Using the NPOA
Parking Lot
Hooray! The new parking lot is
here. What a great thing. Not once
did we run out of parking over the
holidays though there were a few
bugs to work out.
• You absolutely need your blue
plastic access card to swipe at the
gate to let yourself in.
• If for any reason your card is not
working, there is an intercom button
located right next to the card reader
on the pedestal.
• The flow through the lot is one-way
traffic. The entrance is located at the
south end of the parking lot across
from the fi rst aid clinic.
• When exiting, drive slowly up
to the exit gate and it will open
automatically. There is a pressure
sensor in the pavement.
• No ski parking is allowed in the
Rec Center parking lot. The lot is for
short term, Rec Center use only.
• No over night parking is allowed.
• No “piggy backing”. Only one
vehicle may enter per swipe.
• Please inform your renters that
they must use the shuttle to get to
the Rec Center unless
you have made
a blue access
card available
for their use.

Recreation Center
Etiquette
Here are some Do’s and Don’ts regarding use of the Rec. Center:
Do’s:
• Bring your blue plastic access card.
Each card allows four people to enter
the facility.
• Use the sign up sheets for the cardio
equipment. The time limit is 30 minutes
if anyone is waiting.
• Wipe down any equipment that you
use with the
disinfectant in
the spray bottle
located beneath
the magazine
rack.
• Be polite and
patient.
The gym can get crowded at times.
Also be aware that while you may be
hot and wish to keep a window wide
open, another user may be cold. The
same courtesy should be observed in
relation to the volume of the TV.
• Wear close toed shoes.
• Smile and say “Hi” to those
around you.
Don’ts:
• Do not bring any glass
into the facility. Broken
glass in a spa or pool is a
serious problem. Plastic cups
are available at the entry desk.
Glass is a zero tolerance issue.
• Do not monopolize a machine(s).
If you are doing circuit training you
may need to be patient if the gym is
crowded.
• Do not throw snowballs. The
errant throw may involve someone
who does not wish to play.
• Do not run. Footing may be icy
or slippery.
• Do not bring snow into the spa.
Enough snow will bring down the
water temperature making the
heaters work harder, use more
fuel and degrade the experience
for other users.
• Do not allow under age drinking.
Notify staff if you observe this
behavior.
Following these instructions will
make your visit easy and enjoyable.
A visit to the Rec Center after skiing
or boarding is a great way to end your
day.

mountain v i e w s
2005 will see the unveiling of a star-quality base village
As I write our quarterly update to
you, the snow continues to fall here
at Northstar and skiers and riders
are enjoying magnificent conditions.
We kicked off the 2004-05 winter
season with a ribbon-cutting ceremony
for the new Village Express lift that
replaced the 26-year-old Echo triple
chairlift. The Dopplemayer high-speed
quad has alleviated the crowding
that we used to see on busy days
near the Village and is transporting
guests to mid-mountain in half
the time.
You all are also enjoying our
unique and high-energy Village Plaza.
As you know, we invested almost $1.5
million to create a colorful, inviting
and full-service base area during
village construction. The feedback I’ve
received from guests and home-owners
alike is that Village Plaza is providing
8
Northstar L i v i n g
top-notch skier and guest services in
addition to a fun après ski scene and
tasty dining options.
Looking forward, I want to give
you a glimpse of the Northstar village
we’ll unveil at the start of the 200506 season. If you haven’t already
met Heath Nielsen, you will in the
days and weeks ahead. Heath, our
new vice president of commercial
property, is spearheading our efforts
to create an unparalleled base village
atmosphere with commercial tenants
complementing a variety of village
activities.
Our revitalized village is being built
in two phases, with Phase 1 being
completed by this December and
Phase 2 in December of 2006. At buildout, the Village will include seven new
buildings, with 213 condominiums.
A full-service spa will be one compo-

nent of the 130,000 square feet of
retail space. Here’s what you have to
look forward to:
The Village at Northstar
Outdoor fire pits, outdoor restaurant
seating and a new ice-skating rink will
set the tone while our commitment
to being “green” will create the mood.
The new Village at Northstar is being
built in accordance with guidelines
of the Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design rating system
established by the U.S. Green Building
Council, of which East West Partners
– the Village’s developer – is a member.
Phase 1 includes three buildings: Iron
Horse North and South include 72
condominiums with commercial space
on the ground floor. The Great Bear
Lodge includes 28 condominiums,
shops, restaurants and an ice-skating
rink.
Enhanced skier services
Guests will have several options to
choose from throughout the winter
and summer seasons with regard
to skier services. From overnight
equipment storage to season lockers
to changing rooms with boot driers
and Internet access to concierge and
tuning services, The Outpost will
meet your needs and exceed your
expectations.
The village scene
A flagship North Face store will
feature all North Face products,
from Randonnee, telemark and
alpine equipment to clothing and
outerwear. An Oakley-inspired, “O”
concepts store will carry all things
Oakley, from eyewear to outwear
to footwear to lifestyle apparel. A
new and expanded 6,500-squarefoot NorthSport store will carry
Northstar-logo items, adult clothing
and equipment. A children’s version
of NorthSport will feature Spyder and
Obermeyer. A lively lifestyle store
will feature hip clothing for all winter
enthusiasts.
The dining scene will feature a 140seat pizzeria offering pasta dishes
and salads; a fine dining restaurant;
a Mexican restaurant; a sushi den;
and a gourmet grocery and wine
shop (offering high-end carry-out).
Smoothies, an ice cream parlor and
a nationally-recognized coffee house
will round out the eclectic dining
options.
The village will also boast
art
galleries
featuring
local
photographers as well as fine art,
5,000 square feet of dedicated
conference facilities that can be
broken up into smaller rooms, and a
2,000-square-foot arcade.
These are exciting times but as our
transformation continues, please do
not hesitate to contact me with any
questions!

Preheat oven to 400°F.
1. For the Filling: Place a
large sautè pan over medium
heat; add the butter and heat
through. Stir in the chopped
mushrooms and cook until
softened, about 4 to 5 minutes.
Transfer to a large bowl and
set aside until needed.
2. In the same pan, cook the
ground meats over medium
heat until no longer pink, about
5 to 7 minutes. Remove the
meat with a slotted spoon
and transfer to the bowl with
the mushrooms. Pour off
most of the fat, then sauté
the onions in the remaining
fat until tender, about 5
minutes. Cool completely.
3. Mix the onions, parsley,
grated cheese and milk into the
bowl with the mushroom-meat
mixture. Season to taste with
salt and pepper, then allow to
cool to room temperature.
4. To Assemble the Turnovers:
Lay one sheet of pastry on a
parchment or silicone matlined baking sheet. Form the
meat mixture into a firm and
compact narrow loaf down
the center of the dough.
Leave a 1-inch border of
pastry around the meat.
5. Ease the second sheet of
pastry over the meat. Trim
and press the edges with
your fingers or a fork. Roll

6. Bake in the preheated oven
until golden brown, about

Cut into thick slices and
serve with crème fraîche (or

Make It Light: Reduce
the butter to 1 tablespoon,
substitute 1 pound of ground

From the tennis staff at the
NPOA Recreation Center, we hope
everyone had a safe and happy
holiday! We have seen many of
you on the slopes and what a ski
season it has been!
We are very proud to be selected
as a top 10 tennis resort by Tennis
Week magazine. Gene Scott, a
legend in the industry (editor and
owner of the magazine, brought
his family for a week vacation to
Northstar. They fell in love with
everything! They raved about the
place we call home in the summer
and wrote a very nice article. I
would like to thank everyone
involved for making their and
many others vacation memorable.
Malcolm Ridenour and I attended
the 2004 Annual World Tennis
Teacher conference in La Quinta,
California where we learned many
great ideas, attended clinics,
participated in tournaments, made
great contacts, and much more. It
will be nice to share new, fresh
cutting edge approaches to the
game with all of you this spring,
summer and fall. Staff is already
meeting to discuss our strategies
and programming for the upcoming
season.
Please excuse the delay in the
new tennis website. We are in the
process of remodeling and hope you
will enjoy the new look. It should
be up and running by the time you
receive this newsletter. Please visit
us at www.northstartennis.com.
I would also like to thank the
NPOA Board of Directors, Kit
Kelly, Nancy Barna, Jeff App, and
all the other employees for the
support and making our jobs so
enjoyable!

Histor
By David Brown
Less than 200 years ago the west was
uninhabited and unexplored by anyone
other than Indians. The earliest white
men to venture into the wild west
were mountain men (trappers and
explorers), the most famous of whom
were Jedediah Smith, John Fremont,
James Beckwourth, and Kit Carson.
But there was another extraordinary
mountain man about whom little has
been written: Caleb Greenwood.
Greenwood, known among early
trappers as “Old Greenwood,” was born
in 1763 and hailed from Virginia. Little
is known about his early years but we
do know that he first entered Indian
country in 1807 at the age of 44.
His first venture into California was
in 1826, but his most distinguishing
contribution to the exploration of the
west came when he guided the StevensTownsend-Murphy party to California
in 1844…at the age of 81.
Most
important, the party would never have
reached their destination without him.
His knowledge of the country and
the habits, language, and signs of
Indian tribes in the territory through
which they had to pass saved the party
when they were met by a large band
of Indians “whose warlike appearance
seemed to indicate trouble.” According
to author Charles Kelly, “…the men
seized their rifles with the intention of
giving battle. If they had commenced
firing, as they planned to do, the whole
company would probably have been
massacred.” Instead, Old Greenwood
commanded the men to hold their fire.
Then he stepped out alone, approached
the Indians and began speaking in sign
language, indicating his party was
friendly and wished to pass quietly
through the country. As a result of
his knowledge and demeanor, they
negotiated, smoked the peace pipe,
distributed presents to the warriors,
and the party was allowed to continue
without incident.
His ability to communicate with the
Indians greatly helped the party on
another occasion. While camped at the
Humboldt Sink (west of Winnemucca,
NV) he gathered information from
the Paiutes about the country ahead.
It was there that he met “Truckee”, a
Paiute chief who told of a river that
came down out of the Sierra, directly
west from where they were camped,
where they would find a pass. Chief
Truckee guided the wagon trail along
with Old Greenwood to the base of what
is now Donner Pass. Even though they
encountered severe weather conditions
and nearly impassible granite, they
did eventually safely reached Sutter’s
Fort. Kelly recounts, “The Sierra had
been crossed by emigrant wagons for
the first time”—the year was 1844, two
years before the Donner Party crossed
the same pass.
Caleb Greenwood’s historic leadership has been memorialized today by
East West Partners in a new golf and
residential development just east of
Truckee called Old Greenwood.
