On the trail of Turkey’s first
‘starchitect’
Suleymaniye
Mosque, in
Istanbul.
ANDREW FERREN
NYT SYNDICATE
HE only way to arrive at
Semsi Pasha Mosque is
by water,’’ my guide said
as our little boat dodged
two tankers on the
Bosporus. On every shore around
us, the domes and minarets of some
of Istanbul’s nearly 3,000 mosques
delineated the skyline of a city that
looks like no other.
Soon the captain made the first of
several attempts to part the row of
fishermen casting offshore. Minutes
later, amid the cries of sea gulls, we
disembarked in Uskudar on the
Asia side and stood before the 16thcentury Semsi Pasha, one of the
city’s most diminutive mosques, a
micro-version of massive temples
like the famous Blue Mosque. With
its simple stone walls and just a
whisper of stained glass in the windows, its understated interior is an
elegantly restrained evocation of
paradise on earth.
I had come to Turkey on an architectural pilgrimage. After several
recent visits to explore the country’s
supercharged contemporary art and
design scenes, I still yearned to
know more about the work of a
16th-century architect and engineer
named Sinan. He was hardly just
any architect and engineer. Sinan
(circa 1490-1588) was chief architect and civil engineer of the
Ottoman Empire, working when
the empire was at its apogee; his
employers, Sultan Suleyman the
Magnificent and his heirs, were the
most powerful men on earth.
In a career that began when he
was 40 and spanned five decades,
Sinan built some 300 structures
across Eastern Europe and the
Middle East. Since most Western
visitors to Turkey have never heard
of Sinan, guides often compare him
to his contemporary, Michelangelo.
But given the scope, scale and sheer
quantity of his buildings, that’s
something of an insult to Sinan.
Michelangelo made spectacular
contributions to a few buildings in
Rome and Florence. Sinan has hundreds of monumental structures
still in daily use, from Belgrade to
Mecca. You might say that Sinan
was the world’s first “starchitect.”
The holy grail of my pilgrimage
was in Edirne, a former capital of
the Ottoman Empire near the
T
Tiles, set in a variety of blue and green floral designs,
with panels of calligraphy in white letters on a blue field.
A worshiper prays at the Mihrimah Sultan II Mosque in
Istanbul.
Turkish border with Bulgaria and
Greece, where Sinan’s Selimiye
Mosque, with its four elegantly slender minarets, crowns the city’s centre. Sinan considered Selimiye his
masterpiece, and in 2011 Unesco
agreed with him, declaring the
entire mosque complex, known in
Turkish as a kulliye and featuring
schools, almshouses, hospitals,
baths and a covered bazaar, a World
Heritage Site.
Sinan was “the Euclid of his day,”
said Dogan Kuban, author of more
than 70 books on Islamic architecture. “At St Peter’s in Rome, your
eye is drawn to the dome itself,” he
said in a recent conversation.
“Sinan’s shallow domes, however,
with their abstract painted decoration, seem to magically float overhead. Instead of the structure, you
contemplate the space.”
To better understand what I’d be
looking at in Edirne, I asked Sea
Song Tours in Istanbul to provide
me with a three-day crash course in
Sinan. By visiting more than a
dozen of his buildings in Istanbul, I
might better understand how his
experimentation with complex geometric compositions transformed
thick stone walls into columns,
arches, domes and half-domes –
and things called spandrels and

squinches – as he made the vertical
transition from the mosques’ square
floors to their round ceilings.
My guide, the aptly named Sinan
Yalcin, brilliantly zeroed in on the
salient details of each building in
20- to 30-minute visits as we zigzagged through Istanbul, crossing
back and forth from Europe to Asia
by car and boat – 72 hours dedicated to one architectural marvel after
another.
The first stop was Sehzade
Mosque in Edirnekapi, built early in
Sinan’s career. When it was finished
in 1548, the architect recognised
that he still had something to learn.
On the mosque’s exterior lateral
walls, Sinan cleverly organised the
buttresses that support the weight
of the dome into orderly colonnades. To create symmetry, he
placed doors in the centre of those
colonnades. But inside, the doors
meant worshipers now came and
went from the middle of the room
rather than from the back. “A sacred
space meant for prayer and contemplation became a passageway,”
Sinan the guide explained. “It was a
mistake he would never repeat.”
Nearby is Sinan’s most important
mosque in Istanbul. Commissioned
by Suleyman for his own tomb and
completed in 1558, the Suleymaniye
Mosque sits atop the most prominent hill above the Golden Horn,
and remains among the most visible
monuments in the city. Sinan artfully modulated the height of the four
minarets, enhancing the illusion
that the mosque floats above the
city. Recently reopened after a
three-year restoration, the vast
complex gleams. Still, its monumentality left me a little cold.
We walked to our next stop,
Rustem Pasha Mosque, nestled in
the city’s bustling spice market,
where merchants crowd the sidewalk, and rivers of mostly female
shoppers flow through the streets.
Sinan solved the problems of this
less-than-tranquil site by raising the
entire complex above street level.
Two unassuming staircases lead to a
serene plaza floating above the hubbub, but the real treasure awaits
within, where brilliant 16th-century
Iznik tile work provides worshipers
with a garden of cobalt, turquoise
and carnelian tulips and emerald
green leaves.
The next day began at Mihrimah
Sultan II Mosque in Edirnekapi,
which was commissioned by
Suleyman’s daughter Mihrimah.
Laced with clear and stained-glass
windows, the walls of the mosque
are a marvel of 16th-century mason-
In a career that began
when he was 40 and
spanned five decades,
Sinan built some 300
structures across
Eastern Europe and
the Middle East. Since
most Western visitors
to Turkey have never
heard of Sinan, guides
often compare him to
his contemporary,
Michelangelo. But
given the scope, scale
and sheer quantity of
his buildings, that’s
something of an insult
to Sinan
ry. Sinan was said to be in love with
Mihrimah, but as she was married
to Rustem Pasha, Suleyman’s grand
vizier, he contented himself with
making the mosque as luminous as
possible to reflect her name, which
means “sun and moon.” On the
summer solstice, it is an ideal place
to watch the sun set and the moon
rise on opposite sides of the sky.
Sinan the guide was full of juicy
tidbits about life in Sinan the architect’s day. For instance, despite the
Ottomans’ highly patriarchal society, daughters like Mihrimah often
enjoyed greater wealth and longer
life than many of the sultans’ sons.
On the day a new sultan was proclaimed, his brothers would be
killed to avoid power struggles.
This latter point was made as we
admired the Selim II tombs situated
between Hagia Sofia and the Blue
Mosque, where stylised turbans
made of white cloth adorn the caskets containing the bodies of men of
the sultan’s family. Next door, the
newly restored Hurrem baths, commissioned by Suleyman’s beloved
Slavic wife Roxelana, have just
reopened.
We walked 10 minutes to Sokollu
Pasha Mosque, also famous for its
gorgeous Iznik tiles. The approach
offers a dramatic and ever-expand-
ing view of the sweeping roof that
shelters the ablutions fountain in
the foreground and the seemingly
infinite repetition of domes and
arches of the mosque itself. In the
middle of the afternoon we were the
only visitors.
From here we took the boat over
to Semsi Pasha and then walked to
the nearby Mihrimah Sultan I
Mosque (1549) also in Uskudar.
One element that Sinan tweaked
here was the double porch – the
broad overhang that covers the area
where the faithful take their shoes
off and where latecomers can kneel
in prayer protected from the elements. Dramatically widened here
to cover the ablutions fountain, the
design innovation was employed in
rural mosques all over the Middle
East.
The final day began with a threehour drive northwest from Istanbul
to Edirne, where the dome and
minarets of Sinan’s Selimiye
Mosque first come into view many
kilometres outside of town. As one
gets closer, the mosque appears as a
tautly composed jumble of shapes –
spheres, cones and cylinders –
wrapped in honey-coloured sandstone or clad in matte gray lead.
However, once past the heavy green
curtain that shelters the entrance of
virtually all mosques, the artful
complexity of the exterior’s seemingly impenetrable walls dissolves
into a tracery of stone columns and
arches embracing one vast, harmonious space.
Despite its astonishing scale – the
dome of Selimiye surpasses by a few
inches that of Istanbul’s Hagia Sofia
– no detail was too small to escape
Sinan’s attention, from the intricate
carving of the minbar, or stepped
pulpit, to the hidden relief of an
upside-down tulip carved into a column, perhaps a reference to the
landowner whose tulip farm was
appropriated to build the mosque.
After a hearty lunch, we strolled
through the sprawling Rustem
Pasha Caravanserai, part of which
is now a hotel, en route to the car.
About an hour outside of Istanbul
we stopped to admire the Sultan
Suleyman Bridge, built by Sinan in
1567 and still holding its own
against time and the industrial
skyline behind. Then as darkness
fell, we slipped back into the city
that five centuries later still
belongs to Sinan.

Ek Tha Tiger to release on August 15
No rulebook for parenting, says Abhishek
ROMANTIC-THRILLER Ek Tha Tiger starring Salman Khan
and Katrina Kaif will hit theatres on India’s Independence
Day, August 15, while its trailers will be unveiled soon. The
new trailer will be released online and can be seen on
YouTube after 12 noon and in theatres today. Directed by
Kabir Khan and produced by Aditya Chopra, the film will see
Salman-Katrina pair on silver screen after four years. Their
last film together was 2008 release Yuvvraaj.
ACTOR Abhishek Bachchan, who is married to Aishwarya Rai,
became a father in November last year. He says he is still unsure
how his life has changed after the arrival of his daughter Aaradhya.
“It is like there is another person for whom you are willing to do
anything. Your responsibilities are there, but I don’t know how life
changes,” Abhishek said. “There is no rulebook and you just do
what you feel is right. Each parent will discover things themselves,”
added the 36-year-old.

, Me Aur Main is a perfect opportunity for
me to change people’s perceptions about
me,” says Prachi Desai who will be seen
playing her age in the film. She adds that usually she has
been offered roles older than her age.
“ It is such a vivacious role. I don’t think people have normally seen me like that. The film is a perfect opportunity
for me to change people’s perceptions about me,” she said.
Directed by debutant Kapil Sharma, John will be seen
romancing five girls in I, Me Aur Main. Prachi is one of
them.
She said: “ I, Me Aur Main is a modern film. I play a girl
who is very young. She just comes into John’s life and
changes everything around him.”
The young actress started her career as the lead in TV
show Kasamh Se, feels that the industry had a set perception about her and that nobody wanted to try her for new
roles. According to her, she was always offered older
roles.
“The reason for being offered roles much older than me
was because that is the kind of role I had done on television. So, I guess, people wanted to stick to that. Nobody
wanted to experiment new roles with me. They just wanted to capitalise with what they had seen me as,” said the
actress.
The 25-year-old made her big screen debut with Rock
On! and later featured in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai,
Life Partner and recently released Teri Meri Kahaani.
Her next role is in Rohit Shetty’s Bol Bachchan.
Releasing on July 6, the film, which has Ajay Devgn and
Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles, is her first comedy
and she says she is excited about it.

blowing his own trumpet.
He says he hates the idea of

In The Amazing SpiderMan, he plays Dr Ratha, but
Irrfan has hardly spoken

them, but I don’t want to

Irrfan said he speaks only
when important.
“I definitely do publicity
for a film where I feel it is
necessary, where I am excited about it, where I feel they
need me... I go and do it. But
I would like to be in a situation, where I don’t have to
do publicity for a film and
people understand there is
something special about it
themselves. The audiences
are not fools, they can smell
films,” he said.
Some of Irrfan’s earlier
international projects have
included A Mighty Heart
and The Darjeeling Limited
and American HBO show In
Treatment.
The actor, who won praises
galore for his work in Hindi
biopic Paan Singh Tomar
about an athlete-turneddacoit, has already cautioned
fans about the length of his
role in The Amazing SpiderMan.
“I don’t have a lengthy role
in this film. I did it because it
was a experience for me. In
Hollywood, they call it as a
pivotal role because it moves
the story in some way, but I
don’t think it’s a very big
role. For me, my presence is
enough and I enjoyed it,”
said the 45-year-old.
Directed by Marc Webb,
the film also features Andrew
Garfield, Emma Stone and
Martin Sheen.
Sushmita Sen to make a
comeback soon
HE has been missing from the big
screen for over two years now but
actress Sushmita Sen says she will
be returning to movies soon.
The 36-year-old former Miss Universe
was last seen in the 2010 box office dud
No Problem and the actress says she did
not take up movies after that because she
was busy with her beauty pageant organisation, I Am She, which she started in
2010.
“Himangini Singh Yadu from our
organisation just won Miss Asia Pacific
award and so I am a bit relaxed now and
can go back to doing movies. I have
signed a few projects so by the end of this
or next year you will see me in a film,” said
Sen at an award function.
The Biwi No 1 star also talked about her
most ambitious project Jhansi Ki Rani
S
Sushmita Sen (right) with daughters Renee
(left) and Alisah
saying the film is still on hold and she will
start working on it when she has the right
budget.
“Jhansi Ki Rani is on hold. I will make
it only when I get the right budget. It’s a
story which is important to me and I will
make it when the time is right,” she
added.
Sen announced plans to produce and
direct Jhansi Ki Rani in 2007 but since
then the movie has been on hold.
The actress is a single mother and raises two adopted daughters Renee and
Alisah.
“From being a mother of two to running I Am She and my entire film production house is a daunting task... My
daughters keep me on my toes because
one is going to turn 13 and the other one
3,” Sen added.

Edible Escort Cards
No need to tart up fruit; berries
and currants are already irresistible when displayed, farmstand style, in half-pint containers.
Attach calligraphed escort cards to
wooden stirrers and stand them in
the baskets. The finished product
will do double duty as an amusebouche that also leads guests to
their tables.
Bountiful Bouquet
When designing your posy, apply
the gardener’s adage “If it grows
together, it goes together.” Carry a
sweet-as-cobbler clutch that pairs
flowering strawberries and sweet
peas with blush and white Fair
Bianca roses, starlike tweedia and
Canterbury bells. The mix of
blooms and fruit gives off a delicate fragrance that will waft down
the aisle. To complete the look,
finish it off with a fluttery silksatin ribbon.
Strawberry Fields
Forever
Fruit and flowers can outlast the
season when they’re artistically
rendered on invitations so
enchanting that guests will consider them keepsakes. Motifs
like wreaths and vines can also
be carried through to day-of
materials like menus and escort
cards.
Tiers of Joy
Cake decorating doesn’t have to be

She finishes it off with golden
raspberries, crafted from gum

the middle of the cake and sit on
top – but you could sub in any
fresh fruit that works with your
palette.
Good Charlottes
As part of the dessert spread, ask
your caterer to make charlottes:
light-as-a-cloud beauties that are
packed with Bavarian cream
mixed with pureed fruit, and
trimmed with ladyfingers. Heaped
with berries on top, this confection
will make partygoers want to dive
right in.

Sensations
Berries can also help put the
“fresh” in refreshments. Greet
guests with nonalcoholic blueberry soda, toast with golden raspberry prosecco or serve a signature

Chrysler’s new Barracuda
to be a rear wheel drive
TODD LASSA
NYT SYNDICATE
HRYSLER’S need to
find the appropriate
replacement for the
Dodge Challenger will
spawn a family of reardrive Alfa Romeos. The hottest
rumour coming out of January’s
Detroit auto show is that Chrysler
design chief Ralph Gilles is designing a new-age Barracuda to replace
the Challenger.
Challenger’s two key competitors, the Ford Mustang and
Chevrolet Camaro, are both due
for major updates in the 2015
model year. Mustang will continue on Ford’s last remaining reardrive car platform, and is widely
expected to replace its current
live rear axle with an independent rear suspension. Camaro’s
new Alpha platform is previewed
in the Cadillac ATS on sale later
this year, and on the Chevy Code
130R concept.
Using
the
Dodge
Charger/Chrysler 300’s last-generation platform, the Challenger
is by far the largest car in this
segment, at 197.7 inches long on
a 116.0-inch wheelbase that is 4.2
inches shorter than the Charger’s
wheelbase. The Challenger is that
long because it needed to mimic
the 1970-’74 Dodge Challenger’s
proportions while using the
Charger’s tall front cowl.
A Barracuda replacement
would be much more trim,
though still on a RWD platform.
Chrysler and Fiat are said to be
jointly developing a new platform that’s smaller than the current Charger/300’s LY.

less literal interpretation of its

“Ralph’s always wanted to do a
new Barracuda,” one well-placed
source tells us.
We’d bet on Chrysler badging
the Barracuda with the SRT
brand name, like the next Viper,
rather than using Dodge or resurrecting the Plymouth name.
Another source says the new
RWD platform also would serve
a lineup of Alfa Romeos, including a sports car, a coupe, and a
sport sedan, and would help
move that brand into BMW territory.
Revelations of a new RWD
Chrysler-Fiat platform represent
a huge reversal of attitude. With
help from advancements in traditional internal combustion
technology, including Chrysler’s
eight-speed automatic for longitudinal use, RWD has a future.

Rihanna’s bodyguard in
scuffle with paparazzo?
Courtney Love in legal trouble

SINGER Courtney Love is facing a lawsuit filed by her former legal
team after she failed to pay them for their services. Bosses at Keith A
Fink and Associates have accused the 47-year-old of not paying them
for their services between January and October 2009, and have filed a
legal suit. According to tmz.com, executives are seeking $466,029.41
in legal fees, as well as punitive damages, reports starpulse.com. The
attorneys claim Love sent them a slew of gifts, including flowers and
concert tickets, as compensation after her cheques bounced.
RIHANNA’S bodyguard was reportedly embroiled
in a scuffle with a photographer after he tried to
get too close to the singer. The photographer
came very close to the singer while she was in
London Sunday night only to be punched by one
of her bodyguards, according to tmz.com.
Rihanna is currently working on her new single.

HANNING Tatum is
reacting to a group of
male dancers who allege
that the actor quite literally stole their moves for
his new movie, Magic Mike,
which takes place in the shirtless
world of male dancers.
Two male dancers, Thomas
“Awesome” Austin and London
Steele, who danced with Tatum
while he was a dancer in Florida,
told TMZ that the experiences in
the film, and even Tatum’s character’s name (Magic Mike), are all
their own. Austin told the website,
“He only danced for four months.
How many events could have happened to him?” He added that even
Tatum’s move in the film, the Hot
Seat, is all his own.
Director Steven Soderbergh has
said that the film is loosely based
on Tatum’s experiences as a male
dancer. And in a new interview,
Tatum is opening up about the
claims against him.
“Those guys have been trying to
make money off of me since I got
into this business,” Tatum told
according
to The
reporters,
Hollywood
Reporter. “Look,
there’s nothing that’s factual in this
whole movie other than that I was
an 18-year-old kid and went into
this world and I dropped out of college from playing football and was
living on my sister’s couch.

There’s not one character

Tatum is
going

opening week
Magic Mike of with no ill will for
his former co-workers. “I don’t
want to say anything bad about
them because they’re part of the
reason why I think this world is so
interesting,” he said. “They’re
very interesting, intriguing and
bizarre characters, and I’m thankful for weird people out there.
They’re some of the most creative
people.”
The film also stars True Blood
actor Joe Manganiello, White
Collar star Matt Bomer and
Matthew McConaughey.
In an interview with MTV News,
Tatum recalled how the film came
out of a conversation he had with
Soderbergh. “I was having a conversation with Soderbergh and I
told him about my past ,” he said.
“I’d been doing it for eight months
of my life when I was, like, 18 or
19, and he said, ‘We gotta make a
movie out of that.’ And I was like,
‘Why? Why do we need to do
that?’ And he said, ‘I’ve never seen
that world on film before.’ And
then we really started talking about
that, and we thought it would be
really hilarious but still grounded
in reality.”

DJ Paris makes

T the Pop Music Festival in Sao Paulo,
Brazil on Saturday, electronic music
junkie Paris Hilton took to the decks
for her debut DJ appearance.
Dressed in a sexy black embellished bodysuit complete with matching gloves and
thigh-high stockings designed by The
Blondes, she started off her set with
mashups of well-known hits including
Rihanna’s We Found Love, Deadmau5’s
Some Chords and Avicii’s Levels.
“I am so happy with the way the set turned
out” the heiress said.
“It was better than I ever expected, the
crowd was going crazy and it was so much
fun to know I was creating that happiness! It
was such a rush! The energy around the
entire place was indescribable!”
Despite getting slammed for her set over
Twitter and booed during her on-stage
appearance, there’s no doubt that Hilton, 31,
learned how to spin like a pro from her
longtime friend Afrojack, a Dutch music
producer and DJ known for his hits Take
Over Control and Pitbull’s Give Me
Everything featuring Ne-Yo and Nayer.
In fact, it reported that Hilton and
Afrojack are planning to release an album of

Venalinte... renamed August Club
Saranya pens a book on dance
Debutant director K B Venu’s Venalinte Kalaneekangal has
been renamed as August Club. Confirming the news, the
director said, “We felt it created bit of a confusion. When the
title was written in English, the meaning was altered.
Though the name is poetic, we felt it didn’t communicate
well to the public. So, we decided to change,” says Venu.
“August Club is a club in the movie where the main protagonists meet. We felt it’s catchy and does connect to the
movie,” he adds. The shoot of August Club is currently in
progress at Alleppey with stars Rima Kallingal and Murali
Gopi among others.
ACTRESS Saranya Mohan didn’t have to think twice to get her
family to sit together and author a book on their favourite dance
form, Bharatanatyam. “My father and mother are both dance masters and they run a dance school in my hometown, Alleppey,” says
Saranya, adding, “Although I’m busy with films, whenever I’m
around, I make it a point to be fully active in running the school.”
Titled Natyabharathi, the book, Saranya says, talks about the
dance form in a way that even layman can relate to. “We haven’t
gone into detail; our primary aim was to ensure that the common
man would be encouraged to take an interest in the dance form,”
she states.

Spirit, a Mohanlal-starrer directed by Ranjith, explores how and why
a person falls prey to any kind of addiction and its negative impact
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
T a time when lengthy queues
in front of Bevco outlets are
being identified with God’s
own country, writer-director
Ranjith has shown a fine spirit in coming up with a movie which acts
as a mirror reflecting the Malayali’s
addiction to alcohol. Experiencing the
movie Spirit is like realising the bleakness and ugliness of alcoholism, its
hopeless trap and the value of love and
relationship that it kills.
He starts his day with a black coffee,
mixed with Cognac, and a cigarette in
his shivering hands. This is
Raghunandan (Mohanlal), the protagonist of Spirit. An eminent journalist
hosting a top-rated television show,
Raghu has an unpleasant personal life.
Father to a dumb and deaf son, the
divorcee is a chronic alcoholic dwelling
in his own world; rating himself superior to everything that surrounds him.
Still his best friends, interestingly, are
his ex-wife Meera (Kaniha) and her husband Alexy (Shankar Ramakrishnan).
But at one juncture, Raghu is forced to
think of the catastrophe of alcohol consumption and how it destroys the soul
in you. The reason for his change is
the death of Sameer, his friend, who
falls victim to alcoholism. Spirit is
not entirely free from a few typical
Ranjith hallmarks. References to

Back in the act
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
’TOWN beauty Navya Nair, a busy mother,
wife and actor is ready for her second innings
in films. Her success in Ranjith’s Nandanam
with co-star Prithviraj was certainly the icing
on the cake of her film career.
The once reigning queen of the industry, Navya Nair is
ready to bask in the limelight once again with Shyju
Anthikkad’s Scene 1: Nammude Veedu. Portraying the role
of a class XII teacher called Manju, Navya will star opposite
Lal. About her second innings she says, “I am not coming
back in an aggressive way, I liked the screenplay and story,
the movie had quite a systematic approach and so I agreed
to take it. The movie is a well-packaged one.”
Navya who has made a comeback after a sabbatical is not
worried about the success of the movie at the box office. She
says, “Usually one cannot predict the success of a movie
before its release but according to my knowledge, when the
script is good — the movie should do well.”
She is in awe of Nandanam, which earned her the Kerala
State Film Award for Best Actress in 2002. Navya who
plans to join the sets of her next film in July assures that her
comeback won’t disappoint the audience. “People won’t say
Navya shouldn’t have been back to play such a role. I have
not taken up this movie because my livelihood depends on
it — it is my passion that brought me back,” she adds.
After her family, her next priority has always been dance.
An acclaimed dancer, Navya has performed at various venues in and outside India, the latest being in
Thiruvananthapuram to the tunes of percussionist
Sivamani.
“I was very happy that I got such a huge opportunity to
perform with an international figure,” says the danseuse.
Navya’s intense love and devotion for dance is something that will always remain unchanged. A reality dance
talent show judge for kids on Asianet, post-marriage
Navya is still pursuing dance and plans to seriously do
something about it.
The beautiful lady who is looking for an opportunity to
perform with B’town stars says, “I want a dance troupe in
Mumbai, which will specialise in both fusion and contemporary dance.” For all the beautiful things happening in her
life, Navya says, “Without his support and trust nothing
would have been possible. I will always respect him.” She
has also donned the role of a writer. After her first book
Navaras, her next book is set to be a compilation with other
eminent writers.

on. If it was the life of a little boy Pauly
and his father which changed
Pranchiyettan’s life in Pranchiyettan
and the Saint, in Indian Rupee, it was
Thilakan’s Achutha Menon who taught
the protagonist Jayaprakash some valuable lessons on life.
In Spirit, it is the turn of plumber
Maniyan (Nandu) to prompt Raghu into
beginning a campaign against alcoholism. However, the characters fail to
form an emotional connect with each
other in the movie. And, in many scenes,
the flaws in the script remain hidden,
thanks to a superb performance by
Mohanlal. Other actors, including
Kaniha,
Nandu,
Shankar
Ramakrishnan, Madhu, Thilakan and
Tiny Tom, have justified their roles. The
music department is average while
Venu’s frames are in tune with the polished nature of the movie that ends up
with a voice-over: “This is Ranjith, signing off from the movie Spirit.”
However, the hopeful vision and the
positive spirit the director has shone in
making a movie with a strong social relevance need to be appreciated. That
spirit itself would qualify as a major reason to call Spirit a good movie.
Mohanlal's film Spirit
exempted from tax
ALAYALAM film Spirit starring noted actor Mohanlal,
has been exempted from tax. The film depicts various
problems and difficulties faced by tipplers.
The decision to exempt the film from tax was announced in
the Kerala assembly by Minister for Panchayats and Social
Welfare M K Muneer. “The film created an awareness on issues
faced by the society due to increase in liquor consumption,”
Muneer said.
The Minister also congratulated the film's crew including
Mohanlal and director Ranjith for presenting a value oriented
film to Malayalam film industry.
