Demonstrating that voices can inspire change, "Music in
Common” organized their first west coast event in Laguna
Beach last month. Music in Common is a musical model
aimed to promote peace and understanding between
the youth of different cultures and religions in hopes of
making the world a better place.
Speaking of laughs, holding the record for longest running
solo comedy show in the history of Las Vegas is Rita
Rudner who will star in her second original play at Laguna
Playhouse this January. "Act 3” Directed by husband, Martin
Bergman, stars Rita Rudner and Charles Shaughnessy ("The
Nanny”). We continue to receive inspiration from Rita's
non-stop commitment to family, creativity, and career.
In a town that is always evolving I am looking forward to
all the positive change that lies ahead this year!

On the Music Scene with Gary
We have all heard the saying, “Sex, Drugs & Rock 'n Roll!”
This is the assumed life style of a musician, but that’s
changed over the years.
For a working musician, late nights, bar food and free
Ron Pringle (aka Ron I.)
cocktails make it hard to live a healthy lifestyle. Keeping
balance in anyone's daily routine is a must in order to be at the top of your game, especially
for those performing.
I spoke with Ron Pringle, front man for the Laguna Beach based band World Anthem to get his
input on healthy living. Ron says, “Staying clean and sober, choosing wisely from the menu,
keeping away from sugars and starches, and keeping a positive attitude about life while
pushing myself physically to take action on as many fun things as I can,” are what keep him
going. At 51 years of age and fronting World Anthem (voted best live reggae
band by the OC Weekly's Reader Poll), Ron’s healthy lifestyle can be seen in
action every Thursday night at the popular Sandpiper Lounge from 10pm-1am.
Get out and support LIVE Music and the musicians who bring it to us!

Renee Bangerter Art
GALLERY GUIDE
by Liz Goldner
Renee Bangerter Art, one of
Laguna’s newest art galleries,
has gone through two
incarnations since its 2012
opening as Laguna Ink Spot
& Gallery.
Looking back, Bangerter, who
has been drawing and painting
since her early childhood, was working as a mortgage banker for decades
when the 2008 recession forced her out of a comfortable job. “I became
more introspective and wanted to explore my authentic self,” she says.
“And I realized that I am most happy when I am creating.” After four
years of planning, she opened a combination art gallery/tattoo parlor, an
unusual venue where she and the other tattoo artists could also display
their own fine art on the walls. Why did she choose Laguna? “There is
something very special about a community that has so many artists and
an art school in one place,” she explains. Early last year, Renee decided
to focus specifically on painting and ceramic sculpture, rebranding the
gallery as Renee Bangerter Art. “It gave me more flexibility to work on
my own creations and community service projects.” (She serves on the
executive committee of Laguna’s First Thursdays Art Walk and works
with the Student Mentoring Program with LCAD students.)
She shows her own ceramics as well as realistic oil paintings of Dutch
girls and ballet shoes, inspired by her favorite artist Johannes Vermeer.
She also displays paintings mostly by local artists, both emerging and
established, who work primarily in representational styles. The prices
for these often detailed and finely wrought artworks are surprisingly
affordable.

Pray for a Cure
HAPPY HOUR
Last month, an important step was taken to bring the
world a little closer to peace. Seven teenagers from the
Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith came together to
write a song to spark cultural change and promote peace.
Learning about each other's faith made them realize they
all have been victims of negative stereotyping. At the
end of an intensive two day session, a beautiful song was
written and recorded, bridges were built and seeds of
hope were planted.
Music in Common, Inc. is a nonprofit organization
whose mission is to strengthen, empower, and educate
communities through the universal language of music.
Founder, Todd Mack, began the movement 10 years ago
to honor his friend Daniel Pearl who was a journalist
executed because he was Jewish. Todd wanted to do
something that would end the hatred. The first west coast
MiC Immersion program was facilitated by local musician
and KX 93.5 DJ, Jason Feddy. Feddy’s logic is simple: Bring
people together to create something because if peace is
ever going to be achieved it needs to be a collaborative,
creative process.
Mayor Steve Dicterow spoke eloquently at the
presentation emphasizing the survival of humanity needs
to begin at the grassroots level. He said, “Bringing a
generation together to replace values of violence with
love and empathy is a great starting point to end world
violence. Programs like this allow us to think globally but
act locally.”
The kids who participated realized they had more than
just "music in common” and now know that it is possible
to create understanding. They all want to be loved,
accepted and believe there's hope for a brighter future.
The video of "Pray For a Cure” is soon to be available at:
