On budget and on schedule, the new Martha’s Vineyard Hospital is taking shape, thanks to a multitude of generous donors.
A Letter to the Community
As this annual report was going out last June, the
foundation of the new Martha’s Vineyard Hospital was
being poured and preparations were being made for
framing. Now as another summer opens, we are delighted to report that the construction of our new Hospital remains on budget – and on schedule to open early
next year.
A handsome and sturdy new building now stands on
the Hospital campus, and the focus has already shifted
from heavy lifting to the detailed work of outfitting this
new facility with everything necessary to deliver the
quality of care we are committed to provide.
As this work of finishing the new Hospital presses forward, our primary mission is and will always be the delivery of quality health care to the Vineyard community.
On this central front, we have a number of accomplishments to report.
* We’ve had a year of notable recruiting success. In
November, Dr. Linda Stewart, OB/GYN joined our
medical staff, and in January, Dr. Willie J. Cater, orthopedic surgeon, also joined us. These two experienced, caring and highly skilled doctors are tremendous
additions to the MVH team.
* This spring, the Hospital began a project that puts
it at the very forefront of community hospitals across
the United States, moving to a comprehensive system
of electronic medical records. This is the same system
used by Massachusetts General Hospital and the other
affiliated institutions of Partners Healthcare, the network MVH joined in 2007. Electronic medical records
will be a great boon to quality of care for our patients,
many of whom travel to Boston for specialized services

there. When this new system is implemented later this
year, doctors in Boston and on the Vineyard will have
the same instant access to complete records of the patients in their care.
* Windemere has enjoyed a year of remarkable successes. First, Windemere sought and won rate relief
from the state, persuading regulators that the unique
costs of doing business on the Island should be reflected
in our Medicaid reimbursements. Renovations to
Windemere’s assisted living center, now called Wildflower Court, were completed, and the resident census
is up by 50 percent. Windemere has won $235,000 in
federal funding for renovations to the rest of the center.
And this month, Windemere graduated the second class
in its Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) training program.
For employees in the program, this means professional
certification for work at a better wage. For Windemere,
it means a supply of skilled nurses right here on the Island, able to provide continuity of care for the center’s
residents.
* For the second year in a row, Martha’s Vineyard
Hospital won the coveted Summit Award from Press
Ganey Associates, Inc., the industry’s leading satisfaction measurement and improvement firm. This is one
honor we never tire of winning, because it speaks so directly to our mission: the Summit Award goes to hospitals which rank among the top five percent of all
hospitals in the nation in measures of patient satisfaction.
* Finally, we are pleased to report both Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center ended their fiscal years solidly in the black
– no mean feat in this difficult economic climate. We
must quickly add, however, that this institution’s continued viability will always depend upon the generosity
of our supporters whose commitment makes our work
possible. For all your support, we are profoundly grateful.
In the pages of this annual report, you’ll find many
more stories about our dedicated staff and their service
to the Vineyard community. Taken together, they paint
a portrait of an institution where “care” is much more
than merely the second word in the phrase, “health
care.” New buildings will go up, new technologies will
arrive, economic cycles will come and go. But through
all these changes, nothing can displace compassion as
the central ingredient of this enterprise. Keeping the
quality of care at the center of all we do is our mission,
and our promise to you.

This past year has again been a very good year for Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. I recently had the opportunity to tour the new hospital building and came away remarkably energized. The interior
design and space is spectacular, and combined with the excellent
care that you tell us that we deliver, we will have a medical facility
second to none.
Our medical staff continues to expand to meet the needs of the
community. This year, we have added Dr. Willie Cater to enhance
the delivery of orthopedic services and our new obstetriciangynecologist, Dr. Linda Stewart, is a welcome addition to our
women’s health team. Our Emergency Department, led by Dr. Tim
Tsai, was again awarded the prestigious Summit Award for patient
satisfaction – a most notable achievement.
Our relationship with the Massachusetts General Hospital continues to evolve in a very positive direction. All of our physicians
now have access to the electronic medical records of patients evaluated not just at the MGH, but also at the other hospitals that make
up the Partners HealthCare organization. We are very excited that
electronic medical records will be a reality in our hospital physician
offices by the end of this calendar year. We have joined in several
of the medical rounds presented at the MGH in Boston via videodata-link and we plan to expand such linkages over time. Not only
do we foresee such links playing a prominent role in the education
of our staff, but we think that they will become an important part
of our delivery of care involving subspecialty care such as trauma,
dermatology, neurology, and more. A great deal of planning has
gone into our new facility to ensure that the infrastructure needed
for such programs will be in place.
On behalf of our medical staff, I want to thank you for your support in making quality health care on Martha’s Vineyard a priority
and a reality. I look forward to reporting next year when our patient
care activities will have shifted to our new hospital building.

Hospital Construction Progresses
“The staff has been deeply involved in decisions
about where clinical equipment goes.
We’re asking the end-users to get involved.”
Much of the winter was bitterly cold at
the construction site of the new Martha’s
Vineyard Hospital, with north winds whipping in from the water. “Just walking back
and forth to the building,” says Cornelius
(Connie) Bulman, clerk of the works for the
building project, “I’d find myself with what
I call an ice cream headache.”
The good news is that despite the weather,
work inside the building was able to continue through the winter, and the Hospital
project remains on schedule to open early in
2010.
“The reason we’re on schedule,” says Mr.
Bulman, “is that we were able to button up
the exterior of the building last fall, before
the cold weather rolled in. We pumped in
heat all winter long, which allowed the crews
to get in there and start framing, and to install a lot of the mechanical and electrical
systems inside.”
To the public, the most visible progress
has been on the outside of the steel-framed
Hospital building with its façade of
brick and stone. Progress is apparent
almost hourly at the Hospital’s website,
www.mvhospital.com, which keeps a highresolution webcam trained on the building.

work done, the interior spaces are now the
leading edge of the project, and the myriad
details that will transform a sturdy new
building into a functioning hospital are the
primary focus.
Inside the new Hospital, Mr. Bulman
highlights the list of accomplishments: “The
second floor is framed out, and most of the
drywall is up. The mechanical and electrical
systems are all in place. On the first floor,
we’re all framed out, and the systems are
going into the walls.”
“The staff has been deeply involved in decisions about where clinical equipment goes.
We’re asking the end-users to get involved,”
says Mr. Bulman. “Nurses, doctors and staff
bring a lot of expertise to a project like this
– they know where things belong. We are
also planning a focused evaluation by our
surgeons and OR staff to make sure we get
the operating room exactly right. Everyone
who works in that room had input.”
“Partners HealthCare and their IT team
are involved in the design and installation of
all the structured cable that will handle communication both inside the Hospital and
with its affiliate, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.” says Mr. Bulman. “When
we open the doors to the new Hospital, we
want to make sure that every wire inside the
new building is capable of accessing all the
technology that resides up at Mass General,
as well as the physicians there.”
“Information is our lifeline. We’re part of
one of the best health care systems in the
country, and we want to take advantage of
that.”
This summer, the work of finishing and
equipping the Hospital interior will press
forward, from dry-walling to painting, flooring, and installation of cabinetry and clinical
apparatus. Mr. Bulman hopes that the first
plantings, part of an extensive landscaping
plan, can be done this fall.
“The builders,” says Mr. Bulman, “are
working closely with the U.S. Green Building Council to seek LEED certification for
meeting the highest standards in environmentally sound building practices. We hope
to achieve the LEED Silver certification,” he
says, “but we won’t know the level of certification until the project is completed and has
undergone a review.”
Mr. Bulman says that with all the volume
of details he’s tracking now as this 90,000square-foot facility comes together, “Sometimes it’s like trying to take a drink out of a
fire hydrant.” But he’s clearly delighted with
both the pace of progress and the quality of
work being done on the new Hospital.
“I can’t speak too highly of our architects,
Thomas, Miller & Partners LLC – they’ve
done an outstanding job with the design of
this building. Our contractor, Columbia
Construction, has also been doing a great job
along with all of the subcontractors. Everyone is working together well. There’s a lot of
enthusiasm out there.”

Resort quietly raises
$165,000 for the Hospital

ark Snider, co-owner with
his wife, Gwenn, of the
Winnetu Oceanside Resort in
Edgartown, is an avid Island history buff. He can tell you how
the Winnetu, near South Beach,
stands on the former site of the
Katama Shores Hotel, and that
the site served as a naval base in
World War II and was once the
terminus of a railroad line running from the steamship wharf in
Oak Bluffs.
Mr. Snider doesn’t brag about
it, but he’s been making history
at Winnetu himself, with a creative donation program that, in
less than a decade, has quietly
raised some $165,000 in support
for Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
Winnetu Resort has been
named one of America’s 10 most
family-friendly resorts by Parents.com, the online home of
Parents and Family Circle magazines. And ever since he first established the Winnetu in 2000,

Gwenn and Mark Snider, owners of the Winnetu Resort, developed a creative donation program that resulted in a
$165,000 boost to hospital fundraising.
Mr. Snider has been giving the
resort’s visiting families a unique
opportunity to support the Hospital – with a voluntary donation
that’s built right into their hotel
bill.
“I love the Island,” says Mr.
Snider, “and when this hotel was
built, I realized it was important
to think more broadly about the
Island and its needs. We started
this program the year we opened
the hotel.” In fact, Winnetu was
such a young business in that first
year that the first check to the
hospital from the program, in
2000, arrived on Katama Shores
stationery.
“Basically,” Mr. Snider explains, “this program asks each of
our guests at Winnetu to give the
Hospital a voluntary $25 contribution when they stay with us.
“What we do is present the
rate, including the donation, and
if our guests wish, they can
deduct the donation. It’s really
very simple. It all depends how
you ask, of course. But you really
can make a meaningful difference. And over the years, all these
$25 gifts have added up to an
awful lot.”

when it comes to supporting the

Mr. Snider says: “The Hospital is such an important institution, and I’m so glad we can help
generate this support for it.”
Speaking more personally, he
adds that it’s impossible to live
here for any span of years without appreciating the Hospital’s
essential role. “There’s no question that Gwenn and I, during
our children’s younger years, had
a number of occasions to use the
Hospital’s services.”
“There’s one more benefit to
this unique donation program,”
says Mr. Snider. “This program
also makes our employees feel really good. Most people aren’t
even aware we do this – we don’t
make a lot of noise about it – but
it makes you feel good when you
know you’re doing something
that benefits our entire community.”

Welcome Willie Cater, M.D.
Thirty years ago, after receiving his MD degree
from Tufts University, Dr. Willie J. Cater spent a
summer on the Vineyard working in the
emergency room of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and

never forgot it. Now, after a distinguished
career as attending staff surgeon at Carney
Hospital in Dorchester, he’s come back.
“During that summer,” he recalls, “I had such a
good feeling about the Vineyard. I knew if I had
the opportunity to come back and work here
someday, I would.”
Dr. Cater, who is board certified and a member
of the American Academy of Orthopedic
Surgeons, joined the medical staff at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Jan. 1. Since then, Dr. Cater says,
he and his assistant, Ralph Buck, have been busy.
“We’re averaging anywhere from 15 to 21
patients in a day, ranging in age from 2 to 96
years,” says Mr. Buck. “It’s clear that there’s a real
need here.”
As an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Cater has
extensive experience in diagnosing and treating
acute and chronic disorders including sports
injuries and arthritis. He treats fractures and
performs reconstructive surgery, joint replacement
and tendon and ligament repairs. In his first three
months here, he’s already done two total hip
replacements.
But Dr. Cater is quick to emphasize that surgery
itself is just a part of what he does. “When people
come to an orthopedic surgeon, they often don’t
understand that they’re probably not going to wind
up having surgery. We find other ways to manage
things.”
Dr. Cater’s work involves him with a whole
team of professionals at the Hospital. “We do a
lot of diagnostics,” he says. “We utilize a lot of
physical therapy, injection therapy, and casting
of breaks, prescribing medication – then there’s
instruction and education, we do a lot of that,
too.”
Dr. Cater, a native of Boston, knew even before
medical school that he wanted to pursue a career
as a surgeon. “I initially thought I might go into
thoracic or cardiovascular surgery, because I had
an atrial defect, a hole in the heart. I had it
repaired at Mass General where I had open heart
surgery at the age of 21 – so I know what it’s like
to be on the receiving end.”
He ultimately chose orthopedics, he says,
because it’s a specialty filled with positive
outcomes, and he enjoys helping people. “We’re
often working with basically healthy people who
have an injury,” he says, “and we can get them back
to where they were before they got hurt.”
Dr. Cater enjoys working with athletes, and has
a special connection, having been a famed sprinter
during his undergraduate years at Northeastern
University. (Ask him what distances were his
specialty, and he’ll answer with a wry smile, “The
shorter the better.”)
Dr. Cater has found orthopedic surgery to be
both a challenging and a satisfying career choice. “I
think orthopedics has advanced perhaps more than
any other specialty,” he says. “Almost every joint in
the body now can be replaced. The quality of the
materials we use has improved. The invasiveness of
these surgeries has been greatly reduced. Imaging –
our ability to see what we’re doing – has improved.
It’s just constantly changing, and constantly getting
better.”
Dr. Cater says he appreciates the importance of
community connections at Martha’s Vineyard
Hospital – something that was important to him at
Carney Hospital as well.
“Carney Hospital,” he says, “is a community
hospital in the Dorchester section of Boston. It’s a
very diverse community, and it’s relatively poor
overall. But it’s where the people are, and that’s why
I wanted to be there.”
Dr. Cater says that same human connection is
the reason people cite most often when they choose
to have their surgeries at MVH. “I think the
expectation patients have is that wherever they go,
the surgeons are board certified, they’ve gone
through the training, and the surgery is going to
be okay. It’s the compassion part of it – I think
they’re here because they feel there’s a lot more
compassion. They want their surgeries done here
on the Island because of that.”
Dr. Cater adds, “The pace here is slower than at
an urban hospital, which means you can spend
more time with your patients, and that’s a positive.
You can see your patients at surgery, you can see
them on the acute ward, and on the rehab side –
that’s also a positive. You get to follow them
straight through, and have the pulse of them during the rehab period, which is so very important.”
Returning to his decision to come here, Dr.
Cater says, “I have a lot of experience behind me
now, and I’ve been thinking more about the whole
quality of life – not my professional life alone. Now
I’m in a setting where I can do some of the things
I really enjoy – fishing and hiking, going out and
observing nature. That’s part of what drew me back
here.”
He concludes, “I’m feeling very positive about
the decision to come here.” And flashing another
smile, he adds: “Of course, I still have to go
through the real season, to see how hectic it is.”
Safety is a Matter of Balance
Physical therapists Marcela Pouliot and Claudia
Macedo are reaching out to the Island community
with an urgent message: There are things you can
do to reduce the risk of injury from falls, and
Martha’s Vineyard Hospital can help.
For the past three years, Marcela and Claudia
have offered free balance assessments at the Hospital’s spring Health Fair, and earlier this year they
presented a talk and offered testing at the Oak
Bluffs Council on Aging. In each of these programs, the pair connected with people who can
benefit from the Hospital’s help.
Strength, flexibility, vision, sensory awareness –
there are many contributors to balance, and a
weakening of even one can increase the risk of
falls. It’s an important issue: falls are by far the
most common cause of serious injury to the elderly. According to the national Centers for Disease
Control, one in three people more than age 65 suffer a fall each year. Between a quarter and a third
of these people suffer injuries that make it hard for
them to get around or live independently and even
increase their chances of early death.
A program of exercise is one of the most important preventive steps you can take. “We find that
elderly people are already very fearful of falling,”
says Ms. Macedo. “Sometimes they almost create
a problem for themselves by avoiding activity, so
they become weaker and less flexible, and one
thing leads to another.”
The good news is that strength and flexibility
can be improved. For other issues, like weakening
vision and peripheral neuropathy, says Ms.
Pouliot, “We teach compensatory strategies.”
This Hospital team also considers a person’s environment. “What’s in your home that could potentially trip you, including your pet?” asks Ms.
Macedo. “We can do home assessments to give an
idea of how the environment plays a role. Lighting
inside the home, for example, is very important.
We encourage people to leave a light on at night in
case they need to get up, so they can scan their environment.”
The Hospital tailors its program to what each
Medication Disposal:
Keeping Our Island Green
Across the United States, an estimated 250 million
pounds of unused consumer medications – pharmaceutical waste – are disposed of every year just from patients pouring them down the drain or flushing
them away.
But, “away” can lead into aquifers and potentially into water supplies. Across the country, initiatives are growing to promote more
responsible disposal of pharmaceutical waste.
This April, in honor of Earth Day, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital held its
first medical disposal collection program, and collected expired medications from more than 15 attendees.
David Caron, director of the pharmacy, says the Hospital intends to
continue offering these collection days on a regular basis. Medications
gathered in this program are combined with waste the Hospital is disposing of already.
“We send everything we collect to an incineration company, where it’s
all dealt with responsibly.”
“There are concerns in some quarters,” Mr. Caron says, “about the
possible long-term effects of dropping medications into public water
supplies. For us, I think the idea is why not be proactive about this? Improper disposal of anything has an effect on us all, somewhere down the
line.”
He concludes: “This may be a small contribution to the Vineyard environment, but you know, every little bit counts.”
individual needs to be safer from falls in their
everyday lives. “Usually we’ll work with someone
twice a week for four weeks,” says Ms. Macedo,
“and then we’ll test again and see how they’ve improved. There’s extensive research out there showing that after four to six weeks of training, people’s
balance can definitely be improved. This kind of
program can really prevent a lot of falls.”
At the end of treatment, the Hospital connects
their patients with programs at local senior centers
and elsewhere in the community. “After they finish with us,” Ms. Pouliot says, “we try to help
them tap into some sort of community-based exercise program. It’s important for people not to go
back to their old routine, but to have a better routine so they can remain active and strong.”

A recent survey by the National
Stroke Association found that one in
three Americans could not name a
single symptom of a stroke. MaryPatrice Ruocco, stroke team coordinator at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital,
is on a mission to make sure Vineyarders know the symptoms, and the
importance of acting fast.
F.A.S.T. in fact, is the new
acronym in the national effort to
build public awareness of stroke
symptoms.
S = SPEECH.
Ask the person to repeat a sentence.
Are the words slurred?
T = TIME.
If you suspect a stroke, call 911 immediately,
because time is critical.
“Sooner is better than later if you
suspect a stroke is involved,” says Ms.
Ruocco. “Usually the person experiencing the stroke is unable to recognize it. Most often it’s the people who
are witnessing the event who are the
change agents. That’s why we’re trying to front-load the community
with this awareness.”
The Hospital’s stroke team has
made presentations at the Tisbury
Senior Center and at the Edgartown
School, and is ready to speak to any
group, however small, that invites
them.
“Everybody needs to know about
this,” says Ms. Ruocco. “Fifty percent of the good outcomes in stroke
cases are because somebody knew
what to do.”

Windemere Buddies
Betsy Burmeister, recreation director at Windemere
Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, has launched a
long list of creative programs to enrich the lives of
Windemere’s residents. “That’s my job,” she says with
a shrug and a grin – “trying to help the residents
remain engaged in life.” Perhaps the most successful
program of them all brings a busload of visiting
children to Windemere each month from the
Chilmark School.
The intergenerational program at Windemere,
launched in the fall of 2005 with a grant from the
Permanent Endowment Fund for Martha’s Vineyard,
was based on Ms. Burmeister’s love of photography
and a sense that photography could be a way to
connect young people with the elderly. “I know our
residents love children,” she says. “I was thinking that
maybe if we could find some kids to buddy up with
the residents, we could do a photography project.”
Working together, Ms. Burmeister and Jack Regan
who teaches second and third grades at the Chilmark
School, developed plans for Growing Up-Island, a
program in which kids would take pictures of their
lives to share with the residents of Windemere. From
the beginning, Ms. Burmeister and Mr. Regan knew
they’d hit on a winning formula. “Sharing the photos,” she says, “really opens the doors for communication. The residents see the pictures, and they talk
about their childhoods and their lives.”
Since the second and third-graders have buddied
up with Windemere residents, real friendships have
developed. Says Ms. Burmeister, “Jessica Weaver is in
love with her two boys, Coltrane Leport and Levi
Moreis. She thinks of them as grandchildren. The
boys even come here in the summer to visit her.”
The Chilmark School has brought local
photographers into the classroom to help the kids
polish their skills. At the end of each school year the

kids put their work on display at Featherstone
Center for the Arts and most recently at the
Chilmark branch of Martha’s Vineyard Savings
Bank. They even produced a calendar of their
pictures to raise funds for the program.
But Jack Regan says the children are learning
about much more than photography.
He recalls: “Some of the kids were nervous at
first about going to Windemere, especially the ones
who don’t have close ties to grandparents at home.
But gradually that changed.”
Now, as he goes through the rooms of
Windemere during their visits, he says, “I find
even my shyest students sitting with their friends,
talking a blue streak about the pictures, about their
lives. Most of the residents are just spellbound to
have these kids come visit them.”
Says Mr. Regan, “You know, in second grade it’s
all about me – but this program really gets them
outside of themselves, and helps them develop an
empathy for what some of the residents have to
endure.”
“The theme for our last visit was springtime.
Kids took their cameras out to the brook behind
the Chilmark School and took pictures. I said to
them, think about it – some of these folks can’t
easily get outside. You love going outside to play
now that spring has arrived – let’s bring some
spring inside for your friends at Windemere.”
The Growing Up-Island program has been so
successful, in fact, that it was expanded last year
to bring kindergartners and first-graders along on
the monthly outings to Windemere under the
guidance of their teacher, Robin Smith. “These
kids are just five and six years old,” says Ms.
Burmeister. “It’s wonderful the way they go right
around the room, introducing themselves.”
The intergenerational program, in Betsy
Burmeister’s view, plays to one of Windemere’s
greatest strengths – its deep connections to the
Vineyard community. “It’s all about the
community,” she says. “From the children to our
nurses and nurses’ aides, there are so many
connections. Everybody seems to know each other;
it’s part of what makes this such a special place.”
Mr. Regan believes this program enriches his
students as much as it does the residents of
Windemere. “This gives us opportunities as
teachers,” he says, “to talk about the cycle of life. It
does bring it home – that we’re born, we live and we
die. Here are people near the end of their time.
Helping them and bringing smiles to their faces is
important and the kids get that, they really do.”
MRI Service Expands
After years of traveling back and forth on the ferries, the MRI is now a year-round resident at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
A mobile MRI unit had been visiting the Vineyard for scans on Saturdays and Sundays;
a permanent machine was installed at the Hospital in February. “Now we’re doing scans on
Sunday, Monday and Thursday,” says Peggy Ekholm, director of diagnostic imaging. “The
response to this expanded service has been very good – so the need is clearly there. If we
see that this trend continues, we’ll add to our schedule.”
The Hospital’s MRI unit is state-of-the-art – on a par with the best equipment used by
the largest hospitals in Boston. And thanks to the MVH partnership with Massachusetts
General Hospital, scans made here are read by some of the nation’s leading specialists.
“We have been talking about bringing the MRI here permanently for some time, listening to physicians and watching the volume of usage,” Ms. Ekholm says. “It’s not that the
traveling MRI machine was inferior,” she says, “but there were times when bad weather
stopped the ferries and forced cancellations.”
“Looking ahead,” says Ms. Ekholm: “Our new building is designed with space for an
MRI unit if needed, inside. This is kind of an interim step, to meet the community need.”
Transitional Care —
When you’re not quite ready to go home
When the jump from hospital care to home is
just too big, patients often need something inbetween to ease that transition. Since 2002,
Martha’s Vineyard Hospital has been offering just
such a service with its transitional care program.
Transitional care, also known as the “Swing Bed”
program, is for Medicare patients who no longer
need acute care, but do need skilled nursing to help
in their recoveries and to prepare them for a return
to life at home.
Gayle Poggi, director of case management at the
Hospital, oversees the transitional care program,
which serves about 150 patients each year. About
half these patients are returning to the Island after
hospitalization in Boston; the others are Hospital
patients for whom the transition to rehab care is so
seamless, all they may notice is that a new team
begins working with them.
“Medicare is pretty strict,” says Ms. Poggi, “about
the number of days they let you stay in an acute care
setting. We see a lot of people coming back from
hospitalization in Boston who just aren’t ready to
go home. With this program, they don’t have to go
into a facility off-Island. They can come to Martha’s
Vineyard Hospital for rehab and some discharge
planning. The focus, once the acute medical
problem has been solved, becomes to rehabilitate
the patient, to get them back to their prior level of
functioning and to get them back home again.”
The Hospital has a skilled team of nurses who
can help with everything from physical and
occupational therapy after hip and knee surgeries
to the sort of patient training and education that
are so important after strokes, heart attacks,
colostomies and the diagnosis of diabetes.
Before the Hospital won federal designation as a
critical access health care facility in 2002, this sort
of service could be offered only at Windemere, but
now the Hospital can also provide for transitional
care, as needed. “The Windemere staff also pitches
in to help,” Ms. Poggi says, “when their skills are
needed. We do work collaboratively. It’s wonderful
to have all the resources of the Windemere staff just
next door.”
Ms. Poggi concludes: “This whole program is
geared toward getting Vineyarders back on the
Island and serving as a stepping-stone before they go
home. We’ve had many patients tell us this
program is wonderful, because it brought them back
to the Island where they could have the
support of their friends and their families. And some
of them have caregivers at home, which means we can
bring the caregivers in and do training with them.”
