News & Notes
Steve Saleen takes action and protects his valuable name
Orange County, California. (July 17, 2009) Steve Saleen and
his company, Steve Saleen’s SMS Supercars, announced today
that they have filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court in California,
seeking an order directing MJ Acquisitions, Inc. to cease and
desist from promoting their products under the Saleen name in
any form. Concurrently, Mr. Saleen is also seeking additional,
related remedies from the company that formerly carried his
name. This action is an additional move to continue to protect
the name, reputation, and brand value of Steve Saleen, and to
reassure his loyal customers, dealers, and car enthusiasts that
only Steve Saleen’s SMS Supercar performance vehicles
and products are genuine and deserving to carry his name.
Steve Saleen ceded control of the company he founded,
Saleen, Inc., in 2003 and left it completely in the spring of 2007
without any further management association.
The nonenthusiast corporate executives sold a number of assets to a
company by the name of MJ Acquisitions, Inc., changed the
company’s name, and in early 2009 ceased operations altogether.
True Steve Saleen performance vehicles again available in
the market
After having left his previous company, Mr. Saleen started Steve
Saleen’s SMS Supercars in 2008 and unveiled his newest creation, the SMS 570 Challenger, in January of this year. After
having participated in the 2009 National American Dealers Association show as part of the official Chrysler Group display,
Steve Saleen’s SMS Supercars successfully launched the SMS
570X Challenger and the new SMS 296 Supercharger at the
New York International Auto Show in April of 2009, where many
media ranked them among the stars of the show. Steve
Saleen’s SMS 460 and 460X Mustangs were announced at the
45th Mustang Anniversary show in Alabama in April, with more
info and images to be released this weekend at the Mustangs
Northwest Roundup in Seattle and during the 2009 Mustang
Week in Myrtle Beach starting Monday, July 20.
Steve Saleen steps up and protects his brand, name, reputation and customers “SMS Supercars is the new
Saleen” (Steve Saleen)
In April 2009, Steve Saleen announced support for his customers and dealers affected negatively by the demise of the company that long carried his name. In a statement issued in April,
he said: “The company I launched a long time ago announced it
will no longer honor its product warranties, nor will the acquiring
company for those assets, MJ Acquisitions, Inc. This kind of
‘customer treatment’ damages my reputation, misleads customers, and cannot be left unaddressed.” Steve Saleen announced
that SMS Supercars would guarantee the warranties that MJ
Acquisitions abandoned.
Mr. Saleen went on to say: “It amuses me that faceless executives and wannabes are trying to misrepresent themselves as
some kind of continuation of Saleen, which they are not. SMS
Supercars is the true Saleen. It is the only company I endorse,
the only company entitled to use my name and legacy, and the
only company that carries my signature on its products, because
they are my products. The legal action we have undertaken
today will emphasize once and for all that the only genuine
Saleen products are mine.

Mustang 45th Anniversary Celebration
Text by Betsy Beyer
Photos by Rudy Beyer, Betsy Beyer, and Debbie Blaylock
The Mustang Club of America hosted the Mustang 45th Anniversary
Celebration at the Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama, east of
Birmingham. Over 2000 Mustangs registered for the events held on
April 16-19, 2009. The event had a limited 250 Mustangs registered for
the Judged Classes. Other Mustangs were registered for display. Racing was held on the road course. An estimated 50,000 people attended
the event.
The Saleen Owners and Enthusiast Club, SOEC, hosted Steve Saleen's
activities at the SMS tent located in the vendor area. To prepare for
Steve's arrival, Rudy and Betsy Beyer arrived early on Wednesday, April
15th to meet the car transport truck that delivered three of Debbie
Blaylock's (SOEC President) Anniversary Saleens - the SA20, SA15,
and SSC (5th Anniversary). While detailing the cars, Denise Rounds,
editor for Ford Auto Trader Magazine stopped to admire the Saleens.
She and her photographer spent two hours photographing the SA15 for
future use on the cover of one of their issues. They spent another two
hours photographing Rudy and Betsy's 2007 Supercharged S281
Saleen for possible inclusion in the 2010 Mustang Milestones. Look for
these in the coming year.
The SA10 arrived Thursday morning
with Debbie and Marilyn Peek, SOEC
Membership Director. Molly Saleen
also arrived Thursday morning to coordinate set-up for the SMS display. It
was a busy day going to Home Depot
and other stores to get supplies, hanging banners, calling about tables and
chairs, lining up the four Anniversary
Saleens as well as the Doug Boring’s
Saleen Sportruck Race Truck and
Saleen Race Car, waiting in line to buy
lunch, realigning the four Anniversary
Saleens, and doing the final detailing.

After the work was done, the set-up crew, including Molly Saleen, joined Molly Saleen, Rudy Beyer, Michael Hipps, Debbie Blaylock
other SOEC members for dinner at a near by Logan's Roadhouse.
(SOEC President), Chuck Deweese.
Friday morning the large canvas concept rendering of the SMS 460 Mustang was hung and covered, ready for the unveiling. Finally,
Steve and Liz Saleen arrived after fighting through the heavy traffic into the track. Their tight schedule had them arriving directly from
their appearance at the New York Auto Show and leaving Alabama on Sunday morning to go directly from the airport to the Knott's
Berry Fabulous Fords Forever Show in California.
Friday morning, April 17, 2009 Steve Saleen addressed the crowd of fans gathered at the SMS tent. He unveiled the canvas showing
his SMS 460 Mustang and talked about his new company, SMS Supercars (smssupercars.com). The company's name represents
the initials of Steve's name, Steve Mark Saleen. Steve stated that he is continuing the same work that he's been doing for the past
twenty-five years in the auto performance business. Since leaving his former company, Saleen, Inc. in 2007 he formed the new company with a substantial core of employees that were with him at Saleen, Inc. and have joined him at SMS Supercars.
The SOEC Friday and Saturday daytime activities had SOEC members
assisting with Steve's autograph sessions and greeting Steve Saleen's
fans from all over the United States and other countries including Canada, Mexico, Australia, Germany, and Puerto Rico. Check out the photos included with this article. It is notable that members of the Puerto
Rico club have nine Saleens that are owned by club members. Steve
signed items that fans brought and each received a free autographed
SMS poster. After doing the autograph sessions at the SMS tent, Debbie Blaylock escorted Steve to the show field to autograph Saleen vehi(Continued on page 5)

make sure that all of the Saleens were autographed.
Friday evening SOEC members and friends went to Jim 'N Nick's
Bar-B-Q in Trussville for dinner with Steve, Liz, and Molly Saleen.
The group definitely had a fun time reminiscing and joking with them.
For dessert Steve was given his birthday reward, a piece of chocolate
cream pie and balloons. (Steve was 60 years old on April 2.) He ate
the pie, but left the balloons! After dinner, the troupe went to the
Trussville Play Station for relaxing go-cart racing. Well, it may not
have been so relaxing, but it sure was fun. Molly and Steve were the
targets! Everyone drove like it was a real Saleen race, but unfortunately without the horsepower.

Mustang Club), and Debbie Blaylock (President SOEC).
Saturday's dinner was again at Logan's Roadhouse. This time only
Steve and Liz Saleen accompanied the group as Molly returned to
California Saturday evening.
Steve loves to accompany our SOEC members to dinner and enjoys
meeting and getting to know his fans. He's not the typical celebrity.
If you are at an SOEC event, ask about our plans for dinner with the
group. As the events are usually out of the local territory of our officers, dinner arrangements often can't be made in advance to send
out reservation information.
Thank you to Debbie Blaylock and her family, Marilyn Peek and her
family, Doug Boring, and Rudy and Betsy Beyer for all their hard
work. Numerous other SOEC members stopped by and gave assistance. Thank you to all who helped in any way. Thank you especially to Steve Saleen for his patience with all of his autograph sessions. Meeting Steve and obtaining an autograph is a memorable
moment for the lucky fans that are able to attend a show where Steve
is appearing.

Race to Indy MCA National Show
The Race to Indy National show was held at the O'Reilly Raceway Park, but a side trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Museum was a nice side trip. The Indianapolis ‘500” Ford Mustang Pace Car was on display.

Indianapolis, Indiana is often associated with racing. The Mustang Club of Indianapolis hosted the Race to Indy National
Show on June 5-7, 2009 at the O'Reilly Raceway Park, Indianapolis, Indiana.
The O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis is a multipurpose
auto racing facility with an oval track, drag strip, and road
course. The park hosts NASCAR Bush, NHRA, SCCA, and
USAR events. It has a quarter-mile drag strip incorporated into
the long straightaway of the 2.5-mile long road course, fourstory tower, luxury suites, grandstands, and food vendors.
In addition to the judged show, activities included Drag Racing
and Auto Cross on Friday and Track Laps on Sunday. Friday
evening's hospitality included a hog roast dinner and fireworks
at the track while open test and tune night continued on the drag
strip.
Judging was done by the MCA judging staff on Saturday and the
banquet was held Saturday evening. Sunday morning some of
the show participants took laps on the oval track while the Mustangs remained on display.
The screech of tires followed by the sound of a police siren did
not mean that someone was getting a ticket! The screeching
was on the drag strip and the siren was from a retired Mustang
Police Car, one of a group that was on display.
The show booklet included "A Brief History of the Mustang Club
of America" as well as "A Brief History of the Ford Mustang".
Since this year is the 45th Anniversary of the Mustang, the history made a nice collector's booklet to save. Here are a few
notes for the uninformed reader. The Mustang was introduced
to the public on April 17, 1964 at the New York World's Fair. "It
is Ford's second oldest nameplate currently in production. The
Ford Mustang was Ford's most successful launch since the
Model A. Executive stylist John Najjar, who was a fan of the
World War II P-51 Mustang fighter plane, suggested the name."
Of interest to the Steve Saleen fans, the history also included "In
1987 Saleen Autosport Mustangs driven by Steve Saleen and
Rick Titus won the SCCA Escort Endurance SSGT Championship.”
The weekend of the MCA event was also a NHRDA (National
Hot Rod Diesel Association) event. Saturday featured diesel
sled pulls, diesel drag racing, and a diesel show & shine held on
the drag strip with the MCA Mustang Show in the huge lot behind the grandstand. A few photos of the diesel events are included with this article. In addition to looking at all of the Mustangs, show participants had a full day of NHRDA activities to
view.
With all of the activities at the track, this event truly had a variety
of things to occupy the time while everyone waited for the judging to be completed.

The All-Ford Nationals at Carlisle,
Pennsylvania has become one of
the largest Mustang events for the
Eastern United States. The date for
the event, June 5-7, 2009 was the same weekend as the Mustang Club of America National Show in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Your editor was unable to go to Carlisle, but SOEC was represented by
Dave Bruno. (Thank you, Dave.)
SOEC had a display table setup at
their booth on Saturday, as it is the
traditional day with the largest attendance. Dozens of owners stopped
by, as well as those interested in the
vehicles. Dave gave Saleen owners
a copy of SOEC poster, "TwentyFive Years of Power In The Hands
Of A Few," an original artwork which
he designed and produced as a promotional piece to be given out at
shows throughout the 2009 season.
SOEC also ran an ad in the official program to promote awareness to Saleen owners and enthusiasts. Mark your calendar for
June 4-6, 2010 for the Carlisle All-Ford Nationals.

Mustangs Northwest Roundup
Text and photos by Joe Jovanovich
The Mustangs Northwest Roundup was a fun-filled 4-day event
held on July 16-19, 2009 in the Seattle, Washington area.
Thursday featured Autocross at the Evergreen Fairgrounds.
Friday approximately 200 cars (including several Saleens)
drove the scenic 269 mile Pony Trail over the Cascade Mountains to Yakima, WA. Saturday the annual MCA Regional
Judged Show had 97 participant cars judged following MCA
judging rules. The Roundup Banquet was held Saturday evening at the Embassy Suites. (See column two for the article
about the surprise award that Steve Saleen received.)
Sunday the Peoples Choice Show was held at the Bellevue
Community College. After spending two hours signing posters,
auto parts, models, and other items, Mr. Saleen walked up and
down the rows of gleaming Saleens, spending a few minutes
with each owner(s) who stood waiting by their vehicle for the
opportunity to speak with him and have him sign their vehicle. As one might imagine, a number of vehicles bore multiple
Steve Saleen signatures, evidence that this was not the first
time some owners had been in his presence.
After signing autographs and visiting with owners, Mr. Saleen
presented awards to those that won in the Saleen categories.
SOEC was a sponsor of the Saleen class trophies at the People's Choice Show.
