HASTINGS PARKRUN
Hastings parkrun is now firmly established, averaging a healthy 136 attendance per week
during its first 12 weeks … double the expected figure! 104 HRs have already taken part, whilst
almost as many have helped out by volunteering during this period. We need 18
marshals/volunteers each week; to see how you can help out visit
www.parkrun.org.uk/hastings and click on the VOLUNTEERS link.
Nick Brown, event director.
Over 70% of the runners taking part are non-club runners is proof that parkrun really does
attract people into running. HR highlights during the past month include:
Jenna French 5th and 1st lady (21.22); Ken Hughes 6th (21.26) …… 13th June
Hanna Hayler 2nd lady (22.29) ….. 20th June

MONDAY EVENING TRACK SESSIONS
These sessions are ideal for those wanting to improve their race times as track work will
improve your pace judgment; get you used to running hard when you are tired; and will benefit
you far more than the usual diet of steady/slow runs. Age and ability are immaterial … you can
3
all improve if you are prepared to put in some hard work, whether your target is to run a sub
35mins or sub 65mins 10kms! The whole session including warm up and warm down lasts 50
– 60 mins; during which time most runners will have only spent 15 – 20mins running
anaerobically (i.e. getting into oxygen debt). We are currently using a staggered start, with
everyone setting off at the same time but at various intervals dotted round the track. The session
closes with a 400m handicap race. Meet 18.20pm for 18.30pm prompt start at William Parker
athletics track in Parkstone Road, Hastings; parking close by in Park Avenue, off Park View.
Cost £2pp. Nick Brown

Tims’ Pickham Farm Run and BBQ 18th July 2015
On Saturday 18th July Anne and I are again pleased to be hosting the club summer 5 mile at
Pickham farm and we look forward to seeing as many as possible as we will also be making
this event a social by way of a BBQ afterwards. The main race will start at 6pm and will follow
a junior race of around 3/4 mile so how about bringing all the family along (well not all!) we
have quite a bit to see on the farm like lambs, rabbits and guinea pigs, chickens, donkeys and
horses so plenty to keep you and the children amused before we get the BBQ alight and sit
around on what is bound to be a glorious summers evening socializing ie doing what Hastings
Runners does best! There is ample parking and if anyone would like to camp overnight there
are plenty of facilities here and you are welcome to pitch up just let me know beforehand.
For those unfamiliar with these sort of do's if you can bring your own meat to cook (but I will
be cooking some of my own special BBQ lamb) and some salad or a desert maybe then we can
4
share but let me know if you can then we won’t end up with too much rabbit food and not
enough pasta!! (We can never have too much pud though!) Any q's call or text me on

Pickham Farm is down Watermill lane Pett TN35 4HX there may even be a sign up on the
day! I am looking forward to seeing some new faces as well as the olduns!

CLUB 5KMS HANDICAP RACE, Wednesday 23rd July
Last year’s race attracted a superb turnout of 75 runners, with Andy Bashford winning, Tim
Jury 2nd and the evergreen Steve Uzzell 3rd. Helen Brown was the first lady home, finishing
5th; whilst Joe Harmer posted the fastest time in 17.59; fastest lady was Riz Maslen in 20.51;
Martin Noakes made up the most places overtaking 60 runners!
The timekeepers Mary and Sue did an excellent job in trying circumstances as the handicap
system worked all too well with 60 runners (that’s 80% of the field) finishing within 100secs
of each other … a finishing rate of quicker than 1 every 2secs! This year we will have a longer
finishing funnel, and would encourage runners to move down the funnel as quickly as possible
once they’ve finished the race. This is a unique race as virtually anyone could win it, and it
offers great PB potential (given fair weather conditions) as you have the incentive of chasing
slower runners who have started ahead of you throughout the race. The course is exactly the
same as for the two club 5kms in May and November.
So how does the handicap system work? …… runners set off at staggered intervals over a
period of circa 15mins, with the slowest runners setting off ahead of the faster runners.
Estimated finishing times are based on recent race times as far as possible, with allowances
made for those runners returning from injury.
How do I enter? Email me at [email protected] to confirm your entry. Race entry
closes at 6pm on Tuesday 22nd July, and because of the complexity of working out the
handicap system THERE ARE NO ENTRIES ON THE DAY!
Race registration from 6.15pm onwards at Grosvenor Gardens, where there will be boards on
display showing your starting slot and estimated finishing time. The race starts at 7pm prompt.
As this is a club championship race you will need to wear club colours if you want to score
championship points etc. I look forward to another bumper entry! Best wishes, Nick Brown
HERSTMONCEUX RELAYS, Wednesday 5th August
Organised by Hailsham Harriers, this popular event takes place in the grounds of
Herstmonceux Castle, one of the most spectacular castles in the South East. Each team consists
of 4 runners, with each leg being 1.50 miles over an undulating course which is 50% off road
(grass and hard track) and 50% tarmac road through the castle grounds. Road shoes are fine to
wear normally; although advisable to wear trail shoes if it is/has been raining heavily.
Herstmonceux Castle is between Windmill Hill (A271) and Wartling. Post code is BN27 1RN.
25mins drive from Hastings; 15mins from Battle. Suggest taking Battle Road - Powdermill
Lane - Ninfield - Boreham Street - Wartling Road route to avoid the Bexhill Road. Registration
from 6pm onwards; race starts 7pm. Entry cost is £ 2 pp on the day. Once you arrive, please
come over to our race HQ (our car!) where you can register and pick up your race numbers.
There will also be boards showing the team selections and which leg you are running. See
www.hailsham-harriers.org.uk for full details. Please wear club vests if possible, but these are
not compulsory.
5
We had a fantastic turnout last year with the club fielding 12 teams out of a record entry of 70
teams. The men’s A team (Stuart Piper, Mark Dobbs, Leo Cacciatore and Dale Saxby) finished
7th in a top quality field with Stuart’s opening leg of 7.45 being the 6th fastest time of the
evening. The winning men’s vets A team (Ashley Varley, Scott Robertson, Martin Noakes
and Mike Beaumont) finished an excellent 10th and were 90secs ahead of favourites Hailsham.
The ladies vets team (Riz Maslen, Helen Brown, Hannah Hayler and Rosalie Uphill) finished
2nd in their category, 2mins behind a very strong Hailsham quartet. However the real drama
lay in the contest for the HR mixed team trophy which saw the first 5 teams coming in like
London buses, separated by just 34secs at the finish! A fine anchor leg by Stacey Hayler
ensured victory for her teammates Anthony Gardner, Luke Evans and Scott Parsons.
Please contact race secretary Nick Brown at [email protected]. If you would like
to take part who will arrange team selections for men’s, men’s vets, ladies, ladies vets and
mixed teams. There will be regular updates on team line-ups on FB and in Google groups.
Dordrecht 10K & Half Marathon
There is a 10k and half marathon run in our Dutch twin town of Dordrecht on November 1st.
We have been offerred free entry to the races and the possibility of being hosted with runners
although I can also recommend an inexpensive hotel.
The Dordrecht runners have always supported the hastings half marathon and we have not
reciprocated the visit for a long while. There are also events for younger runners. You can see
the details at www.drechtstedenloop.nl if you can read Dutch, or you might be able to get a
translation via Google.
There is also some video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGSWnux8aEg ,although
this tends to concentrate on the front end of the half marathon.
I am assured that these events are open to fun runners as well as the serious athletes.
It would be great if we could get a group over there again and if we do I would suggest going
over on Friday Oct 30th so that the Saturday can be spend seeing Dordrecht and then returning
after the events on Sunday November 1st.
Please contact me for further details or to register your interest either by e mail or 01424 432258
or at Tuesday evening club gatherings.

Running Stories Continued…Louise Coates
My first introduction into “running” was back in 1983 in Hameln, Germany. I was there as a teacher
for the British Force’s children. I was attending a social function where a Staff Sergeant from the
Royal Military Police Hameln Detachment, challenged us “civvies” to join him and his men for their
morning training run in readiness for their Battle Fitness Test. For some reason I ended up being
the only one that turned up, and continued to join in a couple of times a week before school. This
routine continued for a couple of months, strangely I didn’t feel any fitter for doing it. Just turned up
in shapeless tracksuit bottoms and some puma trainers……you know the ones blue suede looking
with a yellow cat that got used for squash and badminton as well! Anyway, this Staff Sergeant got
posted and the new bloke wasn’t having civvies on his runs so that was that.
However RMPs kept spotting me out and about and commented on my absence, after telling them
I was no longer welcome on their run they kept promising to take me out when not on duty. Only
one actually made arrangements to do some running and that was Richard. Not sure why we kept
on doing these runs because we didn’t do any great distance, no races to train for and at this time
of the year running in November/December after school meant it was bitterly cold, frozen puddles
everywhere or frost made it quite lethal. Eventually squash and skiing took over.
As to the BFT, can you believe it, all that training for three miles. Mile and a half as a group at a
reasonable pace then mile and a half as fast as you could but time dependant on your age.
Chicken feed now!
It was when we got posted to Londonderry (NI) that running became a bit of a hobby. It began with
a 5km Valentine’s Day charity fun run. A small group of military wives went out, ran, came home.
We didn’t keep a check on distance just increased our time, sometimes we drove the car to check
the route, all very casual! We surprised ourselves on the day so set our sights on the Londonderry
Half Marathon next. We had a few months to get ready for that. Still wearing my faithful Pumas!
Actually NI is very running orientated, 5km and 10km races could be done on Wednesday/Friday
evenings or Saturday afternoons, Sundays tended to be for Half Marathons. We collected a huge
amount of medals, and paper weights care of Kaliber the non alcoholic beer who sponsored a
summer series of races around the Province. I ran half marathons in Belfast, Lisburn and
Londonderry twice, the sub two hour always eluding me by five or six minutes.
By this time Silver Shadow trainers and brightly coloured shell suits were considered decent kit!
One 10km race I actually won first lady home, that was because I happened to be the only lady
runner. But not only that due to the lack of marshals for that race Richard and I lost our way around
Coleraine town centre and found ourselves suddenly in front of the leaders, we took refuge up a
back alley until the coast was clear and finished the race wondering if we’d been rumbled….luckily
we hadn’t !
Ironically whilst in Londonderry I did have to do the BFT to a time. Unable to get a teaching post
initially, I joined the Ulster Defence Regiment (TA of NI), and was known as a Greenfinch. As I
appeared to be quite nippy doing the BFT I was nominated to represent the Battalion on the cross
country races. Despite the wet weather I don’t remember them ever being as boggy as some of the
ESSCCL, and the marshals were always armed!
From there to Chichester and on to Hastings (mainly due to Richard…) I took myself out a few
times, did a couple of the January 10kms where Kelly Holmes a relative unknown then won the 1st
women home. Completed the Half a couple of times…. Then by chance found a running partner in
the shape of the mum of one of the pupil’s I taught. So entered a selection of 10km or 5 milers
within Kent\E Sussex. But that sub 2hours for the Half still failed to materialise.
7
Ho hum, lost my running buddy and running went on the back burner too…. Then I saw an advert
about a small running club called the Senlac Arrows was looking for new members and beginners
welcome. With mounting pressures from a new
National Curriculum it was the stress buster I needed.
2005 was a ground breaking year, my first sub 2 for a
half……1hr 58 08 done it at last. And a 4hr 34 21 for
the London Marathon, it could so easily have been a
sub 4 30 but nerves had me doing a loo stop at mile
one with world and his wife. At that point not into
wearing a Garmin, so it could be stopped and
restarted lost valuable minutes – gutted. The following
year got my Half marathon time down to 1hr 55 18.
Senlac Arrows then merged with HAC, their style of
running wasn’t for me so took time out from running
and racing.
However running with folk and racing found me
tentatively turning up at Horntye one evening and
joined the Core group. Wished I’d done it sooner, and
as they say never looked back. Except when diagnosed with Ischial tuberosity bursitis in my right
leg threatened to end my love of running. I have
learnt how to pain manage and know what suits
it best. Not a lot of flat! And off road is brill. Last
year completed Beachy Head marathon which
is pretty good after being warned in 2008 my
days of running a half were limited let alone a
full marathon.
As well as the usual collection of road races I’ve
thoroughly enjoyed the Cross Country League.
It might be bitterly cold, sometimes really boggy
and a bit wet but the apres run buffet we have
at the end is legendary.
This year we got the taste for running abroad
and in February Richard and I took part in the
Vodafone Malta half marathon, October will find
us doing the Niagra Falls half marathon with a couple of other HR and June next year booked to
take part in the San Diego Rock n Roll half marathon. Hastings Runners has much to answer to!
PS. I’ve ditched the Silver Shadows for Asics and the technical t-shirt is so much better than the
cotton baggy one ‘to cover the bum look!’ Happy days!
