A FORMER Tzaneen Municipality Revenue
Division intern who allegedly stole R855 000
from the municipality handed himself to members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, on
Thursday.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant
Colonel Mohale Ramatseba, said the suspect,
Jeffrey Maake, stole the money from the municipality between 2006 and 2009.
He appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate's
Court on charges of theft on Friday. He was
granted bail of R3 000 and will reappear on
November 11, pending further investigations.

They have been on strike since last Friday
and vow not to return to work until they get
what they want. "We never got any increases
since the new owners took over and we
demand at least a 5,2 % increase," said one the
employees.
Orion Magoebaskloof Hotel was owned by
local businessman Guy Matthews and known
as Magoebaskloof Hotel before it was bought
by the Orion Hotels group last year.

JOIN Cansa (Cancer Assosiation of South
Africa) in making a difference during the Relay
for Life.
The Relay will take place on November 11
and 12 on Merensky’s rugby field from 18:00
till 06:00 the next morning.
There will be lots of food stalls to cater to all
tastes, entertainment all night long and loads of
family fun.
Of course, the highlight of the evening will
be the Luminaria Ceremony, where cancer
victims and survivors will take part in a moving
candle-lighting ceremony.
Teams must consist of ten participants, one
of which must be on the field at all times. Entry

Be warned: New shuttle service scam

Legal Aid SA awards three locals
THREE lawyers from the Tzaneen Justice
Centre made locals proud when they brought
home three awards from the Legal Aid SA
Limpopo/Mpumalanga Achiever Awards.
Awards giving ceremony was held on
Thursday at Bundu Lodge in Mbombela where
Tzaneen’s Miranda Palane scooped the Bright
Spark of the Year Award.
Justice centres that were competing included Polokwane, Modimolle, Nelspruit,
Makhado, Ermelo, Witbank, Middelburg and
Thohoyandou.
Eugene Nenzhelele from Tzaneen came in
third place in the category of paralegal of the
year, while Eric Mudau, also from Tzaneen,
came third in the best upcoming lawyer of the
year category.
Delivering a keynote address at the ceremony, Mrs South Africa Laurette Batstone,
urged all women to aspire for excellence in
their daily work by ensuring that they become
leaders of tomorrow by following their

She acknowledged the Limpopo / Mpumalanga recognition of their own as it will ensure
continuity by motivating all employees to
aspire for excellent performance.

service and delivery of quality legal services

LOCALS are warned to be on the lookout for
an alleged scam involving a shuttle service
travelling between Tzaneen and Pretoria.
It is reported that a business operating under
the name of Cravenby Shuttle Service, is
conning people out of their money.
Cravenby is apparently a shuttle service with
"several" buses running between town and
Pretoria, charging R150 per passenger.
Prospective passengers are asked to make
their payments for the trip beforehand by
phone, using the cash send method. The
number for Cravenby is apparently 084 594
5869, it was unavailable when the Herald
attempted to call it.
After payment, the shuttle apparently
doesn’t show up at the agreed place and the
number merely rings without answer.
One complainant, who wishes to remain
anonymous, said that the shuttle failed to pick
her up. She eventually made her own way to
Pretoria.
When she later finally managed to contact
Cravenby, she was told that she had been
trying the work number (a cell number) and
that the driver claimed he had picked her up.
She was promised a refund and that she
would be transported back to Tzaneen again.
When the time came for her to leave though,
the bus again didn’t show up and the number
once more just rang. It has since come to light
that another person was also scammed in this
manner. People looking to make use of a bus or
shuttle service are urged to make sure that it is
a legitimate business before making any payments.

THOUSANDS of Muslims, many of them from this region,
will again this year take part in the Hajj Pilgrimage.
The right medical and precautionary preparation for this
pilgrimage is essential and Mediplus and Lombards Pharmacy in Tzaneen can assist pilgrims with all their requirements.
The Hajj pilgrimage is an obligatory pilgrimage for
Muslims which presently results in a mass co-ordinated
movement of more than four million pilgrims from all over
the world.
It takes place over a period of five days. Every year the
dates are adjusted according to the Lunar calendar. This
year it will take place beginning of November. The Hajj
pilgrimage has set rituals at specified sites in certain
timeframes. It is obligatory for every adult to perform the
Hajj pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.
Day1:The majority people walk the 5 km from Mecca to
Mina as it was how the Holy Prophet completed the
journey, but some people can travel by vehicle if they prefer
to.
Day2: Go from Mina to Arafat, after sunrise. This is the
essence of the Hajj pilgrimage.
Day3: Proceed to Muzdalifah 5 km before sunset, after
midnight proceed to Mina 5 km. Arrive at Mina at sunrise,
symbolic pelting of the one Satan.
Day4: In Mina only, pelting the pillars before sunset,
return to Mecca 5km departs for home.
All age groups attend, but accreditation systems favour
the eldery, as well as people attending the Hajj pilgrimage
for the first time.
Medical advice for travelers:
Persons attending the Hajj pilgrimage must be physically
fit and in good health. Avoid heat stroke - drink lots of
bottled water.
Vaccinations:
Yellow fever and meningitis vaccinations are compulsory.
Other vaccinations that is recommended: Flu vaccination, pertussis, tetanus, diphtheria, polio, pneumococcal
vaccination, hepatitis B, and cholera.

indigestion; Treatment for Diarrhoea.
Skin conditions can occur due to the temperature and
activities. Fungal infections are common due to humidity
and heat.
For chapped feet it is important to use moisturizers.
Pilgrims tend to walk bare feet, socks can be used
especially in Medina.
Footwear should be bought a few weeks in advance, and
should be worn before departure for the Hajj pilgrimage.

I went to the SAPS about the matter after
being alerted to the fact that they had access to
the Dangerous Animals Unit of Nature Conservation.
I saw the station Commander, Captain
Baloyi, who was very helpful and contacted
Nature Conservation for me.
They sent out two members of Nature Conservation staff to survey the area.
I showed them the road were to cubs were
spotted by Rika Wentzel recently. Their approach is to get a team of specialists together
and to try to lure the mother leopard into a
cage. She will then be moved to a game
reserve.
Every attempt will be made to find and save
the cubs, whose age is not known.

AFTER being the runner-up team
the previous season, Merensky's
U/15A Cricket team proved that
team spirit, humility and dedication were the winning sixes that
helped them to secure the
Limpopo title this time around.
The Limpopo League final was
played in Polokwane against PHS.
They won the toss and decided to
bat first, setting the benchmark for
the blue-blood Plasie team. After
46 overs they were all out for
103/9. Due to poor weather condition the match was delayed.
Once the skies were cleared the
game resumed. With 16.2 more
overs to be played the score was
104/5 ensuring that the prophetic
words spoken by coach, Stephan
Nawrattel at the start of the season
came true.
"At our first practice session,
coach told us that we have the
ability to win the Limpopo league,
and that it is now up to us to
decide if we want to. We wanted
to win - very much, and so we
did," said bowler Rynard de
Lange.
Rassie Pretorius had a great
game, hitting a staggering 50 runs
from 44 balls, followed closely by
all-rounder Rynard de Lange with
40 runs off 28 balls not out.
Brandon Coetzer also accumulated 27 runs from 40 balls not
out.
Rynard and his quick ball-sense
gathered wickets one after the
other, taking 3 for the loss of 33
runs in 8 overs. Asad Patel took 2
wickets for the loss of 35 runs in 10
overs and Mubin Patel took the
remaining wicket for the loss of 17
runs in 4 overs. Keep reading next

Merensky introduces ‘Champions of Character’ programme
THE PLASIES are proud to announce the
implementation of the "Champions of Character" program as an important new development at the school.
The school management identified a need to
counter the extreme focus on winning at all
cost at school level (often at the expense of the
learners own development) and to rather focus
on developing a winning mind set within the
child - creating value that accompanies the
learner long after he or she has left the

Percy Du Toit, a renowned sports psychologist formerly of the University of the
North-West (Pukke) Sports Sciences institute,
researched and developed the program over a
20 year period. The program has already been
implemented by a number of prominent
schools in Gauteng, North West and Mphumalanga.
The programme, aptly named the "Champions of Character" which will be run over a
three year period, will be presented to the
entire school and not only the learners that
participate in sports.
It will focus on life skills that are important
not only in being successful in sport but also in

120 players from local companies as well as

Hans Merensky Golf Course, under the new
management of Signature Life Hospitality,
brings you exciting golf competitions in a
unique bushveld atmosphere.
Visitors and locals can now participate in
competitions every Wednesday sponsored by
Pick 'n Pay, and Saturday by numerous businesses in Phalaborwa.
Known for its location in the heart of the
bushveld, the course allows you to share your
experience with some of the course’s residents
such as giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and much
more of the wildlife.
The course, which has 18 holes, boasts an
award for the best walking course in the
country.
It offers a wide range of membership types in
an endeavour to cater for all different age
groups.
The club also allows non-members
to take part in the
competitions.
Currently, the club
has 131 members

The course hosts tournaments such as the
Annual Marula Festival golf, Maroela three

days and other sponsored days.
The new management is set to restore the
golf course to the standard it used to be in the
1980's, when Phalaborwa Classic (Sunshine
Tour) was played.

Hlanganani soccer tournament delivers loads of sporting fun Klub vereer speler
DURING the Hlanganani Trust soccer tournament, which drew 30
teams to participate, the guys and girls from Mahela Farm managed to
walk away with both trophies. Here is the Shaka Bundu team from the
farm Laparisa who beat the Plains ‘Laeveld Sitrus’ 2-0 on Sunday. They
received the Hlanganani Trust men’s trophy for winning.

TWO members of Tzaneen Cycling club performed well in their first stage race. Monica Roode
and Dorothy Rood teamed up to tackle the Isuzu 3 Towers Stage Race. They achieved a podium
finish on day 2 which consisted of a tough 52km’s and over 1,300 m’s of climbing. Unfortunately
they were just beaten to the post on day 3 and ended an overall credible 4th place which is
fantastic considering that this was their first stage race.
