Welcome to the 60th annual
National Tom Sawyer Days!
We’’re excited that you’’ve chosen
to spend some time with us in
America’’s Hometown.
This is the absolute best time of
the year to be in Hannibal and we
hope you enjoy your stay. While
you’’re here be sure to check out
all the events during our 3 day
festival. There’’s something for everyone, both young and old, from the
Tom & Becky and fence painting contests to the frog jump. Some more
old favorites will be back as well, like the reworks and our annual parade
down Broadway. We will also be back with our live entertainment each
evening at Tanyard Gardens.
A special thank you is in order for our gracious sponsors because without
their support we wouldn’’t be celebrating the 60th National Tom Sawyer
Days. Our committee members and the other service organizations
deserve a round of applause. It is through their countless volunteer
hours each year that makes this event even possible.
We also want to recognize those that serve our great nation each day and
allow us the freedom to celebrate our independence.
Thank you and enjoy the 60th National Tom Sawyer Days!
Chris Harsell & Christopher Powell

Tom Sawyer Days
originated in 1956
with the first Tom
Sawyer fence
painting contest
sponsored by the
Hannibal Jaycees
and the first “Tom
& Becky” contest sponsored by the Chamber of
Commerce. The original event took place in May
and was an out-growth of a tour of 1200 St. Louis
Missouri children sponsored by KETC-TV, the St.
Louis based educational television station. The
fence painting and Tom & Becky contest were
planned to add color to the event.
In 1959, the event was moved to July 4th
when Independence Day was proclaimed “Tom
Sawyer Days” through a joint proclamation of
Hannibal Mayor Clyde Toalson, Missouri Governor
James T. Blair and Illinois Governor William
Stratton. Moving the event combined all of the
Tom Sawyer activities with the Hannibal Jaycees’
annual fireworks display, creating one great
holiday.
In 1961, “National Tom Sawyer Days” was
born through a joint congressional resolution
sponsored by Missouri Senators Stuar t
Symington and Edward Long and Missouri
Congressman Clarence Cannon. The chartering
resolution stated the celebration is dedicated
10
to the recognition of that most lovable, yet
unpredictable phenomenon of our American
society, the small boy and his fascination for the
big river as immortalized by Mark Twain. Here,
amid the echoes of the Tom Sawyers and Huck
Finns of Clemens’ day as the events of the past
are re-enacted, visitors discover that the charm
preserved by the author still lives in every boy
or everyone who ever was a boy.
The fence painting contest is the core event of
National Tom Sawyer Days and includes several
days of events. All local contestants compete in
the first event to advance to the national contest.
A second event is held for contestants from all
over Missouri who also advance to compete in
the national contest. The national event is the
final event. The winner of the national event
receives the Governor’s trophy which may be
presented to his state’s governor and displayed
in the state capitol for one year. The trophy is
returned each year for the next contest.
The National Fence Painting Contest is a three
part event with contestants receiving points for
authenticity of costume, speed, and painting
quality. Contestants are encouraged to read “The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer” to attempt to capture
a realistic look for their costume. These areas are
judged by local dignitaries, distinguished guests
and the previous year’s champion.
FENCE PAINTING WINNERS
The top 3 placing painters in the local, state and
national fence painting contests receive a plaque
and nice prizes. The national champion also receives
the Govenor’s Trophy to take to his home state!

Miller Spectacular Shows is a family owned and operated carnival based out
of Greenbrier, Arkansas. Johnny and Sue Miller have taken what was once
considered a small ““county fair”” carnival and grown to be one of the larger
carnivals in the central United States. Their son Freddy and his wife Patsy
operated the 2nd unit for many years, and expanded the ride arsenal to over
55 rides. They are now leading the company into the future with an optimism
that can only come from someone with a strong desire to provide only the
best in ““family entertainment.””
We are now beginning our 5th generation with Freddy and Patsy’’s two sons,
Trey and Drew. They have both been owner-operators with the company for
several years now. The newest addition to the family is Trey’’s wife, Katie. It’’s
exciting to see them starting to play an active role in the day to day operations.
We have been entertaining crowds ranging from small festivals to State fairs.
Our midway has operated in more than 18 states and the Bahamas and we
are anxious to see where the future takes us.

FRIDAY, JULY 3 RD | GATES OPEN AT 5:30PM
Natalie Stovall and The Drive are relentless road warriors, amassing over 200
dates each year across college campuses, clubs, festivals and military bases
around the world. Natalie Stovall, a Tennessee native, is a powerhouse vocalist
and multi-instrumentalist, who has been playing professionally since she was
ten. A fiddle phenom, Natalie made her Grand Old Opry debut at the age of
12, and has been performing everywhere from the White House to The Oprah
Winfrey Show. James Bavendam (Seattle, Washington) on drums, and guitarists
Miguel Cancino (Santiago, Chile) and Joel Dormer (Redding, California) are the
powerhouse musicians who make up the Drive.
Natalie Stovall and The Drive released their debut single and EP (Produced by
Paul Worley) in 2014 to rave reviews:
California native and Capitol Records rising country star Jon Pardi
released his debut album, Write You A Song, on Jan. 14, 2014. The release
features Top 10 single, “Up All Night,” as well as the Top 25 “Missin’ You
Crazy.” Pardi has a laid back, fun-loving approach towards life and it
comes through in his music and his raucous live show. His charisma and
authenticity strike a chord with county audiences, as he wins over fans
one-by-one and show-by-show. He is now selling out venues from the
Pacific Northwest to South Georgia and stops all along the way.
Pardi’s sound is undeniably country — paying homage to some of his
musical heroes such as Dwight Yoakam, George Strait and Alan Jackson. Discovering his ability for performance back at the tender age of three
when he sang ALABAMA karaoke with his grandmother, Pardi has since
shared the stage with Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, Eric Church and many
more of today’s hottest country artists. Look for upcoming dates in your
area plus more at www.JonPardi.com.

Rolling Stone Country – “With a fiddle as her weapon and a booming voice,
Natalie Stovall and her powerhouse band recently shook the pews at their Grand
Ole Opry debut...Stovall plays the fiddle like it’s Joe Perry’s Les Paul.” - June 1014
People – “With her high voltage live show, Stovall and her fiddle prove country
chicks can rock as hard as any guy”
Billboard – “Stovall is the real deal-instrumentally and vocally-one of the ten
country artists to watch in 2014”
Natalie Stovall and The Drive are currently in the studio recording new music for
a 2015 release and tour.
