10 YEARS
THANK YOU
EDWIN
OUTWATER!
“The time I have spent as Music Director
of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony
has been one of the highlights of my life.
Over ten years, we have worked hard to
create an orchestra for the 21st Century,
maintaining the beautiful and glorious
tradition of classical music and presenting
it in ways that connect with more people
than ever before. I’m so grateful that I’ve
had such strong support from the musicians,
administration, board, and audience
to make our dreams a reality. I can’t
wait to see and hear what’s next for
this amazing orchestra, but for
now, let’s celebrate!”

1 | RACHMANINOFF
& TCHAIKOVSKY
The KWS season opens with
Mason Bates’ innovative
Mothership, combining the
sound of the full orchestra with
pulsing electronica and surprise
soloists from far outside the box.
KWS favourite Natasha
Paremski returns to play
Rachmaninoff ’s most
challenging and thrilling
concerto. Tchaikovsky’s fateful
Fourth Symphony, full of
dazzling solo and ensemble
moments for the orchestra,
closes this rousing and exciting
opening program.
2 | EDWIN’S FINAL
BEETHOVEN
Edwin Outwater’s ten-year
journey through all nine
Beethoven symphonies with the
KWS concludes with the first
he ever conducted and one very
dear to his heart, Symphony No. 2.
Korngold, equally known for his
lush and romantic orchestral
music and film scores, is in
the spotlight as Concertmaster
Bénédicte Lauzière plays his
gorgeous Violin Concerto.
Rounding out the program
are the familiar melodies and
ecstasies of Liszt’s Second
Hungarian Rhapsody; the KWS
plays the spectacular orchestral
version.

Outwater’s favourite composers,

memorable performances of

conducts Sibelius’ Seventh
Symphony, a work that is
at once compact and epic.
Making his KWS debut playing
Sibelius’ Violin Concerto,
Benjamin Beilman is one of the
fastest rising young violinists in
the world. The program begins
with Mozart’s 25th Symphony,

intimate orchestral works.
Young Canadian composer
Riho Esko Maimets writes a

final concert as Music Director
of the Kitchener-Waterloo
Symphony. Featuring the
combined forces of the Grand

famed Huddersfield Choral
Society from the United
Kingdom, John Adams’
Harmonium is a stunning

More INFO
Two works full of humour
and delight anchor this
colourful program conducted
by Christopher Rountree.
Haydn’s 102nd Symphony
is one of his greatest, full of
witty twists and turns and
startling orchestrations. Farina’s
Capriccio Stravagante is a rarely
heard work for strings, full
of eccentricity and humour.
Between these two works is
Ravel’s miniature masterpiece,
a tribute to the Baroque master
Couperin, as well as his friends
whom he lost in World War I.
2 | AN EVENING IN
PRAGUE
A tribute to the great city of
Prague, this incredible concert
features works by three great
Czech composers, Zelenka,
Smetana and Dvořák, all written
in the city itself. Included
is Dvořák’s Serenade for
Strings, one of his most popular
orchestral works and composed
in just two weeks! Prague was
on Mozart’s mind as he wrote
Eine kleine Nachtmusik. He
was also composing his opera
Don Giovanni, which would
soon premiere there. Like the
opera, it is one of Mozart’s
most beloved works.

the KWS through Stravinksy’s
playful suite based on the
commedia dell’arte, and Vivaldi’s
virtuosic and dramatic La Follia.
4 | BACH AND VIVALDI
J.S. Bach’s instrumental
writing style was significantly
influenced by Vivaldi’s concertos.
Join violinist Aisslinn Nosky of
Tafelmusik and the KWS’ own
James Mason as they explore
the connections between these
two titans of Baroque music.
The program features the
“Summer” movement from
Vivaldi’s most famous work,
The Four Seasons, along with
intricate and delightful works
by Bach, Geminiani and Handel.
