COMMENCEMENT
2015
The Class of 2015 celebrated their last day as
Wayland students on a beautiful Saturday morning,
May 23, 2015. Their Commencement Speaker
this year was alumna Shelley Greenwood
`73,
Vice-President for Advancement and the Interim
Head of the Lower School at Latin School of
Chicago. After sharing her own Wayland story
and discussing the years she had spent since her
graduation from Wayland, Greenwood asked the
graduates to pause and reflect on what their
lives would be like 42 years after their graduation.
These, she said, were her hopes for them in 2057:
I
hope you took time over the decades to
reflect on what part of you was nurtured
right here.
I hope you found a way to stay connected with
your teachers and your friends.
I hope you took risks.
I hope you failed and tried again.
I hope you stayed true to your millennial traits –
confident, connected, and open to change.
I hope you had fun.

I
nstead of assuming that people spoke to me
only for their own gain, I learned to listen
and trust in the security of my friendships.
I urge you all to do the same. Wayland is a
place of remarkable open-mindedness. By
approaching situations openly you can learn
a lot about others and even some new things
about yourself.

hink for a moment about the 28 different
countries represented on this campus
this year… Think for a moment of where we are
and what we are doing right now. What will we
remember from this day? It is all but certain that
the 40 of us graduating from Wayland Academy
today will never be together again as one group…
However, though we will separate, our memories
will not be erased. Our memories allow us
permanency in a fleeting and temporary world.
Take a moment. Look around you. Breathe it in.
This is a profound moment.

Weekend
ALUMNI
RECOGNIZED
October 9-11, 2015
During the 2014 Alumni Reunion Weekend,
three Wayland alumni were recognized for
their achievements and service to Wayland:
John Hughes `64, Burnie Sullivan `69, and
John B. McKinstry H`10.
Reconnect with your classmates and alma mater for
three days of fun!
Relive your Wayland memories and enjoy the Friday
afternoon Alumni Speaker Series, the Friday Night
Mixer, Saturday’s Varsity Football Game and All
Alumni Dinner, and the weekend-long Alumni Art
Show.
All alumni are welcome, especially those celebrating
Milestone Reunions:
1965 – 50th
1990 – 25th
2005 – 10th
AND all classes
whose years end
in 0 or 5!
The Distinguished Service Citation, awarded to
McKinstry, is the highest honor that Wayland
Academy can bestow upon an individual.
Established in 1961, the award recognizes
outstanding service to Wayland. McKinstry
retired from the Wayland Academy Board of
Trustees after seven years of service to the school
in that capacity. His support was instrumental
in a number of upgrades on campus, including
the new building security system.
John Hughes was presented the Alumni
Achievement Award for his outstanding work as
CEO of a health care organization in England.
The award is presented annually to an individual
deemed worthy of special recognition for
outstanding achievement in his or her field and
for representing the true ideals of the Academy.
Sullivan was given the Alumni Volunteer Award,
an honor presented to an alumna or alumnus
whose loyal and
steadfast volunteer
efforts on behalf of
Wayland enhance
the mission of the
Academy and the
Alumni Association.
He
has
served
on the Board of
Trustees for over 17
years, never missing a meeting, and his support
of the school has been tireless.

THE ENDOWMENT:
Named Scholarships & Other Programming Support
Alumni and friends of Wayland Academy become members of the Heritage Society by including Wayland in
their estate plans or by making the Academy a beneficiary in their charitable trusts, annuities, wills, and life
insurance policies. This year, Wayland’s endowment benefited from two Heritage Society bequests totaling just
over $1 million. Judith Pickard Yeakel `47 and Margaret Boldt Anderson `74 were both strong, active supporters
of the Academy and served on the Alumni Board. Yeakel went on to serve on the Board of Trustees and was
later awarded Emeritus status. Wayland is grateful to them and to the following alumni and friends who have
decided to provide future sustaining support to the Academy through the Heritage Society:
Endowment funds are a set of restricted gifts which generate annual income to support student scholarships,
faculty compensation, academic programs, facility improvements, and other operating expenses. This
endowment income is crucial to help Wayland fulfill its mission-critical objectives. Wayland is grateful to the
following alumni and friends who have established endowment support for the Academy:

Wayland wishes to acknowledge the many ways alumni,
family, and friends give to the Academy. Whether they
donated an item to the school, assisted with an alumni
function, helped with the Fall/Spring Family Weekends, or
volunteered at the Spring Gala & Auction, Wayland is truly
thankful for their commitment.

A portion of the proceeds from the 2015 Gala’s Live Auction was devoted
to supporting student health, one of the Academy’s four pillars. Thanks to
gifts received that evening, a new bouldering wall was installed in the Field
House this summer, and new flooring, elliptical machines, stationary bicycles, and strength training equipment were added to a re-designed fitness
center on the Field House balcony. The catch-phrase on campus these
days when a student is looking to improve their physical fitness is monosyllabic: “Gains.” On behalf of the student body, thank you for the Gains.
