THE ART DEPARTMENT is proud to announce Kathrene Garcia as
Jan Piedra
their selection as the OutstandingDepartment
Senior for Chair:
2013-2014.
She has
been a student in many art classes throughout her high school years at
Willowbrook High School, and she earned A’s in all of them. She completed her assignments with the attention to detail that comes from careful planning, designing and execution of her ideas. In Advanced Placement Studio Art she produced high quality pieces in both her concentration and breadth as we prepare our extensive portfolios.
Her class preparation and work ethic are exemplary and the way that she develops concepts
into visual products is a representative of the creative practice. The artistic process prepares students with 21st Century skill sets such as innovative thinking, collaboration, practicing, reflection and revision. Kathrene embodies these intellectual and creative processes.
Taking great care to prepare herself for postsecondary studies, she has assumed multiple
responsibilities that give her training to be successful in balancing the rigor of a demanding
college schedule. Kathrene is enrolled in many Advanced Placement classes, is a captain on
the cross country team, involved in school plays, volunteers and participates in the Anima
Singing Choir. She has earned multiple honors including the Math, English, Spanish, Art and
National Honor Societies. She has a broad foundation in advanced courses, leadership experience, college preparation, extracurricular endeavors and community volunteering. She
will be attending Macalester College in the Fall.
Department Head: Janis Piedra
The Outstanding Senior representing the CAREER AND
TECHNICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT for 2013-2014 is
Mohammed Omer Raza. Omer (Mohammed) has demonstrated excellence in a multitude of CTE courses, clubs, and activities, including:
Accounting I Honors, Business Law Honors, Entrepreneurship Honors,
Business Explorations, Home Repair & Maintenance, Computer Repair,
and Introduction to Business. Omer is a member of CTE/COD Leadership Academy, Student Council, Key Club, MSA, Chess Club, Philosophy

Society, Math Team, and the Blue Crew. He volunteers in his community, for the Senior Service Project, and has been an athlete in tennis for two years at WBHS.
Omer actively performs above and beyond for students and staff at Willowbrook and is truly
representative of the Warrior Code. Omer’s dedication,

attitude toward everyone made him soar to the top of the list of CTE candidates for this
award. Omer sets high standards and goals for himself and works continuously to achieve
them. His leadership attributes are demonstrated frequently as he mentors classmates in
the many activities he participates in; all while making time for successful academic work!
Omer is one of the most thoughtful, caring, and kind individuals our CTE departmental
teachers have had the pleasure of teaching. Omer plans to attend Benedictine University to
major in Business Management.

THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT has selected Gregory Ross as their
Outstanding Senior for 2013-2014. Gregory’s current and Former AP
English teachers, Mrs. Terri Woebel and Mr. Brian Shanahan stated that
Greg’s writing is amongst the best they have seen in their careers. Mr.
Shanahan even stated that he will place Greg’s essays “at the bottom of
the stack as a kind of ‘reward.’” He is an insightful young man who is
intuitive, generous, and exudes a profound respect when he both writes
and speaks.
Greg’s successes at Willowbrook are underscored by his involvement in National English
Honor Society, NHS, Key Club, Econ Challenge, New Beginnings Program, and Blue Crew.
Fascinatingly, Greg has been involved in an organization called Grand Canyon Youth, where
young people have the opportunity to conduct a ten-day geological research study where
they gather data regarding water levels, vegetation, etc. He has also been involved in Habitat for Humanity in Washington, D.C. His genuine care for others radiates from all that he
selflessly gives to others.
Greg stated of his English experiences that though English has specific guidelines, it provides “a creative responsibility around one-self.” His English classes have provided him
with self-initiative and confidence to find creative freedom, which he loves. Though he is
undecided as he heads off to the University of Chicago in the Fall, Greg stated that “I am very
interested in writing, whether journalism or whatever I do, writing will put me on the path
of what I love.”
Department Head: Brett Blair
The LEARNING SERVICES team is honored to announce
Shelly Williams as the Outstanding Senior for 2013-2014. Over his
high school career, Shelly has demonstrated a commitment to continual
personal growth. Each year, he sought out new challenges, both in his
classwork and the larger school community. When encountering a personal setback, he views it as an opportunity for improvement--a testament to his character. Shelly describes himself simply, but eloquently: “I
work hard to do better. I choose to live at a high standard.” According to
Mrs. Morris, “Shelly excels in all areas of education. He has truly gotten
the most out of his high school experience, both academically and in extracurricular activities. Best of all, he is nice to everyone.”
Countless faculty members have remarked that Shelly leads others by example. Mr. Engel
applauds Shelly for his involvement and leadership in the Young Men of Color group. Additionally, he has been a part of the football and track teams while at Willowbrook. Shelly will
attend Mesa College in Arizona next year, and plans to study Game Technology. We are
certain that Shelly will continue to have great success in all aspects of his life. Congratulations Shelly!

Emily Gornick is the Outstanding Senior in MATHEMATICS for the
2013-2014 school year. Emily is an excellent model of the Warrior Code:
Be respectful, be responsible and be engaged. She comes into her math
classes daily, prepared with a positive attitude towards her teachers, all
her peers and for math. She is a talented student with the intelligence to
do anything she desires academically. Emily is currently enrolled in Calculus BC. Emily makes sure that every day she leaves class completely understanding the concepts necessary for success. She is a self-motivated
student who knows when to ask the right questions to raise her level of
her understanding as well as the understanding of the class. Her work
ethic is exemplary.
Calculus BC is the highest-level math class offered at Willowbrook High School. Applications
of Calculus spread into areas of science and engineering and are used to solve problems for
which algebra alone is insufficient. Qualities needed to be a successful Calculus student include dedication, patience and creativity. Emily uses those qualities to think of alternative
ways to solve problems. Calculus moves quickly throughout the year and can cause some
students difficulty. Emily, however, thrived in Calculus, making even some of the most difficult topics appear easy.
Emily has also chosen to put her mathematical talents to use by being a valued member of the
Willowbrook High School competitive Math Team. She continually scored well at the Math
Team meets and was a state qualifier this past year. Congratulations to Emily!
Department Head: Margaret Dickow
THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT has selected Samuel Dando as their Outstanding Senior for the 2013-2014 school year. Sam Dando played in
the Willowbrook High School orchestra throughout his entire high school
career. He has also played in the Jazz Band, Concert Band, Show Choir,
Guitar Ensemble, and Pit Orchestra.
Excelling in both electric and upright bass, Sam has gone on to receive
IHSA’s Solo & Ensemble “Best in Room Award,” as well as the Willowbrook High School Music Booster’s Scholarship and qualified for ILMEA in
Jazz and Orchestra.
Sam has also worked with many community bands and orchestras and played in his church for
three years. Sam is also a part of the Math Honor Society, World Language Society, English
Honor Society and is a Human Relations Award winner. He plans on attending Northern Illinois University in the fall to major in Music Business.
Department Head: Karyn Wolcott
Department Outstanding Student Awards
THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT is proud to announce that
Brock Johnson has been selected as our Outstanding Senior for the
2013-2014 school year. Brock has been enrolled in Individualized
Fitness and Training (IFIT) for the past two years and has served as a
role model to our students. Brock has consistently scored at the highest-level on our Presidential Fitness Testing. He is self-motivated,
focused, and respectful. Brock is the type of student-athlete who arrives early to class in order to have more time to train. Brock has
been involved in athletics both in and outside of school during his
time at Willowbrook. He has excelled in rugby and has played all over the world. He is
currently a candidate to make the 2014 Youth Olympic Rugby team. His self-discipline,
commitment to excellence, and ability to work well with others will ensure his success in
the future.
In the fall, Brock will attend Marquette University in Milwaukee and major in Communications.

THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT is proud to select Molly Kuenstler as the
Outstanding Senior for 2013-2014. Molly is highly regarded in the
Science Department. Mr. John Fouser describes her as “a motivated person with a lively personality. She has an affinity for science which shows
itself through her curiosity for the natural world that surrounds us. Molly
was a dedicated student every year that I had the pleasure of teaching her,
and has carried on the tradition of being a big help as a student lab assistant.” Mr. Timothy Lavorato says, “Molly is an extremely self-motivated
student who was mature beyond her years in freshman biology. She took
pride in her work each and every day.” According to Mrs. Megan Graham,
“Molly is a very hard working individual. I have yet to see another student ever who can hold
a candle to her work ethic. She will do whatever it takes to achieve the very high goals that
she sets for herself. She is always well prepared for class and has a great deal to offer to any
class of which she is a member. Molly is a very powerful, inspiring leader in a classroom situation. She has a brightness about her that makes the entire class shine, and the gift of elevating
the entire class to her level through her comments and questions. In class, Molly is every minute a joy. She works well with all students in the classroom and laboratory setting. I admire Molly's sense of justice. Molly is compelled to “do the right thing” no matter what is going on around her. She is the kind of student that every teacher looks forward to seeing every
day.”
Molly will be attending the Naval Academy in Annapolis where she will study Chemistry in
the field of Pre-Medicine. She hopes to become a physician or a researcher after she graduates. We wish her the best of luck and look forward to hearing about her accomplishments in
the future.

by Social Studies faculty members as someone who is responsible, hard
working, courteous, sincere, and intelligent with a genuine and unyielding passion for learning. He is intrinsically motivated and always enriches the environment of those around him. Shaun enjoys being in the

Congratulations Shaun!
Department Head: Peter Montgomery
THE WORLD LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT is honored to have
