Journal
The Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation’s mission is to seek out, establish, develop and support
programs that foster and promote good health and quality of life throughout the Alle-Kiski Valley.
Foundation’s Healthy Impact
Looking back over the years, it is
easy to see why the AKH Foundation
has become so endeared to the AlleKiski Community. The Foundation’s
impact on community health &
wellness has been felt from the
emergency room, to the classroom
and much in between. As the
Foundation looks ahead, it has
amassed an impressive list of recent
accomplishments in its storied history.
Non-Profit Center
Perhaps its most tangible
accomplishment was the opening of the
Charles & Mary Lou Young Non-Profit
Center last year. The Center includes
the state-of-the-art William & Grayce
Walker Conference Room, which is
rapidly becoming recognized as a
favorite place for organizations to hold
community educational programs, staff

Foundation’s Healthy Impact - continued
trainings and even video conferencing. In the less
than one-year’s time that it has been open, the
Allegheny Valley Chamber of Commerce,
Highlands Emergency Services Alliance, Southeast
Butler County Community Alliance, Pennsylvania
Association of Non-Profit Organizations, Allegheny
Valley YMCA, First Presbyterian Church of
Tarentum, Port Authority Transit, Animal Protectors
of the Alle-Kiski Valley, the Power of 32, Family
Services of Western PA and the AKH Foundation
have all utilized the Walker Conference Room.
Direct Health Care Grants
Direct health care organizations were the single
largest category of grants made by the AKH
Foundation. Approximately $1 million has been
committed to the local hospital in the past dozen or
so years. Additionally, more than $160,000 was
given to the AK PULSER rescue organization,
much of it towards the purchase of emergency
vehicles. And over $28,000 was provided to the
New Kensington Free Clinic.
First Responder Support
Another $115,000 was granted to local first responder
organizations throughout the Alle-Kiski Valley,
including police departments, volunteer fire
companies, ambulance services and rescue groups.
The investment helped purchase a myriad of
equipment and other needs including AEDs, thermal
imaging cameras, police equipment, rescue
apparatuses and training.
Community Education
More than 15,000 attendees took advantage of
approximately 165 educational programs sponsored
by the Foundation. Within those numbers include the
7,000 PA Act 48 hours provided to local educators.
Presentation topics were diverse and included
programs on Attention Deficit Disorders, Suicide
Prevention, Alzheimer’s Disease, Drug Abuse
Prevention, Hormone Replacement Therapy, Internet
Safety & E-Dangers, Gun Violence Prevention,
Healthy Nutrition and many more.
Scholarships
Educational scholarships to local residents now
total more than $28,000 annually. Awards are
currently made in the areas of nursing, math &
science, humanities, English literature and sports.
The scholarship program is the result of
generous individuals like Helen Rakowski Bole,
Bonnie Orkow, Adolph Rzotkewicz, Robert &
Jean Walsh and Sam Huey.
Healthy Teen Initiative
Because today’s youth represent our future, the
Foundation places an emphasis on its “Healthy
Teen Initiative”. Three of the healthy teen
programs have been the most popular.

Many Additional Community
Benefits
There are many more communitybased health & wellness related
programs that the Foundation has
partnered with in recent years, such
as the following: The Highlands
Emergency Services Alliance, the
Southeast Butler County Community
Alliance, the Allegheny River
Stewardship Program and numerous
other projects.
Continued Community
Support
Dr. Paul Nussbaum, author of “Save Your Brain” at the
2010 Dr. H. W. Fraley Health & Wellness Lecture.
First is the hard-hitting and emotionally powerful,
“Heroin: Lives Forever Changed” DVD. The
professionally produced film has been viewed by
thousands of teens and young adults, and more than
400 copies have been distributed to schools, youth
groups and other organizations free of charge.
Second is the nationally recognized Truth &
Consequences Jail Tour program. More than 400
attendees have gotten a glimpse of life behind bars
and a sample of the harsh realities of incarceration.
The Foundation provides bus transportation and a
boxed lunch on the return trip, with the help of a local
business person.
Third is the whole array of school focused educational
programs for students, teachers and parents. The
Foundation has provided materials or actual
presentations at many Western Pennsylvania school
districts and teacher support organizations in recent
years including Burrell, Butler, Deer Lakes, Franklin
Regional, Freeport, Greensburg-Salem, Highlands,
Kiski Area, Leechburg, PSEA sites, Riverview, Seneca
Valley, Shaler, Shenango, South-Butler,
Transfiguration, Union, Valley and others.
The Foundation’s success at having
such an impact on the health &
wellness of the Alle-Kiski Valley is
directly attributed to the support received from the
community. Simply put, without the generous
support of individuals in the community, the
Foundation could not exist! The Foundation is very
thankful for the support received and is confident
that the examples of benefits provided to the
community listed in this article will be cause for the
continued support of the wonderful people of the
Alle-Kiski Valley.

Making a Gift Through Your Will
Although most people understand how last wills
and similar estate planning tools work to
distribute wealth and possessions at their
passing, many are not aware of the various
ways that charitable gifts can be made through
a will. Designating an amount of money or
personal property to one’s favorite charitable
organization through a will or similar document
is referred to as a “bequest”.
Perhaps the most common misunderstanding
about bequests is the wrong assumption that
they need always be in the form of monetary
gifts. Not true, bequests to a charitable
organization can include personal property such
as jewelry, automobiles, antiques, buildings,
land, etc.
Another frequent misunderstanding is the
unfounded fear that bequests will disenfranchise
surviving loved ones. However, bequests can
be made in specific amounts or percentages
that can be structured so as not to have a
negative impact on heirs. Bequests can even
be made contingent on another event. For
example, naming a charity as a beneficiary
“contingent” on the survival of one or more
heirs, would ensure that your assets would only
go to the charity if your named heirs predecease you or another heir.
Of course bequests are a great way to support a
favorite charity without giving up control of your
assets during your lifetime. Other advantages of
making a charitable bequest may include federal
estate tax savings, a decrease in other death taxes,
the satisfaction of knowing that, even at your
passing, your favorite charity will benefit from your
generosity, etc.
Charitable bequests are very easy to incorporate
into your will or other estate planning instrument.
As always, individuals are advised to discuss the
matter with legal and financial professionals before
making any charitable gift.
For more information on charitable bequests or
other giving methods, please phone the AKH
Foundation office at (724) 294-3157 to request the
free booklet, “Touching the Future Today”.
