TRIVIÑO [email protected] ABSTRACT The use of PowerPoint in improving the assessment scores of students in Science and other courses has been the subject of many debates in recent years. Despite this tool’s popularity, limited experiments have been conducted on its viability as a tool in Science instruction, especially in the field of early childhood education. To address this gap, this research was conducted to explore the use of PowerPoint in improving the Science assessment scores of Grade 2 students. Three class sections in the grade 2 level participated in this comparative study. During Science classes, all sections received the same topics using the following approaches: 1) the traditional method of lecture and chalkboard instruction, and 2) the traditional method with PowerPoint integration. The same sets of quizzes were administered for seven weeks after every topic was delivered. Using ANOVA and T-test to compare the quiz results during the preintervention and intervention phases, analyses showed that the mean scores were statistically different only for one-third of the participants. Further investigation through key informant interview revealed that students’ appreciate the use of PowerPoint because of the images shown in the presentations as well as the verbal support of the teacher. All in all, the data gathered did not provide conclusive evidence that PowerPoint has improved assessment scores; however, it was able to show that this tool may help in the learning, remembering, understanding, and critical thinking of the students. The results seemed to suggest that PowerPoint should supplement only the teachers’ instruction, hence, should not be used alone to influence learning and increase the academic performance of young children. More importantly, it should not be used to replace more concrete learning experiences in the early elementary years. KAMRAN GHODOOSI [email protected] Abstract Nowadays the translation of literary works for children has noticed by translators around the world; so we can observe it as an important subject because it plays a basic role in making and developing of relationships among different people with different cultures. On the other hand, the translator should not step in this area without having artifices, skills and responsibility for children future and their intellectual life. In this paper we try to do research on various related to the effects received by children from different cultures; and pay attention to different cultural symbols learned by children from translated works. We should note here that the duties of impressive factors including family, society and mediums on children's mind and culture. It is obvious that children are basic foundations and symbols of human societies and will make the society after adolescence, if they have a deep culture and right education. In theory this seems to live up to the ideals of inclusive education which is globally recognized as a guiding paradigm of the provision of compulsory education. However, contemporary education paradigm embraces learning mainly as an assessable academic progress and the need for customized learning has become a merchandise of science eligible to be harnessed by commercial vendors. The pious rhetoric and institutional, pedagogical and social school practices are thus paradoxical especially when it comes down to students’ behavior and embracing human diversity. The implicit values of the curriculum contradict the ones of inclusion: school for all is not accessible for all in terms of self-/ acceptance and self-actualization. I use Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as a case to demonstrate this fallacy between pious rhetoric and exclusive practice. I argue that school’s institutional practices convey and reproduce such sociocultural normative values and beliefs that, when internalized by students, form a potential risk for their socioemotional wellbeing. I problematize the dominant psychomedical approach to catering for student needs and, further, the whole concept and understanding of educational need which disregard student’s human needs. One of the challenges in education is cultivating social change that promotes the growth of self-accepting and self-actualizing social agents. In relation to this, I propose another way for conceptualizing need in educational practices that emphasizes the importance of social interaction. I argue for teaching empathic interactional skills as means to live up to inclusive educational paradigm. I believe school classrooms and environments need to be aesthetically designed, to trigger positive emotional attachments to educational spaces. This will allow for understanding, recall and recognition, engagement, problem solving, and communication. The classroom environment has a powerful influence on learning, and student’s perceptions of that environment can influence their behaviour. If an environment is limited in opportunities for exploration and involvement, the potential for learning is also limited. Classroom's need to be spaces that are interdisciplinary learning resources used to inspire and relate to curriculum through engaging graphics. It is necessary for all educators to understand the link between learning environment and learning experience. A student's perception of a learning environment can affect their ability to absorb information. Transforming classrooms into interdisciplinary resources for learning will provide opportunities for interactivity and promote high levels of engagement. Incorporating writable surfaces and digital displays in classroom design, will create stimulating environments. Students will be encouraged to become actively involved in the learning process as diverse experiences of all students will be brought into play during problem solving, increasing the richness of ideas explored. IDA FATIMAWATI BT ADI BADIOZAMAN [email protected] ABSTRACT Student engagement and disengagement are complex concepts. It is a process that develops over time, and patterns of student engagement may change and evolve, contingent on factors available within the learners’ ecology. This paper reports on the findings of an ongoing project conducted in a private university in Malaysia. In particular, it looks at factors which have a significant impact on student engagement at postgraduate level. Through a mixed methods approach, the quantitative findings revealed that the quality of interactions between teachers and learners in classrooms, and institutional support are significant factors in shaping student engagement. The qualitative findings affirmed this, and further highlighted how these postgraduate students’ academic engagement is significantly sustained by their own motivation and personal goals. The findings also demonstrate the need to provide a supportive educational environment in order to develop a positive foundation for student engagement. SAUD JUBAIB A ARAWAILI [email protected] ABSTRACT: The practice of many professions has been coupled with, the so-called "profession practicing license", as possessing the minimum acceptable efficiency of the profession is a necessary condition for exercising it The professionalization of any work upon clear and specific controls and standards is a factor of development, power, and attractiveness for this work, and also a factor of social respect, as the job of the individual does identify his position and role in the society. This identification depends on the post given by society to professions according to its needs. No work is to be called a profession unless it has definite controls and standards. It could be argued that the field of education needs the expert educational supervisor, who is highly professional, and this casts a big responsibility on the Ministry of Education, which selects the educational supervisor, and oversees his training. This research aims to: discuss the degree of the need for educational supervision, determine the role of the educational supervisor with the teacher in the future school, and the possibility for the application of professionalization standards on educational supervisor's work in Saudi Arabia. To achieve the objectives of the research, the researcher investigated the educational literature, and concluded an urgent need for educational supervision in terms of theoretical analysis of what is suggested in the educational literature and educational studies. Also, a list of roles which are required of the educational supervisor at the school of the future was developed. To achieve the third goal of the research, the researcher inferred set of principles that can be a runway for professionalizing the work of the educational supervisor. In conclusion, the researcher recommends, by this research, that it is necessary to prepare educational supervisor before exercising his duty in accordance with specific criteria upon which he is given a profession practicing license and develop a list of the authorities of the supervisor and functions assigned to him. RAM PRAHLAD CHOUDHARY [email protected] ABSTRACT Education is the process of installing skills, morale and political value among learners and it ultimately contributes in overall national growth and development. The paper presents a brief description on Expansion, Inclusiveness, Quality and Governance (EIQG) issues, which is also regarded as four pillars of Indian Higher Education. The expansion of Indian higher education capacity has become indispensible to include the excluded section of the society. Expansion and inclusiveness within the premises of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) with Culture of Quality attracts the requirements of proper and sufficient infrastructure. There is a large disparity in the quality of education imparted by the various higher educational institutions. Quality culture and quality gap in Indian Universities and undergraduate Colleges have been presented in this study. Quality and Governance must be the business of everybody in the Higher Educational Institutions to meet the challenges of expansion and inclusiveness. The paper also tries to suggest some measures to develop and improve the quality culture and good governance for higher educational institutions where human resources, budgets, infrastructure assets are needed to be managed efficiently. For innovation and excellence to come, continuous improvement in EIQG is highly important and from the teaching and learning point of view, its management remains a community effort. Interruptions in teaching learning process from outside are becoming reason for disruption of attendance or the dropping out of students, teachers and staff, de-motivation, distraction and dramatization of students and teachers. Thus managing EIQG is the key issue before the policymakers of higher education. The success of EIQG implementation is the ability to monitor the progress and review the objectives of our higher educational policies. As Educators, how do we respond to these notable traits? How can our delivery approach to suit Gen-Y learners be enhanced? This is a review paper with literature to support a recommended approach consisting of two basic methods; practicality and personalisation. These methods can complement each other in teaching if it is synergized with a ‘pursuit’ which can support the learning outcomes as add-ons to delivery approaches that can enhance classroom atmosphere and serve to engage students with an end goal in sight. Observations from two case studies are related offering two different perspectives of using the recommended approach and the effectiveness of this applying approach is discussed. G 065 EFFICACY OF INTEGRATING STS APPROACH IN IMPROVING STUDENTS’ CONCEPTIONS ON THE MOLE CONCEPT Louie B. Dasas1, 2, Condrad Capule1, Donn Yves Geronimo1, Dominick Ranay1, Dayanara Balanday1, Angela Bunao1, Paolo Arroyo1, Ivan Keanu Espiritu1 1 College of Education, University of Santo Tomas, Manila Philippines 2 College of Education, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City Philippines [email protected] ABSTRACT Chemistry is one of the hardest and most challenging subjects in high school and college Science (Marais & Combrinck, 2009; Passmore, Stewart, & Catier 2009; Taber, 2011). Probably one reason why students find Chemistry hard is because understanding it would mean relying on making sense out of the invisible and the untouchable Kozma & Russell, 1997). This study investigates on the efficacy of integrating Science -Technology-Society (STS) approach in improving students’ conceptions on the Mole Concept. This study is deemed significant to Science Education and its stakeholders as it aims to alleviate misconceptions of the students on the Mole Concept, which is a fundamental topic in Chemistry. An Understanding by Design (UbD) unit plan on the topic Mole Concept was developed, content validated. An intact class of Grade 9 students served as participants of the study. Mole Concept Test (MCT), and Mole Concept Checklist (MCC), Initial-Revised-Final Ideas (IRF) charts, student reflection logs, and the implementing teacher’s daily journal were means to gather pertinent quantitative and qualitative data. The results obtained suggest that there was a significant improvement on students’ conceptions on the Mole Concept as revealed by the results of the paired samples t-test, weighted mean ratings in the MCC, students’ responses in the IRF charts and reflection logs as well as the implementing teacher’s journal entries. The improvement of students’ conceptions on the Mole Concept suggests the efficacy of using the STS approach in teaching. Dasas1,2, Clarissa Te1, Luisa Ursua1, Daniel Josef Valderueda1, Marian Uy1, Anne Romo1, Gemina del Rosario1, Johanna Camille Liwanagan1, Pat Kierwin Misador1 [email protected] ABSTRACT Researches in Physics education have identified students’ attitudes and beliefs as contributors to higher gains in learning (Mistades, 2011). Educators must therefore rethink the goals for Science instruction such that both students and those who teach Science must focus on the NOS itself- rather than its facts and principles (McComas, 1998). This study investigates the efficacy of using the STS approach in teaching rotational and circular motion in enhancing SINOS and SBPaLP. Senior high school students belonging to an intact class were the participants of the study. The study utilized the following instruments to gather data pertinent to the main problem: SINOS and CLASS questionnaires, structured interviews, reflection logs, and implementing teacher’s daily journal entries. Analyses of the data gathered involved the use of the SINOS constructs adapted from Chen, et.al (2013) and Attitudes towards Science constructs adapted from Adams, et.al (2004). The results reveal that students have enhanced ideas about the nature of Science as manifested in the significant improvements in how they view the Theory-ladenness NOS and scientists. Students were also able to identify intelligence, passion, hardwork, and patience as other characteristics of scientists. Furthermore, the use of the STS approach is strongly associated with how students established real-world connections and personal interest in physics and learning physics evidenced by the students’ array of Expert-like views. The significant enhancement and improvement of SINOS and SBPaLP reveal the efficacy of using the STS approach in teaching rotational and circular motion. The Sixth All-India Educational Survey (NCERT, 1998) reports that out of India’s 200 million school-aged children (6–14 years), 20 million require special needs education. While the national average for gross enrolment in school is over 90 per cent, less than five per cent of children with disabilities are in schools. According to the EFA Global Monitoring Report 2010: reaching the marginalized, children with disabilities remain one of the main groups being widely excluded from quality education. Disability is recognized as one of the least visible yet most potent factors in educational marginalization. The United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which was entered into force in 2008, was ratified by India in October, 2008. It can be safely assumed that achieving the Education for All (EFA) targets and Millennium Development Goals will be impossible without improving access to and quality of education for children with disabilities. It is a binding on Indian government as well, being a signatory to UNCRPD. Inclusive Education for Disabled at Secondary Stage (IEDSS) was approved in India in September, 2008 to replace IEDC Scheme from 2009-10. The Scheme is 100% centrally funded. According to Barton (1997), “Inclusive education is not merely about providing access into mainstream school for pupils who have previously been excluded. It is not about closing down an unacceptable system of segregated provision and dumping those pupils in an unchanged mainstream system. Existing school systems in terms of physical factors, curriculum aspects, teaching expectations and styles, leadership roles will have to change. This is because inclusive education is about the participation of ALL children and young people and the removal of all forms of exclusionary practice”. Achieving this goal in India requires serious planning and efforts. Present Paper tries to delve deeper into the issue by exploring possibilities and challenges ahead in realizing 100% inclusive education in India. G 071 TEACHING LITERARY THEORY IN ENGLISH IN THE JAPANESE UNIVERSITY DR. BARNABY RALPH ABSTRACT Although it is certainly the case that many commentators on contemporary education have expressed concern over - or even directly argued against - the incursion of critical theory into the broader fields of the humanities, it seems to have become an accepted part of the context to the understanding of literature and culture internationally. In terms of both the theories themselves and the methodologies behind their teaching, schools of thought often vary widely in approach, however, and being able to deal effectively with the different terminologies and vocabularies can sometimes be troublesome, or intimidating even for experienced academics, so it is not surprising to realize that the majority of students frequently find critical theory, in whatever context, hard to understand. This is even more the case when a lot of the texts are in a language other than their first, and when translations frequently prove inadequate as vehicles for the conveyance of ideas. This, therefore, becomes a vital problem for teachers to address. Theory, whatever one may think of it in a broader sense, can have a lot to offer developing scholars and has been able to lead to insights that change fundamental understandings, such as orientalism as understood by Edward Said, or hybridity as explained by Homi Bhabha. In he first instance, a large amount of the long-term comprehension and engagement with theory is likely to depend on the initial approach undertaken by the teacher, as they bear the primary responsibility for deciding whether the course of study will be difficult and frightening or an intellectual pleasure that offers delights to participating students. This discussion considers a number of criticisms and offers a rationale for teaching literary theory in English at the tertiary level in Japan, along with exploring depth, breadth, and ways of approaching pedagogy. G 072 COMPUTER COMPETENCY WILL ENHANCE STATISTICAL LITERACY Rohaizah Saad & Adam Saifudin [email protected] [email protected] Aizan Yaacob [email protected] ABSTRACT Statistical literacy among society is crucial in facing era of globalization and competitive market. Hence, statistic subject becoming a core subject thought at most of the university program. However, the name of the course is varies according to needs of the program curriculum. Statistic is not an easy subject and not attractive to students. Therefore, through action research approach this study attempt to introduce computer knowledge that related to statistic through training may enhance students’ learning. Undergraduate students of course Statistic for Decision Making are involved which is stood at 57 students. As mentioned in previous literature computer competency will enhance students learning in statistic. However it was not conducted in the form of action research. Therefore, the training was conducted which is tailored to the needs of the course contents. In order to assess the students’ understanding two stages of survey was conducted before and after the training sessions. The survey questions were developed based on spreadsheet module which is related to statistic. Rasch Analysis Model under Item Respond Theory was applied in evaluating the level of understanding before and after the introduction of spreadsheet statistical function in the software to the students. Winsteps version 38.1.0 is used as a tool in analysing the data collected from the survey questions. The spreadsheet software is chosen rather than other software because of its popularity among the practitioners and also easily available and easy to learn. The result shows that students’ computer competency are improved after the training sessions. During the training session students are very curious and enthusiastic to learn about the statistical function that can help them to understand statistic. Their competency has reflected in their statistic assignment where the quality of assignment has improved. Sincerity and creativity in teaching may help students’ enhance their knowledge as well as skills. Western culture is influenced by the intellectual movement of the Enlightenment, which served to enforce an ontological division between `self` and `other`; Enlightenment culture represented Western progress positively whilst conferring an inferior status on the rest of the world. Cultural demarcation between `civilized self` and `savage other` meant that other parts of the world were judged by Europeans to be in need of the West`s guidance, and explorers such as Stanley used these beliefs to justify the need for colonial expansion. Yet while the Romantic counter enlightenment, with its emphasis on Burke`s sublime, astonishment and horror, caused partial paralysis of these rational faculties, it also served to further accentuate the colonialist notion of the non-West as mysterious terra incognita awaiting discovery. Romanticism provided a sensory threshold, or liminality, whereby it could represent other parts of the world through the creative power of the human imagination, whilst also being bound by the liminal nature of this intermediate condition. In specific relation to The Middle East and Asia, Romantic writers such as Wordsworth, Coleridge and de Quincy contributed to a colonialist tradition of depicting the Orient as an exotic and inscrutable place of adventure that later writers such as Saki, Twain, Hearn, and Orwell continued to perpetuate. This genre tradition of writing has in turn influenced modern travel guides, which further convey the promise of adventure that draws backpackers and travelers to the poorer parts of the word on ‘gap’ year travels. Such an adventure seeking attitude towards the `other` may implicitly influence the motivation of many Westerners working abroad as English teachers, while Western created stereotypical representations of `self` and `other` also pervade contemporary ELT materials. Therefore, of specific interest to this paper is discussing the interconnected relationship and tension between enlightened depiction of `self` and romantic perception of the `other`, and its remnants in the pedagogic materials and political and economic practices of the English language teaching industry. G 083 THE IMPACT OF DYNAMIC PROTOTYPE ON USABILITY TESTING AND USER SATISFACTION: FIDELITY AND IN-SITU PROTOTYPING Ashraf Mousa Saleh & Dr. Roesnita Binti Ismail [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT Nowadays mobile device is one of most used recent technology being used by different types of user’s profiles. Despite of this, there is still lack of knowledge on how users of mobile application actually interact with the these application because few studies conducted on usability of mobile application User Interface(UI), thus it is considered as an interesting research areas. But how much can a mobile application simplify our daily events, before it itself becomes a usability load? What are the capabilities and limitations of using mobile application with different prototyping techniques (low and high fidelity) and task complexities of the interaction items? In the context of design, iterative prototyping can be considered as the process of receiving feedback by end users for facilitating the iterative design of a system. Usually, an iterative user interface design process initiates with the production of low-fidelity prototypes and continues with higher-fidelity prototypes. In this paper we will study the impact of prototype of mobile application and complexity of task for the usability test and user satisfaction. This study will discuss the effect of mixed prototype design on usability testing, lead to affect on mobile application development industry by integrating the fidelity with In-siut model. The expected results will show how that new suggested technique for prototyping (Mixed-In-situ prototype) has significantly effects usability level than paper type prototype and there is a significant interaction between prototype and complexity. Eventually, with assigned complex task for user of mobile application by using computer prototype expected to gain highest rate while paper (Low) type prototype with simple task gained lowest usability levels which generally will affect and have directs impact on user satisfaction. In the 21st century, learning to think should be central purpose of education. The best learners do not memorize random bits and pieces of information. On one hand, the literature posits that learning should be problem or question-based (Paul & Elder, 2006). On the other hand, interest in developing and teaching thinking skills among students, especially at the tertiary level, have been explicitly expressed by the government as well as the private sectors since the last few decades. This has been clearly stated in the National Education Policy, as well as in the mission and vision statements of all the institutions of higher learning in the country. At the level of secondary education, it is stated that the policy should place more emphasis on critical and creative thinking skills (Ministry of Education Malaysia, 2005). Schools should produce students who are able to think, act, and handle situations or problems intelligently, and this is possible only if their thinking and problem solving skills are developed (Rosnani & Suhailah, 2009). With a special reference to Islamic Model of Thinking, teachers would be able to create the best method on their teaching. This study aims at describing a model for improving students’ thinking in learning Islamic education. It also aims to explore how this model fulfils our responsibility as teachers of Islamic education and its contributions social and intellectual spheres of learners’ personality. It will also discover on the importance of thinking in Islam and the positive impacts of their life in maintaining peace in society. The outcome of this study will assist Muslim teachers to carry out their responsibility in a better way which is expected to correspond with the Islamic worldview. G 105 RESOURCE-BASED LEARNING (RBL) STRATEGY TO IMPROVE INFORMATION LITERACY IN GENERAL SCIENCE OF FRESHMEN SECONDARY STUDENTS GENEVAIVE OLMILLA MELENDRES [email protected] ABSTRACT Resource-based learning (RBL) strategy conceptualizes learning as a process which takes into consideration the importance of resources available to learners. Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and use it effectively. RBL is intended at improving learners’ information literacy skills. This study aimed to test RBL as an effective tool in enhancing the extent of information literacy in General Science of Freshmen Secondary students of the University of the Immaculate Conception, Bajada, Davao City. In this experimental study, the pre-test post -test randomized group design was used. The instruments used were group performance and peer assessment checklists, group performance rubric, and a 60-item multiple-choice type of test made by the researcher. Data showed that there was no significant difference in the post-test results of the control and experimental groups. Meanwhile, a significant difference in the pre-test and post-test result of the control group was found which was consistent with the evaluation of their developed information literacy skills done by the teacher. The outcome also indicated that majority of the students in the experimental group developed various information literacy skills as indicated in their peer assessment and group evaluation. RBL did not enhance information literacy of first year students but it allowed for development of skills such as helping, listening, persuading, questioning, sharing, and respecting. It also supported the constructivist theory of learning. It will serve well as a component of teacher-directed instruction. G 109 LANAO DEL SUR PILGRIMS’ PERCEPTIONS OF PHILIPPINE HAJJ MANAGEMENT 2010-2012: BASIS FOR AN INTERVENTION PROGRAM Dr. LABIMOMBAO A. DIMA-MACABANDO [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT For the Hajj, all roads lead to the Holy Land of Makkah. The Hajj is both iconic and symbolic. It symbolizes the unity and solidarity of the Muslim world, as well as the ideal of equality; it is a time when all differences, divisions, and distinctions disappear, and human or man-made barriers collapse. Universal brotherhood or fraternal solidarity reign as people of different colors and castes, speaking different languages, and of various political beliefs, come from different parts of the world, to join the annual assembly in Makkah and perform one of the pillars of Islam. One is filled with awe on seeing millions of Muslims dressed in two white sheets of cloth gathered at Arafat to complete the Hajj ritual. The enforcement of the ideal of Muslim brotherhood is one of the quintessential concepts of Hajj; it is the greatest social ideal of the Islamic faith. This unity which is based on one God – Allah (s.w.t.), one Book – the Holy Qur’an – one Qiblah, the Kaabah – and one leader, the Prophet Mohammad (s.a.w.) transcends all other forms of unity based on territory, geographical boundary, linguistic and ethnic affinity. The mission of the Prophet (s.a.w.) was to unify and cement the Ummah under the banner of La ilah illa Allah Muhammad Rasulullah (Haque, 1999). And this mission is seen fulfilled during the Hajj. The researcher hopes and prays that this research work will be put to good use and that the Muslim Filipinos can benefit from it not only for this year, or next year, but for the generations to come including her children, grandchildren, and the forthcoming generations as well. Some parents are concerned on the effects of video games on their children’s behaviour especially with the rising case of moral problems among youth. The authors believe to resolve this requires laying the foundation at a very young age, thus a research was conducted on how video games can aid Moral Education subject in kindergarten school level. This study focuses on teachers and students from four different kindergartens in Labuan, Malaysia. The objective of this study is to research whether video games can be used as an aid to instil positive moral values towards children during their study in kindergarten. During the research, a prototype for an educational game was produced by using data from the Moral Education subject based on KEMAS’ (Community Development Department) kindergarten education syllabus. This research takes on four kindergartens under KEMAS in Labuan. This study utilises the Action Case research methodology with application of qualitative case method. All the research methods use already approved and supported by KEMAS organization. The researchers propose a two part methodology. First is pre-fieldwork, where the researchers interview the teachers and observe the class session during Moral Education subject to attain data needed to produce the video game. The second part was post-fieldwork, when the researchers interview the teachers and observe the children’s behaviour after playing the video game. The overall result from this research shows that video games are applicable as an aid to instil moral values towards the children and the teachers support the idea of using video games as a teaching aid. The researchers hope that this research will be useful for kindergarten teachers and also the local video games industry. G 113 COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND CONDUCT IN CLASS AS PERCEIVED BY STUDENTS TOWARDS EFFECTIVE TEACHING SABARUDIN ZAKARIA, NORHANIM DEWA [email protected] ABSTRACT The goal of teaching is to improve student learning by maximizing opportunities of learning and understanding in every lesson. In many cases lecturers fail to transfer knowledge to students effectively despite having sound technical knowledge in the subject area. The existence of knowledge stimulates the context of real life scenarios and real world experiences that assist understanding of theories (Heffernan et al., 2003). Teaching as a process of communicating and imparting basic knowledge as well as skills in a formal or informal situation bring about a change in behaviour (Osakwe, 2009). Teaching is an interactive process between the instructor and the learners via the process of communication that directs learning activities. This paper attempts to identify students’ view and perception of teachers based on two teaching characteristics - teacher’s communication skills and conduct in class. A survey is distributed to students that enrolled in an undergraduate business related program of two private higher learning institutions. The results affirm that conduct in class as well as communication skills are perceived by students as the characteristics required in an effective teachers. Keywords: conduct in class, communication skills, effective teaching, academic performance, students’ perception G 114 AN EVALUATION OF CULTURAL DIVERSITY PROBLEMS IN MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT BECOMES GRADUALLY ACTIVE EDUCATIONAL MODEL WITH THE GLOBALIZATION İbrahim AYGÜN Turkish Air War College Abstract The borders between the countries are disappeared with the ever-evolving technology and transportation convenience by airplanes thus the world became a global village metophorically. In this global village people in different nations stick to each other very deeply in every aspect of life such as transportation, education, business, entartaintment and industry. This situation has very positive effects on everybody however it includes some problems in itself. Different acts in every culture might be percieved differently. As an example; speaking aloud in Kenya is percieved as an offensive action yet in France it can be seen as a normal way of expressing yourself. Another example; in American culture it is important to be a goodhomoured man/woman in a meeting whereas in Russian culture it could be perceived as frivolity. It is inevitable that if the students who are grown in his/her own country get education in another country would face this type of problems. In this point the teachers should have responsibility in order to solve the problems that their students face with. In this article author tries to evaluate the problems which the students might confront with in order to get education in a different culture or country and tries to make suggestions about how to solve this kind of problems. A dual system, spiritual and material approaches, were incidentally employed, each of which is an enemy to the other. The two systems have different approach to education and made unrelated provisions towards the development of mankind. The focus of Islamic education was on integrating individuals who are masters in their specializations and are equipped with fundamental values of Islam. Thus, the real purpose of man as an ‘abd’ (worshipper) and his natural role as Allah’s vicegerent (khalifatullah) on earth can be achieved. The newly imported system falls short as it focuses on physical wellbeing and the temporal life achievement, these systems has negatively impacted the individuals, family and the entire communal life. As such the Islamic education faces chronic challenges from different dimensions resulting from the amalgamation. This also created it continues collapse unconditionally. The paper will purposely describe the clear concept of Islamic education, its philosophy and the Western system. The paper will analyse the chronic nature and numerous implication of educational dualism on social and educational well-beings in both countries. The paper will also suggest recommendations to strategize efforts for the reformation of contents, methods and curriculum so as to plan for the real integrative system with balance policies. Dasas1, 2 [email protected] ABSTRACT Learners of today significantly differ from the past generations in terms of communication, clothes, preferences, styles, etc. (Prensky, 2001). Different brandings such as N-gen or D-gen have been given to the 21st century generation because of their attitudes towards using technology not just as a means but as a necessity. Educators are challenged to look for means to utilize technology in the classroom. It is found that student engagement in the learning process can be achieved through technology tools and resources (Kezema, 2011; Laru, 2012). This study explores on the effectiveness of using web-based tools in improving student conceptions in Biology specifically in the topic Life Energy and Processes. An intact class of First Year college students taking up a General Biology course served as the participants of this study. The participants were engaged to utilize readily available, free web-based tools as means of understanding the topics presented in class. Online web-based tools are used as means to reinforce understanding from class discussions. Results of the pre-test and post-test as well as the Life Energy and Processes Concepts Checklist are compared to find out how students conceptions on the topic compare before and after exposure to web-based tools. In addition, reflection papers and structured interviews are used to provide qualitative descriptions pertaining to change in student conceptions pertinent to the topic on Life Energy and Processes. Results of this study are deemed significant in understanding better the role of technology in the academe. Schools and Students in present classrooms are facing tremendous range of challenges due to significant changes of social-economic and cultural background & according their developmental stages. To overcome these problems through schools and to enhance the personality development of students, school counseling has been introduced in Sri Lankan school system since 1960s. To enhance the current school counseling service in a productive way, perception of students, teachers and principals are more important as key stakeholders. Main objectives of this research were to identify students perception on school counseling service, find out problems faced by students when receiving this service and what kind of service student prefer to have from school counseling service. Methodologically the researcher worked with four schools in the district of Anuradhapura to gather raw data. 100 students were taken as the sample. A survey design was employed as the major research approach. Semi structured questionnaire and interview schedule was engaged to collect data as instruments. Majority of the students (73%) have recognized counseling service as a method of giving advices by senior teacher/teachers appointed as counselors. As a main problem 65% do not have much confidence about School Counselor especially with individual counseling. For that reason 52% do not satisfy about the current counseling services in their schools and about the place that use as counseling room. Most of the students prefer to have professional guidance, Educational Counselling and individual counseling for their personal problems with confidential counselor. Therefore this research recommended enhancing the awareness on school counseling among stakeholders to overcome these misconceptions. Moreover it can be suggested to provide a better training for school counselors and to establish a good monitoring system and also sufficient facilities should be provided to the counseling service in school level. Key words: perception, school counseling G 129 INEXPERIENCE STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION, DIFFICULTIES AND CHALLENGES TOWARDS IMPLEMENTATION OF LAB-BASED INQUIRY APPROACH: A CASE STUDY IN BHUTAN Tshering Nidup & Supan Yodyingyong* [email protected] ABSTRACT An Inquiry approach has been widely recognized as effective instructional method in science education and, lab-based inquiry is well acknowledged in chemistry education. Many researchers in this field raised some issues like identifying aspects of inquiries that results in more fruitful outcome; need of more research on students’ performance towards teacher-designed inquiry – based instruction; opinions of students on lab based inquiry, and relationship between students’ lab experience and learning. Implementation of lab-based inquiry has resulted in wide range of students’ experience in laboratory activity in secondary schools. However the experience of students in laboratory work is restricted to ones’ learning environment like curriculum, syllabus, school culture, resources, skills, and time beside other issues. Therefore, the current study looks into the perception, challenges and difficulties faced by students who have no experience or little experience of inquiry based laboratory activities. A case study included 43 students from one of the secondary schools in Bhutan. The teacher designed lab-based inquiry of two lessons on the concept of colloids to understand the effect of size of particles in solution was implemented. The data collected from questionnaires, semi-structured interview and student reflections indicated positive perception towards the approach; satisfaction and confidence, enjoy working in groups, active participation, and positive look towards probing questions and in building teacher-student relationship. However factors like management of time, slow process, handling of laboratory apparatus and its uses (test tubes, measuring cylinder, burette, conical flask, etc..,) observation skills, fear of chemical and fragility of glass apparatus were some of many difficulties and challenges faced by the students. The study suggest the need of students’ knowledge and experience in use and handling of laboratory apparatus and, observation skills are important for implementation of such approach to remedy the shortcoming of time and efficiency. Issues to overcome problems are discussed. Keywords: Inquiry, Inquiry Lab, Lab-Based Inquiry, Laboratory Apparatus, Colloids, Particle Size G 130 A HANDS-ON PHYSICAL MODEL FOR TEACHING QUANTUM NUMBERS AND RULES FOR WRITING ELECTRON CONFIGURATION Jampel Choda & Pirom Chenprakhon [email protected] ABSTRACT Quantum numbers describe the distribution of electron(s) around the nucleus of the atom. The information of quantum numbers can help to understand the rules and principles of writing electron configuration (arrangement of electrons). Learning in this topic has been found difficult for student to learn as the content in this topic is abstract. Literatures report that students face learning difficulties and confusion when relating quantum numbers to energy level and electron configuration. Literatures also report that students learn these concepts and processes mainly through use of analogies and mnemonic technique to memorize and remember rather than fostering students’ conceptual understanding and internalizing the process. As a remedy for these problems, a hands-on physical model has been developed to facilitate students’ conceptual understanding of quantum numbers and understand the meaning and application of principles and rules for writing electron configuration. The model is made from foam board, bamboo stick and plastic beads which are cheap and readily available. Model has a promising scope for students and teachers in the field of chemistry to use in the class for teaching and learning of various concepts such as relationship between four quantum numbers, variation of energy levels in the atomic orbitals, valence electron, atomic radius, Hund’s rule, Pauli Exclusion Principle and Aufbau principle. Besides, addressing wide range of concepts, model also provides teachers a flexible approach as teachers may resort to use this for demonstration purpose or as a hands-on activity for students to construct their own knowledge in an entertaining way. Therefore, this paper presents the detail description of the construction of the model and how to use it in the real classroom setting. Key words: hands-on physical model, quantum numbers, electron configuration. G 131 TEACHER’S DIARY AS AN AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT MEDIA FOR STUDENT AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (STUDY CASE AT SCHOOL OF NATURAL BENGAWAN SOLO) Anafi Nur ’Aini 1, Mega Permata Hadisaputri 2, and Meita Arsita 3 [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT The changing of national curriculum from KTSP to K13 caused changes the way in assessment, from cognitive that focused in the result became authentic assessment (affective, psychomotor, and cognitive) that focused on process until got the result. But, there are still many obstacles in the implementation of K13. Many teachers have difficulty in understanding this authentic assessment. SABS Elementary School (School of Natural Solo) located at Bengawan Solo riverbank, Gondangsari village, Juwiring, Klaten, Central Java . It has been implementing the authentic assessment and has been using diary book as assessment media. Teachers observe and then record each student activities in a diary to determine student progress in terms of affective, psychomotor and cognitive. But the implementation of diary has not well structured. There is not clear guidelines for writing and there are differences form inter the teacher. Based on these problems, the authors are interested to having research about how the implementation of diary as assessment media of learning in the School of Natural Solo through qualitative research using case studies method. The purpose of this paper is develop writing guidance and the structure of diary book so it can be implemented in elementary schools in Indonesia to demands of authentic assessment in the curriculum 2013. Play is strongly featured in most of the discussions about creativity in young children. Hence, it was noted through direct observation that most preschool teachers are not concerned with promoting play to develop the child’s creativity. Therefore, this study attempts to investigate how the teachers use play, for the development of creativity in the preschool environment. The survey method was used as the research design and interviews, observations and document perusal were used as data collection methods. The sample consisted of 20 preschools from selected administrative divisions in the Colombo district. It was revealed that a majority of preschool teachers used folk games as a means of involving children in play. Teachers assume that this type of guided play will motivate the child learn new words, memorization and provide enjoyment. Eighty per cent of the preschool teachers used the play equipment installed in the preschool premises to encourage children to get involved in activities calculated at promoting the physical development of the child. In 40% of the preschools visited it was noticed that when children were given their break they created their own forms of free play and enjoyed themselves thoroughly in the little time available to them. Also, about 20% of preschool teachers promoted imaginative play with their preschoolers. There was also the situation where the role of play was interpreted negatively by the teachers who assigned the children to copy letters and numerals during the time assigned for play. This has a negative impact on the child’s creativity. In conclusion, it was felt that the teachers do not make the best use of the opportunity available to use the child’s enthusiasm to stimulate creative actions in him/her and that there is no suitable environment to develop creativity through play. G 149 LANGUAGE AND GENDER: FEAR OF EVALUATION IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING Mahfuzah Rafek, Nur Hani Laily Ramli, Nurul Ain Hasni [email protected] ABSTRACT In Malaysian classroom context, language learning is usually perceived as ordinary and less troublesome when it comes to first language (Bahasa Malaysia). Nevertheless, one has to agree that complaints are frequently voiced regarding second language learning (English). The most prominent detectable problem is viewed during evaluation in class where students are struggling to perform due to fear. Banks (2008) has portrayed that fear-if left unattended- will eventually hamper the learning process. Apart from that, it has been proven that female and male perceive fear differently (Wicks-Nelson & Israel, 2006). Hence, it is necessary to further investigate the severity of the problem. This study is conducted to identify students' perceptions of Fear of Evaluation as well as to determine the level of fear (also known as anxiety) for different gender. The instrument used is a set of questionnaire adapted from the measurement scale called FLCAS (Foreign Language Class Anxiety Scale) which was introduced by Horwitz (1983). A total number of 56 university students are involved in this study. Field of Research: Evaluation, Fear, Language Learning, Gender, Students G 153 AN INTEGRAL ASIE INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN MODEL: AN INTEGRATED APPROACHED IN INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING FOR THE 21ST CENTURY LEARNING & TEACHING ENVIRONMENT Ismail Md. Zain, Ph.D [email protected] Associate Professor Balakrishnan Muniandy, Ph.D [email protected] Wahid Hashim [email protected] Abstract Instructional design is the main key to the formulation on instructional planning. Its play an important role in education as it has an impact on the learning and teaching process. In the era of 21 st century learning, students must have varieties of skills in order to be globally competitive for success in today’s world as well as to face the issue of employability. Thus, teachers need to equip themselves with an extensive pedagogical, technological and content knowledge (TPACK) effectively in their instructional planning (Mishra, P., & Koehler, M.J., 2006). An Integral ASIE Instructional Design Model (Ismail Zain, Balakrishnan, M., 2014) is developed as alternative solution to the above challenges and requirements for schools and institutions of higher learning. It is an acronym for Analyze, Strategize, Implement and Evaluate. It is interactive to the user, integrative in planning the content, prescriptive in the planning procedures and constructive in the organization of the components. An Integral ASIE ID Model has a planning mechanism known as Multiple Integration Worksheet (MIW). This unique features guide instructors/ teachers in the process of formulating & integrating the best possible practices in the instructional planning strategies. Workshops have been conducted for teachers to develop in-depth understanding of ASIE model. The indication of the effectiveness is represented by the percentage of respondents’ frequencies to the five-level Likert scale. Keywords: Instructional design, ASIE Model, instructional planning, Multiple Integration Worksheet (MIW) G 156 THE CHALLENGES THAT VISUALLY-IMPAIRED STUDENTS AT SULTAQN QABOOS UNIVERSITY FACE IN LEARNING ENGLISH Maryam Said AL Ghafri Sultan Qaboos University [email protected] ABSTRACT English language learning is essential for the visually-impaired population to be better integrated into society. G 196 ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE ON INFORMAL LOGICAL FALLACIES WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ARGUMENTUM AD HOMINEM Dr. MOHAMMAD MANZOOR MALIK [email protected] ABSTRACT The fallacy of argumentum ad hominem is valid in Islamic tradition only when historical reports and narrations are investigated. Therefore, its validity is restricted to transmitted knowledge (uloom naqliah). As far as rational or intellectual knowledge (uloom aqliyah) and empirical knowledge (uloom tajribiyah) are concerned argumentum ad hominem is invalid. In short, the fallacy of Argumentum ad Hominem is regarded in Islamic tradition only when historical reports and narrations are rejected because of the unreliability and known vices of a person as being a liar, untrustworthy, having a sectarian bias, and dishonest. As far as the understanding of religion is concerned, this fallacy also does not affect in accepting or respecting the opinion as far as the opinion is backed by good evidences and arguments. In the same manner if a reliable person gives account on any subject his evidences also are in need of verification. Being pious does not guarantee soundness of an argument. However, the followers of religion should follow pious scholars regarding the opinions on religious matters as a caution they are not mislead. But after scrutiny, this condition only applies to those who do not have enough capacity to understand and think or weight the worth of any argument or opinion. For those, who are able and have intellectual capacity and can understand the issues of religion, this condition does not apply. Regarding rational and empirical knowledge, Muslims are encouraged to learn from everyone regardless of their faith and character. Therefore, this fallacy does not apply to any discourse from Islamic perspective that is actually based on accepted evidences, data, and methods. Key words: logic, fallacies, critical thinking, Islam, argumentum ad hominem. G 197 HIGH SCHOOL GPA AS PREDICTOR OF SUCCESS OF 2014 BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION GRADUATES OF ST. G 205 ICT APPLICATION COMPETENCY OF TEACHERS IN ASIA: A STUDY TO UNDERSTAND THE LEVEL OF ICT APPLICATION SKILLS AND SELF CONFIDENCE AMONG SCHOOL TEACHERS MAHDHY SHAHID [email protected] ABSTRACT In the present arena, it is not only the devices that contribute to ICT but the whole infrastructure that enhances the ICT outputs. Use of modern ICT devices and further need to increase the facility and expertise in schools of Asia is urgent, as implementation of the modern devices, can only keep Asian schools in the same track as schools of other developed regions. The intention of the study is to understand the level to which Asian school teachers are equipped with ICT application skills and their self confidence in the use of ICT. The study highlights the concern for the level of ICT application by school teachers in Asia. The study reveals that the respondents have got minimum 1-5 years of teaching experience and some have got experience in teaching up to 20 years (figure 4). Yet the application level of ICT is very low. Hence, this indicates adequate ICT training is not being provided by the schools. The study reveals that the application skills of ICT among Asian school teachers is less compared to the level of training they have received and compared to the positive attitude they have towards ICT (figure 6). [email protected] ABSTRACT Does using highly illustrative pedagogical practice, with the use of computer and related technologies help to motivate students’ learning? This is what we would like to find out thru this study that we hope to be able to present in your forum. Computer and related technologies, or what is termed as Computer Based Instruction (CBI) to our mind is one way in which we could help motivate students to learn and actually practice what they have been taught inside the four walls of the classroom. Students should be able to fully grow as human beings, and one way is for them to be able to develop their minds through effective learning, but this can only be possible if they are truly motivated to learn. This is what Computer Based Instruction can do for them. According to Keller’s ARCS motivational model in pedagogical practice, CBI can “intrinsically” motivate students by drawing their attention while encouraging them to apply relevantly what they have learned in class. Students also develop a sense of confidence and satisfaction as they learn through CBI. A survey of Saint Dominic College of Asia, Philippines students was conducted, and results of the survey did show that majority of the students preferred CBI as an approach to teaching and learning, which has been confirmed in the hypothesis of this study. G 199 HUMAN DEVELOPMENT THROUGH HIGHLY MOTIVATED LEARNING: EMPLOYING CBI IN THE CASE OF SDCA COLLEGE STUDENTS Dr. Jesucito M. Garcia, Dr. Noel A. Sergio, Prof. Agripino P. Licauco, Jr. Prof. Angelito T. Buan, Prof. Marvin B. Camila ABSTRACT This study intends to investigate whether or not using highly illustrative pedagogical practice, through the use of computer and related technologies can indeed motivate students to learn and put into practice what they are taught inside the classroom. For students to grow fully as human persons, they should develop their minds through effective learning. Effective learning however is possible only if students are truly motivated to learn. Computer based instruction (CBI) can help in motivating students to learn and even put into practice what they are taught in class. Following Keller’s ARCS motivational model in pedagogical practice, CBI is said to ‘intrinsically’ motivate students by drawing their attention while encouraging them to relevantly apply what they learn in class.
