MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
March is Reading Month
Blast off into
reading! I love to
celebrate our love
for reading, while
having fun with our
students. Our theme for this year is to
Blast off Into Reading. The TARGET is
to inspire and enlighten children with
their relationships with books. Through
the theme of “Blast off into Reading:
Where Eager Readers Lead”, Lawton
students will participate in activities
that spark their enthusiasm with
reading while developing leadership
skills. They will use literacy skills to
learn about our galaxy, community,
and becoming lifelong learners. We
look forward to “Blasting Off” with all
our Lawton families!
UPCOMING PTO EVENTS
be running through the galaxy. If we
beat our goal from last year of 177,000
minutes, each classroom will be able to
pick out what Commander Blick will
have to run in. The students are being
creative with their ideas! ☺
March’s Hot Read
Oh The Places You’ll Go,
by Dr. Seuss
“You have brains in your
head. You have feet in
your shoes. You can
steer yourself any
direction you choose. You're on your
own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the one who'll decide
where to go...”
This is a great Dr. Seuss story that
teaches readers that they are in
charge of their lives (Habit 1: Be
Proactive).
We are challenging each of our
students to read at least 100 minutes
per week. Each Friday, students are
asked to return a reading month tab
Our Lawton staff would like to

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL CONTINUED / THE LEADER IN ME
From soaring to high heights and seeing great sights to
being left in a Lurch on a prickle-ly perch, Dr. Seuss
addresses life’s ups and downs with his trademark
humorous verse and illustrations, while encouraging
readers to find the success that lies within.
Sincerely,
Shannon Blick, Ed. S
Habit 3- Put First Things First
What are the most import “things?”
How do we keep track and decide?
Habit 3 is Put First Things First- “I plan for the important.”
This Habit is about recognizing what is important, prioritizing
time, and organizing tasks so we don’t have to constantly be
stressed! Some kind of written planner is a great tool.
Modeling this behavior is the best way to teach it.
Ways to apply at home:
District Surveys for students and parents
During the weeks of March 21st to April 1st, our district will
be collecting your thoughts on how WE are doing. The goal
of the climate survey is to hear from ALL of our
constituents. Please consider sharing your experience with
us. Only with a complete story can we truly grow together.
The results from these surveys assist our school
improvement teams with future planning. Students in
grades 3–5 will be given time at school to complete their
survey.
Middle School Dates:
» Wednesday, March 17, 6:30pm Parent Orientation in
the Auditorium at Slauson
» Wednesday, May 4, AM, 5th Grade Visit to Slauson
M-Step – Spring Testing for Grades 3–5
Testing Window (Detail schedules will be shared by
classroom teachers at a later date)
» 5th Grade 4/11-4/29
» 4th Grade 4/25-5/13
» 3rd Grade 5/9-5/27
Our state assessment will be an online assessment that will
be completely aligned to the Common Core State
Standards (CCSS). Our AAPS administration has been
providing our staff with professional development on the
instructional shifts that are necessary to align our teaching
with the CCSS. Our Lawton staff has also been practicing
online/tech skills, as well as working on content with our
students.
If you would like to know more and practice the online/
tech skills at home, please go to the following link:
Sample Item Sets for grades 5, 8 and 11 now available at
https://wbte.drcedirect.com/MI/portals/mi/.
(Remember, Chrome only)
Priority Sort Game. Let your child pretend to be your boss.
You went golfing/skiing/to the movies. Explain why your
report wasn’t in on time. Now you be the teacher and let your
child explain how they played instead of doing their
homework. Now role-play where you each did your work and
studied before you played. Discuss the results and how it
feels when we prepare. A good point is how much more we
can enjoy our play if we aren’t worried about the things we
haven’t done.
Planning helps us succeed. Show your child what you use to
organize your time and tasks. Is it a simple “To Do” list?
Calendar? Digital Organizer? Help them create a list of things
that need to be done in the week. How can tasks be broken
down by day? Write it out. Small children can use pictures.
Older kids and teens can plan times of day for tasks and
include time for leisure activity as well.
Family Time. Nothing is more important than our families.
Set aside Family time each week. Let kids help plan the
activities. Card and board games are a great way to interact.
Go for a walk. Plan and fix a meal together. Visit the library or
zoo. Look at old family photos. Protect this time and commit
to strengthening your family. Don’t be discouraged if it
doesn’t go smoothly the first few times. Keep trying.
Words to use:
“How can we plan to make sure your (homework/chores/project) is
completed on time?”
“Our family is important and I would like to spend time with you.
What would be a good activity for us to do together?”
“Which is more important? X or Y?”
“I bet you felt really good/grown up/proud to have completed
____.”
“Thank you for putting first things first. It is so great to know I can
count on you.”
“Let’s talk about this. Did you really think ____ was the most
important thing?”
“I understand (your video game) felt very urgent, but was it really
more important than (keeping your agreement to unload the
dishwasher?)”
“How can we plan better for next time?”
For teens/older kids: “What are some things that just waste your
time? What can you do about that?”

A MESSAGE FROM THE PTO CO-PRESIDENTS
Dear Lawton Families ~
A Wonderful Community
What a fantastic week we had at Lawton this past week! Beginning with our auction
live event, where our largest fundraiser concluded, followed by the most amazing
International Faire, we cannot say enough how very proud we are to be a part of this
exceptional community.
While we are still tallying our expenses from the auction, we estimate that we raised
close to $20,000 for the school. The sense of community that we felt during the
online portion of the auction, at the live event, and all week as we met each of you
who won items was really gratifying. We cannot thank you enough for all your
support. A special thank you goes to Niki Abukusumo, Maria Laberteaux, Jane
Regan, Erin Dawe, Silke Masullo, Michelle Smith, Maureen Westfall & Britta Ullrich
for all your hours of work in getting this fundraiser organized and keeping it running
as smoothly as it did.
If you were able to attend the International Faire last week, you don’t need us to
report as to how amazing it was. The amount of work that went into this event by
students and parents alike was incredible and all your efforts showed; the costumes
were gorgeous, the performances were fantastic, the cultural displays were
informative and the food was out of this world. A huge thank you to Ying Gao and
Haripriya Mahadevan for making this happen. Your time not just this year, but in
prior years has been greatly appreciated by the entire Lawton community.
Next up, the used book fair! Please gather your gently used child or youth books,
puzzles, board games, DVDs and musical CDs. Donations will be accepted through
Monday, March 14. All proceeds benefit the Lawton Media Center.
We thank you all for all you do for Lawton!
Best regards,
MaryJo Cuppone & Sarah Schairbaum

LEOPARDS ON THE TOWN 2.0: AUCTION AND NIGHT OUT
A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the auction, whether you
donated items, browsed our site, bid on packages, purchased raffle tickets
or attended the live event. Of the nearly $20,000 that was raised, the
Lawton community sold a total of 424 raffle tickets to raise $1796 in raffle
sales. Congrats to our winners: Sarah Schairbaum (Drone) and Sharon
Patterson (American Girl Doll). Ms. Gerhart, Ms. Whitcomb and Ms.
Schroeder's names were all put in a drawing for $150 for classroom
enrichment because each of their classes sold more than 60 tickets per class.
Mrs. Schroeder won the classroom enrichment drawing. Thanks to all for
your participation!
A special shout out to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this
such a successful fundraiser: Niki Abukusumo, Maria Laberteaux, Jane
Regan, Erin Dawe, Silke Masullo, Michelle Smith, Maureen Westfall, Jenny
Silva, Brynn Crooks, Britta Ullrich, MaryJo Cuppone, Sarah Schairbaum, and
Beth Cain-Toth. This is such an amazing group of women who were willing
to jump in at any time - your talents were shining and you were incredibly
fun to work with! Cheers to you!
Please support and thank all of the donors who so generously gave to our
auction. The teachers deserve a round of applause for donating so many
teacher time packages!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Lawton Receives “Evergreen”
Status for 2nd Year in a Row!
Congratulations to Lawton Elementary for once again
accomplishing the highest level of Green Schools in
Michigan! Michigan Green Schools is a non-profit 501(c)3 agency
dedicated to assisting all Michigan schools – public and private –
achieve environmental goals which include protecting the air, land,
water and animals of our state along with world outreach through
good ecological practices and the teaching of educational
stewardship of students. To earn this acknowledgment the school
needed to fulfill a minimum of 20 green habits in the categories
listed above.
With the help of the Lawton Green Team, Garden Committee, 4th
Grade Composters, and Staff our school easily crushed this
goal! In addition to last years activities of building 2 gardens, we
have added a vermicompost pit to recycle all organic waste from
the cafeteria, created bee hotels, sponsored the local bee program
A2B2, and partnered with two Washtenaw County eco-friendly
programs: Waste Knot and Community Partners for Clean
Streams. The Waste Knot program is designed to recognize
organizations for their sound waste management practices in
three important areas: waste reduction, operation of a strong
recycling program, and use of recycled content products.
Community partners for Clean Streams is a program is to help
identify practical, cost effective ways to protect Washtenaw
County waterways through pollution prevention. Our Green Team
will be working very hard this Spring to improve the groundwater
around our Lawton play area! We should all be very proud of the
dedication our students have to create a healthier Earth!
