Theatre Works supports artists develop their artistic practice and present new
works.
PROGRAMMING OBJECTIVES
We support a range of genres and styles however we are most passionate about new work; this can be
devised, new writing, or a new interpretation of an existing script. We want to work with artists who are
investigating form and genuinely interested in bringing new stories to the stage. Our venue lends itself to
works of scale however we’ve also presented and supported a number of solo works. We want artists to
think about why their work needs to exist in our space. We also want artists to think about how the space
can be used. We like it transformed. We like to surprise our audiences. We want our season to be a
platform for both emerging artists and more experienced artists. We are interested in big ideas and we are
interested in supporting curious artists to develop their ideas. We want our stages to represent the rich
diversity of our society. We continue to be interested in the exchange between artists and audience. The
work we program usually gets programmed because the artists have a compelling vision and have a really
clear idea about what they are exploring and some idea of the journey that they will go on in order to
make the work. Some of the most interesting works over the last few years have had a really strong
aesthetic and all design elements have played a crucial part in the realisation of the work.
VENUE FACILITIES
Black box space – 144 seats

The Blue Room Theatre (WA)

18 Sept – 2 Oct
Susannah Day has worked across a range of arts and events environments including Fringe World, the Edinburgh
Fringe Festival, Frantic Assembly (UK) and The Blue Room Theatre where she has held the position of Producer since
2012. The Blue Room Theatre runs a year-round performance program over two small black box spaces and
primarily exists to support the development and presentation of new contemporary theatre. 18 Sept – 23 Sept
Kerry O’Sullivan started as an independent artist in the space and is now the Executive Director of The Blue Room
Theatre in Perth, WA – the home of independent theatre and performance. The Blue Room curates Summer Nights:
the handcrafted program of theatre and dance as part of Fringe World and a peer assessed program for the
Development Seasons that are an open application. 26 Sept and 2 Oct
PROGRAMMING OBJECTIVES
At the heart of The Blue Room Theatre’s mission is an artistic home and venue for artists to present their work and
professionally develop their skills in a supportive and relatively financially risk free environment. We exist for
independent artists and act as a resource hub to broker the symbiotic relationship between audience, industry,
media and artist to help facilitate sustainable careers in performing arts. The Blue Room Theatres are activated for
over 40 weeks annually, across three seasons of performance.
Summer Nights as part of FRINGE WORLD presents approximately 30 high-quality, diverse and contemporary live
events from locals as well as interstate and international artists. In 2015 we welcomed over 11,000 people through
our doors, achieved over 84% attendance and won our fourth consecutive FRINGE WORLD Best Independent
Program award.
Our two Development Seasons support the development of fifteen premiere productions from April – December
annually. The Development Seasons offer artists a $2000 production fund, 90% of the box office, no venue or staff
costs and a supportive environment in which to present a new piece of contemporary performance. Applications for
seasons are traditionally due Sept and March each year. Artists from around the corner and across the globe were
invited to submit work which breaks boundaries and tears up rule books. Sure-fire experiments, fledgling ideas and
tried and tested audience pleasers were equally welcome.
2015 Melbourne Fringe Tour Ready Presenter Directory
VENUE FACILITIES
A bustling artistic hub with two intimate black box performance spaces of 50 and 73 pax respectively. There are two
rehearsal rooms for hire and we are nestled in the heart of the Cultural Centre with PICA, the State Library, WA
Museum and Art Gallery of WA just a stone’s throw away. Each theatre comes equipped with lighting and sound
equipment.
If accepted into the Development Seasons all rehearsal space, venue, staffing and most resources are free or heavily
subsidized.
We are not a ‘for-hire’ space – all programming must meet our programming objectives and support the
development of independent theatre and performing artists in Australia.
USUAL TARGET AUDIENCE
Our audiences are loyal and love to take a risk. Curious, interested in new artists and new work. They want to see
fresh ideas and what artists have to say about living here and now. They are usually tertiary educated, early adapters
of technology and not faint of heart.
Our first season of 2015, achieved a 90% capacity. We don’t exist to target a particular age group, but due to our
strong support of emerging to mid-career artists, around 30% of our audiences are 24-35. Our audience like us
because our price point is between $15-$25 for a ticket and our bar is the cheapest in town.

We are working to build our ‘fringe’ and ‘cabaret/ burlesque’ audiences, using our 120 seat black box space –

I am currently the Arts & Culture Manager for Glenelg Shire Council,
based in and managing the Portland Arts Centre. Assisted by a small but committed staff, we deliver a
comprehensive Shire-wide Arts Program, consisting of inbound professional performances, exhibitions and
community arts activities.
PROGRAMMING OBJECTIVES
We currently program 26 – 30 shows per year, with about 75% of these presented in Portland (population
10,000). Of the remaining 25% of the shows, most are presented in Casterton (population 1,700), which is
100km north-west of Portland, and one or two shows per year in Heywood (pop. 1,700) 26 m north of
Portland. We always aim to deliver high quality shows, the bulk of which could probably be described as
potentially of broad interest within given genres. However, we also try to include some riskier, unusual,
“cutting edge” shows, which encourage people to engage with performance experiences beyond what they
might otherwise consider. In this context, please note that Portland Arts Centre is currently a member of
the ‘Roadwork’ consortium.
VENUE FACILITIES
Portland Arts Centre:
intimate theatre space with raked seating for 144, stage 6.8m deep, 10.5m
wide, 8.8m across the Pros Arch.
Portland Civic Hall:
large auditorium seating a maximum of 550 on stackable chairs on a flat
floor; stage 9m deep, 16m wide, 10m across the Pros Arch.
Casterton Town Hall:
building is art deco/moderne in style; fairly large auditorium seating a
maximum of 250 on stackable chairs on a flat floor; stage 9m deep, 16m wide, 10m across the Pros Arch.
Heywood Community Hall: fairly large auditorium seating a maximum of 300 on stackable chairs on a flat
floor; stage 9m deep, 16m wide, 10m across the Pros Arch.
An Elevated Work Platform (EWP) is available for use in all four venues.
USUAL TARGET AUDIENCE
We currently have c.2000 people in our database. A small percentage of these attend a significant number
of shows each year, across a range of genres. Otherwise, patrons tend to target those shows that are of
particular interest to them. As a result, attendances vary considerably from show to show, but this is to be
expected in a context where there is no subscription season on offer.
