NEW IT UPGRADE
ALLOWS FOR ONLINE
REGISTRATION AND
ROSTER SUBMISSIONS!!
Beginning in 2009, FAS will reveal the second phase of our web development
program. We launched our new website earlier this year and now phase two is
about ready to begin. Upgrades are being implemented daily to provide for a contemporary, user-friendly, and secure system for FAS to operate its program.
For the first time, managers will submit applications and rosters using the newly
developed online system. Every manager will register with FAS using their own
unique username and password login information. FAS staff will be available to
help managers who do not have computer access or who aren’t confident with
pursuing the task solo.
What’s New? Managers will now submit their applications and league fees for
each season online. Rosters will be entered once into the system and submitted.
After entering your roster information for your first team, you will be able to access
the same information for future submissions, saving both time and the effort of reentering data. Applications, rosters and roster changes will be made online and
approved online. No more worries of making sure you have the approved copies
of rosters or roster change forms with you. Payment options for both application
and roster submissions will include secure credit card online payments from Visa,
MasterCard, and Discover Card, or options to mail/drop off payment in the form of
cash or check. Enhanced communication options will be available; managers can
access team contact information for all teams within their managed divisions and
call or email them directly. This will help in coordinating with your opponents on
rescheduled games or notification of your inability to field a team. Because your
roster is secure, and only viewable by you upon secured login, you can email your
team members right from our online system. FAS will be able to send email notices out to all managers, assistant managers, and approved players, with the latest events and promotional opportunities.
We are very excited to provide our members with the best possible softball program, and making it easier to join and meet the required submission is our goal.
We look forward to your feedback as you begin a new era with FAS.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR
COMES TO AN END
By John Carney
As 2008 comes to an end, I reflect back on another successful year for Fairfax Adult Softball (FAS). I am thrilled
to announce the many accomplishments our program achieved this year!
Despite the decline in our economy, team participation was comparable to that of 2007. We also managed to stay
within our conservative budget for 2008. On an extremely positive note, FAS is very pleased to announce that
league fees will not increase for the 2009 season! FAS continues to place its investments in very traditional and
guaranteed funds in order to maintain a solid and sound organization.
Once again, our playing season contained excellent competition and outstanding conduct throughout. The program had its lowest number of protests and behavior issues in recent history. This is in tribute to all of our participants in keeping the game in perspective. In addition, the FAS umpires performed at a very high level in 2008
where the annual average annual was 8.2 out of 10. Great job this year to every umpire for your performance and
to each participant for your displays of sportsmanship!
FAS continues to maintain a great dialogue with the Fairfax County Park Authority and the Department of Recreation and Community Services. It is our goal that our communications will result in improved field conditions and
enhancements, and the acquisition of additional facilities to accommodate our growth in the corporate coed program. We thank all participants who helped ensure the passage of the Park Authority bond placed on this past
November’s election ballot. As a result, the Park Authority has committed funds to improve lighting at both fields
at Lake Fairfax Park and at the softball field at Poplar Tree Park. Both of these facilities were in dire need of improved lighting, and we appreciate the Park Authority’s commitment to provide a safe environment for our softball
games.
I am very pleased with the progress of DeBellas Solutions and FAS staff in the development of the new FAS database program. The work is on target and on budget. This has been a major undertaking and is currently scheduled to have two key parts completed by the beginning of the 2009 season.
The FAS Board of Directors just completed the annual officer elections for the executive committee and is pleased
to announce that Scott Semmler was re-elected to the office of 2nd Vice President. We are equally pleased that
Joe Morice was elected to the position of Secretary. Congratulations to them both. We are excited to bring both
their enthusiasm and dedication to our program.
I would like to thank the current members of the board for the hard work, dedication and devotion, and for their
leadership and commitment they contribute to make FAS an outstanding program. I would also like to thank
Sharon and Christine for all of their hard work, commitment, passion and devotion in ensuring that the program
and office run smoothly each and every day.
A sincere thank you goes out to my fellow members of the Executive Committee for your continued support and
hard work. A special thanks to Tica O'Brien, who, after years of dedication and devotion to our program, retires
from the Executive Committee. Tica you will be missed; thank you for your years of belief and devotion in this program.
An important date to remember is our 9th Annual Special Olympics Bowling Tournament to be held on January
25th, 2009. Everyone is encouraged to participate in this benefit and if you might please consider making a contribution, we would be most grateful. The benefit will be held at the Bowl America Shirley Center in Alexandria. All
proceeds will be donated to the Northern Virginia Special Olympics and FAS field improvements.
I would like to extend my warmest wishes for a very, happy holiday, and a healthy and prosperous New Year to all
of you and your families!!!

What’s The Call?
By Sharon Sealock
Play: Bases loaded and no outs. The batter (B4) hits a line drive which hits R1 who is standing in fair territory and on third base. The third baseman is playing behind the third base bag.
Ruling: In slowpitch softball, very rarely are the defensive players positioned in front of the bases. Therefore, since the closest defensive player is behind the base, the umpire should immediately call “dead ball”.
Batter B4 is awarded first base, and any runners forced to advance because the batter was placed on first
base, shall advance one base. In this case, all runners advance one base where R1, the runner hit by the
line drive, scores safely.
Note: If in the rare case in slowpitch softball, the third baseman had been playing in front of the bag, perhaps
in this case playing for the force out at home plate, then a different call would have been made by the umpire.
The ball remains live and play continues without interruption by the umpire. If, however, in the umpire’s judgment, R1, who was struck by the live ball line drive, requires immediate attention, the umpire should call time
and allow treatment. If runners are on base when time is called, runners are awarded the bases that the umpire judges they would have reach if time out had not been called.
Play: Bottom of the first inning. The visiting team is in the field when the coach notices that batter 11 (B11),
a male, is playing defense. B11 is not an eligible player because the team only has 10 total players and only
5 total females. The coach removes B11 from the defense and enters B5 into the defense. In the bottom of
the second inning, B11 prepares to lead off the inning at bat because a sixth female has arrived allowing the
team to now bat and play 6 male players. The defense protests the illegal re-entry of B11.
Ruling: B11 was an illegal player in the first inning, a player who takes a position in the line-up, either on offense or defense, who does not have a legal right to the position. Rule 4, Section 6, requires any infraction of
an illegal player to be governed by the unreported substitute rule. In this case, the offending team informed
the umpire prior to a protest by the offended team of the illegal player and the effect is no violation regardless
of how long the player was in the game, and all action stands.
FAS TO REVIEW ITS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Each January, FAS reviews its Policies and Procedures Manual, which is used by staff, officers, board
members, league coordinators, and committee chairs to ensure the smooth and skillful operation of the
FAS program.
Scott Semmler, 2nd Vice President (Rules), has scheduled his annual review
meeting and welcomes comments and suggestions from all interested parties.
This year’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 21st at 6:00 p.m. at the
FAS office. The manual is available on the FAS website under “rules.”
Please make sure all input is received before the 21st. Email remarks to
[email protected] or call the FAS office at 703-815-9007 and your input will be forwarded to him.

Thank you to my friends...
As I reflect on the past several weeks following the passing of my
mother, I am astounded by the friendships, thoughtfulness and caring
that the softball community has bestowed upon my family in this time
of grief. It is with sincerity that I, on behalf of all of the Sharbaugh family, extend a heartfelt thanks to each and every one who has shown us that it is not just all about
softball but of a caring community. From the outpouring of e-mails, cards, and donations to the
Catholic Charities, the ASPCA, the Cancer Society and the meals prepared for my family, I appreciate all the consideration, time and money invested. I am proud to have met so many good people
through the FAS society and again THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for all the love, caring and concern.

Umpires Celebrated
By Jason Yovich
Fairfax Adult Softball held its annual umpire banquet on November 13th at Brion’s Grille in Fairfax to celebrate another successful year and honor our top performers on the field. Making the decisions for the end of the season awards was a very
difficult process. FAS has many umpires that have continually demonstrated their commitment to being the best umpire
they can be. In addition, I was thoroughly impressed by the camaraderie our umpires demonstrated on the fields by helping and supporting each other.
Our 2008 Umpire of the Year is David Sowell. David has over 12,000 games under his belt officiating tournament play in
the Richmond area and many national tournaments. His many years of experience enabled FAS to assign him games in
our top leagues from the beginning of the year and he shined all year long. In umpiring these higher division games (which
we all know can be an umpire’s toughest critics when rating umpires), he averaged an 8.7 out of 10 in 283 games. Very
impressive, David! We look forward to having you back for the 2009 season and beyond. Congratulations!
Our 2008 Rookie of the Year is Larry Anderson. Larry stood out in our 2008 rookie class. He umpired 284 games while
averaging an 8.1 out of 10 rating over the entire year. What is not shown in those numbers is the fact that Larry made himself available whenever FAS needed him to cover games that were not covered because another umpire had an emergency and could not cover their assigned games. His flexibility and willingness to help the continuity of our program is not
something that we taught or made a requirement. But, he held himself to a higher standard and we very much appreciate
his performance on and off the field. Congratulations Larry!
We also wanted to recognize some other umpires for their high performance during the 2008 season. Ed Celinski, the
2007 Umpire of the Year; Andy Perkins, the 2007 Rookie of the Year; Mike Wade, Nancy Peterson, Fred Smith, and
George Hersey. These are just a few of the umpires we have in FAS that we appreciate having in our program and we all
enjoy seeing them umpiring our games when we get to the fields. Congratulations to all of our umpires for a successful
2008 season!

Freddie Force Bats Their Way To Victory
By Brian Kelly
Game one pitted Freddie Force against Wayne's World in Bracket B. It was, in fact, party time....for our bats! We
came out swinging and put up a large, crooked number in the first inning and maintained the lead to earn the win. Everyone hit well, Rachel Rybicki was fantastic as our pitcher, and we played good team defense. Though the sun presented a
challenge to both teams defensively, Mike Nachmias, Ryan Reese, Marcus Rheinberger, Alli Roth, and Leigh Yakima led a
strong defensive effort from our outfield. LaShawn Elston, Miho Anderson, Clayton Davis, Walter Kong, Rennie Eaton,
and Brian Kelly provided solid infield defense in support of Rachel's fine pitching.
As our second opponent was disqualified from the tournament, we then had a one game winner take all with PWC
after a two-hour break. Mike Nachmias served as captain for the coin flip, and won home team advantage for us. With
our staff ace, Donny Scholl, feeling a bit under the weather, we called on Walter Kong to take the mound.
After taking the early lead, 4-2, PWC responded in the top of the third with four runs, to gain a 6-4 advantage. After tying the game in the bottom of the third, we then held PWC scoreless in their next at bat. Runs were at a premium, as
good pitching and defense prevailed for both teams.
In the bottom of the fifth, with two on, Walter crushed an inside-the-park homer to right field to give us a 9-6 lead.
PWC then inched their way back with a run in the sixth. Good pitching and defense kept the damage to just one run as
PWC closed the gap to 9-7. Three outs away from the championship, the Force were determined to close the deal. PWC
scored a run early in the top of the 7th and to close the deficit to one run. With an opportunity to tie the game with a hit, or
go ahead with a home run with only one out and a runner on base, would PWC seize this opportunity and make the bottom
of the 7th relevant? Walter got the next hitter to pop out to the outfield; no base runners advanced. PWC was now down
to their last out. The PWC hitter got settled in the batters box, and awaited Walter's delivery of the next pitch.
The batter swung, and hit a pop fly to short that was caught to end a competitive game between two CC01 rivals,
and earn Freddie Force the tournament championship. Congratulations to all teams who competed in the tournament, and
to my teammates on a successful culmination of an undefeated fall season.

Once Upon a Time …
By Ab Samoy and Lisa Perez
Once upon a time and still very much happening now, there exists a merry bunch of men and maidens that partake in
the lively game of softball. Their history of triumphant ventures and tournaments are a-plenty and can only be versed by the onfield historian doubling as the LCF. Their vocal ringleader speaks in the foulest of tongues and is known quite fondly as Pantalones. Yet it is a maiden who leads this bunch…as Robin Hood was to his merry men…Lisa leads her Scrubs.
So here now is a tale of their latest adventures. Saturday, October 18th was another brisk, Fall day at Braddock Park
and as our division rivals Softball Tech and triple-S were in our tournament bracket, it was sure to be an interesting day as well.
The tournament was a Round Robin format with five teams in the bracket, so we knew who we would face and when. All we
had to do was win four games.

Big Hits In Late Innings Give Seoul
Bros. Victory
By Walter Kong
This year’s Fall Tournament will definitely be one to remember
for the Seoul Bros. The Seoul Bros played some outstanding softball
throughout the day, which allowed them to avoid the losers’ bracket.
With clutch hitting from the entire team, and crafty pitching from Walter
Kong, Barry Kelley, and Jeremy Flythe, the Seoul Bros were able to
win their first three games of the tournament and advance to the championship game. The Seoul Bros faced the Yellow Jackets, Hurtings,
and Germane Systems winning 27-6, 23-5, and 21-15 respectively.
Germane Systems, who also had a strong tournament showing, came out on top of the loser’s bracket to advance to the championship game in a rematch with the Seoul Bros. This time around, Germane Systems scored early and often. After a 16-run 4th inning, Germane Systems held a comfortable lead of 37-14. Undeterred by the
score, the Seoul Bros remained calm and focused. The Seoul Bros
were able to rally back but in the end it wasn’t enough and lost 38-27.
Luckily the Seoul Bros had one more chance to bounce back in the 2nd
Championship game. The Seoul Bros and Germane Systems exchanged run after run each inning, in what seemed like a repeat of the
last game. Then after six innings of play, Germane Systems had come
back from a seven-run deficit to tie the game up at 25 all. In the top
half of the 7th and final inning, the Seoul Bros erupted for 24 runs to
take a sizeable lead. Knowing that no lead was safe when playing
against a talented team like Germane Systems, the Seoul Bros stayed
focused and determined to close out the game. As expected, Germane Systems came out firing in their last at-bats. It seemed as if Germane Systems was about to go on a huge scoring run of their own.
But with clutch pitching from Jeremy Flythe and solid defense, the
Seoul Bros were able to keep Germane Systems to just six runs and
hold on to win the Fall title again in back to back years, 49 - 31.

“You Are Only As Old As You Feel”
By Alan Gillespie and Mike Kosar
This was the second year that Cavalier Softball and Solid Gold combined teams to play in the fall season as a senior’s
team. It was also the second year that we finished the season as Division Champions. As a result, we decided to enter
the end of season fall tournament against the younger players in the open divisions, thinking it would be a fun way to end
the season.
Since our team is composed of players in their 50’s and 60’s, we requested FAS to place us in the “B” division. Our only
concession to this was that we had to play by the open division rules. This meant we could only have one courtesy runner
per inning as opposed to unlimited courtesy runners in senior ball. This concession did concern us since we have several
players that don’t run very well.
The tournament was originally scheduled to be played Saturday and Sunday, but Mother Nature did not cooperate. Saturday was rained out after the first set of games and we had to play all of our games on Sunday.

Annual Officer Election Held
By Christine Frece
Fairfax Adult Softball held its’ annual officer election meeting on Monday, November 17, 2008. Incumbent Scott
Semmler, long time resident of Chantilly, was re-elected by acclimation to the position of 2nd Vice President. Joe Morice, from
Centreville, was elected by acclimation as Secretary. They begin their new term of office on January 1, 2009.
Scott Semmler is excited about entering his second term as 2nd Vice President on
Fairfax Adult Softball’s Executive Committee. He truly believes the FAS program is important
to our community and is dedicated to bringing the enjoyment back to softball.
With regard to disciplinary issues, efforts are underway to curtail the some times competitive nature of FAS players. “The league has really operated well over the past four years in
regards to inappropriate language and poor attitudes being prohibited.” Scott is determined to
implement fresh ideas for continued success in this area. Furthermore, he will work diligently
to get the Standard Operating Procedures manual documented. As Scott prepares enthusiastically to begin work on the 2009 goals, we are happy to have him once again as our 2nd Vice
President of Rules.
Joe Morice expressed a desire to serve the league at the executive level again having
last served in an elected office in 2004-2005 as the organization’s 1st Vice President.
Morice comes to the position looking to specifically steer one effort in addition to the
position’s everyday tasks. He will be taking responsibility for the effort to open the league to
individual registrations in an attempt to expand our team base. The expectation is that individual registration will put FAS on even footing with other recreational sports leagues in the county.
FAS depends heavily on our volunteers and needs new personalities to share brand new ideas. Each year at the FAS
annual organization meeting held in March, team managers elect members to our Board of Directors. These directors meet
monthly throughout the year to review and establish polices and rules for the operation of the program, to provide direction
concerning financial and administrative operations, and, in November, elect the officers of the corporation. These officers
comprise the Executive committee which meets monthly to direct the FAS program. The Executive Committee includes the
President, 1st Vice President (Umpires), 2nd Vice President (Rules), Secretary, and Treasurer. They serve staggered twoyear terms to provide for corporate stability. Hopefully, you will consider joining the board and declare your intent to become a
director at our March 2009 organizational meeting.

Continued from page 8...
We started the day with Softball Tech. That’s just never a fun way to start the day. Fortunately on that cold and windy morning, the Scrubs brought some hot bats to back-up the ace pitching effort of Ab Samoy. At the top of the order, Jon Goodlet and
Kim Scarberry were both 4-5 for the game. Jennifer Dameron and Pete Torres both contributed doubles among other hits.
The Debs (Snyder and Hanneman) earned key walks to keep innings alive. Becky Suttell had a key single in our nine-run third
inning. It was the home-run hitting power of Jeff Ford and Dave Hixson that put the Scrubs on top 22-13.
Next up was Ashley Realty Group Angels and you could see they had some heavy hitters in their deep line-up. The game was
tied 4-4 after one inning, but Ab Samoy came to the rescue again. Ab and the Scrubs ‘D’ were able to hold the Angels to just
one or two runs an inning after that. Jon Goodlet got the Scrubs started with an “in the parker.” While Kim Scarberry and Pete
Torres followed it up with triples. Jennifer Dameron and Jeff Ford would later contribute triples. Third baseman Becky Suttell
hung in after a rough collision at third base. After a few more singles and doubles and another homer from Jeff Ford, the
Scrubs won 20-10.
Coming off a game break, the Scrubs now had to face Mixed Nuts. The Scrubs always seem to be a little shaky after a game
break. The Scrubs’ bats did not come back from the break as quickly as they would’ve liked and they were down 3-5 after
three innings. Luckily the Scrubs’ pitching and defense were still able to keep them in the game. The Scrubs managed a sixrun seventh inning to top the Nuts by a score of 11-5.
With three check marks in the “Win” column, the Scrubs were hopeful they could knock off their next opponent too and simply
be done for the day and walk away champions. With triple-S on tap, it was sure to be a slug-fest. Luckily the Scrubs’ bats
stayed hot after the seventh inning of the Nuts game and the Scrubs came charging out of the gates with a nine-run first inning
lead by home runs from Jeff Ford and Pete Torres. But the Scrubs knew it wasn’t enough. Fortunately Pete Torres was hot,
hot, hot that game. With Jennifer Dameron hitting singles in front of him, Pete hit back-to-back-to-back homers for the Scrubs
to add a couple more runs each inning. Ab Samoy then hit a two-run shot and then pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning to
give the Scrubs a 16-9 lead after four. However, triple-S would still not go away. They put up five runs off two homers in the
bottom of the fifth inning to shorten the Scrubs lead. With two outs and the tying run at the plate, the Scrubs managed to get
the final out and hang in there for the victory, final score 16-14. The Scrubs were the FAS Fall Coed “A” Bracket champions!
And so if you venture through the realm of Braddock Park...beyond the militant combat zone, through the land of candy canes
and gumdrops, you will walk into REALITY and find "the TREE".
Welcome to Scrub Nation…food and libations for all. “One for the
road?” And they continue to live happily ever after...

ORDER YOUR SOFTBALLS FROM FAS FOR 2009!
Call The Office For More Information @ 703-815-9007
As a convenience to our teams, you may order softballs for the 2009 season through FAS. Softballs are not a mandatory purchase but an option for any team that would like to take advantage of
both the offer and the convenience. Both 11” and 12” softballs will be available. The 11” softball is required for all
female batters in all leagues except Reston Church: women’s, coed, and corporate coed. The 12” softball is required
for all male batters in all leagues. Coed teams generally need at least one dozen 11” and one dozen 12” softballs.

Good News in the Midst of Economic Recession
By Sharon Sealock
FAS is pleased to let our membership know that we have been successful in keeping our 2009 application fees
identical to the costs of 2008. The Board of Directors are conscientious protectors and faithful servants of your
program. They worked hard to allow teams to participate in this wonderful recreational program at no increased
costs. We all know that softball provides a great opportunity for ensuring that once-a-week, guaranteed time with
your buds, a great stress reliever to the everyday pressures of work or child care, a modicum of prescribed exercise, and just plain old fun and camaraderie in a competitive and spirited atmosphere. We are hopeful that our financial efforts will enable you to not short-change yourself from these benefits that make for a healthy and vibrant
individual. Keep the kid inside you living through the enjoyment of sport. Plan to play Fairfax Adult Softball again
in 2009, the nation’s single largest organization registered with ASA, the national governing body of softball.

Continued from page 10
Our first game was against Betty Ford’s Allstars. As we were waiting for the game ahead of us to finish, we heard several
comments about how our team “looks old” and “that one has gray hair”. However, age and hair color has nothing to do
with playing ability, as we showed. We were the visitors for this game and we proceeded to put 18 runs on the board in the
first inning batting through the order twice. We ended up winning our first game of the tournament by a score of 28-9.
Our second opponent was Diamond Flames UUCF. This was a very close game throughout. We were ahead by one run
going into the top of the 5th inning, 13-12. We managed to score six runs and held on in the bottom of the inning for a 19-12
victory. We then moved on to our third game of the day, the winner’s bracket final.
We faced Balls Deep in the winner’s bracket final and made it an easy game as we won 22-1. Although Balls Deep never
gave up, it appeared as though they were in shock as to what was happening to them…getting beat badly by a bunch of
old guys.
As we waited for the other teams to fight it out as to who would face us for the championship, Balls Deep was working hard
to get another chance at us and redeem themselves. They accomplished that and met us for the championship game.
Balls Deep played us closely throughout the game. We had a 20-16 lead going into the top half of the seventh inning. The
old guys might have gotten a little complacent, thinking three outs, a handshake and go home as champs. However, Balls
Deep had other ideas. They scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to take a 23-20 lead. We only scored one run in
the bottom half and lost our only game of the day 23-21. Balls Deep had forced the “if” game.
By this time, the sun had gone down and it was cold and windy. These are not ideal conditions for anyone and we were
quite unhappy that we had to play one more game. We took control early and won the game 17-8, adding another T-shirt
to our fall collection.
It was a pleasure playing against the younger teams, and several opposing players said “thanks for the education”.
As a team, we hit .600 and had an on-base-average of .650. The team batting leaders were Bill Cameron (.780), Bob
Coleman (.760), Bill Rice (.750), Tom Tudor (.720) and Henry Schmitt (.710). Other team members were Bill Grewe, Jack
Cantrell, Mike Kosar, Jim Wheatley, Alan Gillespie, Mike Bellows, Kevin Farley and David Black.
As an aside to this article, the Northern Virginia Force, composed mainly of players that participate in the FAS program,
won the ASA 55+ AAA Eastern Nationals held in Burlington, NC on August 29-31. These players include Mike Bellows,
Jack Cantrell, Pat Casey, Alan Gillespie, Melvin Horton, Mike Kosar, Doug Martin, Phil Ponder, Henry Schmitt, Tom Tabor,
Harry Westwood and Jim Wheatley. Non-FAS members included Jeff Bepko, Ed Haith and David Shultz.

NEW RULE CHANGES FOR 2009
By Sharon Sealock
The FAS Board of Directors approved new rules and rule changes for our 2009 spring, summer and fall programs at their December 8, 2008 meeting. Please note, that in general, all
leagues within FAS play under the softball rules adopted by the ASA, except when superseded by FAS rules. Please review the following new rules which are most applicable to
game play, and plan your 2009 season accordingly.
Rule 6: Removed the restriction for a player to play on no more than two teams from any one league.
A person may be on the roster of any team, provided they are not on more than one roster in any one division, and provided players play on only one team in any one tournament.
Rule 77: Added a requirement for Masters and Seniors teams to have verification of age requirements during FAS sponsored tournaments.
In addition, the tournament director reserves the right to verify applicable age requirements for all Masters
and Seniors teams.
Rule 119: Removed the exception for Women’s League. The Women’s League will now use the FAS 1-1 Rule for all
games.
Rule 121: Amended to allow that one player may have a courtesy runner each half inning and as often as that player
requires during each half inning.
Rule 124: Amended to revert back to the 2007 FAS slaughter rule.
If after 4 innings (3 ½ if the home team is ahead), a team is leading by 20 runs or more, or if after 5 innings
(4 ½ if the home team is ahead), a team is leading by 15 runs or more, the game shall end and be considered a complete game.
Rule 130: Require the COR and Compression specifications be imprinted on the softball by the manufacturer. This will
eliminate the use of all Legend brand softballs in FAS play.
The approved softball for FAS play will be those approved by ASA and imprinted by the manufacturer with
the COR and compression specifications for each division of play, and with the ASA, ISA, NSA, SSAA or
USSSA logo.
Rule 130: FAS will NOT adopt the ASA rule change requiring the optic yellow ball be the only softball permitted beginning in 2010.
Rule 142: FAS will adopt the ASA Coed Base On Balls Rule.
When a male player is walked, he is awarded second base, but must touch the bases in the proper order. The
following female batter must bat EXCEPT, with two outs, the female batter has the option to hit or to accept a
walk prior to the next pitch, either delivered or called. Runners advance only as far as forced. Should a female batter-runner pass a male batter-runner when choosing to walk, no out shall be called during this dead
ball period. Exception for Corporate Coed: When a male player is walked, he is only awarded second base
provided the scheduled following batter in the lineup is a female. If the scheduled following batter in the
lineup is a male, the male batter is only awarded first base.
Rule 146. Added a new addenda for the Men’s Master’s League.
Master’s Five-Run Rule: (The rule applies ONLY to inter-division games.) For each inter-division game, the team
from the higher division will always be the home team and bat last. For each half inning, a team may bat until they
score five runs. Should a team be behind at the start of their turn at bat, that team may score more than five runs but
no more than five runs ahead. The half-inning is over once a team scores their five runs, or goes five runs ahead
when losing at the beginning of their turn at bat, or has three outs. With 15 minutes of play left in game time, the umpire will announce that the inning in progress is the last five-run inning. One more inning will be played and either
team may score an unlimited number of runs. Note: The FAS Five-Limit Home Run Rule and the FAS Slaughter Rule
will not be enforced during these inter-division games.

The following are some of the ASA Playing Rule Changes for 2009 which you should review and understand.
Rule 1 Definition of Charged Conference: When a team representative requests a suspension of play or delays the game for the purpose
of delivering a message to another team member, unless the pitcher is removed from pitching position. This allows the coach to
talk to their pitcher before deciding to remove the pitcher without being charged a conference.
Rule 3, Section 1.F.: The bat shall be free of burrs, DENTS, and visible cracks… This adds that the surface of the bats is to be free of
dents. Umpires will no longer have to identify if a dent is small enough for the bat ring to fit over the bat. If a bat has a dent, the bat
shall be removed
Rule 3, Section 1.K.: The rule was amended to allow for new bat technology. The two piece interchangeable construction is permitted
provided it meets new ASA additional criteria.
Rule 4, Section 6.C.1.: Removed the penalty of disqualification from the substitution rule. It only removed the disqualification portion of
the rule; the balance of the penalties still applies. The unreported substitute is now in the game and all rules regarding reentry still
apply.
Rule 8, Section 5.I. When a fair batted ball deflects off a fence then off the fielder before going over the home run fence. Effect: The ball
is dead. All runners and/or batter-runner are awarded two bases from the time of the pitch. This should be a two base award since
it can not be caught for an out. The change allows ASA to be consistent with other organizations.
Rule 8, Section 7.I.2: A live ball appeal is amended to state “If properly appealed by any defensive player during a live ball, the runner is
out.” The old rule required the appeal to be made by a player in possession of the ball.
Congratulations to
Diamond Fever
By Al Tefft
After winning the FAS Senior Division One Tournament in August, Diamond Fever traveled to Virginia
Beach in October to play in the International Senior
Softball Association Winter Nationals.
Diamond Fever took the winners bracket in the 50’s Majors Division by beating the home team,
McGuire’s/OGR, 26-9. The championship game saw the return of McGuire’s, who won the loser’s
bracket and came up to beat Diamond Fever 22-21 in a hard fought contest. In the ‘IF’ game,
McGuire’s went out to a 9-0 lead before Diamond Fever buckled down with tenacious defense and
great hitting to coast to a 22-9 victory, winning by the slaughter rule in 5 innings.
Diamond Fever’s Baer Chandler was named Tournament MVP; Baer batted .781 with 16 HR’s and
36 RBI’s for the weekend. Joining Baer on the All Tournament Team was: Buddy Fauber, John
Moore, Pat Daley, Dennis Hnarakis, and Gerry George.
A special thank you to our sponsors: the John Allan Company, Grove Consulting, Mountaineer Pipe
Corporation and Genesis Technologies, for the their generous support.
