Jay-Z recently has
prompted her father to
release a new track in
her honour, the rather unassumingly named Glory. A celebration
of the awe and joy of new parenthood that arguably teeters on the
edge of toe-curlingness, it pays
tribute not just to his daughter but
also to his wife.
The revelation of parenthood
has, of course, inspired numerous
works through the ages: consider
Damien Hirst’s photo-realist
painting of the caesarean birth of
his son, or the photographer
Elinor Carucci’s astounding Born
project, in which she charted her
pregnancy and the birth of her
twins - or Blake’s Infant Joy, or
Sylvia Plath’s Morning Song:

John Lennon’s Beautiful Boy; or
Dylan’s Forever Young, in which
he wishes: “May you grow up to be

But there is something about
those very early songs, composed
in the glow of a newborn, that is
indisputably cockle-warming syrupy, yes, perhaps even a little
silly, but something rather
wonderful, too, as songwriters attempt to capture their
sense of wonder. Here are some of
the standouts.

Popular music’s take on parenthood is a little more slippery.
Much of this is perhaps due to
rock’n’roll’s uneasy relationship
with domesticity. Pregnancies as
told in song are often unplanned as in Bruce Springsteen’s The
Zowie), and set about writing this
Youngesque tribute to the newborn.
Later appearing on 1971’s Hunky Dory, it
is a faintly odd appeal for the child to stay
with his “kooky” parents, advice on how
to deal with bullies and people who pick
on you, as well as promises of trumpets,
cribs and throwing homework on to the
fire.

LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III - RUFUS IS A

Wainwright wrote several songs
inspired by his young children, Martha
and Rufus - who would both grow up to
be songwriters themselves. This unsettling track conveys his unresolved relationship with his new son, and the shift
in his relationship with his wife, as her
breasts suddenly seem to belong to
another male. “I envy you,” he admits,

JAY-Z - GLORY
Jay-Z’s tribute to baby Blue, born in
New York on 7 January, details an earlier
miscarriage, describes his new daughter
as “the most beautifullest thing in this
world” and samples her infant squalling.
If it appears a little dashed-off, well,
that’s surely part of its charm. It is in
essence the sound of a new father quite
delirious with happiness, rather than an
assertion of his powers as the king of hiphop.

In 1997, Hill released her solo debut
album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill;
one of the standout tracks was this tribute to her son. Zion was her first child,
and many had encouraged her not to go
through with the pregnancy, lest it affect
her blossoming success: “Everybody told
me to be smart/ Look at your career they
said/ ‘Lauryn baby, use your head’/ But
instead I chose to use my heart.” Hill
paints a moving image of strength, defiance and the intense love of a new mother: “Now the joy of my world is in Zion”.

It was the birth of Thom Yorke’s son
Noah that inspired this track from Hail to
the Thief, and Yorke has spoken of how
fatherhood has affected his songwriting encouraging him to voice his unease at
social injustice and our responsibility to
future generations. This is a rather lovely
lullaby that speculates on whether his
son might grow up to be president, “but
know right from wrong”. Alternatively, in
a nod to the child’s name, he wonders if
he might build an ark and “sail us to the

Schmaltzy, a little sickly-sweet, but still
irresistibly charming, this is almost the
blueprint for Jay-Z’s recent homage to
fatherhood. Wonder wrote this track to
mark the birth of his daughter Aisha in
1975 to then-partner Yolanda Simmons.
It opens with the baby’s early cries, ends
with the sound of her playing, and in

Ben Folds’s twins were born in the

the track Still Fighting It, in which he

Gracie, meanwhile, prompted this softer
tribute about the special relationship

PARENTING
Parental quandary: Choosing
a child’s guardian
shot at having her wishes followed, since her husband
hadn’t done the same.
I sympathise with Beckey.
My husband and I - two law
school graduates - haven’t
chosen
our
children’s
guardians. Like Beckey and
her husband, we can’t agree.
Actually, we did agree: to ask
a particular set of friends,
who said (rightly, in retrospect) no. Left with no plans,
like Beckey, I went around
the problem - before we took
our first airplane flight
together without our children, I wrote a note expressing “our” wishes and put it in
a big envelope on my desk
labeled “in case of an emergency.” I figured, hey, it’s not
like he’ll be around to say
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
ERE is the commentariat’s most
prevailing thought
on choosing your
child’s guardian when there’s
no obvious solution: blood is
thicker than, well, anything
else.
Jennifer and her husband
are brand-new parents, and
they felt stymied by the choice
they knew they needed to
make: who would be their
daughter’s guardians if something happened to them
both? Their own parents were
beloved, but not, for reasons
of health and age, long-term
possibilities. Neither of their
siblings wanted children.
That, said Laura in the most
recommended comment, is
something Jennifer should
double-check:
They should ask the siblings. Although they may not
have or want children of their
own, they might feel differently about the idea of
guardianship.
There is a big
difference
between “I
do not want
to choose to
have
and
raise biological children of
my own” and “I
do not want to raise
any children for any reason,
even if my nieces or nephews
were orphaned.” It’s worth
finding out where on that
continuum the siblings are.
But many of you voiced the
idea that as our children grow
older, we should ask them
what they would like - or at
least try to take that into consideration. Who, Mommy
Hungry’s minister asked her,
would best “companion (her)
children through what would
be a great tragedy in their
young lives?”:
That completely altered
how we looked at the situation. We do have something
in place but we constantly
reassess based on that criteria
and will likely change it
before too long, as the kids
grow older, mature, and form
their own close relationships
in our family and circle of
friends. We want someone
who can meet their needs
physically and financially
(with our savings) but also
definitely emotionally.
H
Those financial needs were
something other commenters
mentioned as well. S
Heegaard pointed out that we
need to ensure that our children won’t be a significant
financial burden, whether
that’s through an insurance
policy or a trust plan. It’s also
possible to make the custodial guardian different from
your child or children’s financial guardian.
It’s not at all surprising that
the other universal reaction,
as summed up by Taylor, was
“Ugh.” No one, and I do mean
no one, wants to think too
hard about this, and of course
thinking hard is exactly what
has
to
be
done.
SeattleLawMom pushed for
detailed planning - an estates
lawyer herself, she has two
backups to her first choice, a
clause requiring that the first
choice still be married, and
another clause insisting on
grandparent visitation rights.
“Make sure to revisit this
decision every three
years or so,” she
writes, pointing out that
you may
meet people once
your child

school who
have similar
parenting styles,
and with whom you become
close. Also, what if one of your
choices divorces? “Do you still
want ’them’ to be the
guardians, or do you only
want one of them, or neither
of them?”
Think carefully. Revisit.
Revise. Allow for the unexpected. That’s all excellent
advice.
But what I really wanted to
know, when I wrote the original post last week, was even
simpler. I think most parents
know what we should do
(although SeattleLawMom’s
advice expanded on that, at
least for me). How many of us
have done it?
Of 53 comments by readers, I counted 10 who outed
themselves as not having
resolved this issue. My personal favourite was Beckey,
who wrote, “My husband and
I could not even remotely
agree.” Beckey’s solution was
to have her own will, knowing
that it wouldn’t be binding,
but figuring that she had a
anything different.
Years later, we have four
children, and no still clear
vision of what should happen if we were to both be
killed suddenly. We know, of
course, that this is foolhardy. Forget airplanes - we
ride in a car together daily.
And yet we can’t seem to
bring ourselves to the point of
resolving our differences and
taking action. Will this post
be the impetus? Between
inertia and the “ugh” factor, I
have my doubts. I respect
Jennifer and her husband.
They’re doing the right thing.
I want to tell you I’m going to
live up to their example. But
not quite badly enough to
believe I’ll actually follow
through.

Preity requests fans not to leak Ishq In

Ranbir, Deepika patch up again?
IT looks like Ayaan Mukherjee has managed to get ex-couple
Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone back on track, and the
actors themselves seem to be comfortable with each other. The
two have gone on record to say that they are professionals and are
looking forward to working with each other. After the break-up
with Siddharth Mallya, Deepika is single again. Ranbir, however,
we hear, is busy patching up with all his exes, including Katrina
Kaif. According to a source, Deepika and Ranbir were spotted
together in Los Angeles last week. The duo flew back to India separately. There’s no doubt Ranbir and Deepika are friends again
but will this friendship turn into love again? Only time will tell.
PREITY Zinta loved being surrounded by fans on Valentine’s Day
while shooting for her debut production Ishq In Paris, but she requested them not to prematurely leak pictures taken on the sets. “Busy day
at work on Valentine’s day but we met some wonderful fans, got
tonnes of roses and had a great day at work! One humble request to
all my fans take as many photos you want but pls dont put them on
the internet as it leaks the look of the film and affects the movie negatively,” Preity posted on her Twitter page. Preity is also acting in Ishq
In Paris, an Indo-French production, directed by Prem Soni.

Acting doesn’t come easy,
feels Prateik Babbar
IANS
MAN of few words, Prateik is
a natural actor thanks to his
legacy, but the 25-year-old
says acting is such a vast subject that he can’t learn every
nuance even if he gets to spend decades in
front of the camera.
“I am enjoying it. Yes, I am comfortable, as I said I take time to open up.
Coming to terms with it, I am enjoying,”
said Prateik, the son of Raj Babbar.
With each day he learns something new,
but he feels it’s impossible to absorb the
vastness of the subject. “I don’t think I
will understand each and everything even
if I reach Amitabh Bachchan’s age. There
are so many things to learn.”
The youngster is gearing up for his first
full-fledged romantic film Ekk Deewana
Tha, the remake of a Tamil and Telugu
film, and says he was so blown away by
the southern versions that he couldn’t
refuse the offer.
“I got a call from director Gautham
Menon. He said ‘I am making a remake of
my Tamil and Telugu film and I want you
to watch those films and let me know if
you want to do it or not’. I watched the
films and I was completely blown away by
the film, story, screenplay, character and
the romance between the boy and girl. So
I immediately said ‘yes’.”
“I didn’t think too much because I was
so blown away when I came out of the
movies. I was so taken aback by the story
and the simplicity of the romance that I

wanted to be a part of the film. Gradually,
I stared working on the character.”
However, some changes were made in
the Hindi remake, keeping in mind audience sensibilities.
“The only change is the ending. Tamil
had a sad ending; Telugu had a happy
ending. This is a secret. It’s pretty much a
frame-to-frame copy, though. But I think
I had to bring in my own instincts and
pull out my own style,” he said.
Being the son of Raj Babbar, directors
expect a lot from Prateik. But the actor
says he would have given his best even if
he did not have such a legacy.
“Maybe they do, I don’t know if this is an
advantage. I don’t know whether there’s
pressure on me. I mean whether I am his
son or not I would want to give my 200 percent. I do make an effort to give my best,” he
said.
Audiences loved him in Jaane Tu...Ya
Jaane Na and Dhobi Ghat, but when he
turned up as the protagonist in My Friend
Pinto, it didn’t get the same overwhelming response and the film bombed at the
box office.
“I don’t regret the films I chose; I regret
what happened to my film My Friend
Pinto. I expected more from it, but it wasn’t marketed as much as it should have
been. I was disappointed with that.”
While speculation about Prateik’s offscreen relationship with his co-star Amy
Jackson has been making the rounds, he
clarifies saying, “We are extremely close
and fond of each other, but we are not in
a relationship.”

Sushmita Sen likes being
‘Jack of all trades’
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
ORM is temporary, class is permanent. Listen to Sushmita Sen
speak and this is the one line that
resonates in your mind.
When she quotes an aayat of the holy
Quran, one not only gets a glimpse of
how she relates to the role of motherhood, but also leaves everyone in awe
of her chaste Urdu diction.
And when she answers questions with clarity of thought
and unflinching candour,
she’s proof of the fact that
there’s a lot more to stars
than stunning looks.
When she ‘acts out’ the
vanity of stars (and she
includes herself in that
list) one cannot help
but wonder as to why
she’s gotten a rather
raw deal in B-town.
Begin to tell her
this,
when
reporters catch
up with her,
and she completes the
question for
F
us - “You’ve got looks, style, acting talent,
so how come you’ve not really made it big
in Bollywood?
With a disarming smile, she
goes on, “You wanted to
ask me this question
right?” We nod in
agreement and she
adds, “I’ve always
looked at acting as an
art. But to be ‘successful’ here in B-town you
have to eat, breathe, talk
and
live
cinema!
Everything you do
should revolve in
and around films. I
realised I couldn’t
do this. One day I’d
be excited about a
role, the next I’d
just take it as a
routine and soon
I’d find myself
being interested and
drawn to
different
things.
The

best part? I never thought I was missing
out on anything. Many would try and
allude my life to the line ‘Jack of all trades,
master of none,’ but you know what, I like
being Jack!”
Sushmita, who is known to have a lovely way with words, has also penned poetry
in the past. So, why did she not pen film
scripts (apart from Rani Laxmibai)? She
says, “I wrote for the film that I believed in
and that was Rani Laxmibai. I was so
possessed and obsessed with the subject
that during that phase all I was doing was
going to Uttar Pradesh and Madhya
Pradesh. Yes, it didn’t work out. But, har
cheez ek sahi waqt pe hi hoti hai and my
film’s time is yet to come. But, nevertheless, I am extremely proud of Rani
Laxmibai.”
Being in a glamour industry where age
matters, ironically, Sushmita welcomes an
added year to her age with excitement. So,
what’s her take on cosmetic surgery to
arrest age and she says, “Personally, I feel
I’ve earned these lines (shows the frown
lines on her forehead) and I’m happy
about it. However, 10 years down the line
I may not like them so I may remove
them! Har insaan ko apni khushi
mubarak! This urge to be in an age warp
should not be a decision you take because
sab kar rahe hai isiliye mujhe bhi
karna hai. Like any other decision
in life, you must think if
you really need it.”

OLLYWOOD actress Genelia
D’Souza, who tied the knot
with actor Riteish Deshmukh
earlier this month, says her priorities in life have changed after marriage.
The 24-year-old said she will continue doing films but her first preference
will be her husband and family.
“Life has become all the
more beautiful after marriage. I am excited to be a
part of his family. I will
continue doing films, but
now my first priority will be
my family. I haven’t decided
whether I will work only
with him, or how
many films I will
do in a year. But
I have to adjust
to many new
changes in my
life right now,”
she said.
G e n e l i a
made her first
post-marriage
public appearance in the capital city of India,
Delhi, with husband for the promotion of their
upcoming film Tere
Naal Love Ho
Gaya. The actress
said she is happy to
B
have Riteish, 33, in her life.
“Riteish is the biggest gift I have had
in my life. He is the kind of person I
have dreamt of. He respects me and his
family and I feel this is the biggest asset
in a person’s life. Dating each other for
the past eight years was an exciting
phase for me,” she said.
In Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, directed
by Manpreet Kumar, Genelia will be
seen playing a tomboy who kidnaps
Riteish to escape her impending marriage with some other guy.
“I kidnap Riteish in this film but in
real life he has kidnapped me.
We play an unlikely couple in
the film who eventually fall
in love with each other. The
film has a unique climax
that everyone will enjoy,”
she said.
Hitting theatres on
February 24, this will
be the third film
together for the
newly-wed couple
after Tujhe Mere
Kasam and Masti.
Rumour has it that
Genelia has been
ousted from the
sequel
of
Masti
(2004), but the actress
dismissed the rumours
saying, “I haven’t been
offered the film yet.”

Kim & Reggie Bush back together?
Taylor Swift goes green
SOCIALITE Kim Kardashian has reportedly rekindled her
romance with ex-beau Reggie Bush. The couple was seen
enjoying an intimate meal together on the patio area of the
Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel over the weekend. Both
of them seen smiling and joking. “Kim and Reggie had a late
brunch. They sat in the outdoor patio area for almost two
hours eating, laughing and definitely flirting. They sat toward
the back in the patio which is more intimate and private,” an
eyewitness said. The two met after being introduced by a
friend of Reggie’s at the 2007 ESPY awards. They were
together until 2009, when they parted ways.
SINGER Taylor Swift says she wants to save the planet.
The 22-year-old says working on green themed animated
movie The Lorax has inspired her to work in support of
planet. “I now do things that I never thought about before,
like the fact that if you take a bath, it’s twice as much
water as taking a shower,” showbizspy.com quoted Swift
as saying. “Things like while you’re brushing your teeth,
turn the water off, and turn out all the lights in your house;
don’t use things when you don’t need to. I think it’s important for people to have a priority on the past and the
future, not just their right now,” she added.

present her unflinching
drama about rape as a
weapon of war, In the
Land of Blood and Honey,
the Hollywood icon and humanitarian, Angelina Jolie, said her turn
behind the camera was aimed at using
cinema as a force for reconciliation.
Angelina Jolie says it was only natural that her directorial debut should
tackle some of the toughest issues facing humanity, and after wartime
Bosnia, Afghanistan is likely to be her
next subject.
Jolie said she would keep her focus
on the world’s trouble spots. “I have
been working on something that deals
with Afghanistan but I haven’t shown it
yet to anybody,” she said.
“I’ve written a lot of journals while
travelling over 10 years in the conflict
zones around the world and being
frustrated by the lack of intervention,”
said the 36-year-old Oscar-winning
actress.
“So I went to the region and started
to really look at the Bosnian war, but I
couldn’t really understand or figure it
out, and I felt that this happened to
my generation so I should know this.
So I gave myself some education.”

“I have been working
on something that

as a UN goodwill ambassador, said
her research inspired her to start writing a screenplay and her partner Brad
Pitt encouraged her to show a rough
draft to people from all sides of the
brutal 1992-1995 war.
But when it came to making the
film, she realised she was the only one
with both the objective distance and
passionate commitment to do the job.
“And this is how I found myself
being a director!” she said.
“I knew that there might have been
people who were technically more
capable than me, but I knew I really,
really cared from the bottom of my
heart so therefore I felt I should do it.”
She filmed versions of the movie in
local languages and English
in parallel.
It tells the story of a young Muslim
woman and the policeman son of a
Bosnian Serb general who had a fling
before the conflict broke out.
When they meet again, she has been
taken prisoner by a unit of the
Bosnian Serb army commanded by
her former lover.
As the women around her are gang
raped, the officer offers her protection, telling the other soldiers she is
his “property”. But the upheaval of the
relentless war means he is only able to
shield her for so long.
Jolie said the most difficult part of
filming was asking her actors, almost
all of whom come from the former
Yugoslavia and had their own bitter
memories of the war, to simulate the
savagery that tore their country
apart.
“It was very hard for everybody, for
the actors, the men who had to be the
aggressors,” said Jolie, who is in the
German capital with Pitt and their six
children.
“They were fathers, husbands and
very sweet men and they didn’t want
to do that. But they knew also they
had to do it on behalf of the women
just to show the brutality they suffered.”
She said the hardest scene to shoot
was one in which elderly women were
ordered to undress at gunpoint while
soldiers look on and laugh — an expe-

“This is one that you just never
want to ask anybody to do and you
are asking real older women to do
this,” she said.
“The whole crew was very uncomfortable but the women were so sweet
and so professional. I came to them
several times asking, ‘Are you really
OK, are you sure?’”
She said she hoped Serbs would see
the film with open minds when it is
screened in wide release this month.
“I went to Auschwitz recently and
so many names are Serb names all
along the walls because they fought
against the Nazis .. and later they
were to be the aggressors,” she
said.
“I think it’s important to study
(genocides) and to understand
them so we will really understand how to stop them.”
Bosnia’s war between its
Croat, Muslim and Serb communities claimed some
100,000 lives. Tens of thousands of people were held
in prison camps, where
torture and abuse were
commonplace.
Some
20,000 women were
raped, according to the
government’s
estimates.
Robert Dewey Hoskins
said a spokesman for
the Long Beach Police
Department (LBDP).
“Hoskins, prior to his
escape, had made comments
to hospital staff that led the Long
Beach Police Department to
believe that he may have fled to
the North Long Beach area after
his escape,” said an LBPD statement.
“This morning, officers .. saw a
male subject matching the physical description of Hoskins walking down the street. Officers
made contact with (him) and
took him into custody without
incident or injury.”
Hoskins was jailed in 1996, and
after his release was transferred
to one hospital where he was
determined to be a “mentally disturbed offender,” according to the
Los Angeles Police Department
(LAPD).
Last July, about a year after his
release from that hospital, he was
arrested again and sent to the
Metropolitan State Hospital in
Norwalk, southeast of Los
Angeles, from where he escaped
last Friday.
The LAPD launched a manhunt, and when he remained at
large by Thursday appealed to the
public to be on the lookout, warning that he was “highly psychotic
when not taking his medication
and has very violent tendencies.”
Madonna testified at Hoskins’
trial in 1996 that she had recurring nightmares since seeing the
homeless drifter near her home in
April 1995.
Her bodyguard told her
Hoskins claimed “he was there to
take me away... that I was supposed to be his wife, that if he
couldn’t have me, he was going to
slice my throat from ear to ear,”
she said.
Hoskins returned to her
Hollywood Hills estate the next
month, at a time when the singer
was in Florida, scaled the perimeter wall, jumped into her pool
before being shot twice by a guard.

Ileana hits back at producer
Jayaram in Murugadoss film
RECENTLY, producer Mohan Natarajan alleged that Ileana
D’ Cruz failed to return the advance amount (Rs 40 lakh) that she had
taken from him, since the project he had originally planned with her
was dropped. However according to the actress’s spokesperson, it had
been clearly mentioned in the agreement between Ileana and Mohan
that there was no need for the actress to pay back the advance amount
if the project failed to take off. “There is a legal clause in the contract
that Ileana doesn’t have to return the advance amount given to her.
Mohan Nadarajan is free to take legal action against Ileana. We are
ready to face it,” the spokesperson said.
JAYARAM has recently bagged a crucial role in the new
Murugadoss film. Titled Thuppaki, this action movie
will feature Jayaram with Vijay and Kajal Agarwal who
plays the lead actress in the movie. The film’s budget is
a whopping Rs 700 million. Thuppaki will have
Santhosh Sivan as the cinematographer. Jayaram, who
has impressed Tamil audiences playing the negative
roles in the recent hits like Saroja and Dhaam Dhoom,
is currently shooting for a Malayalam movie titled
Thiruvanbadi Thampan.
