THE HISTORY OF THE
LE CHAMEAU BOOT
A rainy day in Cherbourg in 1927. A shoemaker. To the rear of the shop
sits a man, his head on his worktable. The man is Claude Chamot. He is
unaware that he is about to revolutionise the art of boot making.
An agricultural engineer, Claude Chamot spent his day to day life rubbing shoulders
with people whose lives revolved around nature: farmers, growers and oyster breeders,
alongside hunters and fishermen. Every day, he heard them complain of the discomfort
caused by their lace-up boots, combat boots and other shoes, of them not being watertight, of how quickly the soles wore down…
For them, he sets to work on a new type of sole. Intuitively, he tried the production of
boots in natural rubber.
He gave the prototypes to those around him: comfortable, hardwearing and flexible,
everyone loved them.
Little by little, the men of the region came to him for bespoke boots. The story of Le
Chameau had begun.
The workshop at the back of Mrs Chamot’s would soon not be enough.
In 1939, off the back of this success, Claude Chamot acquired a workshop at Pont
d’Ouilly, in Normandy. There, he started to produce his boots on a larger scale. His teams
were given a single rule: that they must conform to the artisan method and exceptional
expertise that were to ensure his good reputation.
Despite the war, his business continued to prosper. In 1949, Claude Chamot took the
decision to open a new production site in Casablanca, Morocco, to develop his presence
in the Maghreb (still a French Protectorate) and meet ever-growing demand. Because
quality is one of the brand’s key values, here he employed Normandy-trained master
boot makers.
With a nod to the country, the extreme hard-wearing quality of the boots, their primary
vocation in mind, the Chamot brand became Le Chameau.
En 1950, Claude Chamot created the talking point in the world of boot making, creating
the Saint-Hubert: the first rubber boot with leather lining. Combining the know-how of
the saddler and the master boot maker, the Saint-Hubert became the must-have for
hunters, just as it is 60 years later.
Today, the manufacturing business opened half a century ago continues: this endurance
bears witness to the never-ending enthusiasm for these unique products, constant both
in their design and their production.

LE CHAMEAU, MASTER BOOTMAKER
WITH A UNIQUE EXPERTISE FOR
MORE THAN 80 YEARS
Using unique manufacturing processes
in combination with technical innovation,
Le Chameau boots provide the link
between design and tradition, for
constant innovation in the boot making
world.
A Le Chameau boot is craftsman’s knowledge
combined with the rare mastery of a noble,
authentic material: rubber.
Sorted according to the evenness of its appearance
and quality, the rubber goes through a rigorous
selection process: only the most handsome
natural rubber samples goes into the making of a
Le Chameau boot.
After selection, a whole series of steps follow,
combining passion and perfection.
A Le Chameau boot is precise assembly techniques, passed from generation to generation. It is also a tale of men who, after a long
and rigorous apprenticeship, are involved in each stage of production: handcrafted by a
single master boot maker, each boot is truly unique.
A Le Chameau boot is a sign of innovation. Materials used are carefully selected for their
qualities and characteristics: leather, fur, neoprene, Kevlar, Air Comfort membrane, nitrile
rubber or iron filings… there are so many answers to the various consumer needs.
Since the beginning, the house of Le Chameau has used new technical innovations to
improve comfort, resistance and suppleness.
Aiming for excellence, its aim is also to evolve, adding to its collections to best respond
to the needs of nature lovers who are demanding but faithful clients.
With ten calf fittings and numerous leg lengths, some Le Chameau boots come close to
made-to-measure!
4
MADE TO MEASURE
Unique skills and exceptional expertise allow Le Chameau to meet the highest of standards.
Every year, they produce personalised boots, changing the length, adjusting the calf fitting
or sole, integrating an internal lift…
What’s more, each boot with leather lining is made to measure.
MANUFACTURING SECRETS
The manufacture of a boot is testimony to the know-how synonymous
with perfection, passed on in the workshops.
Each collection has its own personality, and each model hasits
particularities. However, they all start in the same way, and all include
the touches made so important by Mr Chamot.
The natural rubber is boiled for 50 minutes in a large trough (1) with a carefully chosen
mixture of dyes, protective chemicals, oil and sulphur. Now a long, even, strip of coloured
rubber, it is then laid out (2). It is then quickly cut and placed in the large sections of lightcoloured cotton or thick blanks which will be used to mould the soles (3).
Before being passed on to the master boot makers, each shank, each reinforcement,
each upper or zip is covered in latex to ensure that each part of the boot moulds during
vulcanization.
All of this is achieved without a single stitch or rivet, without anything to compromise on
comfort or waterproofness.
At the same time, the rubber soles are moulded (4). In the cutting room, on the large
cutting machines, pattern cutters make the linings (leather, jersey, neoprene, fur or fabric (5):
these too are hand-covered in latex, so that they stick to the rubber (6).
Once all the pieces are ready, the master boot maker sets to work: precise and rapid
movements are needed in this process, something would appear that seems almost
magical to the uninitiated. With perfect dexterity, the master boot maker assembles the
different parts of the boot: front reinforcements to the shank, bellows and straps, and
finally the sole. The reinforced thickness is pinned, hammered and cut for a perfect finish.
Nothing is left to chance, everything is the result of a long apprenticeship: the master boot
maker becomes a master of arts.
Once the boots are assembled, they are placed in pairs in the autoclave and heated at
more than 100 °C for some time, depending on the lining material. This is what is known
as vulcanization (7).
Once vulcanized, the pairs are removed from the mould, and are taken to the finishing
workshop (8): trimming, finishing, quality control and finally packaging to finish off this
ancient craftsmanship.
QUALITY CONTROL
In keeping with Mr Chamot’s working philosophy, each worker looks after his or her own
workstation, from one step of production to another, ensuring maximum quality.
From one step to another, each piece of the boot is subject to visual quality tests as well
as random fit tests.

HUNTING
Like any true passion, hunting is
demanding, and “just about” isn’t
good enough. Since the early days,
Le Chameau has designed boots
that fit with lifestyle and its codes
and its values.
There are specific designs for
the professionals: gamekeepers,
woodsmen…
SAINT-HUBERT HERITAGE
In 1950, Claude Chamot combined saddler
and boot making expertise together, creating
an innovative boot that is now legendary:
the SAINT-HUBERT. The first rubber boot
lined with full-grain leather, recognisable by
its curved upper, fit a sturdiness.
More than ever, Le Chameau is synonymous
with creativity.
Today it is unequalled in hard-wearing
qualities in bad weather and difficult
terrain make it the dream boot for hunting,
and a real benchmark in both quality and
durability.
Since its creation, the handcrafted SAINTHUBERT has been known for its comfort
and fit, available in ten calf circumferences
and sixteen-foot sizes.
While the spirit and the overall look of the
boot remain the same, the SAINT-HUBERT
HERITAGE, with its various high-quality
finishes, continues the success of the SAINT
HUBERT (leather trim on upper boot leg,
sole with reinforced shank, double Kevlar
rubber reinforcements, removable easyclean insole, full-grain leather lining…).

HORSE RIDING
More than a sport, horse riding
is an encounter – an encounter
between man and his mount, an
encounter of mutual respect.
Since its creation, Le Chameau has
offered the closest-fitting riding
boots, so that harmony with the
horse is absolute.
“Made in France”
An expression of true art de vivre, Le Chameau relies on 100%
French expertise, techniques inherited from the Normandy master
boot makers, supported and updated by the internal R&D team, as
well as on superb materials and technical skills.
Each year, more than 350,000 boots are produced in France and
Morocco. All of the leather-lined made-to-measure boots produced using saddlery skills,
have been made at the original Pont d’Ouilly factory since 1927.
In 2010, the French Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Employment acknowledged
this unique expertise, designating the house of Le Chameau an “Entreprise du Patrimoine
Vivant”, designed to highlight French businesses using excellent traditional and industrial
skills.
ALEZAN PRESTIGE ZIPPEE
Riding boot with back zip, a waterproof
gusset, full-grain leather lining for maximum
comfort. The ALEZAN boot boasts a mono
material sole with diamond-shaped point
grip and a heel designed to pull out of the
stirrup with ease.
It is available in a choice of 10 calf fittings
and cavalier cut. Combining elegance with
practicality, it is testament to the knowhow of the house of Le Chameau.
A boot created for horse riding, designed
to feel the smallest of movements.
11
ANGLING
Patience and attention to detail
are the key words: angling is
above all a state of mind. Since
its creation, Le Chameau has
created boots for amateur and
professional anglers alike.
DELTA LIMAILLE
The DELTA LIMAILLE is specially designed
for fishing in rivers and streams. This
thighboot contains a jersey lining for
greater insulation and ease.
Grip specifically designed for river fishing:
iron filings are used for maximum grip. The
DELTA LIMAILLE offers superior comfort
and waterproofing.
THE SOLE, ACCORDING TO LE CHAMEAU
Because the finishes are part of the very excellence of its products, Le Chameau thinks
of every little detail, as is the case with the sole. The sole is an integral part of these high
standards: designed by the in-house R&D teams, it is made of mono or bi-density rubber,
depending on the use of the boot.
The type of grip is chosen according to user requirements. Each range has its own sole, as
each range is designed for a specific use. 15 different soles have been created to meet the
different requirements for comfort, stability, and grip strength…
13
THE SEA
Ever unpredictable, the sea is the
site for a multitude of surprises.
Wild, it lives for the moment. For
anyone working with the sea,
whether daily or occasionally, Le
Chameau has the perfect boot.
Because they are ruled by the
tides, because the sea is their
tool, Le Chameau also offers
boots specifically designed for
professionals (oyster farmers,
fishermen, coastguards, etc.).
14
NEPTUNE
OCEANE
Designed in collaboration with experienced
sailors, NEPTUNE is a unique boot. Made
with an integrated gaiter to prevent water
from going up the leg, it offers easy removal
thanks to the rear mesh.
Its 3mm neoprene lining is particularly
adapted for cold weather. The non-stain, antislip “flat” sole is equiped with suction cups
and allows you to move with confidence.
The OCEANE professional thighboot has
several supports for maximum resistance.
Jersey lining provides comfortable wear.
The OCEANE thigh boot has an Ostrea bidensity sole that is hard-wearing to abrasion
with a special grip that is perfectly adapted
for the sea.
UNIQUE LININGS
Le Chameau has been working with the best materials, whether natural or technical, for
many years. These materials are chosen for their properties when combined with Rubber.
Depending on the intended use of the boot, the lining will be primarily leather, jersey,
synthetic fur or neoprene.
Chosen for its suppleness, hard wearing and its capacity of absorption
and desorption, the LEATHER used in Le Chameau boots is French
full-grain calf leather, and comes straight from the tannery. It offers
comfort like no other, enveloping the foot. Specific treatments are
applied to the leather linings to maintain the suppleness, even when
wet: it is the lining for all “four seasons”.
Combined with the rubber, JERSEY is used to make “mid-season”
linings. This fabric, which is 50% cotton and 50% synthetic, is known
for its comfort and resistance to friction.
SYNTHETIC FUR offers excellent protection in average winter
conditions, and offers unrivalled style and comfort.
Le Chameau is the first brand to use micro bubble neoprene, used
for its excellent temperature resistance (up to -25 degrees) and its
elasticity. It has obviously been chosen for boots designed for use in
low temperatures.
Other materials are recent additions to Le Chameau boots, particularly
KEVLAR, a particularly hardwearing and elastic fibre, or AIR COMFORT
membranes used for ventilation. Micro-regulating, breathable and
hard-wearing, this material was patterned in 2007 by Le Chameau. It
allows air to be constantly placed between foot and boot, keeping the
foot dry. Another example of the way Le Chameau respects absolute
comfort.
THE ART OF
COUNTRY LIVING
Synonymous with well-being and
authenticity, country living has
never been so trendy! For anyone
spending their day to day life
in the country, Le Chameau has
reinvented their classic boot and
offers something totally current…
even urbanites will want them!
At the same time, Le Chameau
continues to produce products
specifically for farmers, offering
comfort and resistance for those
working outdoors.
VIERZON LADY
The VIERZON LADY is a perfect example
of how Le Chameau marries fashion with
the every day. VIERZON LADY is a rain
boot, available in several striking and trendy
colours, without compromising on the
quality so essential to le Chameau: fully
adjustable, it offers an adjustable gusset
and strap, while its notched bi-density
non-slip sole responds to any requirements.
16
COUNTRY ALL TRACKS
PICARDIE
With COUNTRY ALL TRACKS, a traditional
boot with a trimmed upper, Le Chameau
proves once again that it is able to produce
multi-use boots, at home as well as in the
garden or country.
With leather lining, a curved and reinforced
upper and robust strong grip sole, the
PICARDIE boot combines comfort and
strength in a work boot.
TRUE COLOUR EXPERTISE
Rubber is a natural product whose colour may vary slightly depending on production
methods, weather conditions and harvesting conditions for the latex. Its natural colour
resembles honey, but each batch is thoroughly tested and regulated, in order to obtain the
famous Le Chameau colours.
Le Chameau is the master of colouring natural rubber. All colours depend on the specific
rubber recopies used for the boot type. Each dye is carefully adjusted according to boot
type, use and desired effect: simple, sober colours for open-air activities (fishing, hunting
etc.), energetic, eclectic colours for the fashion-savvy… even certain hues, such as the
Verizon green or Saint-Hubert brown are now so emblematic they have become the
reference points for the industry’s colour range.
