Buckinghamshire New University is a friendly
community located on the western outskirts of
London, with a campus in the modern and
expanding market town of High Wycombe. It’s a
place with masses of attractions and activities
for you to explore, but also somewhere you can
really feel at home.

where are we?
22-25
We’re completely redeveloping our High
Wycombe Campus, constructing a new learning
resources centre, to be known as the Gateway,
and refurbishing our other buildings with brand
new, state-of-the-art facilities. Phase one of this
project alone is costing around £60 million, and
if you join us in September 2009, you’ll be able
to benefit from these exciting changes.
By this time, all of our courses (except for
Nursing) will be delivered at the High Wycombe
Campus.

Bucks financial support
scheme in partnership with
Bucks Students’ Union
FREE entertainments and events
FREE recreational activities
What? Tickets for all Students’ Union gigs,
club nights, comedy, theme parties and
events will be totally free for Bucks
students. With the extra funding from the
University, the Union can promote a new,
wider range of improved quality events, as
well as keeping the things that Bucks
students already enjoy!
What? A full programme of activities
throughout the year as diverse as cooking
lessons, motor mechanics, salsa classes,
museum trips, table tennis, poetry reading
and pot-holing, absolutely free to Bucks
students and accessible to all.
Why? We believe an active and varied social
life is a key ingredient in becoming a
well-rounded graduate. Mixing with new
people and sharing new experiences is
important. No other university in the country
supports their students’ social activities to
this extent.
FREE sports
Generous cash bursary
At Bucks we believe that no student who could benefit from higher
education should be deterred from applying simply because of the
cost. Nearly all Bucks students benefit from this – check our website
to see if you do too!
A student experience like no other
In addition to the cash element of our financial support scheme, the
University is investing a further £1 million per year from the money
raised by student fees into new initiatives that directly benefit you.
What? Bucks students will play nearly 30
different sports at a competitive level without
any charge. We pay for your kit and your
match fees, we get you to the matches and
we pay for coaches for your teams so that
you can play for free. At other universities
this could cost you hundreds of pounds!
Why? We believe in the benefits of a healthy
mind and body, and that the camaraderie
and leadership skills gained while
representing the University are things that
will stay with you long after you graduate.
Why? We believe that a well-planned
programme of taster sessions, trips, lessons
and showcases will give our students the
opportunity to gain new experiences and try
a range of new activities that may be
unavailable to them elsewhere.
PAID student reps and an enhanced
Student Rep scheme
What? Our aim is to develop the Student
Rep scheme by rewarding reps for their hard
work and supporting proper training.
Why? To ensure your voice as a student at
Bucks will be heard and we can fully support
you throughout your time at University. This
funding will mean the network of students
representing your views, and acting on your
concerns, will be more effective than ever
before.
PLUS additional faculty support close to
the learning experience
What? Materials, travel, external events that
are closely linked to fields of study.
Why? To ensure our students get the best
out of their learning experience – in most
universities you would have to find the
money yourself!
Working closely with our Students’ Union and our three faculties, we
have identified exceptional and unusual ways to help you achieve
the best possible degree award, improve your employability and
provide you with a student experience like no other. These include:

meet your
students’ union
Bucks Students’ Union is a fully independent body, run
by students for students. While you’re here, you can join
our societies and sports clubs, enjoy yourself in our bars
and nightclub, eat in our cafés, come to us for advice and
rely on us to represent you so that your views are heard.
We’re your organisation,
just waiting for you to join in
If you want to play an active part in your
Union, there are loads of opportunities for
new students to get involved. Get a job in
one of our bars or cafés, become a club
night promoter or help shape the direction
of our events by applying to sit on the
Executive Committee.
We’ll represent you
Every year, you’ll be invited to elect three
full-time officers to run the Union, to represent
students within the University, and to liaise
with the NUS (National Union of Students).
We passionately believe that you have rights,
you have opinions, and you have a voice.
The collective opinion of students should
never be underestimated; by working
together, we can make things happen.
With Student Representatives at all levels
in the University, we have over 150 people
actively working towards making the
university experience at Bucks the best
4
it can be. If you become a Student Rep
yourself, it will give you the chance to
become fully involved in University life,
and to really make a difference.
We’ll spark your interest
Whatever you’re into – from dance to
drama, from horse riding to hockey – you’ll
discover someone else who shares the
same interests as you at University. Here at
Bucks Students’ Union, we’ll help you meet
more like-minded people through our wide
variety of sports clubs and societies. If your
ideal society doesn’t already exist, we can
help you set it up. There’s a list of current clubs
and societies on bucksstudent.com
We’ll entertain you
When it comes to a good night out, you’ll
be spoilt for choice. From wow-factor
headliners at the Summer Ball to quality club
nights, from top bands and chart acts to
nationally renowned DJs, we run events to
appeal to every musical taste.
The Venue, comprising The White Room and
The Lounge, is a purpose-built, 800-capacity
club and bar in the centre of our High Wycombe
Campus. Decked out with plasma screens,
video games, pool tables and free internet
access, it provides an excellent café service
by day and a state-of-the-art clubbing
experience by night. Designed by the team
who refurbished the Ministry of Sound, The
White Room is undoubtedly the best
entertainment venue in the local area.
Host to some of the biggest names
on the live circuit, it can also boast an
enviable roll-call of guest DJs.
We’ll take you places
Fancy getting muddy at the Glastonbury
Festival, or need to pick up a new lamp
at IKEA? The Union organises at least
one great value trip every academic
week. There’s an online noticeboard to
post suggestions for future trips. So,
where do you want to go?
We’ll save you money
As a member of Bucks Students’ Union,
you’ll get discounts in a range of leisure,
retail and art establishments all over the
country. Keep your eyes peeled for
discounts and don’t forget to show
your NUS card.

about town
With all the excitement of Eden on your doorstep,
it’s easy to forget that High Wycombe itself is
bustling with shops, bars, clubs, restaurants and a
thriving theatre. The town boasts many specialist
retailers and a thrice-weekly market. The delights
of the beautiful Chilterns countryside – as well as
the river Thames at Marlow – should not be
overlooked. Students are also moments from two
attractive open spaces, the Rye and Hughenden
Park.
Local cultural attractions are many and varied and
include the Chiltern Open Air Museum, Bekonscot
Model Village, Milton’s Cottage – where Paradise Lost
was written – Hughenden Manor, home of Victorian
prime-minister, Benjamin Disraeli, and the Hellfire
Caves, meeting place of the infamous Hellfire Club.
Theatre and film-goers are also well catered for. High
Wycombe is the location of the Swan Theatre, one of
the leading theatres in the South East, and the Town
Hall, popular for its comedy nights, as well as Empire,
a six-screen digital cinema complex.

our sports strategy
Our vision for sport is to be renowned within the region
for our support of sport through academic studies,
individual participation and achievement, and through
engagement with our community and our partners.
Formally launched in 2008, our sports
strategy provides a framework for planning
and developing sport at Buckinghamshire
New University.
Strong partnerships with local clubs, including
London Wasps and Wycombe Wanderers, give
students the opportunity to play, coach and
spectate at all levels of sport.
In 2009, Buckinghamshire New University will
bring the majority of its facilities and student
population onto one town centre site. A new
state-of-the-art complex will be built offering a
range of new sports facilities including a sports
hall, gym, human performance laboratory,
treatment rooms and a dance studio. The
human performance laboratory will be
accredited by the British Association of Sport
and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and equipped
to record and assess many human physiological
responses. It will be used for a variety of
purposes from the assessment of fitness, to the
search for optimum athletic performance. The
laboratory will provide a sports science support
service to any performer who feels they would
benefit from physiological assessments, advice
on appropriate training methods, and
preparation for competition, nutritional and
dietary analysis or sports psychology support.
Thanks to a unique partnership with the
University, Bucks Students’ Union allows Bucks
students to play sport for free whilst they study.
Bucks students receive an impressive package
of benefits that includes free access to sports
and recreational activities and covers the costs
associated with over 20 different sports played
competitively at the
University, including
insurance, kit
and match
fees.
17
where will you
feel at home?
One of the best aspects of becoming a student at Bucks is the
opportunity to live independently. Living away from home can
be fun but it can also take a little getting used to. The easiest
way to set about adapting to this new way of life is to live in
halls of residence and accommodation provided by Bucks.
High Wycombe has a friendly, social
atmosphere, excellent facilities and plenty
going on. Bucks has an Accommodation
Service which aims to find all new students
suitable accommodation, whether that be in
halls of residence, the Head Tenancy
Scheme (HTS) or private accommodation.
The University prides itself on providing an
excellent student experience, and
accommodation is a key factor; all of our
accommodation is of a high standard, safe,
secure and value for money.
Halls of residence
From September 2009 the University will have
approximately 650 single study bedrooms in self
catering halls of residence, spread across two
sites. All rents are fully inclusive of bills. For
further information on current rent costs and
other accommodation details, please visit our
website at: bucks.ac.uk/accommodation
18
Brook Street Halls
Around 400 first year students live in mixed
groups in a lively and energetic atmosphere.
The halls are located in the centre of High
Wycombe, a few minutes walk from the town
centre amenities and the University campus.
Flats have between five and ten study
bedrooms each and all the rooms are fully webenabled.
Student Village
We are excited to announce that, as part of our
ambitious redevelopment plans, we are
currently building brand new, state-of-the-art,
en-suite student rooms in High Wycombe.
This new accommodation is located just five
minutes walk from the town centre.
All our halls accommodation is close to the
University campus, reasonably priced and has
internet access.
The Head Tenancy Scheme
This is University managed accommodation.
Properties within the HTS are rented by the
University from private individuals, companies
or housing associations, meaning that the
University is your landlord.
This gives you the opportunity to live more
independently but with support available from
the Accommodation Service. They will support
students through lifestyle and relationship
problems and rent payment difficulties, and
safeguard against many of the other pitfalls that
could present themselves in private
accommodation.
The University manages several different types
of accommodation, from two to six bedroom
properties to larger, licensed, Houses of Multiple
Occupation (HMOs). If you are looking for a
halls experience then the HMOs are a good
alternative, with larger numbers of students and
a similar community spirit.
Meet and greet days
Meet and greet days are held during July and
August for students who wish to live in a head
tenancy property, private accommodation, or
who are unable to gain a place in halls. It is a
great opportunity to meet other students, view
potential properties and to organise
accommodation.
As ever – our friendly staff will be on hand and
will do all they can to assist in finding every
student suitable accommodation. Details and
dates of meet and greet days will appear on the
Bucks website.
