York, to see the gravesite of the Clemens; to Calaveras County, California, to participate in
the International Frog Jumping Contest and to Victorville, California, to the Huck Finn Jubilee.
Other appearances include greeting the “big” boats at the riverfront and welcoming tour groups,
visiting with tourists in the Historic District, representing Hannibal in parades around the
tri-states, attending ribbon cuttings, and conventions. In a busy year, the Toms and Beckys
will make 200-300 appearances for the Chamber. The Chamber is very proud of the 114 boys
and girls who have
served as Tom and
Becky over the last
57 years and all of the
alternate contestants
who have represented
their hometow n,
America’s Hometown,
Hannibal, Missouri.

That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life;
That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations;
That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise;
That government should be of laws rather than of men;
That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality;
And that service to humanity is the best work of life.
