OVERVIEW ------------------------------------Cleftlip/palate(ClP)consistsofaspectrumof congenitaldefectsinvolvingtheupperlipandthehard andsoftpalate.ClPaffectsmillionsofchildrenand adultsglobally.Thisdisorderadverselyaffectsthe child’sappearance,speech,dentition,alimentation,and hearing.Therefore,thisplaysasignificantadverserole innormalsocialdevelopment.ClPhasbeendescribed asthesecondmostcommonlyoccurringcongenital anomalyafterclubfoot.Incidenceishigherwithin childrenofAsian,latino,orNativeAmericandescent, occurringincountriespossessingthebestnumberof trainedplasticsurgeonsandavailableresources. Thisprogramwillprovideareviewofsurgicalcleft care.Additionalinformationregardingperioperative managementandchallengesrelatedtoproviding medicalandsurgicalcareinanunderdeveloped environmentwillalsobecomprehensivelydiscussed.
