From Light Comes Beauty: OLP
Say goodbye to the effects of sun damage, hyperpigmentation, rosacea,
capillaries and more! Optimized Light Photorejuvenation (OLP) is a simple choice
to obtain a radiant complexion. Our photorejuvenation treatment is a non-surgical
approach that uses gentle pulses of intense light to treat undesirable pigment and
vessels.

Summer Promotion
Photorejuvenation utilizes a light-delivery device to place energy deep into your
skin. The targeted imperfections then slowly disappear as your body’s natural
healing progresses. The light is composed of multiple wavelengths of high-power
energy that reduces or eliminates many common effects of aging and encourages
the production of collagen. Pulsing the light rather than having a continuous beam
allows us to optimize the treatment of pigment and vessels without harming
surrounding tissue. The result? Skin that looks and feels better than ever!
Page 3
There is minimal discomfort, little to no downtime and quick treatment sessions. A
photorejuvenation procedure can be performed in as little as 30 minutes,
depending on the size of the treatment. You can often see improvement
immediately and only one or two treatments may be needed.

Before undergoing treatment, it is important to clearly understand what OLP can
and cannot accomplish. You can get the best information by scheduling a
consultation with one of our providers.

New University of Colorado Surgery Center!
Beginning in late fall or at the end of 2012, Dr. Winkler will begin operating in a
new Outpatient Surgery Center in Lone Tree, Colorado! The University of
Colorado Hospital purchased this building in early 2012. It is currently being
remodeled to fit our needs.
The center will be fully accredited by JCAHO, and will maintain the exceptionally
high standard of care and safety that the Denver community has come to expect
from the University of Colorado Hospital.
What does this mean for you? Having your procedure done at a surgery center
means convenience, a speedier turn around and increased comfort. For many
of our patients in Lone Tree, the new center is part of the neighborhood.
If you’d like your procedure performed at the new surgicenter, simply mention
this to Dr. Winkler or Monica Banuelos.

Cleft Surgery in Antigua, Guatemala: Mission Trip 2012
Andrew A. Winkler, MD
Each year, 7,000 babies are born in the US with a cleft lip or palate. In wealthy countries, these children are treated with a
variety of procedures within the first few years of life. In contrast, children born with cleft deformities in underprivileged
countries have no access to these services, leading to devastating social isolation, difficulty breastfeeding, poorly devleoped
and ear infections. These children are so stigmatized that often do not attend school.
In April 2012 I had the privilege of going to Antigua, Guatemala on a medical
mission trip performing cleft lip and palate surgery with the Faith in Practice
organization. This was my third mission trip, but my first visit to Guatemala.
Everything we used in the operating room was brought to Guatemala in large
storage lockers by the team—an accomplishment in itself!
The Obras Hospital and Triage
Sunday was “triage day” where patients were
evaluated in a clinic. Sadly, many patients had
problems that we could not treat and were turned

away. However, 13 cleft and 3 non-cleft facial
plastic surgery patients were scheduled for surgery over the next 4 days. The operations
took place in a beautifully converted church called the Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano
Pedro hospital. Saint Pedro lived in Antigua in the 1600s and was known to physically
carry the sick and abandoned on his back or in his arms to his hospital. Today, the building
is a church, shelter, and treatment center for the mentally and chronically ill. It also houses
a medical and dental clinic, as well as several operating rooms.
Patient Stories
A one-year-old named Kevin with an incomplete
cleft lip was one of our first patients —nice to start
with an easy one! His mother was very young and
came alone from many hours away. In fact,
several patients traveled great distances to reach
the Obras by any means possible (including
walking)! After surgery, Kevin stayed overnight
without complication and then traveled home.
Kevin, Unilateral Cleft Lip
Raymundo, Bil. Cleft Lip
Another memorable patient with a more severe deformity was Raymundo. He was
born with a profound bilateral cleft lip deformity. Though complicated, Raymudo’s
surgery was extremely successful. The deformity is vastly improved and will
continue to improve as he grows. Raymudno still has a cleft palate, which we hope
to repair next year.
Antigua, Guatemala
Each evening we explored the spectacular city of Antigua. This
ancient city is known for its jade jewelry, textiles and fine dining.
There are beautiful cathedrals and Spanish colonial ruins to visit as
well. On the last day, we also hiked Volcun Pacaya, one of four
active volcanoes in the Antigua skyline. Desolate and ash-covered at
the peak, the scenery on Pacaya is stunningly beautiful.
Future Efforts
Though they require a great deal of work, time and money, mission
trips are intensely gratifying. We will return to Antigua next year to
continue the care of these patients and to provide our services to
other children in need. We also hope to bring other experts, such as
speech therapy and oral surgery, in order to provide the complete
complement of cleft care to these children.

Skin Care Summer Camp
Colorado summer days are calling you outdoors! The change in weather increases
your sun exposure, making it a good time to alter your skin care routine. Here are
our tips for keeping your skin healthy while enjoying summertime fun.
*Sun Protection. In the summer, UV levels wreak havoc on unprotected skin.
Broad-spectrum, water-resistant sun protection with an SPF of at least 30 is
essential. Apply 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.
Don’t forget the lips, a common site for skin cancer. Choose a lip product with an
SPF of 15 or higher and apply every two hours. If you wear lip-gloss or lipstick,
stick with darker shades as they provide more UV defense than a sheer, glossy
product.
*Clothing and Sunglasses. Your scalp and ears need to be protected from
harmful rays. A hat with a broad rim is better than a baseball cap in protecting your
ears. UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) clothing is excellent and available in
specialty stores. The clothing you already own, such as unbleached cotton, darker
fabrics and tight weaves also prevent harmful rays from reaching your skin.
Oversized sunglasses are fashionable again this year making them a great source
of protection. Choose gray or brown lenses with UV 400 protection and impact
resistance.
*Cleanser. In the summer cleansing your skin is critical. Between the warm
weather and outdoor activities, you will perspire more and create an excess of
sebum. A good cleanser will help prevent clogged pores and breakouts. Try
Skinceuticals Purifying Cleanser or Obagi Foaming Gel.
*Moisturizer. Skin re-hydration is important after a day in the Colorado sun.
Choose a product that moisturizes and contains anti-aging ingredients. The ideal
moisturizer depends on your skin type and we are happy to help you find the
perfect product for your skin.
*Antioxidants. Research continues to prove that antioxidants protect your skin
from free radical damage. Our current favorite is Obagi CRx Vitamin C Serum,
which contains a skin lightener to keep brown spots from forming.
Liposculpture
Liposculpture, or “abdominal fat
transfer” is an extremely popular
procedure used to augment lost volume
in the face. As we age, volume is lost in
the face leading to deepened facial
folds and a “squaring off” of the heartshaped face of youth.
During Liposculpture, fat cells are
gently harvested from a small incision in
your belly button. They are then
cleansed by hand and injected into the
facial folds caused by age, sun and
free-radical damage. The two most
common areas treated with
Liposculpture are the nasolabial folds
and cheekbones. In this way, the lost
facial volume is replaced with your own
tissue, giving a soft and natural result.
An advantage of Liposculpture over
traditional soft tissue fillers such as
Radiesse® and Juvederm® is that it is
permanent. The fat cells that survive
the procedure are living tissue and will
be around as long as you are! However,
not all of the fat survives the process.
Smoking cessation and eating a healthy
diet will improve the “take rate” of the
fat cells that are transferred to the face.

volume and fullness to the aging face. Sculptra was approved for cosmetic use

treatment lifts the cheek and tightens the jaw.
Sculptra is a facial injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid and is not harmful to
the body. In fact, it has been used for decades as implants and sutures.
Sculptra dissolves over many months into carbon dioxide and water. As it does
so, it stimulates the body to make collagen. The effect is a gradual increase in
volume and a slow correction of the underlying causes of facial aging.
The results from Sculptra emerge more slowly than other facial fillers giving a

more natural looking appearance. A full treatment of Sculptra is an average of
three sessions over a few months and results last up to 2 years. Sculptra is
suitable for the correction of deep nasolabial folds, lines by the mouth called
marionette lines and chin folds.
