Dr. D'liese Melendrez, Principal
Principal’s Message:
As a Three A’s School, we continue to
strive for excellence in Academics, Arts
and Athletics. Our highly qualified staff,
supportive parents and community, and
our dedicated students make up the great
team that continues to raise the bar. We
thank you for your partnership in this vision.
Our all-school musical, Footloose, received rave reviews. It was fun to watch
the magic take place as the students, staff,
parents and community came together to
create a memorable performance for
packed audiences. Junior, Mia Colorado’s design was selected as the Imagination Celebration of the Arts poster. We
are proud that on National Signing Day –
twenty-eight of the Charger athletes
signed with prestigious colleges and universities. Almost half of the sophomore
class will be taking The Plan in March in
order to prepare for the college entrance
test, the ACT. Currently, we are preparing for a variety of exams to help students
on the journey to a successful career.
As a staff we continue to focus on pushing our students with rigorous and relevant curriculum to be “college and career
ready” when they graduate. In light of
this challenge, we have implemented
many support systems to help your child

TESTING 1...2….3
All 11th graders have taken the Early Assessment Placement Essay Test in their English classes. All 11th graders
will be taking the English multiple choice test. In addition those 11th graders in Algebra 2 or higher math classes
will be taking an EAP math test. These tests measure college readiness and will be used by the California State
Universities and University of California to determine the need for remedial classes prior to admission. The English test will be given on the morning of May 18th and the math test on the 19th. Click here for more information.
11th graders will also take the Smarter Balanced Field Test on April 24-30. Juniors can review the practice test
available to learn more about the format of this test. Click here for the Smarter Balanced Practice Test so that students may become familiar with the test. Have your 11th grader select “Student Interface Practice Training” (the
green box with the bicycle on the right—see below) The site will ask for a Student ID and password, but if you
continue to hit enter it will default to “Guest” and this will allow them to move forward. Select grade level and
select English or Math tests to practice with.
All 10th graders are still required to take the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) life science test. This test will be given
on the afternoon of May 20th.

Regional Occupational Program
As baby boomer parents, we can’t
compare the experience we had
choosing our careers to the experiences of our children who are looking at potential careers of their own.
We graduated from school in a relatively orderly, secure and predictable
marketplace.
Changing technology, corporate restructuring and the proliferation of
new work opportunities are making
your son or daughter’s career decisions less predictable. The key,
however, is to encourage your kids
to constantly review their interests
and discover new opportunities.

the students of Edison High School. Help make our
goal a reality by donating today.
In 2013, California adopted a new formula for deciding
how much money each school district gets, called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). This new formula shifts the decision making to the individual school
district with flexibility for local communities to decide
how to best use resources. Between March and June 2014,
school districts must engage their parents and communities
and adopt a Local Control and Accountability Plan
(LCAP). The initial plan will cover three years, but must
be updated annually by the district.
Lastly, we are beginning to compile our family directory for next school year. The directory includes both
academic and event calendars, bell schedules and pertinent information for students and their families. The
directory also includes contact information for students, faculty and booster organizations. Publication
of your family's information is voluntary and there is
NO charge for this service. If you have had a change
of address or phone number since last year please
email me so we can make the change in our records. Or if you missed being included last year,
email me your student's first and last name, grade,
address and/or phone number. This is such a helpful
tool when it comes to those group projects! The business directory section recognizes organizations which
support Edison High School and encourages the patronage of our students and families please contact me
if you'd like to have your business added to the list.
What can parents do now? Come to a PTSA meeting and
get the latest information regarding LCFF and LCAP from
our knowledgeable Advocacy Chair, Shari Kowalke. Parents can also visit www.capta.org and click on LCFF and
LCAP: How Does it Affect Me? Looking for information
specific to our school district? Go to the Huntington
Beach Union High School District website at
www.hbuhsd.edu to read Assistant Superintendant Dr.
Don Austin's Article, Working Together on LCAP.
The LCFF and LCAP provide a great opportunity for parents to engage in the decisions that impact their children
and schools.

Winter Sports
Congratulations to all the winter sports for their outstanding showing in league and for
qualifying for CIF playoffs. Both the Boys and Girls Soccer teams won the Sunset
League while the Boys Basketball team finished second and the Girls Water Polo team
finished third to automatically qualify for the playoffs. The Girls Basketball team earned
an at large entry into the playoffs while the Wrestling team sent 11 athletes to CIF Individuals. The Boys Soccer and Boys Basketball teams advanced to the quarterfinals,
while the Girls Soccer team advanced to finals and regionals (first time in EHS history).
All of this following a fall season where 7 of 8 sports made the CIF playoffs, shows the
outstanding athletes here at Edison. Go Chargers!

ABC Supports Academics
Thank you to all the great volunteers this year who have made our Student Store so successful! If you’re interested in becoming involved and doing a 1 hour shift once a week or every other week please contact her at [email protected]. This is a great way to get to know the kids and meet new parents. Oh, and Grandparents are
Welcome too! The Student Store has an awesome selection of EHS sweatshirts, shirts, hats and other spirit items.
We get new items all the time, come by and check them out.
ABC Student Recognition Night will be held on Tuesday, April 1st, 7:00 in the EHS Gym. Students are chosen
by their teachers for significant success in learning during the 1st semester including great improvement in academic work, outstanding effort, exceptional help to other students or other demonstrations that the student is worthy of recognition. Kids who may not be recognized in other venues can be chosen here and their achievements
and efforts recognized. Invitations to the families of selected will be mailed mid-March.
ABC has been busy meeting teacher’s requests for materials and registrations. We recently funded a 1-year
membership in the Math Association of America which will provide professional development and discounts for
the EHS Math Department. We also funded the 2014 USA Biology Olympiad at the request of the EHS Science
Department which promotes excellence and competition in Biology. ABC has been there for these and other departments to meet the needs when state education funding falls short and this is all made possible through your
generous donations, your ABC Membership dues and your Student Store purchases.
Thanks again to all those who make ABC possible.

STEM -Innovation Lab
Edison is moving forward
with the development of a
STEM program. STEM
(science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is
the area where most of the
new jobs will be created in
the 21st Century. Edison was the recipient of a Specialized Secondary Program planning grant to develop
new classes that focus on STEM areas and to develop
modules that bring more project based activities into
the existing science classes. The focus of the two new
courses will be environmental science and engineering. This grant will provide teachers time to plan and
develop the curriculum. The goal of these classes and
modules is to allow students to participate in project
based activities based on real life experiences. The
objective is to encourage more students to pursue careers in STEM related fields. To accomplish this, the
space in the empty auto
shop will be converted
into the Edison Innovation Lab. We are seeking
grants and donations to
expand the program to
include solar and wind
power generation systems, biofuel generation projects, and a robotics program. The Innovation Lab will be modeled after the
Maker Movement where students will be allowed to
experiment and try out both assigned projects and
ideas of their own. Currently a tank system for raising
White Sea Bass is being assembled in the Lab and we
are making space for our robotics club.

Sports Physicals May 17
Physicals will be held on Saturday May 17 10am to
2pm. Cost is $30 with checks made out to Edison High
School. Athletes MUST use our district physical form
for any physical given. We will also offer as part of our
physical the special ECG heart screening from the Sparkling Angels Charity. All of this information can be
downloaded from the athletic information web site
along with the consent form. Remember physicals are
only good for one calendar year. Any incoming freshman who plans to attend a summer camp must get a
physical before the camp.
If you are interested in helping Edison with this program there are several ways to do so. We are looking
for gently used hand tools (hammers, saws, drills, etc.)
for the students to use
when building their
projects. If you have
expertise in a STEM
area and are interested
in serving on our advisory board we would
like to talk with you.
And of course a monetary donation would always be
appreciated. For additional information, contact Mr.
Rod Raschke at [email protected].
Also, we are looking for volunteers to help on May 17
especially Doctors and Nurses. Anyone who is interested should contact Holly Jackson at
x4030 or [email protected].
This is a great fundraiser for athletics that
provides low cost physicals for our students.
