the august 2012 issue of the chaminade news
Challenged by Mother Nature
here were numerous doubters early on the morning of June
25, 2012 regarding the status of Chaminade’s 42nd Annual
Golf and Tennis Open – was the Open going to have to
be cancelled, or would it actually take place? Several hours
before the scheduled shot-gun starts, phone calls began coming into the
Alumni Office, as well as to the five golf courses, as thunderstorms rumbled across Long Island and ominous weather reports predicted the worst
for the rest of the day. But the rain stopped and, other than delaying the
start of golf some 45 minutes, neither the golfers nor the tennis players
were affected; even a pleasant warm sun graced part of the afternoon.
Once again, Our Lady came through for Chaminade!
This year offered a new option to golfers as The Creek in Locust Valley, NY, was added to our itinerary of golf courses (the other four were the
Mill River Club, Brookville Country Club, the Wheatley Hills Golf Club,
and the main course, Nassau Country Club). As always, cocktails and
dinner were at the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, NY. The Open
included some 475 golfers, 26 tennis players and a total of 564 for dinner.
T
Weather predictions in our nation’s capital were also very threatening on June 22,
2012, as the Washington/Baltimore Chapter held its annual wreath laying honoring
Chaminade’s Gold Star Alumni at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National
Cemetery; but it never rained. Some of those in attendance are from l.-r. above, Jim
Corrigan ’68, John Flynn ’71, Terry Meehan ’69, Chris Combs ’87, Jim Noone ’74,
Rich Fisk ’88, Marcus Weisgerber ’00, Chapter President Tom Russo ’68, Jim Reid
’68, Maj. Luke Holian, USMC ’91, Capt. Anthony Bianco, USA ’97, CHS President Bro. Thomas Cleary ’81, Matt McCabe ’87, Dev. and Alumni Dir. Bro. Richard
Hartz ’59, and Joe Schweitzer ’85. Below left, the wreath laying delegation (Bro.
Thomas, Tom Russo, Capt. Bianco and Maj. Holian) stands at attention during the
playing of taps. The CHS wreath is at right below.

year’s winners.
Highlights of the evening were the live and silent auctions which
enhanced the 2012 Torch Fund. In addition, this year a special tribute
was paid to Jack Lenz ’43; Jack was the founder of the event in 1970
and worked on the Open every year thereafter until his death on April
9, 2012. Congratulations to those who were responsible for the 2012
Open: Co-chairmen Jeff Martin ’71 and Erik Sulzbach ’92, Executive
Director Bill Basel ’58, Assistant Director Kevin Parente ’82, and all of the
members of the Golf & Tennis Open Committee. Their combined efforts
helped to make the 2012 Open a huge success grossing over $672,000
and netting a total of over $343,000 for Chaminade High School. q
120 volunteers are needed to run the Golf Open efficiently. Above right are three who
have helped in this capacity for years (l.-r.) Art Curley ’43, Larry Pinto ’43, and Bill
Sullivan CAPA. This year’s live auction was a great success due to the efforts of our three
auctioneers below (l.-r.) Chuck Mansfield ’62, Dave Gildea ’93, and Anthony Spera ’85.

It was a gala affair as members of the Class of 1987 celebrated their 25th Reunion on May 5,
2012. It began with Mass in the CHS chapel celebrated by two classmates (below left), Fr.
James Williams (l.) and Fr. Thomas Coogan (r.). The tour of the school that followed ended at the AAC with cocktails in the Conway Lobby and dinner and entertainment
in the Wrestling Room. Co-chairman Paul Annunziato (left) began the program
with a toast and MC Frank Lackner (right) kept his audience laughing. At
top left, the co-chairmen presented a generous class gift to Bro. Thomas
’81; at the time of this writing the gift was $144,400. From l.-r. are
Roger O’Donnell, Ken Coles, Mark Cirelli, Paul Annunziato,

Through hard work and dedication, Bro. Richard Hartz ’59, Director
of Development and Alumni Relations, and his staff, Deborah Kendric
(Assistant Director of Development and Alumni Relations), Bro. John
McGrory ’84 (Assistant Director of Alumni Relations), and my classmate
Kevin Parente ’82 (Assistant Director of Alumni Relations) continue to
run the Alumni Association seamlessly and adapt to the ever changing
needs of our alumni. Thank you.
Thank you Fr. James Williams ’87 and Bro. Thomas Cleary ’81, as
former and current presidents, respectively, of Chaminade, and Principal
Bro. Joseph Bellizzi ’78, for your vision and leadership. The school’s
additions and improvements during your tenure are equally impressive.
Once again, Bill Basel ’58, Executive Director of the Golf and Tennis
Open, and Kevin Parente ’82 with the help of the this year’s co-chairmen
Jeff Martin ’71 and Erik Sulzbach ’92, have performed outstanding
service in the organization and management of the Alumni Association’s
premiere event – the Chaminade Annual Golf and Tennis Open. Chaminade suffered a great loss this year with the death of Jack Lenz ’43. Jack
revitalized the Alumni Association in 1962 and ran each and every one of
the first 41 golf and tennis opens. Jack will be sorely missed. His legacy
will live on through the John R. Lenz “Semper Fidelis” Award given each
year at graduation to the student who demonstrates the greatest perseverance and dedication in the pursuit of athletic achievement and excellence.
Over the last two years, our Alumni Association has expanded. A new
chapter was formed in California. In addition to class reunions, sports
and activity reunions, the Distinguished Alumnus Award presentation,
New York City cocktail party, days of recollection, Association gatherings,
and the Torch Fund, new programs have been developed. Thanks to the
time and effort of Jim Mercadante ’79 and Chris Byczek ’66, the Alumni
Association performed a service day on May 12th at a Catholic Charities
senior housing facility in Inwood, NY. Lectures were given by our alumni
on senior topics, and an outdoor beautification consisted of planting over
60 trees, plants, and bushes to improve their courtyard.
Due to a steady increase in young alumni meeting with Development
Officer Chuck Mansfield ’62 for career guidance, Deborah Kendric and
Bro. Richard developed our first Young Alumni Professional Job Search
event on May 29, 2012. Seventy young alumni attended. Forty other
alumni participated by representing different industries and providing
skill building workshops. As a result, by the next day, two young alumni
had already gained employment. One young alumnus stated that it was
“the best event for careers that I have ever attended.” If a position needs to
be filled, whom better to hire than a Chaminade Flyer?
Welcome to Edward Smith ’89, who will serve as our new Alumni
Association President. Assisting him as Vice-Presidents will be Gus
Nuzzolese’ 76, Chris Hanley ’80, Joe Pollaci ’99 and Joe Munda ’00.
Thanks to the ingenuity, foresight and dedication of our Alumni Association, I am confident that we will continue to grow and adapt to the
ever changing needs of our alumni, and provide them with the collective
benefits of Fortes in Unitate.
Sincerely,
Daniel R. Landolphi, MD ’82
President

Introducing Alumni Association Officers for 2012 - 2013
Edward A.
Smith ’89
President
Edward A. Smith
’89 is a member of the
American Institute of
Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) and
the NYS Society of CPAs. He graduated from
the University of Notre Dame before joining
Arthur Andersen’s Audit and Business Advisory
Practice. Ed continued his career with ColgatePalmolive Company, working in Financial
Reporting and International Accounting.
In 1999, he joined Haier America, a multinational distributor of household appliances and
electronics, as Controller. He was soon promoted to VP of Finance and Chief Financial Officer
(CFO), overseeing multiple departments. Ed
played an influential role in the firm’s operations
and direction, as it grew to nearly $500 million
in sales by the time he left in November, 2007.
Ed is now CFO at Overseas Military Sales
Corporation (OMSC) in Woodbury, N.Y., the
exclusive distributor of autos and motorcycles
on all global US military bases. He possesses
skills that have bolstered OMSC’s viability despite difficult times in the competitive automotive industry. Ed is credited with negotiating
inventory financing deals, orchestrating the
relocation of the company's headquarters and
reorganizing the firm’s HR Department.
A proud Eagle Scout, Ed is a local scout
leader and serves on the Executive Board of the
Theodore Roosevelt Council of Nassau County.
He also chairs the Friends of Scouting Fundraising Campaign, and was selected by the Long
Island Business News as one of its “40 under
40” Class of 2011 and as “CFO of the Year.”
Ed lives in Farmingdale with his wife Jessica and their children: Edward, Jr. (CHS ’13),
Stephanie (KMHS ’15) and Ryan. He serves
on the Finance Committee of St. Kilian’s Parish
and Chaminade’s Alumni Board and Torch
Fund Committee, which he formerly chaired.
He was most recently elected to the Board of
Directors of the American Heart Association –
Long Island.
According to Ed, the strengths of the
Alumni Association include “its sheer numbers,
spirit of involvement and success of its constituents.” He does “not see weaknesses in the
Association, but rather, challenges, the most
significant being staying relevant in the lives of
constituents. Our alumni are all over the country and at different stages in their lives. The key
is connecting with as many alumni as possible,
as often as possible. The role of the Alumni Association is to support the school and its motto
of Fortes in Unitate, for our greatest strength
comes from unity. A strong alumni base keeps
6
Chaminade strong for generations to come. The
role of the Alumni Board is to set the events
agenda and execute plans to further enhance the
experience of being a Chaminade alumnus.”
In the next two years, Ed “would like to
make the Association more relevant to our
college-age alumni. We have taken some very
good steps in recent years and we should build
on them. We could set up a web-based program
where alumni could offer internships and mentoring to college students based on their field of
study. If college students can find value in the
powerhouse of the Chaminade network, they
would be more inclined to stay connected.”
Gus P.
Nuzzolese ’76
Vice-President
Gus P. Nuzzolese,
’76 is Senior Executive
Director of Colliers
International LI Inc.
located in Lake Success, NY. A commercial real estate broker, he

a widely circulated real estate publication. He
has received many awards, including the #1 Producer Award for successfully negotiating multimillion dollar transactions, a 2011“50 Around
50” Award and CoStar's“Power Broker” status.
A CHS honor student, Gus won eight
varsity letters and the Joseph F. Thomas Student
Athlete Award. He received a B.A. (Psychology)
with honors from Williams College in 1980 and
an additional eight varsity letters. At Williams,
Gus served as a Big Brother. He received a J.D.
from St. John’s University School of Law in
1985 with honors in Real Estate.
He and his wife, Mary, live in Port Washington, NY and have four children: Margaret,
27; Elizabeth, 25; Colleen, 23 (all Sacred Heart
Academy alumnae); and Patrick, 18 (CHS ’12),
who will attend the University of Dayton this
year.
Gus says, “One of the most wonderful
aspects of the Alumni Association is the large
number of participants, all of whom faithfully
abide by Chaminade’s motto of Fortes in Unitate through many national and local events.”
As for new opportunities, he says, “I am hoping
to create enhanced integration of technology
and communications amongst the alumni, via
easier and accessible applications by further
grouping and databasing relationships for the
betterment of society and the Torch Fund.”
On the roles of the Association and Board,
Gus sees a clear responsibility to “implement
the essence of Fortes in Unitate by creating
new ideas for generating communications and
relationships for Chaminade.” As an Association VP, he emphasizes “a continued mission of
increasing alumni participation and service and
assistance to each other and Chaminade.”
An avid golfer, the winner of the 2011
Senior Championship B Flight at North Hempstead CC and a ragtime pianist who enjoys
technology, electronics and music, he is known
for his sense of humor, strong personal relationships and analytical and negotiating skills.

Christopher
H. Hanley ’80
Vice-President
Joseph J.
Pollaci ’99
Vice-President
Christopher H.
Hanley ’80 serves
as a portfolio manager at First New York
Capital Management
in NYC, where he handles global interest rate
and foreign currency investments. Earlier, Chris
was an Executive Director at JP Morgan Chase
of Fixed Income Trading prior to his retirement
after 25 years in the Global Investment Bank.
A 1984 alumnus of Lafayette College,
Chris earned a B.A. in Economics. He lives in
Rockville Centre, NY with his wife, Tracey, and
their four children: Brendan (CHS ’09), 21, a
student at Wesleyan University; Erin, 19, at Villanova University; Sean (CHS ’12) 17, who willl
attend Union College this year; and Colin,12, at
South Side Middle School.
Chris has also been a member of the CHS
alumni board since 2005 and has served as
chairman of the annual Kick-Off Reunion since
that time and co-chaired his class’ 25th reunion.
Thanks to an outstanding job, he was recently
appointed co-head of the Alumni Association’s
Combined Reunions Committee.
“Our strengths are the diverse nature of
the industries our alumni excel in and their
commitment to Chaminade’s current students
and fellow alumni,” offered Chris. On the roles
of the Association and the Board, Chris has said,
“I believe the Association should function to
assist students and alumni in their education
about the workplace and assist and/or mentor
them in that process. The alumni board should
serve as the facilitator of that process.”
Joseph J. Pollaci
’99 serves as a Principal of Nucor Construction, a familyowned and operated
general contracting firm that specializes in office
interior and retail renovations. Prior to joining
Nucor, he worked in commercial real estate
specializing in tenant representation for NYC
and national corporate portfolios. He started his
career at a boutique firm in 2001, and in 2006,
joined The Staubach Company, which was
subsequently acquired by Jones Lang LaSalle.
Joe is a 2003 alumnus of Providence College, where he not only earned a B.S. in Business Management, but also met his wife Amy.
They live in Manhattan and have a 16-monthold son, Joseph Mark. Joe enjoys cycling, golf
and boating on Long Island’s north shore.
He says his years at Chaminade instilled in
him a strong work ethic, integrity and perseverance. He participated in various clubs and
activities, including Speech and Debate, Intramurals and General Student Organization, and
was a founding member of the Senior Leaders.
Joe joined the alumni board in 2010 as
chairman of the NYC Cocktail Party, and
considers the Alumni Association’s strengths
to include “business networking opportunities and spiritual development, as well as the
creation and enhancement of personal relationships. Also, through the Torch Fund, it directly
impacts the lives of future alumni.” Moreover,
“through Torch, the Association has a direct
impact on families by defraying the cost of
tuition.” As far as weaknesses are concerned,
“the Association needs to continue to increase
the participation of its individual members.”
The Association’s role “is to carry out the objectives and vision of the Alumni Board. As for
the Board’s role, it is to create and implement a
vision and firm objectives that enhance the lives
of all Chaminade students, alumni and faculty.”
Joe is a board member of the Chaminade
Alumni Association, a class agent for Providence
College, a board member for the Tiro a Segno
private club and chairman of the Shalom Centre
for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation
(SCCRR), a Catholic charity that is part of the
Society of African Missions.

evaluated and, wherever possible, implemented
in an effective manner.”
With respect to the roles of the Association
and Board, Joe has said, “I would describe both
