Dear Friends,
As we write this letter, we are
tremendously proud of the past
year. Thank you to everyone
who supported the Museum in
2015- members, visitors, donors,
volunteers, Ambassadors, and
our Board of Directors. Each of
you inspires us to reach farther
and dream bigger. It is an honor
to have each of you join us on
our incredible journey; you have
enabled us to serve 200,000
children and families- 150,000
visitors through our doors and
an additional 50,000 students,
teachers, and families through
outreach programs and events.
Those numbers grow every year leaving us in awe of all that your
support empowers us to do.
2015 was a banner year for TCMU. We received grants from regional
and national competitive programs including the National Endowment
for the Arts, the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership,
South Carolina Humanities, and the Freeman Foundation. As a
Smithsonian Affiliate, we hosted Innoskate 2015 which welcomed 3,000
children and families to TCMU in just one day. And we joined the City
and County in issuing a proclamation creating Wheeled Sport Day in
the fall. These highlights only hint at the outstanding programs, camps,
leagues, exhibits, fine arts exhibitions, and community outreach coming
from TCMU.
We’ve come so far since our beginning in 2009. To think of all we
have accomplished with your help brings joy to our hearts. All of the
exhibits, programs, and achievements featured on the following pages
are a testament to what your support and encouragement have spurred
at TCMU. We need you to continue fulfilling our mission of sparking
a lifelong passion for curiosity and learning through play. Thank you
for being there for TCMU, and more importantly for our community’s
children.

2015 Exhibits
Simple Machines
Simple Machines focused on the 6 simple machines- incline planes, edges, screws, levers, pulleys, and
wheels and axles. Sponsored by iMAGINE Upstate and on display during the STEAM-focused festival,
children engaged with the exhibit by constructing and manipulating simple machines and building with the
Imagination Playground blocks.
Buddy’s Safety Town
Thanks to Safe Kids Upstate, the Children’s Hospital at Greenville Health System (GHS) and
the Department of Children’s Advocacy, Buddy’s Safety Town, TCMU’s built-in-house fall exhibit
celebrated Safe Kids Upstate’s 20 years of work to prevent unintentional childhood injuries and deaths. The
highly interactive exhibit encouraged children and families to practice safety measures at home, at school, at
play and on the way. New iBeacon technology from Greenville First Steps enhanced educational content
throughout the exhibit by allowing families access to important childhood developmental milestones. Special
thanks go to Bradshaw Automotive for their generous support of both Safe Kids Upstate and TCMU!
Holiday Traditions
Holiday Traditions made its annual appearance from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Children engineered
train routes, watched classic holiday films, viewed our Christmas town collection, and explored the highlight
feature, a dollhouse size replica of Greenville’s historic Lanneau-Norwood Funderburk house, on loan to
TCMU by grandparent member Patt Smith.
Early Childhood
Countdown to Kindergarten
The third annual Countdown to Kindergarten
celebrated another generation beginning the
exciting world of kindergarten! 30 community
partners provided helpful information about
programs and services available to families with
young children plus fun giveaways- everything
from books and pencils to free vision screenings.
A big thanks to Greenville County First Steps,
South Carolina’s Future Scholar 529 College
Savings Plan, and Publix Super Markets
Charities for sponsoring the event!
Leveraging Literacy
Story Time and More, TCMU’s family centered early literacy program,
remains a museum guest favorite, as it has continued to be one of our fastest
growing programs serving over 17,000 children and families in 2015, a
74% increase from 2014. Children and families enter the classroom, greet
one another through song, listen to the week’s story read aloud, and then
participate in a literacy
related, hands-on activity
“I have seen how Story Time and More
together. All activities

Operation Anyone?
Buddy Bear needs your help! Thanks to a generous
gift from the Children’s Hospital at Greenville
Health System (GHS), TCMU is now the home
of a new, interactive operation table located in our
Teddy Bear Clinic. GHS’ continued support of the
exhibit has allowed this new addition as well as
new props and other upgrades to the exhibit. We
are grateful for their partnership in helping our
youngest community members learn how to take
care of their health!
Scholarship & Fund-A-Family
“The Children’s Museum of the Upstate has
generated a lot of excitement every year; we
love the interactive exhibits! Every area of your
museum is kid-friendly from the grocery store
to the water wheels! Your classes allow us to
address our curriculum standards in an engaging
way. Our students talk about your museum with
such excitement that we want to keep coming
year after year!”
-Greenville County School Teacher
TCMU is intended to be a resource for
ALL children in the Upstate. Thanks to
the many funders and supporters of
these accessibility programs, in 2015
our Scholarship and Fund-a-Family
programs funded

“We go through a lot of sadness due to the kids’ situation. It was
so nice to have a distraction and enjoy laughter instead of tears.
Thanks for being a part of their happiness.”
-Miracle Hill Foster Family
Finances for the Family
Thanks to funding received from the Institute of Museum
and Library Services and State Farm, in 2015 TCMU held
three Finances for the Family programs, serving 82 graduates. In
partnership with the Greenville County Human Relations
Commission, Finances for the Family promotes financial literacy
to help stop the cycle of poverty in at-risk communities through
experiential, family based learning. Children and families attended
interactive classroom sessions followed by real-world role playing
using our exhibits as learning labs.
Finances for the Family received national recognition from both
the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the international
Association of Children’s Museums. And, TCMU CEO Nancy
Halverson was invited to

Maker Fest
Over 900 visitors attended TCMU
for Maker Fest where they built
and created with a variety of
materials and participated in
demos about robots and coding.
Local maker groups were on site
to demonstrate and inspire our
youngest minds. A big thanks to
our program partner General
Electric for teaching visitors to
create with 3D printers!
Summer Camps
For a third year in a row,
Cognizant’s “Making the Future”
grant program provided excellent
hands-on learning and fun with
the STEM curriculum at TCMU’s
summer camps. Camps included
Hello from Japan! Camp, Healthy
Choice Camp, Cosmos Camp, Put
on a Show Camp, Engineer It, and
Everything Art Camp!
Mess Fest
Always a popular event, the day
featured all sorts of messy science
experiments and art projects.
Highlights included glow paint,
fizzy science, extreme bubbles,
watermelon drop and sand slime!
A big thanks to South Carolina
Future Scholar for sponsoring
such messy, educational fun.
Tails on the Trail
Thanks to a grant from the
Metropolitan Arts Council,
Artists-in-Residence Stephanie
Morgan and Laura Lynn Luce
engaged children and families
in the creative writing and
illustration processes.
Laura Lynn Luce’s original
watercolors were on display
throughout October in TCMU’s
Be Anything Place gallery.
CATCH
Continuing our support for
Greenville’s efforts to combat
childhood obesity, TCMU offered
CATCH programming that
included field trips, outreach,
cooking classes, demonstrations,
and even a Healthy Choice Camp.
Thanks to our funders the RGK
Foundation and the Fortune
Family Foundation for your
generous support.
LEGO® League
TCMU hosted 4 teams during
2015, leading 30 children ages
6-14 to design, create, and test
projects as a team. For the second
year, our FIRST® LEGO® League
team advanced to the state
competition! Thank you General
Electric and AFL for your
generous support of our LEGO®
League teams this year!
“The entire Hello from Japan! exhibit emphasized the importance of the
humanities in understanding everyday Japanese culture. The wonderful variety
of staged and interactive exhibits addressed a fascinating and unique range of
Japanese cultural practices.”
- Dr. Lane Harris, Department of Asian Studies, Furman University
Hello From Japan!
Konnichiwa! Hello from
Japan! began its nation-wide
tour this summer with its first
stop at TCMU. Welcoming over
54,000 museum guests, Hello
from Japan! was by far our most
popular summer attraction. With
over 100 related programs and 4
exhibitions, children and families
enjoyed a host of supplemental
activities to enhance their
learning experience.
Thanks to generous
grants from the National
Endowment for the Arts,
The Humanities CouncilSC,
and The Japan Foundation
Center for Global
Partnership, artist-inresidence Aya Kakeda along
with guest artists Yoshiko Moon
and Yuri Tsuzuki presented and
demonstrated their artwork
during an artist meet-and-greet.
Ms. Moon and special guest
from Japan Hideko Nagasaka
facilitated a traditional Japanese
tea ceremony followed by a
manga workshop lead by
Ms. Kakeda.
Complete with Hello from
Japan! Camp, an anime film
festival, an online digital
photography exhibit depicting
life in Japan, origami and
Kyudo demonstrations, Hello
from Japan! allowed TCMU
to celebrate our Japanese and
Japanese American neighbors. Thank you to our community
and national partners Furman
University Department of
Asian Studies, the Japan
America Association of
South Carolina, and the
Association of Children’s
Museums in partnership with
the Freeman Foundation.

LOVE.
AI: Love featured the traditional
sumi ink paintings and calligraphy
of Japanese Master Yoshiko Moon
and the contemporary paintings
and sculpture of Yuri Tsuzuki.
Inspired by a 20 year friendship
and a deep love of their Japanese
heritage, AI: Love demonstrated
the powerful synergy of the human
experience represented by both
the traditional artistry of Moon
and the contemporary artistry of
Tsuzuki. Thanks to funding from
the National Endowment for
the Arts and The Humanities
CouncilSC, both artists
demonstrated and spoke about
their artistry at an artist panel
discussion held in TCMU’s
Be Anything Place gallery.
Giving Back: TCMU Volunteers
