Prof. John Yoo, key legal figure in War on Terror, shaper of
Unitary Executive powers during wartime, discusses “History of
Executive Power” in the U.S.
Note:
Please mark your calendars for March 27. This is the weekend for the
District Assembly, the time when next year's Club Leadership goes to
a Saturday meeting to learn the details of running a club and making
things happen. Location to be announced.
April 17, 18 is a weekend District Conference to be held in San
Francisco to celebrate the end of this Rotary year. It's great to have
this year's leadership attend. The highlight is a Hornblower yacht
cruise/dinner Sat evening. I'll be there all weekend...y'all come.

Spinnings for January 28, 2010
Ringing of the Bell: President Peter
Pledge: Jeff Griffith
Invocation: Don Daly
Song: T. Jack Foster
Note: Last week I erroneously referred
to Nanci Nishimura as Susan Hasegawa
or something like that. My bad-someone was talking to me at the time. I
went to high school with Susan
Hasegawa! Also last week I also sent
just two copies of Spinnings, which was
a big improvement over the eighteen
copies sent two weeks ago, right? Just
lowering expectations...and then I'm
going to peak like you've never seen!!
OK, maybe not. See the problem with
unrealistic expectations?
Newscast: Martin Harband
Politics: Within days of Sen Kerry
voting "yes" on the health care bill, his
doctor told him he needed a new hip.
Barack Obama was the "hip"
replacement.
Sunshine Report: All's well
Visiting Rotarians: None
Rotarians with Guests: Carol Bullock
introduced Kimberly Shirard. Brian
Sullivan introduced Ashley Pritchard;
she works at the UN and helps Rotary
with our micro-credit program. He also
introduced his wife Geri.

Monday at La Lanterna on 25th in San
Mateo. Price $35 + whatever you spend
on no-host cocktails.
Chuck Pascal DDS: Recognized for
being on a tv program, receiving an
award. Chuck clarified that dental care is
part of your healthcare! Chuck has been
working on a 10 foot airplane model for
the Hiller Aviation museum.
Mike Peterson/Steve Acker looking for
ideas for Saturday work project in Feb.
DeRussy and I both came up with the
same idea-- fix the overpass on
Peninsula.
John DeRussy, Historical anecdotes of
the DeRussy family. Peter showed a
great photo of Fort DeRussy Park, which
is a huge swath of land in Hawaii. John's
great great grandfather set up the coastal
artillery batteries there, as well as at Fort
Point in SF. John's great great
grandfather and great grandfather each
spent 50 years in the military. John
contributed to the Foundation.
Bayside School: Dick Nelson has set up
a committee meeting at 130pm next
week
after Rotary meeting to help tutor kids at
Bayside re: after school program.
Greg Lance: recognized as Educator of
the Year at Hillsdale.
Brian Sullivan: thanked Rotary and the
Taco Dinner for the kids will be
February 11 for dinner.
Bob Binn gave to the Foundation,
making good on his pledge re: the
Chargers.
Program: Walt McCullough introduced
Erin Witcher of Hoover Institution,
where she acts as Communications
Director.
John Lee thanked everyone for passing
Measures L & M, which provided
$4MM to allow certain services to
continue operating. John joined the
President's Club.
Erin Witcher, Hoover Institution
The State of the Union, Erin relayed, is a
rare event that helps a White House
deliver its message for the year. It's an
"all hands on deck" effort. Erin, when
Asst. Press Secretary, used to be in
charge of getting the reporters involved,
who to highlight during the SOTU. She
stated that the normal viewership of a
SOTU is 25-38 million viewers, and last
night's was about 35 million.
Wine Tasting: Stay tuned. More
information to come.
Filoli on 4/3: Roger Trinkler is
organizing a phenomenal event at Filoli.
We have a reserved, private room for
lunch ( 3 choices of boxed lunch and
beverages ) for Sat. April 3rd. Tour of
house and garden at 10 AM, lunch about
12:30. Cost is $12/per person for the
tour. Spouses are welcome!! Filoli
members for 2010 are free..(you must
have your membership card by April 3rd
and notify me). Lunch is $22, prepared
by the Filoli cafe. The first weekend in
April is usually great garden enjoyment.
RSVP to [email protected] or sign
the sign up sheet at our meetings.
Erin showed some great slides of herself
at the White House. The East Wing
houses the residential side of the White
House. The downstairs is where the
parties are held; upstairs is living area.
The West Wing is the "office" portion of
the White House. Upon entering, you
meet ROTUS (receptionist of the United
States). The (Teddy) Roosevelt room is
where the meetings occur every day.
POTUS arrives 645/7, meets with CIA,
FBI, etc. Erin's office was to the left of
the Roosevelt room. Just down the hall is
the Press Briefing Room. Erin used to
work with Tony Snow, Scott McClellan,
et al. One of Erin's great honors was
introducing President George W. Bush
to her family. The White House mess
hall looks pretty nice on the slides.
There is a hallway from the East Wing
to the West Wing, and there's a buzzer
there to alert people that... the President
is coming! The President is coming!
There's a running track, a putting green.
Erin was in charge of "national
television" where they were trying to
match up news anchors with topics they
were currently covering, or getting Tony
Snow to go back to back in one day on
all the networks. Every Saturday a.m.
President Bush would go on a bikeride,
with a "moving motorcade" through DC.
Great photo of the bowling alley.
Marine One would land on a spot on the
White House lawn; when Marine One is
coming in or going out, there are
actually three of them circling around to
act as decoys. Erin relayed that Obama
goes to Hawaii, Clinton would go to
Camp David, Reagan went to Santa
Barbara, and Bush would go to..Waco,
TX!
Erin's favorite memory was going to
Iraq, going up in an osprey with General
Petraeus, visiting the troops, checking
out Saddam Hussein's palace. She was
there at Christmas with General Petraeus
in Iraq, and they tried to bring some
Christmas cheer to the men and women
serving in Iraq.
Thanks for a great look at the insides of
the White House!
