Dear prospective student,
The beginning of your studies marks the beginning of a new chapter in your life.
You are probably moving away from home, coming to a new city, meeting new
people and unfortunately finding yourself confronted with the bureaucratic jungle
of university. The National Union of Students at the University of Graz (ÖH Uni
Graz) has prepared this leaflet in order to simplify the first steps of your studies.
In the leaflet you will find information about getting started with your studies,
about financial aid, tuition fees and much more. Should you need more detailed
information about specific topics you can refer to the collection of additional links
or the detailed list of people and institutions you can direct your questions to.
We hope this information will help you in the initial phase of your student life and wish you
lots of fun and success in your studies!

First steps at Uni Graz – ÖH Uni Graz 2015/16
Important Terms
Curriculum: The curriculum determines the structure and contents of each individual degree
course. You can consult it to find out about the quantity and kinds of exams which you will
have to complete in the course of your studies.
ECTS (European Credit Transfer System): The international system used for assessing the
workload and timeframe of lectures. One ECTS credit corresponds to 25 real time work hours
(includes lecture time and individual study time). The workload for any degree course is comprised of 60 ECTS credits per academic year
Consecutive Master’s Degree: The word consecutive is derived from the Latin word consecutio, which means „succession“. Bachelor and master programs are connected by discipline
and are building on each other regarding their content.
LV (abbreviation of the German word “Lehrveranstaltung“ = “course”): What is called subject
in school is called course at university. LV is a cover term for lectures, seminars and all other
types of courses you will attend during your studies.
Matriculation Number: Your personal identification number at university which you can use
for registering anywhere, even if you change to another university. You only get one matriculation number in your life.
ÖH (abbreviation of German “Österreichische HochschülerInnenschaft“ = The National Union
of Students): Your representatives on all levels (program, faculty, university and federal representation), who advocate for your rights.
OL: Orienting lecture, see page 18.
StEOP (abbreviation of German “Studieneingangs- und Orientierungsphase“ = Studies Induction and Orientation Stage): orientating initial stage of all degree courses according to the
Austrian university act.
StV: (abbreviation of German “Studienvertretung“): Students of all programs elect representatives for their degree course every two years, who advocate for student’s interests and can
answer questions regarding your degree program.
Tutorial: Course or event accompanying a regular lecture.
UGO: UniGrazOnline. The online system of the university through which you can register for
lectures, among other things. online.uni-graz.at, see page 14.

Counseling for high school graduates
and freshmen
Are you wondering what your options are after graduating high school? Studying, but what?
Or do you already know what you want to study but don’t know what your chosen degree
program entails exactly? The ÖH Uni Graz High school graduate counseling (MatBe) helps
in both cases!
The MatBe is a project in cooperation with the other Student’s Unions of Styria and is carried
out in collaboration with the ÖH federal representation. We organize many events with a
broad spectrum of counseling services for you, where you can get tips and information about
your desired prospective degree program or your current degree program. All of our counseling sessions are free of charge!
You would like to study, but what?
In the week before the Styrian semester break, the ÖH holds a student’s counseling fair at the
University of Graz. At the fair, you have access to all available possibilities of getting comprehensive personal counseling.
You have the choice: students will inform you about any degree programs available at all
Styrian universities and answer your questions about beginning your studies. In addition to
leaflets, which offer an overview of the individual degree program structure, the counseling
teams will provide complementary information about your individual concerns. Along with
representatives of the universities of Graz, representatives of Campus02 and the FH Joanneum
(universities of applied sciences) will be present at the fair. Additionally, you can attend a
presentation on general information about study options in Styria. This presentation will not
only give you an overview of the many available degrees but also of employment opportunities as well as social aspects of studying.
In addition to counselors from the student’s union, external (further) education institutions
will send representatives who will be happy to give you guidance: the info booth of the AMS
(Austrian job center) will offer a career interest test and provide information about current
employment opportunities. The board of financial aid will give information about available
financial support options. Many colleges will also be represented and give information about
their education options
Interested in a “Uni Tryout“ („Studieren Probieren“)?
Accompanied by a student, pupils have the opportunity of visiting a real lecture at a university, university of applied sciences or university of teacher education of their choice and ask
questions about student life directly afterwards. This way, you will get a realistic insight into

student life and have a first overview of the respective campus. You will get more details
about degree program contents in the lectures and the personal talk with your chaperone.
The „Uni Tryout“ program (“Studieren Probieren“) is organized through an online registration
for your desired date. All information about the services and contact details are available on

research?
It’s not always easy to keep track of the broad spectrum of study opportunities. Make it

Registering at University
Choosing your degree program
A complete list of all degree programs offered at the University of Graz is available on the
university’s website: bit.ly/studienang.
For an overview of all degree programs available at all Austrian universities go to
www.studienplattform.at.
If you are not sure what you want to study yet, you can consult the ÖH or the board of representatives for individual degree programs for personal counseling!
Admission requirements
In order to register as a regular student at Uni Graz, you are required to have graduated
high school, passed you’re a-levels or a university entrance exam or provide proof of any
relevant equivalent.
However, for some degree programs, there are additional admission requirements (see also:
bit.ly/zugabe_unigraz):
 Admission examinations: the degree programs Business administration, Biology, Molecular biology, Pharmaceutics, Psychology and Economics as well as all teacher education
programs are access restricted (requiring an admission exam in spring/summer)!
 Complementary examinations Latin/Greek/Biology: some degree programs only accept students who have taken courses in e.g. Latin, Greek or
Biology and Environmental sciences to a sufficient extend or have taken
A-levels in them. In case you don’t have proof of this, you are required to
pass a complementary examination before you begin your studies.
 Qualifying examination for Sports science: students who would like to enroll for a
bachelor’s degree course at the institute for sports science must pass a qualifying
examination for assessment of physical and motoric eligibility before enrolling.
 Language tests: bachelor’s degree programs at the institute for Romance studies,
Slavic studies and theoretical and applied Translation studies require language tests
for proof of sufficient language skills. Students applying for a degree in English and
American studies are required to take a Placement Test. It differs from the other language tests insofar as it is an examination specific to the degree program and must
be passed at the beginning of your studies according to the model curriculum.
Enrollment at Uni Graz
When you first register for a degree program at Uni Graz, you have to complete an online data
registration on the university’s website prior to enrolment. In the course of the registration,
you will be assigned a date for your in-person registration at the Academic Affairs Office.

Registration is possible during the general registration period:
 Winter semester 2016/17: July 11 - September 5, 2016
 Summer semester 2017: January 9 - February 5, 2017
Registration during the extended deadline period (“Nachfrist”) (until November 30, 2016
for the winter semester/ April 30, 2017 for the summer semester) is only possible in regulated exceptional cases. Registering for a consecutive master’s degree program (except for
the master’s degree in Psychology which requires an admission examination taking place
only in fall) are also possible outside of the official registration periods.
The following original documents are required for registration:
 Certificate of eligibility for university entrance (A-levels, high school
diploma, international baccalaureate or equivalent)
 Passport or certificate of citizenship in combination with an official photo ID
 Public health insurance card/ social security number (e-card)
 Latin examination certificate (if required: complementary examination certificates)
 For transfer students: proof of matriculation number (student ID
card), proof of de-registration from former university or proof of continuation of studies at the other university (if available!)

ÖH-Membership Fee and Tuition Fees
All students are required to pay a membership fee for the ÖH. Additionally, some students
have to pay tuition fees. The ÖH membership fee and potential tuition fees must be paid by
the end of the general registration period (consult dates and deadlines section of the leaflet
for specific dates), otherwise you will be de-registered! There is an extended deadline period
(“Nachfrist”), however, fees payed in the extended deadline period are increased by 10%
(applies to tuition fees only).
ÖH Membership Fee
The ÖH Membership Fee is currently € 19,20 per semester. The fee is constantly adjusted to
inflation, therefore it may increase. All students must pay the fee in order to be registered at
university. You will automatically be registered for a new semester as soon as you have paid
the ÖH Membership Fee. If you fall into the category of students who have to pay tuition
fees, you have to pay both the membership fee and the tuition fees to be registered for a new
semester.
Why do I have to pay?
By paying the fee, you are automatically a member of the ÖH, the Austrian Student’s Union.
The ÖH is your representation at the university and in other political matters and your go-to
contact for questions and issues concerning your studies.
The ÖH is made up of the boards of representatives of all the degree programs, the faculty
representatives, the university representatives and the federal representatives in Vienna. Committed students advocate for your interests on all levels. This way, you get access to services
like counseling for study matters and financial aid as well as support in legal matters concerning studying and help in case of issues with academic staff.
Student representatives are also involved in the various committees of the university, where
they assure that the student’s point of view is being heard. By paying the ÖH membership fee,
you are also entitled to vote in the ÖH elections, which are held every two years (the next
elections are in spring 2017).
How can I pay?
You will receive a payment slip from the university upon first registration. After the first
semester, the university doesn’t send out payment slips. The university‘s account data and
the amount payable for the semester can be found on UniGrazOnline (see “UGO” section
of the leaflet) in the “Tuition Fees” section (“Studienbeitragsstatus“).
Important note: don’t forget to include your customer number which guarantees that
your payment can unmistakably be attributed to you!

Tuition Fees
Since January 2013, Austria has reintroduced nationwide regulations for tuition fees, which
are designed differently for different groups of students. This section gives a short overview of
the regulations; further information can be found at studiengebuehren.oehunigraz.at.
AUT & EEA & CH:
Austrian citizens as well as students from the European Economic Area (including Switzerland) are only required to pay tuition fees if they exceed the minimum semester count of their
respective degree program plus two additional tolerance semesters. For a Bachelor’s degree
program with a minimum time of 6 semesters, this means that tuition fees will be charged
from the 9th semester onwards. For a Master’s degree program with 4 semesters of minimum
time, tuition fees are charged from the 7th semester on.
Tuition fees due after these tolerance periods are currently at € 363.36 per semester (when
payed within the extended deadline period, the amount is increased by 10%). Additionally,
there are a number of exceptions: receiving financial aid, employment, pregnancy, illness,
childcare, disability, military- or compulsory community service, semester abroad and administrative leave will affect the amount of your tuition fees. For further information go to:

Non-EEA:
The situation for non-EEA students is a little more complicated. Generally, tuition fees for nonEEA students are double the amount mentioned above, which is € 726.72 per semester (when
paid within the extended deadline period, the amount is also increased by 10%). Students
from countries listed in attachment 3 (bit.ly/stuge_stubeiv) of the Austrian tuition fees act
(StuBeiV) do not have to pay any tuition fees. Some groups of students are subject to the same
regulations applicable to Austrian students (see: bit.ly/studal).
Students from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldavia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and Belarus also have the possibility of getting tuition fees refunded if
they have earned a minimum of 8 semester hours or 12 ECTS credits within the respective

External students, who only complete one of the university’s training courses or preparation
courses (e.g. to learn German) are exempt from paying tuition fees and are only charged for
the individual course and the ÖH membership fee.

UNIGRAZCARD
The UNIGRAZCARD is the official student identification card of the University of Graz. The ID
card has multiple functions:
 Identification for students, important for exams to control the student’s identity.
 Library membership card needed for borrowing books and keys
for the lockers. Information on using the UNIGRAZCARD as a library membership card can be found on: bit.ly/unibib
 Canteen discounts provided by the ÖH, for info, see: bit.ly/mensastempel
The UNIGRAZCARD must be renewed regularly. You can renew the card at the service points
on campus.

UGOnline/Registration for Courses
UNIGRAZonline (UGO) is a comprehensive information management system of the University
of Graz. Every student gets the access data to their personal account in the system upon
registering at the university. The UGO homepage address is: online.uni-graz.at. The system
will be your companion throughout your time at university since you will be taking care
of virtually all organizational matters online after you’ve first registered at the university.
First Login
Upon first registration at Uni Graz, you will receive a PIN code at the Academic Affairs Office.
You will have to enter the code when you first sign up for the system online. Should you
lose your PIN code or forget your password, you can get a new PIN, either at the Academic Affairs Office or the UNI-IT helpdesk. Here’s how to use the PIN code: on the website
online.uni-graz.at, click on the key symbol on the top right side of the screen. In the lower half
of the next screen, click on “enter your PIN code here“. Enter your PIN, matriculation number
and date of birth and press “save“. After that, you can choose your personal password. With
your username, which is composed of the first two digits of your matriculation number followed by a combination of your first – and last name, and your chosen password, you can then
log on to your account directly on the homepage. After logging in successfully, your “business
card/workplace“ will appear on the screen. From here, you can access various functions of
UNIGRAZonline, the most important of which are:








Course and exam registration
Managing and checking course and exam dates
Editing your personal data and settings (e.g. the e-mail forwarding service settings)
Information like place, time, content and name of the instructor for all of your
courses and an integrated search function which searches courses according to
more criteria like your curriculum, the name of the instructor, institute or rooms
Calendar function (automatically enters all of the course and exam dates you are registered
for)
Accreditation/recognition of exams end courses directly in the system
Access to printable versions of certificates/reports, registration documents and the
form sheet for your public transport card (Holding Graz public transport services)
Integrated Webmail account with your personal address:

Registering for Courses and Exams
Registration for courses and exams is also done through your UGO business card/workplace.
Click on the “course registration” button in the “studies” window. You can now look for your
course through the search function (you can also search by institute, instructor or curriculum). Once you found the right course, click on it. You can now see information on the chosen
course like contents and course times. On the top right side of the page, you will find the
“course registration” button. It will take you directly to the confirmation page for registration
or de-registration respectively. You will also see the deadline periods for registration or deregistration. For a list of all courses you will need for your degree program, you can use the
“search” function and search for your respective degree program. This will show you a list of
compulsory courses you can register for by clicking on their titles, which will take you to the
info and registration page.
The registration period, as well as registration procedures for the winter semester 2016/17
and the summer semester 2017 are different for every institute and study discipline. They are
shown when you log on to UNIGRAZonline.
You generally have to register for all courses you want to visit which have so-called continuous assessment (Course+practical course, courses, proseminars, seminars, etc.). Registration for regular courses (VO) is not compulsory but recommended because it will guarantee
that you receive relevant information about the course such as room location, teacher evaluation, access to provided studying material or session cancellations. The online systems of
the University of Technology and the University of Music and Performing Arts are structured
in the same way as UGO and are used for the same purposes, which is especially convenient
for students who are studying in multiple degree programs or are studying for a teacher’s
diploma at more than one university in Graz.
Further information and help
Further functions of the UNIGRAZonline system are mostly self-explanatory. Additionally,
there is a “help” button on the top right side of the screen where you can find help concerning the section of the page which you are currently on. There is also a general info page for
UNIGRAZonline: unigrazonline.uni-graz.at

Online Learning Platforms
Instructors will often provide additional information for students such as PowerPoint presentations or studying material. In order to save on printing and copying costs, these materials
will usually be uploaded to an online learning platform, which students of the respective

course have access to (this means you must be registered for the course on UGO). The sole
remaining plattform in use is moodle (moodle.uni-graz.at). Using moodle is more or less
self-explanatory. Instructors will also give specific information on how to use the platforms,
especially in the first few semesters. If they don’t, do not hesitate to ask them for a thorough
explanation!
How To: Time Schedule
One of the most important and most challenging tasks for students at the beginning of each
semester is the planning of their individual time schedules. To get an overview of what your
schedule should look like, you can check the sample curricula provided on your institute’s
website or on UGO. Of course you will not be forced to stick to the sample curricula’s suggestions but they serve as a good template. It is always helpful to take a look at the general
curriculum for your degree program because you have to consider the hierarchy of requirements for some courses. Once you have decided which courses you want to complete in the
semester, just search for them on UGO and register.
Overlappings
At this point, you will notice that courses you have chosen may overlap and you have to
set priorities. If your courses happen to overlap, you have to decide which course is more
important for you, if you can do it the following semester or if it is a prerequisite for another
course you wanted to take in the next semester. Sometimes you will have a choice of different
groups for one course and can thereby avoid overlapping. In severe cases, for example if you
absolutely have to take two overlapping courses in order to continue your studies, you should
contact the instructors or the board of representatives of your degree program. If you need
some filler courses, you can still always cover your free electives. What’s important is that you
check course times on UGO in time so that you know when to be where and you don’t start
dragging behind at the beginning of the semester already.
Waiting List
It is the case in many degree programs that students are put on a waiting list when registering
for courses with continuous assessment. Confirmed places on the courses are then assigned
shortly before the beginning of the semester and the criteria for placement is different for
different institutes. If you are unsure which courses you will get a place in, simply sign up for
more than one – you can always deregister and your place will be assigned to another student
from the waiting list. If you end up on the waiting list after the confirmed places have been
assigned, it is still recommended that you visit the first session of the course. If students who
received a confirmed place don’t show up for the first session, someone from the waiting list
will get their spot instead. In some cases, instructors will also take on more students than the
number of available confirmed places shown on UGO!

Course Categories
You will soon notice that not all courses are conducted in the same way. In general, there
are two groups of course categories: the ones with and the ones without continuous
assessment. You can find out which types of courses are included in your degree program by
checking the curriculum or UGO. The following section gives you an insight into the various
course categories and how they are structured and explains the most common types:
Lecture („Vorlesung – VO“)
In lectures, the content is imparted by the instructor through classical teacher-centered presentation. In introductory lectures, fundamental issues and basic knowledge of a subject area
are covered. Your grade for a lecture is determined only by the grade you get on the final
examination. Instructors are obliged to offer a minimum of three exam dates per semester
for a lecture.
Course without continuous assessment; attendance is not compulsory.
Orientation Courses („Orientierungslehrveranstaltung – OL”)
Orientation courses are courses which introduce the basics of your degree program. They
are an obligatory part of the Studies Induction and Orientation Stage. They are designed to
give you basic information and an overview of your degree program.Course with compulsory
attendance; no exam; attendance is enough to earn a “successfully attended” grade.

Proseminar (PS)
Proseminars are pre-stages of seminars. They are designed to cover the basics of academic and
scientific work processes, scientific reasoning and the use of subject-specific literature. They
should also teach the student how to acquire contents in self-study. In addition to presentations, contribution to class discussions or analytical tasks, students are (usually) required
to write a paper. Proseminars may also be project-centered. In this case, problem-oriented
scientific work, teacher-guided team work and the achievement of presentable results are the
central parts of this course category.

Seminar (SE)
In seminars, you reflect on and critically discuss subject-specific, scientific questions. Students are expected to deliver independently developed presentations and/or contributions to
class discussions and write a seminar paper. Like proseminars, seminars may also be projectoriented. In that case, problem-oriented scientific work, independent team work and the
achievement of presentable results are the main components of the course type.
Tutorials („Tutorium – TU“)
Tutorials are complementary to other courses and are held by qualified students. Students
usually do not receive grades for tutorials, however, it is possible in some cases. Only if graded: Course with continuous assessment; attendance is compulsory.
Practical („Übung – UE”)
Practicals are designed to work towards practical profession-oriented goals and should treat
specific tasks.
Lecture with Practical („Vorlesung mit Übung – VU”)
Combination of lecture and practical (see definitions above).
Excursion („Exkursion – EX“)
Excursions should illustrate and deepen acquired knowledge about certain subject areas. Not
every degree program’s curriculum includes excursions.
Laboratory Practicals (“Laborübung – LU”)
Laboratory practicals are part of most degree programs in the sciences and are meant to
deepen the knowledge acquired in a course by illustrating it through practical, experimental and/or constructive work. In most cases, students are required to write journals/minutes
about the conducted work.

Studies Induction and Orientation
Stage („StEOP“)
Information as per Novermber 2015. Attention: The laws regarding the StEOP are about to be
changed. Please refer to the Department of Education and Policy (see page 23) for current
information.
In most degree programs offered at Uni Graz, you will have to go through a studies induction
and orientation stage (StEOP) according to the Univeristy Act of 2002. This phase is supposed
to give you an overview of the most important contents of your degree program and what
you can expect from the rest of it. The studies induction and orientation stage is made up of
one or more compulsory courses and the orienting course (OL). Until you have completed all
courses of this stage, you can only sign up for a limited amount of other courses.
The OL is a course designed to introduce your degree program and provide information to help
you decide objectively if your chosen degree program is right for you.
Your curriculum determines which courses of your degree program are part of the studies
induction stage. Once you have successfully completed all the courses of this category, you
have successfully completed the studies induction and orientation stage.
Attention! – As long as you are still in the studies induction stage, some special regulations
apply:

Induction and Orientation Stage
While you are taking the courses which are part of your studies induction stage, you may
complete other compulsory courses of you degree program, but only to a limited extend.

For lectures which are exclusively part of an Studies Induction and Orientation Stage, the
university only has to offer two exam dates per semester (for other courses: three dates).

E-Mail-Account
Every Uni Graz student gets a free e-mail account. Addresses are always created by the scheme
[email protected]. You can access the account through a link in your UGO
business card or directly at: sbox.edu.uni-graz.at.
Reading e-mails carefully and regularly is one of the most important responsibilities of students! Any important information from the university and the ÖH are communicated through
e-mail only, which means that not checking your e-mails can have negative consequences for
you. Missed deadlines, information etc. are not only irritating but they can actually conside-

rably hinder you in your study efforts! So please make it a habit right at the beginning of your
studies to check your e-mails regularly!
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is available for students on the entire campus. The name of the university’s Wi-Fi network is eduroam. It will show up in your laptop‘s or smartphone’s list of available networks
as soon as you are on campus. eduroam is available at many other universities. You can log
into those networks using the same credentials as at Uni Graz.
The log-in works like this: Just enter: [your UGO username]@stud.ad.uni-graz.at (e.g.:
[email protected]) and your personal UGO password and press “connect” (“verbinden”) - you should then be connected. If you have problems with this, the staff at the
UNI-IT service desk will help you to sort it out. Simply take your laptop or other device to the
service desk during their office hours (see above).
Printers
In the course of your studies, you will often have to print documents. Therefore, many of the
computer workplaces on campus also have access to a printer/scanner/photocopier.
The printers operate with the uniFLOW system. You can print documents from every computer on campus on any on-campus printer, simply select uniflow as the printer on the computer and log in at any printer by scanning your UNIGRAZcard at a designated spot on the
printer itself. Before that, you have to set up a connection between your UNIGRAZcard and a
printer of choice through your UGO username. Once you have done that, you can charge your
UNIGRAZcard with credit, either via: guthaben.uni-graz.at or via cash payment at the ÖH
service center (Schuberststraße 6a, raised ground floor).
At the service center, you also have access to printers. For these printers, the amounts due for
printing are payable only through the Quick service (electronic payment through your debit
card). A Quick loading station is also accessible at the service center.
University Sports Center Graz (USI)
The University of Graz has a university sports center, usually referred to as USI (short for
„Universitäts-Sportinstitut“). It offers a variety of sports courses every semester which you
can register for. The range includes anything from “classics” like basketball, soccer, handball
or volleyball to various fitness gymnastics or aerobics courses to more unusual courses like
slacklining, sport climbing, archery or paragliding. Since the USI offers over 300 different
courses, it’s best if you check out their range yourself. On the USI website, you will find a list
of the courses they offer as well as FAQs about registration and information about their prices.

You will also have the chance to participate in in various competitions. If this got you in the

The ÖH Uni Graz offers counseling for a variety of topics. Apart from the student
representatives, there are 15 departments which have different responsibilities and fulfill
different tasks according to their field of competence and also offer some counseling services.

Freshmen and High School Graduates Counseling
The ÖH is responsible for freshmen counseling and counseling for high school graduates in

Freshmen Tutorial
In order to make the beginning of your studies easier and provide useful information, many
degree programs offer a freshmen tutorial at the beginning of every semester. It should serve
as a general guide as well as offer support for basic questions and issues arising at the beginning of your student life. It’s also a nice way of meeting fellow students.
Tutorials are guided by tutors, who can give you information about your degree program’s
curriculum, important sites on campus, general information about studying etc. If your
degree program offers a freshmen tutorial, the dates will be sent out to you by the degree
program’s board of representatives. Tutorials are usually held every week or every other week.
It is definitely recommended to visit a freshmen tutorial so that you get to network with other
students and get an impression of student life in a fast and uncomplicated way.

Financial Aid for Students
The ÖH Uni Graz puts great value to ensuring that students know their rights and
entitlements. The following is a short overview of the various support options for students.
Family Subsidy
Since the lowering of the maximum age for claiming the family subsidy, parents generally only
receive financial support for their children until they turn 24. Application is usually done by
the parents. With the consent of the parent who officially receives the payments, the amount
can also be transferred directly to your bank account. The responsible authority for the family
subsidy is the tax office. For further information go to: www.help.gv.at and www.bmw.gv.at.
Financial Aid for Students
As opposed to the family subsidy, financial aid for students is generally dependent on your
parent’s income. The Austrian official representation of employees offers an online calculator where you can calculate the amount you would receive approximately (www.stipendienrechner.at). Application is done through the financial aid agency („Studienbeihilfenbehörde“).

Student Tickets for Public Transport
Reduced fares for students are available for four, five or six month tickets. Student tickets are
available until you turn 27. You can buy them at the Holding Graz Linien mobility center in
Jakoministraße 1. For further information go to: www.verbundlinie.at.
Mobility Check
Subsidy provided by the city of Graz for the costs of student, half-year and annual tickets. The
maximum amount of the mobility check currently is 40€ (for six month tickets). Freshmen
have to bring a confirmation of registration upon applying for the mobility check, their primary residence must be in Graz and they can be no older than 27. For further information go

Housing Benefit
Benefit provided by the state of Styria for rent payments and service charges for rental apartments. The maximum amount for students entitled to maintenance for example is 68€ per month

Benefit provided by the ÖH in the amount of 0 cent per canteen meal for students who have
earned less than 10.000€ in the last year or who are claiming financial aid for students. For

Benefit provided by the state of Styria and distributed by the department for social affairs at
the ÖH Uni Graz (currently 320€ per semester) for recipients of financial aid for students who

TV – Phone/Internet – Electricity
Support for recipients of benefits according to the student benefits act (financial aid for
students). Television and radio can be received for free and a voucher of 12€ per month can
be claimed for cell phone and landline phone or internet bills. Additionally, you have the
possibility to save on electricity bills by elimination of the eco fixed rate and the cutting
of eco power promotion payments exceeding 20€. Information about affiliate phone plan

Chamber of Labor Benefits for Students
Benefit provided by the Styrian chamber of labor for children of chamber members or former
chamber members. Students who were or have been employed for a sufficient time period

ÖH Support for Socially Disadvantaged Students
Financial support provided by the ÖH Uni Graz and the ÖH federal representation for students

Housing
For most of you, beginning your studies also means moving away from home. In
addition to choosing your degree program, you will also have to decide on your
housing option: shared apartment? Private apartment? Student residence?
Residential registration
Important notice: before you can apply for financial aid for students, you must register at
your new residency unless you are commuting to university from your parent’s home. For
some other benefits (e.g. mobility check), your primary residence must be in Graz as well.
Foreign students are citizens of an EEA country (incl. CH) have to be registered with the regional governemt of Styria. For more information contact the Department for Foreign Students,
foreignstudents.oehunigraz.at.
Dorm rooms
If you choose to rent a dorm room, there are also some things to consider. Rooms in dormitories are very much in demand. The deadline for applying for a room is often before the
beginning of the university registration periods. Get information in time for applying. An
overview of contact data of dormitories in Graz can be found on the Uni Graz website in the
section Studying> Accomodation and Food > Student Hostels.
Apartment Search
As soon as you have decided to rent your own apartment or a room in a shared flat, you
have to know where to look. The most commonly used websites are www.willhaben.at, and
www.campusboard.at, but it’s also a good tip to check the notice boards in front of lecture
halls etc. where you will often find advertisements for flats close to campus. You can also
check Facebook groups, there’s a number of them were people post offers for apartments.
Once you have narrowed down the choices to a selection of apartments, you should make
appointments for viewing them. It’s always advisable to take somebody with you for the
inspection, two heads are better than one! Take into account aspects like access to public
transport and proximity/connections to campus. Make sure to check the fuse box, electricity,
power outlets, light switches and water supplies. Also, ask about the heating (gas? oil? longdistance heating? Where are the radiators in the apartment? Are there water stains on the
floor, under the radiator? etc.) Especially if you are visiting several apartments, make notes
after inspecting them so that you can compare them later. What was your impression? What
were the pros and cons of the apartment?

Housing Benefit
Once you have found a suitable apartment, you have to think about financing. No matter
what your financial situation, you should have a look at the housing benefit calculator of the
state of Styria (bit.ly/wobeihi_rechner). Further information, as well as the application form
and a list of required documents for your application can be found on: bit.ly/wobeihi.
Notice that if you live in a shared apartment, your flat mates need to have a lease contract
and their primary residence must be in Graz. The rent must not exceed € 8,18 (including taxes)
per square meter to be eligible for housing benefit. For shared apartments, the application for
housing benefit has to be signed by all tenants.
Lease Contract
After you have sorted out the apartment search and financing, you are facing another hurdle:
the lease contract. In order to avoid unpleasant surprises, it is advisable to have another
person read the contract before signing it. Aspects like the amount of the deposit, one-off
payment and commission should be discussed with the landlord before signing. If you have
decided for a shared apartment, these questions should be discussed with the main tenant.
If you have any uncertainties or problems concerning the lease contract or real estate agent
commissions, you can consult the chamber of labor in Graz. Their website contains useful
information about topics from one-off payments, frequently occurring questions like who is
responsible for painting the apartment to the lease contract and who has to cover the costs
for it.
Once you have taken care of all of these things, which won’t be a problem if you prepare
accordingly, you only have to move in!

Mobility
As a university student, you will of course have to make your way to university. Those who
don’t have their own car (which is not always an advantage anyways, considering the lack
of available parking spaces on and around campus) or live close to campus should best use
a bicycle or public transport.
Bicycle & Car
Given the relatively central location of the University of Graz campus, getting there by bicycle
is definitely advisable, especially in the summer months. Those who live outside of the city
and prefer to travel by car are advised to use the Park&Ride facilities along the city limits.
Public Transport
Students who don’t own a bicycle or don’t want to expose themselves to the cold during
winter still have the option of using public transport. As a special “treat”, the City of Graz provides the so-called “mobility check” (“Mobilitätsscheck”). It is available for all students under
the age of 27 with a primary residence in Graz. You also need to provide proof of registration
at university (freshmen) or proof of having completed courses to the extent of at least 16 ECTS
credits in your first semester (sophomores) or 16 ECTS credits in the past academic year (all
other students) for claiming the mobility check. If you fulfill these criteria, you will receive a
40€ discount for half-year tickets, 6 month student tickets and annual tickets, a 35€ discount
for 5 month student tickets or a 30€ discount for 4 month student tickets (as of May 2016,
this information is subject to change). You can claim the check on: bit.ly/mobilitaetsscheck.

Childcare
Going to university is not always easy for mothers or fathers – financial issues and lack of
childcare facilities are problems which occur frequently. The ÖH therefore provides various
support options. They offer weekly counseling for pregnant students and students with children. Further information about these services can be found in the ÖH leaflet “studying with
children“. There is also an ÖH kindergarten, where students can take their children for daycare. The Uni Graz also offers support in the form of unikid (www.uni-graz.at/unikid). As an
inter-university childcare center, unikid’s aim is to make studying and family life more easily
compatible for students..

Canteen
ÖH Canteen Stamp
The canteen stamp is a support provided by the ÖH through which you can get discounts in
certain restaurants if your income from the previous year did not exceed 10.000€ or you are
a recipient of student benefits. If you want to claim canteen stamps, you have to bring your
UNIGRAZcard to the secretary’s office in the ÖH building (Schubertstraße 6a/1st floor), write
your name and matriculation number on the provided list and give the secretary your name
and matriculation number. The benefits will then be activated for your StudentCard and the
canteen stamp (an “M” next to the validity date on your UNIGRAZcard) can be printed on your
card at any of the service points on campus. Upon showing your card, you will then receive a
0.90€ discount per meal in the following restaurants:
 Cafe Global (Leechgasse 22)
 Canteen at Sonnenfelsplatz 1 (across from the ÖH building)
 Canteen of the University of Technology Graz (Inffeldgasse 10)
Canteen Benefit
This benefit payment is provided by the state of Styria is available for a limited number of students whose primary residence is in Styria (but not in Graz). Application for canteen benefits
have to be filed at the department for social affairs at ÖH Uni Graz. Only applications from
students of the University of Graz will be processed.

International Students
Admission for International Students
Before international students can register at Uni Graz, they have to file an application for a
place at university within the general registration period. The application has to be handed
in at the Academic Affairs Office either personally or by mail and contain all necessary documents. Documents in foreign languages have to be translated into German by an authorized
translator or the translation must be certified to be correct. The processing of applications
may take up to 8 weeks, therefore it is advised to file applications as early as possible! If your
application is successful, you will be sent a confirmation of your place at university by mail.
Evidence of placement at international universities: Non-EEA citizens have to provide evidence of being qualified for their chosen degree program in the country were they graduated
high in order to qualify for a place at an Austrian university!
Certificate of proficiency in German: to qualify for a place at Uni Graz, German language
proficiency on level C1 is required. You can prove this either by completing an official language
certificate (e.g. ÖSD, Goethe) or taking a German class from the pre-studies training courses
at one of the universities in Graz. For more information about admission go to: bit.ly/intstud
Tuition Fees for International Students
Students from non-EEA countries who fall into the „Students“ category on their residence
permit have to pay a tuition fee of €726,72 plus the ÖH membership fee of €19,70 (a few countries are exempt). Students from southeast Europe have the option of getting their tuition fees
refunded by the university. Further information about tuition fees can be found on page 12
of this leaflet.
Residence and Visa
Students from EEA countries only need valid travel documents for entering Austria. If you
are not an EEA citizen, you have to apply for a residence permit at an Austrian representative
authority (e.g. embassy) in your country. Your residence permit will be handed to you after
you have entered Austria. For entering the country, you will additionally need a visa. Don’t
forget that you have to renew your residence permit three months before it expires!

Outlook
Semester Abroad
During your studies, you have the opportunity to study aborad for one or more semesters.
You should definitely make use of this opportunity! You could organize everything on your
own. But you also have the option of going abroad through existing mobility programs and
claim scholarships, which will make the organization and financing of your studies abroad a
lot easier. The most popular exchange programs at Uni Graz are ERASMUS, CEEPUS and JointStudy. Of course you have to decide for yourself if and when you want to go abroad. However,
in many degree programs there are semesters in which going abroad is easier than in others.

Master’s Degree
Most degree programs at the Univeristy of Graz have already been converted to the BachelorMaster system. This means that you have the option of ending your academic career after
three years, graduating with a bachelor’s degree. Many students, however, decide to complete
a consecutive master‘s degree and deepen their knowledge. Unfortunately, bachelor’s degrees
are also still not fully recognized as valid academic qualifications in the Austrian society.
For some disciplines, there are various specializing master’s degrees for one bachelor’s degree.
Apart from completing the master’s degree corresponding to your bachelor, many bachelor’s
degrees enable you to do “related“ master’s degrees. Often however, you will have to complete
some additional courses in order to qualify. Some master’s degree programs offered at Uni
Graz don’t have a corresponding bachelor’s degree (e.g. Global Studies). There are currently
no admission restrictions for master’s programs (except for having a compatible bachelor’s
degree). One exception is the master’s degree in psychology, for which you have to pass an
admission examination if don‘t have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Uni Graz.

ÖH – Get Involved
The people working at the ÖH are – apart from a few exceptions (secretaries, accountants,
service staff etc.) – not regular employees but students who want to actively represent your
interests. Because the student representatives are students themselves, they know which
problems are currently important and which changes should be made in order to improve
studying conditions.
The ÖH is therefore not only open to interested people who want to get involved and help but
also dependent on them. Any students interested in getting involved and helping are always
welcome. Working at the ÖH can be a nice change compared to the mostly theoretical work
you are doing in your classes. It is definitely fun and you will get insights into university processes which others don’t get. The experience of really changing things for the better through
your involvement is also irreplaceable.
So if you don’t just want to follow the rules for studying but want to be actively involved in
making them, simply get in touch with the board of representatives of your degree program
or directly with the department of the ÖH you would like to get involved with. Alternatively,
