PARCC TESTING
Due to network issues, our 7th and 8th graders were not able to PARCC test this week. We believe these
issues have been resolved and our revised testing schedule follows:
 Testing for our 6th graders will begin on Monday, April 11th and run through Wednesday, April 13th.
 Testing for our 7th and 8th graders will now take place on Monday, April 18th through Wednesday,
April 20th.
 Make up testing will start on Monday, April 25th.
Thank you to the entire Wredling Community for your flexibility with testing and running alternate
schedules. If you have any questions, please call the main office at (331) 228-3700.
THIRD QUARTER REPORT CARDS ARE NOW AVAIBLE IN THE HOME ACCESS CENTER
If you have not taken a look at your student’s third quarter report card, please do so. This student data
was posted in the Home Access Center right before Spring Break. As we begin the “final stretch” of the
year, this is a great time to have a conversation with your middle schooler about his or her progress. If you
are having trouble accessing HAC please contact the main office. If you have any questions about your
child’s performance, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teachers.
THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL HAS BEGUN
This week we began the transition to middle school for our 5th grade parents. Last night the first of two
5th grade parent meetings took place. If you are aware of “any soon to be 6th grade parents” out there
who were unaware of this meeting, please encourage them to attend the next 5th grade parent night which
will take place on Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30pm in the Wredling Cafeteria.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION REMINDERS
All Physical Education students should be taking their PE uniforms home on Fridays to be washed.
Uniforms should be brought back for class on Mondays. Also, as spring weather takes hold, please be
aware that PE classes will be going outside if the temperature is above 40 degrees. Please remind your son
or daughter to bring in cold weather clothing such as sweatpants and sweatshirts. They are encouraged to
be worn on the cooler spring days ahead.
Enjoy your weekend!

SUMMER CULINARY CAMP
The middle school Family & Consumer Science Department is sponsoring a Culinary Camp for
incoming D303 7th & 8th grade students who enjoy cooking and want to expand their culinary
skills. A morning and afternoon session will be offered June 6th-9th from 9:00am to noon and
12:30-3:30pm at Thompson Middle School. There will be an advanced camp offered this year for
students that attended Culinary Camp last summer or the first session of camp. It will be
held June 13th-16th from 9:00am-12:00pm at Thompson Middle School. Each session is limited to
the first 24 students who enroll. The flyer for the camp is attached.
CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST
The American Association of University Women Batavia-Geneva-St. Charles branch recently honored
middle-school students for their original fiction, non-fiction, and poetry writing. The winners were selected
from more than 300 entries into the student-writing contest, which the association has hosted annually for
37 years.
Wredling award recipients are:
Seventh-grade fiction: Tabitha Franzetti (first place)
Seventh grade poetry: Mia Vavaroutsos (third place)
Eighth grade non-fiction: Jake Miller (first place)
Eighth grade non-fiction: Natalie Smith (third place)
Also, Madalyn Mavigliano, Stefani Paladino, and Christina Hull received honorable mention
awards for their entries. Congratulations to all of our Redhawk Writers!
MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMITS
District 303 will conduct three Summit 303 Community Meetings focused on facility issues at middle
schools on April 14, 18, and 21. The purpose of the meetings is to gather community input on how the
District 303 community can address middle school building shortcomings, such as outdated science labs,
lack of air conditioned classrooms, small cafeterias, and aging mobile classrooms.
Input from middle school parents is crucial because of your current knowledge of the middle school
experience for students in District 303. We would like to see as many middle school parents as possible at
these meetings. Also, please encourage any of your neighbors who do not have students in District 303 to
attend one of these meetings.
The District 303 Board of Education is seeking to consolidate from three middle schools to two in order to
save an estimated $2.4 million per year while also enhancing the educational experience for students.
These meetings will use the Summit 303 format in which those attending will be presented with facts
about the middle school issues. After the presentation, Summit 303 attendees will then work in small
groups to determine consensus points about how those issues might be resolved.
The schedule for Middle School Summit is: (The meetings will be similar, you can attend any of the three
meetings)
Thursday, April 14

6:30-8:30 p.m.
Monday, April 18
Haines Middle School
6:30-8:30 p.m.
Thursday, April 21

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Illness and injury often necessitates that students miss school days. If your child is absent for a
period of days, we ask that you provide the Health Office with documentation from your health
care provider reflecting the reason for the absence. The Regional Board of Education (ROE)
requires schools in Kane County to report student absences to them that exceed average
absentee rates. When there is supporting medical documentation for your child’s absences, the student
support team is able to determine the circumstances for any prolonged and/or frequent absences and
waive the need to alert the ROE. Without such evidence, the team is obligated to report excessive
absences, which may generate a letter of inquiry from the ROE regarding your child’s absence from school.
The Student Support Team and staff are committed to fostering good attendance habits in all our students
because we know that good attendance is one of the biggest factors in influencing academic and life
success.
Research studies have consistently indicated the following benefits of regular school attendance:
• Achievement: Students who attend school regularly are more likely to experience academic
success in general and more likely to pass standardized reading and math assessments than
students with frequent absences.
• Opportunity: Being in school every day gives students a chance to participate in school sports
and clubs. For older students, it provides a chance to learn more about college and scholarship
opportunities and to take the important exams they need to build a successful academic record.
• Being part of the school community: Just by being present at school, students learn how to be a
good citizen by participating in the school community, learning valuable social skills, and
developing a broader world view.
• The importance of education: A parent’s commitment to school attendance sends the message
that education is a priority for their child. It also imparts the message that going to school every
day is a critical part of attaining educational success and assuring opportunities for future life
success.
Thank you for your assistance in supporting excellent school attendance and do not hesitate to refer your
questions or concerns regarding your child’s attendance to an administrator, teacher, or member of the
school support team.

ILLINOIS YOUTH SURVEY FOR 8TH GRADERS
Wredling Middle School and Community Unit School District 303 are working with the Center for
Prevention Research and Development at the University of Illinois to conduct a survey of Illinois middle and
high school students. The purpose of the Illinois Youth Survey is to better understand Illinois youth risk
and protective behaviors as they relate to student problems and academic success. The survey will be
given to 8th grade students only, and it will be conducted on Friday, April 15, 2016.
If your child participates, he/she will be asked to complete a survey (with no names or identification
numbers) that will be confidentially administered by a classroom teacher, counselor, or administrator. The
survey is completely voluntary, and privacy will be strictly protected. Students will be given a paper and
pencil survey in a regular classroom, and it will last about 45 minutes. If there are any questions your child
does not wish to answer, he/she is free to skip questions or stop taking the survey at any time. Students
who do not wish to participate in the survey or whose parents choose to deny permission for their
participation will be provided with an appropriate alternative activity (e.g. reading in the school library or
quiet reading) while the survey is being administered. The staff will remind students of these rights before
the survey begins.
This questionnaire asks about:
 personal use of alcohol and other drugs, perception of risks, where accessed, consequences of
use, approval or disapproval of use
 students’ feelings about their school experience
 family and personal characteristics
 family communication about substance use
 feelings about self and moods
 student health behaviors – food intake, exercise, height, and weight
If you wish to see the survey, it is available for preview in your child’s school office. Obtaining full
participation is very important to your child’s school and community as it helps to improve programs and
strategies to prevent youth-problem behaviors and enhance youth development. While the survey asks
personal questions about illegal behavior, several steps are taken to protect the privacy of students
participating. Students can skip any or all questions if they feel uncomfortable, and survey administrators
will make efforts to ensure privacy during the survey completion process. Collecting information from
Illinois students has many benefits to youth in your community and throughout the state. Survey data is
provided back to your school to help determine what programs may be needed to keep students safe and
healthy.
The surveys will be administered in Illinois schools during the 2015-2016 academic school year. If you DO
NOT want your child to participate in the survey, please complete the Opt Out form your child brought
home, sign it, and return it to the school within 2 weeks. Your decision to deny permission will not in any
way influence your future relationship with your child’s school, and you may also withdraw your child
during the survey by notifying the school office.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Michael Cortina, Student Assistance Counselor
(Wredling Middle School) at 331-228-5800. If you have any questions regarding the project and wish to
contact a staff person at the University of Illinois, please contact Peter Mulhall at (888) 333-5612 (Illinois toll
free) or email him at [email protected]. If you have any questions about your son or daughter’s rights as
a participant in this study, please contact the University of Illinois Institutional Review Board at 217-3332670 (collect calls will be accepted if you identify yourself as a research participant) or via email
at [email protected].

Press Release
D303 Schedules “Middle School Summit”
Three Community Meetings will Discuss Possible Solutions
For Middle School Facilities Issues
March 23, 2016
St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 will conduct three Summit 303 Community
Meetings focused on facility issues at middle schools on April 14, 18, and 21. The purpose of the
meetings is to gather community input on how the District 303 community can address middle
school building shortcomings, such as; outdated science labs, lack of air conditioned classrooms,
small cafeterias and aging mobile classrooms.
The District 303 Board of Education is seeking to consolidate from three middle schools to
two in order to capture an operational savings of an estimated $2.4 million per year. The
consolidation is made possible by declining student enrollment in the District. Further, this
consolidation could also require approval of additional funds through a bond referendum, which
would be offset by the expiration of current bonds in 2018, and would still allow for taxpayers to
see a reduction in the District 303 portion of their property tax bill.
These meetings will use the Summit 303 format in which those attending the meeting will be
presented with facts about the middle school issues. After the presentation, Summit 303
attendees will then work in small groups to determine consensus points about how those issues
might be resolved. Each meeting will also provide the opportunity for attendees to “vote” on larger
issues through the placement of stickers on a display visible to all attendees.
The schedule for Middle School Summit is:
Thursday, April 14
Thompson Middle School
Monday, April 18
Haines Middle School
Thursday, April 21
Wredling Middle School
6:30-8:30 p.m.
6:30-8:30 p.m.
6:30-8:30 p.m.
The three meetings will contain the same content and can be attended by anyone in the
community who wishes at attend at their convenience.
The feedback from these meetings will then be presented to the Board of Education at a
Special Meeting of the Board on Monday, April 25, 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the District 303
Administration Building, 201 South 7th St., St. Charles IL 60174.
