A group of ladies enjoyed the SMCH Auxiliary’s 18th Annual
Table A Fare in September. We occupied two tables this year,
decorated and inspired by a Ladies Luncheon that is held
quarterly. Deb Jones, Deb Zenor, and Leanne Everhart did a great
job creating a ladybug theme that was fun to display and share
with everyone at the Table A Fare. In addition to the theme,
Leanne made delicious cream-filled
cupcakes topped with red frosting
and a ladybug decoration. A big
shout out to Celebrations to Go for
allowing us to borrow the lighted tree branches and
jewels that helped complete our table! Before enjoying
our salads and dessert, residents and team members
made rounds viewing other tables and looking at the
variety of décor. It was such a fantastic fall day to fellowship and visit with other
surrounding businesses and friends. We look forward to next year!

Greetings!
We recently received the results of our annual
satisfaction surveys. Thank you so much to those of
you that gave of your time to assess your level of
satisfaction with Shady Oaks, we certainly
appreciate your efforts! As you can see in the table
below, our FAMILY response rate was very low; we
really hope to get this up next time around. Any
suggestions as how to do this would be appreciated!

Autumn is officially here! We are excited to join our parent company, Vetter Health
Services, in celebrating the year 2015 with 40 years of service of elder care. Jack and
Eldora Vetter purchased their first facility in Fairbury, Nebraska forty years ago and
have expanded their dream and own 32 facilities today. In celebration of Vetter
Health Services’ accomplishments and dedication to the Mission, Vision and Values,
each facility has been asked to host a special event.
At Shady Oaks we have chosen to have a Celebrity Bake Sale to coincide with our annual Halloween Parade of
Costumes (opening our facility to the public for trick-or-treating). We will be featuring area bakery
favorites from Laritas Cakes, Community Orchard, Sweet Things, Mohrs Farm Market, The Cheesecake Lady and many more! These events will be held on Thursday, October 22.
The bake sale will start at 1:30 PM and will run through the evening during the
Halloween Parade of Costumes (set to go from 6-7pm.) The Vetter Foundation
will be matching our proceeds up to $500 to go to a non-profit of our choice.

There’s Always Time to Shop and Dine!
The September weather has been perfect for the residents at Shady
Oaks to continue their monthly adventures. In September they
planned a trip to George’s Diner and The Dollar Tree in Fort Dodge.
The residents are no strangers to George’s Diner, as they frequently
have grabbed ice cream on their way home to enjoy on the bus.
This time they decided they would stop at the “mom and pop diner”
for some of George’s delicious food. The residents and team
members enjoyed seeing George and his staff while visiting over
hamburgers and fries.
Marj Walters commented, “The food was very good and it was such
a beautiful day to be out and about.” The next stop was The Dollar
Tree. Walking around viewing all the goodies it was hard to choose
what to buy. The residents were delighted at the fact that EVERYTHING was a dollar! Helen Schaffer voiced, “I especially enjoyed
the shopping, the prices were just right and it made it fun to look at
things because it was all a dollar.”

Shady Oaks - Making Memories
From Here to There
It’s rewarding to reminisce over the adventures the Life Enrichment Team is able to provide
throughout the warm weather months. Deb Jones, Life Enrichment Coordinator, tries to coordinate two
trips a week while the Iowa weather allows. Her favorite trips are the Mystery Trips. She states, “The reaction from the residents is priceless while they are still trying to guess where they are going after boarding the Shady Oaks bus.” Deb Zenor, Life Enrichment Assistant, often announces clues and hints over
the speaker system on the bus allowing the residents to piece the mystery trip puzzle together. A mystery trip the residents and the team surely remember and loved was
Bogenrief Studios in Sutherland, Iowa. This art gallery featured
beautiful blown and fused glass art pieces. They create everything from small vases and bowls to beautiful lamp shades and
dome ceilings. Life Enrichment has provided residents with outings as close as the Lutheran Church for the monthly Lutheran
Potluck to as far as Iowa Falls, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. They
try to limit the bus drive to two hours to help with comfort levels
and always search for handicap accessible locations to accommodate everyone. A monthly favorite is grabbing ice cream and
driving around town to view city buildings and cherished neighborhoods. This always strikes conversations and memories flow from one story to the next.
The stories don’t stop there. Once the residents return to the facility it’s a different atmosphere.
Those who did not attend the outing are then excited and eager to hear about the
trip, where they went, what they ate, did they buy anything? It’s as though they are
reliving the trip all over again while sharing their view and experience.
As a facility we believe being involved in the community and providing opportunities to our residents to travel and learn fall under our mission: Dignity in Life. Not
only are the outings fun and exciting they provide a sense of personal independence we strive to achieve daily.

Celebrating National
Teddy Bear Day
National Teddy Bear Day was celebrated at Shady Oaks on September 10th.
The residents enjoyed cuddling different teddy bears and posing with the giant
teddy bear Mary Hike brought in to share. Deb Zenor started the program by
educating the crowd with a little history about the teddy bear and a display of Life Enrichment bears that
are used for activities. Deb Jones was able to contribute to the collection of bears as well Joan Schaffer
and a few residents! They enjoyed sharing stories of teddy bears they had in the past and the ones
they have kept over the years. It’s safe to say, there is something comforting about a warm, fuzzy
stuffed animal!

Busy Hands
Diversionals are an important part of our Life Enrichment programming at Shady Oaks. Our philosophy is that “keeping residents busy is EVERYBODY’s job, not just the Activities gals.” To
promote this, we have diversional kits that are
always available for our residents to use and enjoy. They are especially useful for those that prefer to sit in a place of action but need something
to keep their hands (and mind!) stimulated and
busy. In this picture, for example, Dorothy Buenting is sorting through various pieces of costume
jewelry. She was excited to show off the pieces
and said, “I enjoy looking at the different colors and especially the
shiny ones!” Team
members are able to set
a resident up with their
kit of choice, help them
get engaged with it, and
then can leave to go
about their duties. Our
kits include sensory
items such as jewelry,
lotion therapy, therapy
clay, and a color/shape
differentiation activity
to name a few. We are always looking for new
ideas and donations of items for these kits. Please
let Life Enrichment Coordinator Deb Jones know
if you are able to help us out in any way.
Happy Fall from Shady Oaks!
