messing about in boats…In or out of ‘em,
it doesn’t matter.”
i think the entire membership-competitive or club racers, cruisers,
anglers, retired boaters, spectators, and the
rest of us—can agree with this sentiment
of Kenneth grahame. Boats--and increasing our enjoyment of
boats--are the reason all of us joined BYC.
and prime “messing about” time is about to begin. all signs
point to another wonderful southern California boating season.
notices of upcoming activities from anglers, racers, cruisers
are enticing. The 50th anniversary of our governor’s Cup
regatta will be celebrated this summer and the 3rd wooden Boat
Festival takes place in June. sailing lessons and rides to whites
are being offered. Volunteer opportunities are everywhere.
and, of course, the weather will be absolutely perfect.
get active, volunteer, take part, have fun. Mess about like you
never have before. and then write about it for The Talewind.

FROM THE BRIDGE
Welcome to Spring!

W
e are so fortunate to live in such a
great area – not too hot, not too cold,
not many bugs, and boating year round
– it’s hard to beat. I’d like to take this
opportunity to thank a few people, update
you on some house items, and then leave
you with a request.
First, let’s extend a great big warm Balboa
Yacht Club “Thank You” to both Deidre
Bird and Cathy Pazemenas. Deidre is
our past editor of The Talewind, and she
and her team have done a fantastic job in
adding special layouts, sharp graphics, and
just a fantastic overall effort to continue
to improve the quality of our unique
publication. While we will miss Deidre as
our editor, she continues to volunteer in
other areas of the Club, and for all of this,
Deidre, we say “Thank you!” Then there is
Cathy, who has jumped right in to take over
as our new editor. After searching for the
right person, we were thrilled when Cathy
agreed to take on the role – it’s great to know
that we are in good hands going forward –
and for that, Cathy, we say “Thank you!”
For our house items, I will first address
what we do not have. Unfortunately, we
haven’t quite received the rain that was
predicted (yet), but the Sierras have a
nice snow pack, hopefully helping our
drought conditions. In the meantime,
please continue to conserve water wherever
possible, and especially at our Whites
facility at Catalina. Here is what we do have
– new restrooms in the main Clubhouse.
While the restroom remodel has taken a bit
longer than expected, I think that you will
find the results worth the wait. In addition,
we had the cupola (that little tower on
the roof) remodeled, and the ventilation
unit replaced. This should improve the
circulation in the Bayview Room (our main
dining room) and bring added comfort,
should we get any hot summer days. Thank
you to General Manager David Robinson
and the entire staff for making these projects
as convenient and unobtrusive as possible
for our members and guests - well done!
Now for the request: Your Commodores
and the Board of Directors continue to

strive to make decisions in the best interest
of our Club, but we need your help in two
areas. First, remember to promote BYC
membership. You are the frontline for
identifying potential new members, and
since we don’t advertise, one of our only
options is to spread the word. A strong
membership base is the key to maintaining
our affordable dues and maximizing our
amenities. Second, be on the lookout in
the near future for a member survey that we
will be conducting, soliciting your feedback
on how we can continue to improve BYC.
Your ideas and suggestions help us focus on
what is important to our members.
So, with another productive off-season
behind us, and having so many great
volunteers and staff that help make our
Club what it is – please enjoy this issue
of The Talewind, as we get ready for what
promises to be another great year on and off
the water at Balboa Yacht Club.

FROM THE general manager
Come on Summer!

W
ith both BYC
Opening Days
right around the corner,
the Club is abuzz with
activity due to all of
the preparations and
planning. Danie and
Vasko Alexander have
the Opening Day here at our Clubhouse in
good shape, with a few surprises added in.
One change of note is the revised schedule
for Opening Day, to be published soon. To
avoid any security issues, we have been
asked to tighten up the gates later in the day,
when the festivities are completed. After
sunset, we will ask members to respect
the neighbors and tone down the volume.
We will also be limiting the access at that
time to members only. Look for more
information on this new security procedure
as it is finalized.
Out at Whites Cove, Cheri Poe and
Shannon Green are planning an endless
summer, over the course of the weekend
called…. “Endless Whites.” When those
two get together to plan an event, look out!
More info on this event is coming, but mark
your calendars for Memorial Day weekend
(May 27 – 30).
Prior to Opening Day at Whites Cove,
we have three work-weekends planned
(one has already been completed by the
time you read this) to get the station ready
for the summer. We have full use of the
new pier, completed last year, to help us
get ashore, and Station Manager Mike
has been working hard over the winter to
prepare the station for the season. Look
forward to seeing our newly-added flagpole
on station, proudly flying our Burgee and
the American flag. Replacing the pole was
a complex project this past year, as the old
pole had finally surrendered to the termites.
There are many smaller projects that need
all hands, so please contact Mayor Bill
Powers to inform him of your interest in
helping with the work parties. A bit of
work, but a lot of fun!
Back at the mainland, we have been
busy improving the facilities, primarily the

construction of the new restrooms (heads).
By the time you read this, we should have
cut the ceremonial ribbon and flushed the
first toilet as celebration! It may take a
week or two more to finish up the work on
the patio before we can officially close the
books on this project. I am sure you will be
thrilled with the results. Thanks to S/C Ray
Lewis for championing this construction,
from plans provided by Rob Tyler.
Many other “behind the scenes” projects
also took place including all new computer
cabling throughout the Clubhouse and
window tinting on all west-facing windows.
It takes a lot of work to keep your Club
in ship-shape condition, and many of our
January projects allowed us to do that with
little impact on the membership. Thank
you for your understanding and cooperation
during the shutdown and the renovation of
the restrooms (not bad temporary heads,
though?) over the past few months.
During the closure, we also upgraded our
Wi-Fi system, that s now up and running.
As a reminder, we have a couple of Wi-Fi
systems at the Club. One of them in the
Clubhouse comes up on your device as
BYC WiFi. Out on the docks, WiFi Harbor
will come up, as it does at Whites Cove.

Please see Gracie to get the passwords,
and please keep them to yourself, as we do
not want to offer our service to the general
public.
As we head into the busier season, I
want to take a moment to remind you of
Club reciprocal privileges. We welcome
members from other yacht clubs that offer
the same privileges (hence, reciprocity)
as we do -- docks, overnight privileges,
showers, dock staff, clubhouse with
food and beverage services, etc. Most of
those clubs reciprocate and offer the same
benefits to our members. Some smaller
clubs might not share reciprocity with
BYC, usually because they do not offer the
same services as mentioned above. It is
all about reciprocity. If you know that you
are will be visiting a club on your travels
and you do want to enjoy their services,
take the time to have Gracie send them
a Letter of Introduction on your behalf.
It may make your visit that much more
enjoyable. Reciprocity is a valuable benefit
of membership, for which I stress you take
full advantage.
As a reminder, don’t forget to pick
up your “Valid 2016” membership card
stickers, new parking decals, and a 2016
Roster from Gracie at the Front Office. You
are asked to affix the “Valid 2016” sticker
to the back of your membership card and
replace your outdated parking decal on
your vehicle with the new one.

spring Cleaning

w
inter is over and it’s time we get ready for
another great summer on the water. if you
haven’t noticed, the port committees and our dock
staff have already made extraordinary progress
getting the port shipshape for opening day and
gov Cup 50. You will see a lot of fresh paint, junk
removed from the yards, and vessels cleaned up.
if you have a vessel in the port you can help too.
our goal is to have the Club looking “best in class” for opening day
and you can support the cause.

if your vessel is on a trailer, make sure the tires are properly
inflated and if needed, give the trailer a coat of paint
don’t stow anything below your trailer or on the ground
surrounding the area (if you want to store paddle boards or
other marine equipment in your vessel under the cover, that’s
okay)
Chock your trailer wheels
if your vessel is in one of the racks, make sure the area is clear
of other items
remove any hazardous materials from the yards
Check your inflatable for proper inflation
Be sure you are in your assigned location
if you have an interior locker, do not store any hazardous
materials or outboard motors, and stow only boating items
don’t stow anything on the docks
remove extra items from topside of your vessel (paddle
boards, kayaks, etc.)
neatly coil your lines on the dock
organize shore power cords and hoses
Check vessel bow and anchor locations to prevent dock
overhang
all Vessels
• Clean your vessel on a regular basis to remove bird droppings
or other waste
• Consider having the vessel polished/waxed for opening day
• Check the condition of all canvas
if you see something requiring attention which is beyond your control,

Spring into Your Boats!

A
s we are gaining
more
daylight
hours, it is time to
spring into our boats
and enjoy the great
weather! The Cruise
Fleet, chaired by Irene
Ziebarth, has been to
Marina Park and the Conservancy Ball.
The Anglers, chaired by Bob Hoose, begin
the season with the In the Bay Tournament.
The sailing regattas including the Harry
Wood Regatta, chaired by Walter
Johnson, Super Sabot Saturdays, chaired
by Pinky Greene, and the revamped 66
Series/Shamrock & Gybe, chaired by Scott
Poe, have involved many Balboa Yacht
Club boats and sailors.
Many of our sailors have been racing
up and down the coast, in Newport and
abroad. Congratulations go to John Shulze
on Horizon for winning the Puerta Vallarta
Race with Len Bose and Gunnar Torre;
to Chris Hemans and his team of Brad
Wheeler, Mark Peters, and Rob Smith
on Varuna for winning the Islands Race; to
Alex Steele for winning the Viper class in
the NOOD Regatta; to S/C Alan Andrews
and Chuck Simmons for placing 2nd on
Karakoa in the Borocay Regatta in the
Philippines; and to Steve Kent for placing
4th with his J105 in the St. Francis Yacht
Club Spring One Design regatta. Porter
Killian, with crew Chris Killian, won
the H20 B Division in the WD Schock
Memorial Regatta. He is now the only
junior skipper in Newport’s H20 A Fleet.
The BYC Team Racers participated against
Porter Killian 1st in B Division, WD Schock Regatta
John Shulze at the helm of Horizon.

NHYC Baldwin Cup.
Our collegiate sailors have been doing
well in their regattas too. The College
of Charleston sailors competed in three
different regattas on the same weekend and
Christophe Killian was 1st in the Port of
Los Angeles Harbor Cup. Ryan Davidson
placed 3rd in his Team Race Regatta at St.
Mary’s, and Bayley Davidson was 5th in
the Navy Spring Women’s Event.
There is more spring sailing to come
with the Newport to Ensenada Race (April
22-24), and 66 Series (April 16 and May
14-15). Also, it’s time to get your boats
ready for Opening Day (May 7). Summer
sailing starts May 11 with Twilights and
May 12 with BeerCans, chaired by Pinky
Greene and Bev Roberts, respectively.
So don’t you want to join us and get
involved in one of these boating activities?
We can always use your help – no
experience needed. You can sign-up by
contacting the individual chairs or talk to
Becky Lenhart or email her at sailing@
balboayachtclub.com. It would be great to
see more people out on the water. If you’re
interested in learning to sail, crewing on a
race boat, helping with race organizing and
race committee, getting some fishing tips,
or watching the activities, come on down

BYC Angler Update

T
he 2016 season has
officially started.
Nate Shill, fishing

Mistress,
kicked his season off
in January with a sixtythree pound white sea
bass, which qualified
for the 2016 First Flag
for white sea bass. A sixty pound white sea
bass is a catch of a lifetime and to capture
this gamefish in local waters is an amazing
feat. Nate also managed to catch the First
Flag for yellowtail while at San Clemente
Island. Congratulations Nate!

Save the Dates Saturday, April 30 -- “In the Bay”
Tournament (Note date change)
This is a “reel fun” bay fishing
tournament in Newport Harbor.
The
tournament has awards for Juniors’, Men’s,
and Women’s categories. This is a 100%
release tournament and the tides look great
for some good catches. We will be serving
Balboa Yacht Club burgers and hot dogs on
the Flag Deck from 5:00 – 6:00 pm. Entry
forms are available at the front desk.
Saturday June 18 – Catalina
Classic at Whites
Our Catalina Classic is
comprised of fishing around
Catalina Island only, and we are
looking forward to another epic
season of yellowtail fishing.
While the water is too warm for
squid locally, huge schools of
yellowtail have already settled
in and around Catalina Island
and we are hoping for a big fish
weekend!
El Niño 2016
The reports are calling for
another warm water cycle off Captain Nate Shill enticed this sixty-three pound white

has happened! The first month of the new year brought us seven

February followed and gave us one new Collegiate member. This
month looks promising with nine applicants ready to go for the April

n late February, a group came together
with the hopes of using their best efforts
to recruit members in order to grow our
membership. We call this group the BYC
Ambassadors. I would like to personally
thank those who have committed to the
membership initiative. Your love for Balboa
Yacht Club is truly showing and has resulted
in many inquiries and applicants.
Our best source of potential new member
candidates is through our members. This new
group will focus on membership recruitment,
which will build and secure our future. If you
would like to become a BYC Ambassador,
please come by my office. If you really think
about it, you’re probably already recruiting
friends and family, so why not do it with a
cool title?

at Balboa Yacht Club.
What a fantastic turnout!
All the hard work by the
Membership Committee,
our Ambassadors, Communications and
Membership Manager Kristi Underwood,
our staff, and each and every member who
invited a candidate to this event paid off!
We set out to provide a very informative
and fun event for our guests. After
registration and being welcomed by their
sponsor and/or Ambassador, guests were
escorted to the Model Room where key
Club representatives answered questions
and provided information on Club activities,

have Reverend
R i c h a r d
Kannwischer
as its new
pastor. Richard
has been the Lead Pastor of St.
Andrew’s Presbyterian Church
in Newport Beach for over six
years. A native Texan, Richard
graduated from Trinity University.
He met his wife, Kelly, while they
were both attending Princeton
Guests were welcomed aboard a nice mix of member boats: Laura Davick’s Vista, Paul
Blank’s Promotion, Sally and Tim Cannon’s Outbound, Deidre & Steve Bird’s Proud Bird,
and Doris and Don Stoughton’s Lioness. Guests also had a chance to view Defiant and our
fleet of rental boats, including our Duffy, Harbor 20s, kayaks, and paddle boards.

taken on a tour of our facility including the
guest dock where Dock Hosts Steve Bird
and Lowell Hauswald greeted them. They
were encouraged to go aboard a number of
members’ boats to get a real flavor of what
we are all about, “playing with boats.”
Our Membership Open House had a fun
vibe and activity that everyone enjoyed. We
have some fantastic potential new members
who attended the event. We will follow
up with guests to ensure that we bring in
new members who share our passion for
boating and who will continue to build on
the legacy of the Club. We look forward
to your continued support as we sponsor
additional events to grow and strengthen
our membership.
Theological Seminary.
Kelly is the
Chief Engagement Officer for THINK
Together, the largest educational nonprofit
in California. They have two daughters;
Danica (12) who enjoys studying history,
and Ashby (11) who loves doing art
projects.
Richard has served churches in Houston,
San Antonio, and while at Central
Presbyterian Church in Summit, New
Jersey, he led the congregation through
the wake of the September 11 tragedy.
He received his doctorate from Fuller
Seminary and is currently serving the
school as a member of the board of trustees.
As BYC pastor, Richard will provide
invocations for Installation Dinners
in December and the Opening Day
ceremonies. He will also be a
part of the blessing of the fleet
and honoring those who have
passed during the eight bells
segment of the program.
The Kannwischer family
enjoys snow skiing, traveling,
hiking, and playing golf.
They would like the girls to
learn how to sail and they are
all looking forward to getting
to know the BYC community.

Mayor’s report
Whites Cove Update

Whites Cove Mayor
I
n spite of just over
three inches of rain
all winter, the island
turned a wonderful
shade of green for our
first work party. The air
temperature hovered at
sixty-nine degrees, with
the water temperature a pleasant sixtyseven degrees. It could not have been more
pleasant.
We were hoping for a significant amount
of rain this winter, however, a high-pressure mass positioned over Southern California kept the rain in the central and
northern part of the state. Unfortunately,
with the continued drought condition,
it will be necessary to maintain last summer’s water-conservation policies.
Our outpost held up fairly well over
the winter with the exception of the loss
of several trees. Dry soil at the root base
coupled with sixty mile per hour winds
in January toppled four trees. We expect

Several members have asked me about
the condition of the float at the end of
the pier. Last season, after the pier was
replaced, the float appeared a bit unstable,
as it would shift forward and back,
especially at low tide. I am happy to report
that over the winter, additional anchor
supports were installed and the situation is

greatly improved.
With barely two months before Opening
Day, we are working hard to ensure that
Whites will be in the usual great shape for
the 2016 season. As a reminder, there are
two more scheduled work parties - April
23 and May 14. If you are able to attend
either or both weekends, we would love to
have you.

identification contest, saturday and
sunday! i use the word “contest” loosely,
as this will be nothing more than a very
happy and fun event!

o play a part in this year’s anniversary
celebration of the Governor’s Cup
Regatta, consider hosting a Gov Cup
team in your home. For past regattas,
Club members housed young sailors from
Australia, New Zealand, Italy, England,
Brazil, Chicago, San Francisco, and
San Diego locally. Ongoing and lasting
friendships resulted with the sailors,
as well as with other members of the
Balboa Yacht Club Housing and Gov Cup
committees.
Requirements are a place to sleep and
bathe for the sailors, and maybe a bit of
driving. Meals are provided by the Club.
Proximity to the Club is a plus.
Competitive sailors and the yachting
community recognize the Gov Cup as
a very well run, very hospitable event.
Here’s a chance for you to show that
hospitality this year at an important event
for the Club. You can contribute to the
Club effort while gaining another way-and reason--to enjoy the Club. As the
head of the Housing Committee, Doris
Stoughton, a twenty-plus year Gov Cup

Jobson dropped by the
Club on February 29
to have a look at the new Governor’s Cup
22 boat, which was again out for a brief
sail. Jobson, an Emmy Award winning
filmmaker and sailing commentator for
ESPN and NBC Sports, took footage of the
boat for the movie he’s making and did a bit
of sailing on the boat himself with a handful
of young sailors from the Club.
The purpose of Jobson’s visit was
to collect footage of the new boat for
inclusion in the movie he is producing
about the Governor’s Cup. The movie will
premier in July in conjunction with the 50th
Anniversary Celebration events. There
is great anticipation about the movie and
its premiere will be a “not-to-be-missed”
event. A teaser/trailer for the movie is
available on the Club website, as well as
on the homepage of the recently relaunched
regatta website www.govcupracing.com.

accepted the offer to sail the new boat
while some of our more veteran members
(Director Brett Hemphill, Greg Newman
and Walker Banks) sailed one of the
current boats. After capturing footage of
racing starts, upwind sailing and downwind
sailing, Jobson could not resist the
opportunity to get aboard the hot, new boat
and do some sailing himself. The result was
an impromptu seminar for this handful of
our most promising young sailors, and an
experience they are not likely to forget.
Knowing
fantastic,
photogenic
(videogenic?) material when it presents
itself, Jobson filmed the kids sailing the
boat from onboard and interviewed them
about the Governor’s Cup, what it means to
them, and what they are doing to prepare
to contend for the Cup someday. Expect to
see one or more of these young sailors in a
starring role when the movie screens - and
likely beyond.
There is still much to do to prepare for
Governor’s Cup 2016. It’s not too late to
volunteer to serve on one of the special
event committees or the regatta committee,
or to sponsor the event or a team. Contact

Summer Program is broken up into half
day programs. We have classes for anyone
six to eighteen years old. Don’t forget our
program is open to members and nonmembers, so feel free to invite your friends
to join. The Summer Program brochure and
online registration are available on the BYC
website under “Youth Sailing,” then found
under the “Junior Programs” tab. Don’t

We are also going to set up some more
adult sailing classes in the BYC Harbor 20s.
If you are interested in participating, please

Reminder, too, that if you are looking to
get out on the water, the Club Harbor 20s are
available to rent. You can take them out for
an afternoon or even rent them for an entire
month during our Twilight Series coming
up May - September. If you are planning to
rent one, we do ask for a twenty-four hour
notice. If you know you want to rent one
for Twilights, it isn’t too early to make the
reservation.

Where is Marina Park?

and I got the most while
we were planning the
most recent Balboa Yacht
Club cruise. Marina Park
is a City of Newport
Beach public park on the
Newport Peninsula. It is in close proximity
to the Newport pier, right next door to the
American Legion Yacht Club. You may
remember, if you have gone on any harbor
cruises in the past couple of years, the large
fenced in area past Newport Harbor Yacht
Club with dark plastic and water spewing
out of a hose. Well, now it’s a beautiful
ten acre property on the bay which offers
a great playground for kids, an expansive
grassy area for family picnics and outdoor
fitness, a sailing center, a community center,
a marina, and the Lighthouse Café. The
Sailing Center and Community Center offer
community classes for all ages through the
Newport Navigator, the city’s recreational
brochure. Kayaks, SUPs, and small boats
can all be used through these classes, as
well as through UCI. The café is open for
breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The Marina Park Cruise was a great turn
out for the BYC Cruise Fleet. While it wasn’t
the shortest journey for us this year (the
cruise fleet celebrated its first cruise to BYC
last month for a prime rib dinner), it was an
impressive turnout. We had eleven boats
arrive Saturday, March 19, for the night.
After the boats settled in and we lamented
over the treacherous journey, we were able
to relax and catch up with each other. There
was no need to wash the boats down from
the salt water, no dinghies to prep, and
no dirty mooring to pick up. Later in the

afternoon, we cruisers made our way up to
Marina Park and were joined by two more
boats (aka day-trippers) and a handful of
others who arrived by car (aka land-lubbers)
for an informational tour of the facility lead
by Mayor Diane Dixon and Harbor Analyst,
Shannon Levin. Commodore Doug West
presented a BYC burgee to Shannon for
Marina Park, thus beginning the tradition
of visiting yachtsmen exchanging burgees.
BYC’s burgee is the first burgee they will
hang on the wall.
After the tour, the traditional BYOB and
appetizer Happy Hour was held on the boats.
Usually we have one boat to act as host, but
with our fifty-one person turnout (including
our day-trippers and land-lubbers), we were
glad to have multiple hosts. A special thank
you to Proud Bird (Deidre and Steve Bird),
Tramonto (Jim and Sally McClure), and
Islander (Commodore Doug West and
Irene Ziebarth) who were our gracious
host boats for the evening. Afterwards,
everyone split off with their own dinner
plans. The following morning, the group
walked together to Newport Harbor Yacht
Club for a wonderful Sunday Brunch.
Upon returning to the
marina, the discussions
continued on the dock
while many of us
utilized the in-slip pump
out before leaving for
“home,” one-by-one.
In all, it was a
beautiful weekend, filled
with friends and fun, and
most of all, no stress.
Marina Park is a great
place for a “staycation”
should you be looking
for the perfect getaway
without a lot of work.

for september 23-25.
This year will be our
fourth trip. The three
prior cruises have brought
female members and their
friends together. we have racers, cruisers,
anglers, and dominoes players from twenty
to seventy year olds. There is something for
everyone on the trip and the camaraderie is
truly the best part of the weekend. every
hen is welcome!
The cruise is a true girls’ weekend with
no kids, no hubbies, and no cooking. we
are very appreciative of our staff who come
with us and add so much to the event: our
general Manager david, Chef Bobbi, our
favorite bartender Mario, our dockmaster
Matt, who provides shore boat service, and
of course, station Manager Mike. They
rock! we have a very relaxed schedule
with hiking, crafts, professional massages,
reading, and napping during the day. at
night we eat and drink, dance and play!
The cost is $220 if you sign up before
august 1 and $250 after that date. The
price includes Friday and saturday dinner,
saturday brunch, sunday breakfast,
signature drink, saturday cocktail barge,
shore boat service, and a cool goodie bag.
Massages are an additional cost. about
fifteen boats make the voyage over and you
don’t need your own boat to attend. You
can catch a ride over to the island and camp
onshore at the Balboa Yacht Club Catalina
station or the Catalina experience.
not only is the event a blast, we have a
lot of fun at the planning meetings. each
year there is a theme and this year it is
orange is the new Black (loosely based on
the novel and netflix series). Come to our
meetings for more information, to help with
ideas and plans, and join a subcommittee.
These are not your traditional committee
meetings. we serve soup, salad, rolls, and
beverages for $10 per person. everyone is
welcome and we have a good time!

This event, the wooden Boat Festival, will
celebrate its third year in June. it’s a day to
view handsome, meticulously maintained
wooden boats in the water, such as sailboats,
runabouts, launches, and cruisers large
and small. and let you examine proudly
presented powerboats, smaller sailboats,
and human-powered boats (think canoes,
rowboats, dories) on land.

Kennedy, lorelle Miller, who has done the
front cover for the Festival program, and
gary Miltimore, the artist of last year’s
program cover, wil be exhibited.
one of the most popular attractions
from last year, lindsey philpott, the “Knot
guy,” will be back. he’ll be demonstrating
techniques, old and new, and explain how
the rigging of ancient sailing vessels held

annual wooden Boat Festival on saturday,
June 4, 2016. last year’s event was well received
by members, guests, and the media throughout
southern California. we hope you will want to
get in on the action and volunteer!
The fun begins at 8:00 am and concludes at
5:00 pm. The official dress for volunteers is khaki
pants, black shirt, and tennis/comfortable shoes.

2,000 people to admire the fifty extraordinary

Inside Sunkist Series

ore than seventy
boats representing
eleven
yacht
clubs
participated in the 20152016 Inside Sunkist
Series. This winter series
covering four months
quite often has races
cancelled due to rain, fog, or too much
wind. This year we were fortunate to get in
seven races, with January having only one
race due to light air. Daily first trophies
were given out each month to the winners
of individual races, but in February, the
overall trophies were awarded as shown.
Four perpetual trophies were awarded.
The Marilyn Gibbons trophy for the largest
number of first place wins in a non-keel
boat was shared by Jeff Lenhart and F/C
Molly Lynch, the Antiqua Trophy went to
Walter Johnson, the Excaliber Trophy went
to Tucker Cheadle, and Emile Pilafidis
won the Cagney Trophy. These trophies
are all on display in our trophy case.

March 12 and 13
brought
us
Balboa
Yacht Club’s first annual
shamrock ‘n gybe
regatta. without enough
registrants for saturday’s
inside dinghy races,
the racing for the phrF boats outside
was the focus, and proved to be fantastic.
Champagne conditions met the eleven boat
fleet both days with sunny skies and a nice
ten to twelve knot breeze.
saturday, our expert pro, Bob Strang,
and crew ran two buoy races, and sunday
was an always fun reverse start pursuit
race. S/C Alan Andrews and F/C Molly
Lynch on Doubletime showed us all
how it’s done by reeling off two first
place finishes saturday in Class B, and
then winning the pursuit race against all
competitors. Class C had the always quick
Rosene family finishing with two firsts,
and a second. Class a, unfortunately, only
had one boat, which was Roy Jones on
Tango, so she swept her class.
with nothing but great feedback on the
regatta and the format, especially the pursuit
race, it’s guaranteed that the shamrock
‘n gybe regatta will be back again next
year, with we hope two or three times the
participants, and we will get enough inside
dinghies to share in the festivities.
The 66 series continues with a random
leg race on saturday, april 16, and then
a destination race to long Beach on May
14 and 15.

out. our aim is to have as much fun and
camaraderie as humanly possible! see you
on the start line.

members to optimize our new seamanship
Center. Randy Cochran is working with
Balboa Yacht Club staff to ensure that our
project will support all of their operational
needs. Dean Kiser and our dedicated
house Committee have been charged
with capturing the spirit and flavor of our
heritage in the architecture of our new
interior spaces. naturally, this effort would

guests and family

Room with love.
In February, Ross Perlman and Mickie
Jacobs were married in Hawaii on their way
home from Australia. They were married
on the same spot where they met after Ross
completed a Transpac race. They were
accompanied by their combined seven
children, two grandchildren, Mickie’s
– by Irene Ziebarth
mom and brothers, Ross’ two brothers, and
all of their spouses.

Avalon seems quite pleased with everything
she’s seen so far. Congratulations to the

Shipwrecked: Fortunately, only one
member gets credit here. From the last
issue, you know that our Crystal Cove
diva, Laura Davick, headed for the
Panama Canal and Costa Rica for the
December holidays. Little did we know
the Windstar Cruises’ 200 passenger
boutique cruise ship, Star Pride, would run
aground on barely submerged rocks twenty
nautical miles off of Panama at the Isla de
Coiba during anchoring maneuvers. The
passengers were taken to the remote island,
largely (completely?) without facilities,
pending the arrival of other vessels to take
them to the mainland. They all received a
full refund and future cruise credit. Laura
would have preferred an uneventful cruise.
Stowaway Sam:An
African
safari with Mike and Gloria Sullivan kept
him busy this winter. Posing in Maasai
jewelry,
in
Olduvai Gorge,
Tanzania, he
was asked to
join the group,
and why not?
The
Maasai
marry at about
age twelve, and
the men seem
to have little responsibility (the children
herd the animals and the women take care
of everything else, including patching their
roofs with dung). The men didn’t see any
competition in Sam, but the women weren’t
sure what to make of him. The uncertainty
made him nervous so he continued on with
the Sullivans, posing again, but next time
with cheetahs lounging under a tree. What
a life.
Who knew the Amazon was next on his
short list? When Bob and Mary Longpré
weren’t looking, Sam rolled into Mary’s
camera bag and has been posing for
pictures every chance he gets. They started
in Manaus, Brazil before boarding the
Seabourne Quest heading through the heart
of Brazil’s rainforest. He may be the new
Seaborne mascot.

quick dinner before heading back to Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, and their 62’ Offshore,
Singita. From there it’s points north
from West Palm Beach and wherever the
Intracoastal Waterway takes them.
