I have to apologize to the community for having failed to keep the
Thorathuru at the level of a news letter and only reporting the events conducted by the Association.
My best efforts to attract contributions and articles of interest met only
with limited response. I suppose with the growing use of the electronic
media paper reading is moving to the back row. Today news needs not only be of the day but updated by the hour. Articles of historical interest or
of cultural significance find their place in journals of special interest.
The Thorathuru seems to be appreciated in hard copy form only by some
of senior citizens who may yet prefer to read a paper version rather than
on screen.
I have one more Thorathuru to publish and thank all those who helped me
and wish the new Editor all success.

CELEBRATION OF THE 63rd ANNIVERSARY
OF SRI LANKA REMERGING AS A SOVEREIGN NATION
The Roselea Community Centre at Carlingford
hosted over thousand attendees of a function organized jointly by the Sri Lanka Consulate and several community groups.

from all ethnic groups that constitute the multi-stranded Sri Lankan community watched
by Hon Sashikala Premawardhana and the Hon Dayasiri

Launched an evening of
recalling the past, celebrating the present and honouring the achievements of
those who hold our future
in their hands
The function was conducted with the blessings of religious leaders representing all
the major beliefs and philosophies that we practise and revere in our multi religious
homogeneity.
Messages from His Excellency the President the Prime Minister and the Minster of
Foreign Affairs were read by young representatives of the community in NSW
Our Committee member Krishan Lye was a compere par excellance coordinating the different segments with aplomb and polish

SENIOR CITIZENS DAY
As our President Avinder Paul said in his welcome speech, hosting our seniors to a day of music, dancing and
games is one of the events that the Sri Lanka Association takes the greatest of pleasure to organize. It recognizes a
core value of our culture that those who brought us into the world, nurtured and guided our footsteps should be respected and venerated. Perhaps political forces that looked upon the seniors as baggage to be eliminated never got
off the ground in our country.

The Village Family Night
The oganazing committee headed by Anoja de Alwis promised that on Saturday 19 March 2011, the Sri
Lanka Association of New South Wales would turn the Bowman Hall, Blacktown into a Bowman Gama
in rural Sri Lanka

cart with a bunch.
of thambili and kehel muwa dangling from the roof of the huts completing the village motif. The village Mudalalie complete with gold watch and chain, a corpulent ‗bundie‘ and fierce moustache was
seen keeping things moving. Oh it is Nirajan, Mudalalie today and Santa Claus yesterday.
The tables set with ‗Wesak Koodu‘ type lanterns, bottles of
wine and soft drinks beckoned to those entering the Hall. Not
to be out done by the ambiance, the women in cloth and jacket
displaying varying extent of midriff and men in colourful sarongs and matching shirts. started filling the Hall. The corks
popped and the good cheer poured out. An entre of boiled
manioc and katta samabal struck hidden chords from Sri
Lanka.

The young ones in Sri Lankan attire joined in the scene set by Anoja and the Committee and presented
a mix of Sri Lankan attire worn with an Aussie flourish. The band struck up and our compere, the willowy Miss Panadure drew the crowd to the floor

Conolly MP joined the crowd and Greg Smith enthralled the audience with his powerful and emotive
rendering of the Irish ballad ‗Oh Danny boy‘

Anoja-Niranjan-Buddhi– must be congratulated for having created presentation that would have evoked
nostalgic memories that would have transported most Sydney siders back home and have given our
Australian friends a taste of Sri Lanka.
A sumptuous dinner of string hoppers, fried rice, dosa, nan with varied curries and completed with Sri
Lankan sweets, wattilappam, curd and treacle, made it impossible to keep the good intention of not
over indulging.

Aubrey Joachim conducted the quest for the Village Queen and the Village King – a bevy of Sri
Lankan beauties and one adopted Sri Lankan vied for the title. A clutch of Sri Lankan youth challenged each other for the Crown. Gayathri Silva was selected as the Queen with M Rajanayagam and
Julia Ratnayake as the runners up. The King was Dhanushka De Alwis

The music resumed and the hall throbbed to the compelling rhythm of the baila and the gyrations of the
svelte and not so svelte forms in cloth and jacket kept pace with the sarong and shirt clad partners not the
least the ‗young Sumana‘ who put many of her younger sisters to shame with her perfect co-ordination
of movement to the music. A night that reluctantly had to be drawn to a close near one a.m. while the
floor was yet jam packed with revellers
