About Hanalani Schools
Aloha Hanalani Ohana,
Hanalani Schools began as a nursery program in Wahiawa. In 1952, Grace Chapel acquired the NCO building on Wilikina Drive and
became King’s Bible Church and School. In the early 1960s, under the leadership of Dr. Wallace Sugimoto, the preschool grew into an
elementary program.
Our theme for the year’s Royal Fund was “In the Blink of an Eye.” Here we are, and another year has zipped past. Time waits for
no one; but if you can pause for a breather, you will see incredible growth and changes in your child and in our school. We tend
to pause in May, as our efforts center around the graduation ceremonies—K5, 6th, and seniors, and we marvel at the incredible
growth and accomplishments throughout the year.
The K5 students, the little three-year-olds who were enthusiastically shuffling down the hall of the Early Childhood building,
proudly lugging a backpack half their body size, are now finishing K5—confident and spry individuals. The 6th graders who started the year shorter than their teacher and parents, now show signs of surging taller, awkwardly perhaps, as hormones rage. The
mighty seniors, young adults, who are confident, skillful, and articulate, are anxious for the new challenge of the adult world. All
this happens in “the blink of an eye.”
Hanalani is about helping each child find his or her dream and preparing each to achieve that dream. It is a privilege to invest in
these young lives who really are the future of our island and our country. We truly consider the opportunity to partner with each
family—a privilege which we hold dearly. Our faculty and staff pour their lives into the students. We believe that mentoring the
next generation is the greatest investment in the world. We appreciate your support-financially, prayers, kind words, volunteer
hours, community partnerships, and more.
It is important to pause and see the wonderful development happening in our children’s lives. The demands of our jobs sometimes
drive us hard. So, it is my hope and prayer that our busy parents will slow down enough because our children grow up “in the blink
of an eye.”
In 1973, King’s School became an independent school and renamed itself Hanalani, meaning Heaven’s Work. In the 1970s, the school
continued to expand and graduated its first class in 1977. Growth brought challenges. The school met on two campuses, the elementary at the Wilikina site, and the high school at the YMCA. Hanalani needed a new site which would enable the student body to be on
one campus. In the late 1970s, Mililani Town offered the school six acres for $350,000. For a small school, that was an enormous price.
Sensing God’s leading, the staff and families held carnivals and other fund raising events. Then in 1980, the school handed Castle &
Cooke a check; and Hanalani had a new home. Increment I was dedicated in 1982, and the Nishikawa in 1986. The entire school was
finally together. The Fremont, Weinberg, and Student Activity Center were later additions. An incredible partnership--a sacrificial staff,
passionate parents, loyal community partnerships, and an awesome God! In 2000, Hanalani earned full accreditation status through
the HAIS and WASC.
In 2009, the Hawaii Community Foundation recognized Hanalani as a School of the Future in its efforts to prepare students for leadership in the 21st century. Beyond instruction in the core subjects, the faculty create a wide variety of co-curricular activities. In 2010 and
2011, Hanalani won the International Botball Tournament at the Global Conference on Educational Robotics.
What endures today, is a commitment to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, to have a capable and caring faculty and staff, and to provide a nurturing environment in order to inspire and equip children to dream and thrive. The school’s core values are “Love God. Love
Others. Challenge Yourself.”

Our primary mission is to train the children “of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10) and provide opportunities for all children to
hear and receive the gospel of Jesus Christ. From a Biblical foundation, we strive to develop students' intellectual, emotional, and
spiritual capacities in a wide variety of fields and to lead students to a deeper worship of God and closer conformity to the image
of Christ.

About the Annual Report
Hanalani Schools would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge and thank the many people who support our school in different ways. We realize that as a school, we would not be where we are today if it were not for the dedication and commitment of our
faithful constituents. Our goal for this report is to give a glimpse of the great things that God is doing in our school and the impact
the gifts, time, work, and prayers have in our students' lives.

ROYALS GOLF CLASSIC
For the very first time in Hanalani Schools' history, our school hosted its 1st Annual Royals Golf Classic on Friday, June 20. The goal of this
event was to raise funds for scholarships for our students and future students: to give opportunities to other children in our area. Many
faculty and staff, board members, students, alumni, and friends of Hanalani participated in this event.
A big mahalo to the many donors, sponsors, and golfers who made this event possible. Because of the generosity bestowed upon us this
year, we are able to support families committed to excellence at Hanalani Schools through the Royal Merit Scholarship Fund.

Class of 2004 Celebrates 10-year Reunion by Krista Catian
The Class of 2004 partnered with Hanalani Schools to celebrate its “10-Year Class Reunion” this past summer from June 13-14. The
two-day reunion consisted of an alumni only meet-and-greet dinner on the first night at the Seven Palms Bar and Grille. Alumni
were greeted with fresh flower leis, beautiful décor, centerpieces and favors in the school theme colors of purple and gold, and a
beautiful sunset view of the Navy and Marine Corps golf course. The casual dinner allowed each of the classmates to get acclimated
with one another after the time apart. Games were played, high school memories were shared, and many photos were taken to
capture that night.
The following morning, Hanalani Schools hosted a school tour and luncheon for the alumni and their families. The school tour was
given by Hanalani Schools Head of School Mr. Mark Sugimoto, which gave the alumni an opportunity to see firsthand how the
campus has developed throughout the past 10 years. It was an unforgettable experience for many as we toured through the completed gymnasium. Our high school graduation was held in that gym when it only had a roof, four concrete walls, concrete flooring,
a stage, and dim lighting. It was amazing to see the finished product, knowing we were the first class to graduate there. As the tour
continued, the alumni gained a stronger sense of pride knowing how much the school has grown throughout the years. At the
end of the campus tour, the Class of 2004 had a surprise from the school as we dug up our time capsule and revealed memorabilia
items that we buried a week before high school graduation back in 2004. Many of the items were damaged, but we were able to
recognize a few photos and letters that were placed in the time capsule. That was a unique experience many of us will never forget.
Alumni, family, faculty, and staff enjoyed the rest of the day with a catered lunch, fun games, great prizes, and fellowshipping. As the
evening progressed, the reunion continued in Waikiki as a few alumni and their family members checked into a hotel in the heart of
Waikiki to enjoy the city. Everyone met for a nice dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, where we ate together as an entire class during
our Project Graduation in 2004. Our “10-Year Class Reunion” turned out to be successful for our class and the school as it was the
