Arts & Cultural Heritage Grants
The Prairie Lakes Regional Arts
Council is pleased to announce Arts and
Cultural
Heritage
Fund
grants
of $105,100 were awarded to seventeen
arts organizations, community groups,
and schools in the region. This fund
was created by the people of Minnesota
to support the arts and preserve our
heritage. The Clean Water, Land and
Legacy Amendment, passed by the
voters in Nov. 2008, created new
resources for land conservation, water
conservation, parks and the Arts.
Grants were awarded to non-profit arts
organizations, community groups, and
public schools for arts activities in
all artistic disciplines. A variety of
activities including arts classes, art
exhibitions, cultural festivals, dance
performances, music concerts, public
art, and theater performances were
funded.
New applications are available on the
PLRAC website after July 1st,
www.plrac.org, for the Arts and
Cultural Heritage (ACH) Grant. The
next ACH Grant deadline is August
1, 2015.

Arts and Cultural Heritage Grantees
clinicians for their semi-annual Summer Pops Camp and
Piano Institute; and will pay a portion of the Director’s
salary for their season of rehearsals and concerts in 2015. The Grand Center for Arts & Culture, New Ulm,
$8,000, will continue their 2015 performing arts series
which features a variety of Minnesota artists presenting a
variety of music genres each weekend and small theater
productions. They will also display six art exhibitions in
their 2nd floor gallery. Martin County - $8,000
Fairmont Opera House, $8,000, will sponsor Annie
Mack Blues from Rochester, MN; Zorongo Flamenco
Dancers from Minneapolis; and Shawn Johnson & His
Big Band Experience Holiday Show from Sauk Rapids
for the Subscription Performance Series productions in
Fall 2015. Nicollet County - $17,000
Govenaires Drum and Bugle Corps, $8,000, will
perform “Outlaw” in several Drum and Bugle Corps
competitions throughout Minnesota and the Midwest,
perform in several parades, and host the Drum Corps
Expo in August, 2015. Minnesota Over 60 Band,
$5,000, will perform in parades and concerts in
Minnesota cities during their 2015 season and purchase
shirts and music stands for the members. Rock Bend
Folk Festival, $4,000, will sponsor a two-day festival
featuring local and regional Minnesota folk musicians on
two stages, and local artists displaying work on
September 12-13, 2015, at Minnesota Square Park, St.

Blue Earth County - $48,100
Arts ’n More Festival, Amboy, $4,000, will present a
weekend arts festival to promote art, music, and dance in
their community, Sept. 11-13, 2015. CityArt Walking
Sculpture Tour, Mankato, $8,000, will sponsor the
juried exhibit of 30 outdoor sculptures in downtown
Mankato and North Mankato from May 2015 to April
2016. Dance Conservatory of Southern Minnesota,
$8,000, will maintain their current classes, expand their
summer dance programs, and produce a new winter show
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” in December 2015.
Mankato Area 77 Lancers Band, $8,000, will present
their 37th season as the premier youth marching band for
the greater Mankato area, perform in over 20 community
events and parades, purchase some marching piccolos and
mellophones, and provide scholarships. Mankato Area
Community Band, $4,100, will present six free outdoor
concerts at Sibley Park in Mankato on Tuesday evenings
in June and July 2015 and a concert at the Blue Earth
County Courthouse. Mankato Ballet Company, $8,000,
will present four shows of “The Nutcracker” for their 30th
Anniversary with live music by the Mankato Symphony
Orchestra, at the Ted Paul Theatre, MN State University,
Mankato; December 2015. Minnesota State University,
Mankato Music Performance Series, $8,000, will
sponsor six music performances by Minnesota artists as
part of their 2015-16 Performance Series. This will also
include outreach activities at two area schools by some of
the performing artists, and a presentation for the
community.

New Ulm Suzuki School of Music, $8,000, will hire

Gaylord Area Chamber of Commerce, $4,000,
will sponsor “Music on Main” with ten concerts by
Minnesota musicians in downtown Gaylord from
May to October, 2015. Green Isle Community
School, $4,000, will sponsor an Artist in Residency
where students interview two elders from the
community and work with local artists to create
plays and music based on the elder’s lives. Public
performance of the plays will be May 21, 2015. Sibley East Public School, $4,000, will host a
regional Elementary Art Show at Gustavus

PLRAC Grant Programs for Fiscal Year 2016
Sibley LeSueur Nicollet Brown Watonwan Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants
Deadlines are: Aug. 1 and Feb. 1
Martin 1. Arts and Arts Access – Maximum $8,000.
Proposals are for arts programming by an organization;
defined as maintaining on-going arts programs and
services, and offering new and different activities; and
equipment that enhances the artistic capabilities of the
organization. Equipment may include office equipment
and software, instruments, risers, theater lighting, theater
curtains, sound system, display cases, etc. This also
includes public art, sculpture, murals, etc; and activities
that plan to reach new audiences such as youth, ethnic
groups, senior citizen groups, etc. and engage the public
in new ways. 50% cash match required.
Waseca Faribault Small Arts Project Grants
Non-profit arts organizations, community groups, or
public organizations producing or sponsoring arts
activities for their community are eligible. These are
matching grants up to $2,500 and may not exceed 75% of
the project cost. Fundable activities include: community
bands, choirs & theatres; dance activities; literary
readings, visual arts exhibitions and classes; etc. These
project grants cannot be used for general operating
support or capital equipment expenses.
Deadline: 1st of each month.
2. ACH Arts Education:
There are three categories of support.
A. Schools – Maximum $4,000. This is available to all
public or private non-parochial elementary, middle or
secondary schools (K-12) in the nine county area. The
focus is to provide educational partnerships between local
and regional professional artists, arts organizations and
(K-12) schools. 10% cash match is required for schools.
Arts-In-Education Grants
Grants are for public and private schools. Matching
grants up to $2,500 are available to fund residencies, live
art performances, mini-workshops or arts related field
trips. Deadline: 1st of each month.
B. Non-profit and Community Groups – $4,000
C. Youth Scholarship for Students (7-12) – $300 For
students in grades 7-12, they have the opportunity to
study their chosen art with a practicing professional artist,
attend an arts workshop, series of classes, etc. This is for
all Art disciplines. Deadline October 1.
PLRAC/McKnight Artist Grants
Grants are for specific projects that contribute directly to
an Artists growth and professional development.
Deadlines are:
September 15 - Fellowship Grant, $3,000 each.
3. ACH Arts & Music Festivals - Maximum $4,000.
For arts and music festivals and activities that represent
diverse ethnic and cultural arts traditions.
50% cash match required.
January 15 - Emerging Artist Grant, $1,000 each.
4. ACH Legacy Equipment Grant - $5,000 (max.)
This is available to Nonprofit Arts Organizations that
have a history of at least three years of arts programming.
Items which improve and increase the artistic capabilities
of the organization are eligible. Deadline December 1.

The Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council is pleased to
announce that eleven Arts and Cultural Heritage
Equipment & Facilities Grants totaled $44,712. The
organizations represent five different counties.
Community Center, Mankato. Riverblenders Chorus of
Mankato, $4,860. They will purchase five sets of risers
and back rails, a speaker, a hand held remote microphone
system, and a microphone carrying case.
Blue Earth County - $25,031. Dance Conservatory of
Southern Minnesota, Mankato, $5,000. They will
replace the dance room floor in studio 2. Mankato Area
Community Band, $355. They will purchase a new seat
for the drummer to sit on and a new set of high quality
crash cymbals. Mankato Area Youth Symphony
Orchestra, $3,280. They will purchase a wood piccolo
for a student to use and purchase a Mac Computer and
software. Mankato Ballet Company, $5,000. They will
replace the dance floor in their studio. Mankato
Children’s Chorus, $2,046. They will purchase a new
keyboard, stand, and amplifier for traveling with the
group; file cabinets for music and materials; and
computer software to design their own marketing
materials. Merely Players Community Theatre, $4,490.
They will replace the lights in the theatre as well as safety
cables for their theatre productions at Lincoln
Brown County. State Street Theater Company,
formerly New Ulm Actors Community Theatre, $5,000.
They will purchase new theater curtains for the recently
acquired State Street Theater.
Martin County. Red Rock Center for the Arts,
Fairmont, $4,681. They will replace the carpet in the
lower level art room with vinyl flooring to improve their
classroom space.
Nicollet County. Arts Center of Saint Peter, $5,000.
They will move the floor drain in the basement and erect a
new wall in the basement to increase artwork hanging
space in the lower gallery.
Waseca County. Waseca Arts Council, $5,000. They
will update lighting in the lobby gallery area and add
outlets to the green room and second floor auditorium to
increase its usability for arts and music programs.

Emerging Artist Grants
of $13,000 Awarded
Thirteen artists recently received an Emerging
Artist Grant of $1,000 each. The purpose of the
PLRAC/McKnight Emerging Artist Grant is to
provide financial support to developing artists
committed to advancing their work and careers.
An alphabetical list of the thirteen artist grantees
and a brief description of their projects are listed
below. The next deadline is January 15, 2016.
Angela Archer, North Mankato. Angela is writing
and illustrating a children’s book titled, “Ornery
Goes Home”, is about a buffalo named Ornery
who is about to move to Minneopa State Park.
She will use funds to broaden her skills in
illustration, print drafts of the book to send to
publishers and attend critique sessions of the
Society of Children’s Book Writers in the Twin
Cities. She will also print and frame several
illustrations and display them locally.
Patricia Beilke, Morgan. Patricia will use funds to
attend the National Basketry Organization’s
Biennial Conference at Macalester College, St.
Paul, in July 2015. She will expand her basketry
skills and develop free form sculptures that
include antlers. She will display her new work at
the GSR Fine Arts Festival in December 2015 and
in other exhibitions.
Bruce Blaisdell, Mankato. Bruce creates his
wooden vessels with a lathe and he will use funds
to purchase a new Nova DVR lathe. He will
exhibit his work at the Carnegie Art Center,
Mankato and at Stone’s Throw Gallery, St. Peter
Kay Herbst Helms, Mankato. Kay will re-print
photographs from her “Hands Portraits” series in a
larger format. She will use funds for photographic
paper, ink, matte board and to attend the Fine Art
Digital Printing Workshop. She will display her
work at the Carnegie Art Center, Mankato in fall
2015.
John Hurd, North Mankato. John is a writer and
will use funds to pay an editor to evaluate his
work. The focus of his writings is on events that
happened on an old farm place southwest of
Mankato. He will do readings of his work at the
Writer’s Bloc in Mankato.
Taylor Johnson, North Mankato. Taylor will
create a new body of acrylic and mixed media
paintings and purchase a variety of art supplies to
create the work in 2015. He will have an
exhibition of the work at the 410 Project in
Mankato.

Laurie Zallek Knight, Mankato. Laurie will create a new body of
artwork with prints and designs on paper, fabric, wood and other
materials. She will purchase a variety of art supplies to create the
work in 2015, and have an exhibition at the 410 Project in Mankato in
2016.
April Malphurs, St. Peter. April is a glass artist and will use funds to
attend a furnace glass blowing class at Foci-Minnesota Center for
Glass Arts in Minneapolis; and hot shop rental fee and supplies. She
will exhibit her work at the Carnegie Art Center and at the Southern
MN Children’s Museum, Mankato.
David Olson, Madison Lake. David will create four new oil paintings
and transition to this new medium. He will purchase a variety of art
supplies to create and frame the work and exhibit the work in shows in
the Mankato and St Peter area.
Colin Scharf, Mankato. Colin is a writer and plans to expand and
revise his coming-of-age novel “The Big Time” by spending time
writing at the Anderson Writing Center in Red Wing and paying an
editor to critique his manuscript. He will do readings in March 2016
at the Coffee Hag and Carnegie Art Center in Mankato, and at the
Arts Center of Saint Peter.
Laura Schultz, Mankato. Laura is a musician playing rhythm guitar
and singing with the band Good Night, Gold Dust. She will use funds
for recording costs and promoting the new work. Their group will be
performing at locations in Mankato in 2015.
Richard Theissen, St. Peter. Richard will create a new body of
acrylic waterfowl paintings and purchase Masonite panels and frames,
for an exhibition entitled “Waterfowl Studies”. He will have an
exhibit at the Arts Center of Saint Peter and Emy Frentz Arts Gallery
at Twin Rivers Council for the Arts, Mankato, 2016.
E. Jack Williams, Waseca. Jack is a playwright and funds will be
used to stage his dramatic short play “The Prisoner’s Hands”, at the
Waseca Art Center, June 12-14, 2015. The cast will include local
talent of young and mature adults from the surrounding area.

Photographing Your Own Work
Thursday, May 21

At: Carnegie Art Center, 120 S. Broad, Mankato.
The first meeting will take place Thurs. May 14,
from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Learn to photograph your own visual art work. Do
you have trouble taking good pictures of your
artwork for your portfolio? Do you have quality
images you can submit to galleries or work samples
you can submit for an Artist Grant to Prairie
Lakes? If you’d like to improve your skills on
taking pictures of your artwork, this class is for
you. Attendees will learn about composition, setup, lighting, and image quality. The presenter will
discuss Tips for photographing 2D and 3D
artwork. Presenter is Wes Taylor, photographer
and Professor of Art/Multimedia, at South
Central College, North Mankato.
This workshop and 6-week mentorship is geared
toward Emerging writers that are planning to apply
for a Prairie Lakes Emerging Artist Grant in Jan.
2016 and need to improve and polish their written
work sample for submission. It could also assist
writers in submitting work for publication, which
could be added to their Resume. Writers in all
literary genres (fiction, non-fiction, playwriting and
poetry) are eligible. However, there is a limit of 6
participants. Presenter and mentor will be Ann
Rosenquist Fee, Executive Director of the Arts
Center of Saint Peter. Ann has a MA, MFA and is a
past teaching artist at The Loft Literary Center in
Minneapolis and a former adjunct instructor at MN
State University, Mankato. Additional writers may be
added as mentors depending on students’ genres and
experience levels.

Participants are required to attend three group
meetings (May 14, June 11 & June 25, 5-7 p.m.) and
participate in one-on-one communication with the
mentor via email and phone.

New Study Looks At Impact of Arts
on South Central Minnesota’s Economy
We had 29 Arts Advocates attend the “Creative MN”
Report on the Economic Impact of the Arts on March 2nd
in Mankato, noted Brenda Byron, Exec. Director PLRAC.
The 89 area organizations that participated in the
"Creative Minnesota" study support 348 full-time jobs in
the nine-county region, generating more than $13.6
million in economic impact. More than 358,000 people
attend nonprofit arts and cultural events annually in the
region, which includes: Fairmont, Mankato, North
Mankato, New Ulm, St. Peter and Waseca. As the most comprehensive report ever done about the
sector’s health and economic impact, Creative
Minnesota: The Health and Impact of the Nonprofit
Arts and Culture Sector breaks out data both statewide
and regionally. The Creative Minnesota report is a
snapshot of spending by nonprofit arts and culture
organizations and their audiences as well as other
indicators of the sector’s health and impact on the
economy in 2013. Download the report at
www.creativemn.org. The study quantifies the economic
impact from 1,269 arts and culture organizations in every
corner of the state, in addition to information about jobs
created, local vs. non-local attendees spending, nonprofit
arts and culture organizational budgets, and artist
employment levels; and the total statewide Economic
Impact is $1.2 Billion.
Creative Minnesota was developed by a collaborative of
arts and culture funders in partnership with Minnesota
Citizens for the Arts (MCA). The report leverages new
opportunities for in depth research provided by
Minnesota’s participation in the Cultural Data Project
www.culturaldata.org. Many public and private grant
makers in Minnesota require some or all of their arts and
culture grantees to submit data to the CDP.
Lill Robinson Honored as Board President
We will be saying goodbye to Lill Robinson who has served
six years and been president of the Prairie Lakes Board. “We
appreciate Lill’s commitment and dedication to the board and
especially her leadership as president”, noted Brenda Byron,
Executive Director. It’s also a well-known fact that Lill has a
great ability to keep the grant review meetings on time and
she does it with wit and humor! That’s not surprising since
Lill has been a long time actress with the Blue Earth Town
and Country Players. She will be honored at the May 28th
board meeting.

The Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council has openings
on the Board of Directors for representatives from
Faribault County and the City of Fairmont. The
deadline for submitting an application is June 15,
2015. Interested persons residing in these areas should
contact Brenda Byron, Executive Director of PLRAC

out more about our board and we will send you an
application and a list of responsibilities. The
Council seeks to appoint people who represent a crosssection of art forms as well as various arts
perspectives: artists, art teachers, and representatives
of arts organizations. Board members serve a threeyear term with a maximum of two terms. Monthly
evening meetings are held the fourth Thursday of
the month, in Mankato, at Bethany Lutheran
College. Board members are reimbursed for their
mileage to meetings. Attendance at several PLRAC
funded arts events per year is required.
