A message from
President
Peter MacKinnon
I
want to express a very warm welcome to the graduates, families and friends who join us today.
Convocation is the University’s most important ceremony, for it is here that we celebrate the
accomplishments of our students and the contributions of their loved ones to their success. You
should be proud of this day, and of the commitment and sacrifice that it represents.
We at the University of Saskatchewan salute you—our graduates—and we extend to you our very best
wishes for the future. We hope that you will stay in touch with us through our University of Saskatchewan
alumni family, and that we will have the opportunity to welcome you ‘home’ to our campus many times in
the years ahead.
Warmest congratulations!

2004 Spring Convocation
The ceremony, solemnized in the presence of the
University community and family and friends of the
graduands, consists of three parts: a procession marking
the leaving of the old status and entering the new; the
President’s statement to the
graduands, the Secretary’s
petition and the Chancellor’s
consent for their admission;
followed by individual
presentation by their Dean and
admission by the Chancellor to
the degrees to which they are
entitled. As graduates are
admitted to their degrees, a
graduation hood, which has a
colour symbolizing a particular
degree, is placed over each
graduate’s head. A banner
displaying the University crest
is hung above the stage, as a
symbol of the University’s
authority to confer degrees.
T
he word “Convocation” arises from the Latin “con”
meaning “together,” and “vocare” meaning “to call.”
Our Convocation ceremony is a calling together of the
new graduates of the University
of Saskatchewan, symbolizing
the historical practice of calling
together all former graduates. In
current times, the major
functions of Convocation are
the election of representatives
to University governing bodies
and the admission of candidates
to degrees. The Chancellor,
elected by Convocation as its
Chair, is the highest official and
spokesperson of the University.
The Convocation ceremony
marks the transition from the
role of student to the holder of
a degree with its accompanying
rights and privileges.
Candidates for degrees, known
as graduands, having
completed the requirements of
a course of study, are
recommended by college
faculties and the University
Council to receive degrees from the University of
Saskatchewan.
Following the conferring of
degrees and acceptance of each
graduate as a member of
Convocation, a reception is
held—a celebration on the occasion of the formal
transition from the role of learner to the role of producer
and contributor in the field of the graduate’s choice.
We honour and welcome this year’s graduates!

John Thompson
community and work with rural people. I will work all of
my life to emulate with my social work clients the
teaching skill of Dr. Thompson.” A graduate student
notes, “John Thompson has been the single most
important educator in my life—by far.
I picked up his enthusiasm for learning
and it has made me more confident
and a better person.” Another effuses,
“the best evidence of the quality of a
professor’s teaching is found in the
lives of his students. The skills and
confidence I developed as a graduate
student under John’s supervision
resulted in the incredible opportunities
I have had since graduating. I am now
a faculty member at the University of
Lethbridge because of the academic
skills I developed under John’s
leadership.”
E
mphasizing the importance of teaching at the
University of Saskatchewan, the Master Teacher
Award honours faculty who excel as teachers. Professor
John Thompson, Department of Sociology, St. Thomas
More College, has been named as
recipient of this prestigious award at
Spring Convocation, 2004.
Professor Thompson earned his B.A.
in Philosophy from Spring Hill
College, Alabama; his M.A. in
Theology from the University of
Santa Clara, California; and his M.A.
and Ph.D. in Sociology from the
University of California, Santa
Barbara. He joined St. Thomas More
College at the University of
Saskatchewan in 1975, becoming a
Professor in 1993.
Dr. Thompson has a comprehensive
knowledge of his discipline,
demonstrating excellence in research,
publishing regularly in leading journals and presenting
the results of his research at learned conferences. All
Master Teachers are expected to be distinguished
researchers—however, student evaluations, comments by
colleagues and a distinguished teaching portfolio
demonstrate that Dr. Thompson is also a bright flame
among teachers at the University of Saskatchewan.
Most of his students remember “A Live
Sociologist at Work—Writing an Essay
in Class.” Using this technique,
Dr. Thompson, with the students, writes an essay from
scratch on the blackboard, demonstrating and discussing
the painstaking processes of academic writing. It is a
powerful and precarious teaching tool.
Professor Thompson has developed, in the words of
STM President George Smith, “a virtual obsession for
the welfare of students.” He has shown himself to be a
superb teacher and an excellent emissary of his
discipline, touching everyone he encounters with his
passion for sociology and his absolute ardour for the craft
and art of teaching. With the dedication he has
displayed and the legacy he is building, the University of
Saskatchewan enjoys great good fortune having such a
fine teacher on its faculty.
John not only teaches sociology, his teaching changes
lives. A former undergraduate states eloquently,
“Dr. Thompson taught me how to use my brain. He also
spent laborious hours teaching all of his students how to
write. In other classes, I was always very aware that I was
only a farmer’s wife with not much of a future.
Dr. Thompson showed me that I could use my
sociological imagination plus stay in my home

contractors on the systems for all new buildings on
campus, ensuring they meet campus requirements.
A
s the University of Saskatchewan campus has
grown over the past quarter century, a caring and
nurturing hand has ensured that its lifeblood—its
extensive mechanical systems—are designed and
operated in the best possible way for
students, faculty and staff.
Salisbury has seen great change at the University since 1978,
particularly the science buildings and the
extent of computerized controls in all
buildings. He has played an integral part
in upgrading the many systems involved
as new buildings were constructed,
including VIDO, Dentistry, a major
Engineering renovation, Place Riel,
Geology, the Diefenbaker Centre,
Agriculture, the Animal Resource
Centre, the Spinks Addition and the
Kinesiology Building. He is also
credited with helping to develop
energy conservation measures for the
mechanical systems that have saved
the University millions of dollars.
Senior Mechanical Engineer Howie
Salisbury, who joined the U of S as a
mechanical engineer in 1978 and was
promoted to the senior post in 1980,
has applied what his colleagues call
oustanding skill and dedication to his
management of this key University
infrastructure.
In recognition of his 26 years of
exemplary service, Salisbury is being
presented with the President’s Service
Award at the 2004 Spring
Convocation.
For Salisbury the excitement is seeing
an idea that begins just as a concept,
is developed into a design and then becomes an actual
operating structure on campus. Colleagues say that
Salisbury’s enthusiasm shows. He is a respected, positive
co-worker and a great listener who goes well beyond the
call of duty to apply his extensive engineering
knowledge and common sense to develop solutions for
people across campus. Salisbury is especially thankful for
the tremendous help he has received all along the way
from his co-workers in the Facilities Management
Division—the designers, planners, back-shop
tradespeople and many others.
Born and raised in Saskatoon,
Salisbury graduated from the College of Engineering at
the University of Saskatchewan in 1970. Over the next
eight years he worked for a local mechanical consulting
firm and operated his own consulting engineering
company before beginning his career with the University.
There are few indoor or outdoor nooks and crannies on
campus that Salisbury hasn’t been in over the years. His
responsibilities include providing engineering expertise
to the University’s heating plant, with its boilers for
steam heating and its water chillers for air conditioning.
He also oversees the massive network of campus water
lines, sanitary and storm sewers, steam and condensate
mains, ventilation, fire suppression systems and natural
gas lines. Salisbury also works with engineering firms and

related to health care in third-world countries. Through
these, she has raised the profile of health issues in these
countries, as well as health and social issues for First
Nations and Métis people.
T
he J. W. George Ivany Internationalization Award
was established by University of Saskatchewan
International to recognize outstanding contributions by a
member of the University’s academic or administrative
staff in furthering the process of
internationalization at the University
of Saskatchewan. The University is
delighted to honour, at the Spring
2004 Convocation, Professor Gerri
Dickson from the College of Nursing.
Dr. Dickson’s international work
continues to have a substantial impact
on health and development. Since
1991, she has been involved in a
CIDA-funded project that works to
strengthen STD/AIDS control in
Kenya. She also took a lead role in
securing CIDA funding for the Training
for Health Renewal Program, a hugely
successful project now in its sixth year
aimed at building capacity in
Mozambique and engaging the
participating Canadian institutions in
the use of innovative approaches to
education and practice of health
workers. A unique feature of this
project is the support and involvement
of the health sciences programs at the
University of Saskatchewan, including participation of
faculty and staff members in a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning. Faculty
and students from the University of Saskatchewan
participate in the education programs of the Mozambican
project site, as well as an inter-disciplinary health sciences
community practica in an inner-city neighbourhood.
Dr. Dickson received her B.S.N. and
Ph.D. from the University of
Saskatchewan and her M.P.H. from
the University of Hawaii. She came to
the College of Nursing in 1986 with a
rich history of international and crosscultural work, including community
development in the Solomon Islands,
coordination of nutrition and maternal
child health projects in Papua, New
Guinea, and health worker education
in Mozambique.
During Dr. Dickson’s 18 years at the University of
Saskatchewan, she has worked tirelessly to enhance the
international and cross-cultural perspectives of faculty
and students on campus. Dr. Dickson was instrumental
in the creation of the national Native Access Program to
Nursing in 1987, a program that has resulted in a
significant increase in the number of Aboriginal students
who have become nurses. During her Ph.D. research, she
established a network of self-help groups for First
Nations women living with abuse.
Through Dr. Dickson’s passionate work, she has
succeeded in engaging the University of Saskatchewan
in important health-care initiatives at home and around
the world—showing us all what the spirit of
internationalization can accomplish.
Dr. Dickson has delivered, in the University community
and far beyond, hundreds of lectures and presentations

Jasrajbir Singh Baath
(Silver Medal)
Angela Baerwald
(Gold Medal)
J
asrajbir was born in Punjab (India) and moved to
Canada in 1991. He graduates with a Bachelor of
Science Three-year Degree with Great Distinction with
a major in Biochemistry. Jasrajbir is the recipient of the
2004 Spring Convocation Three-year Degree Medal as
the most distinguished graduate in the College of
Arts & Science graduating with a Three-year Degree.
A
Jasrajbir has been the recipient of numerous awards and
scholarships during his academic career at the University
of Saskatchewan. These awards include: the Arts &
Science ASSET Scholarship, the Dr. Valentine Guy
Criswick Scholarship, the SaskPower Scholarship,
University of Saskatchewan Undergraduate
Scholarships, just to name a few. Jasrajbir has also been
named on the Dean’s Honour List every year, and
received a NSERC Undergraduate Research Award in
2002, 2003 and 2004.
Angela’s thesis work characterized ovarian function in
women during natural menstrual cycles. The most
exciting accomplishment of this study was the discovery
that follicles within the ovary develop at more than one
time during the menstrual cycle, a phenomenon never
before documented. The results of this study received
national and international recognition and have
provided a new model for studying ovarian function in
women. It is anticipated that the knowledge of follicular
waves may change the way in which ovarian follicular
development is stimulated in women undergoing
treatment for infertility. Angela’s work also included the
study of women taking oral contraception. The results of
her work have increased our understanding of the
biologic mechanisms underlying follicular growth in
women, and provided insight into the mechanisms
underlying emergency contraception.
ngela Baerwald was born in Rosetown,
Saskatchewan in 1975. She was raised on a farm
near Elrose, where she attended elementary and high
school. Angela received a B.Sc. (Honours) in Physiology
in 1997 from the University of Saskatchewan, followed
by a Doctor of Philosophy in Obstetrics, Gynecology and
Reproductive Sciences in 2003.
He has also been very active as a volunteer at the
Emergency Ward at the Royal University Hospital, the
Saskatchewan Association for the Rehabilitation of the
Brain Injured (SARABI), at the Hantleman Building
Psychiatric Ward as well as volunteering regularly for
on-campus activities such as the Alumni Reunion,
Orientation and Shinerama.
Angela is currently pursuing postdoctoral work in the
Division of Reproductive Medicine at the Ottawa Civic
Hospital at the University of Ottawa. Outside of her
academic life, she plays the piano and she and her
husband enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including
hiking, swimming, water-skiing, downhill skiing, curling,
baseball and time spent at the lake with friends and
family. Angela aspires to return to the West to raise a
family and establish herself as a bench-to-bedside scientist
in the exciting field of reproductive science and medicine.
Jasrajbir has applied to several medical schools. His
long-term goal in medicine is to become a surgeon but at
this time he is unsure of his field of specialty.

the University Act on April 3, 1907, only 18
months after Saskatchewan became a province.
The people of the province, as well as their government,
were instrumental in shaping the new University. The
provincial government requested all residents who were
graduates of a Canadian or British university to form the
first Convocation and elect the University’s Senate. The
Senate, in turn, elected five members to the first Board
of Governors, while the province appointed three. In
1908, the Board selected Professor Walter Charles
Murray, of Dalhousie University, as the first President.
The University of Saskatchewan overlooks the South
Saskatchewan River from a 755 hectare site. The
campus itself is 147 hectares; a research park, the
University farm and experimental plots make up the
remainder.
Classes in Arts and Science began in September, 1909,
in downtown Saskatoon. Construction of the campus
began in 1910 and the first buildings were occupied in
the fall of 1912. They included the College Building
(Administration Building), Saskatchewan Hall
(a student residence), residences for the Dean of
Agriculture and the President, a laboratory for
Engineering and a number of farm buildings.
Most early buildings on campus are Collegiate Gothic in
style and are constructed in a local dolomite, popularly
known as greystone. Subsequently constructed buildings
also have greystone, as well as Tyndall stone (pre-cut
slabs quarried in Tyndall, Manitoba), concrete, brick,
glass and aggregate facings.
The University offers many points of interest for
visitors: the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, Museum of
Natural Sciences, Museum of Antiquities, Biology
Museum, Pharmaceutical Museum, the Observatory, the
Gordon Snelgrove Gallery, the St. Thomas More
Gallery, Rugby Chapel, the Little Stone Schoolhouse,
the Memorial Gates, Patterson Garden and the
Kenderdine Gallery.
From the beginning, the University established an
emphasis on research and teaching in a context of
community service, and encouraged co-operation among
departments and divisions in tackling common
problems. The development of rust-resistant strains of
wheat, for example, initiated by the University and
federal and provincial research agencies, has been of
untold value to the prairie economy.
You are invited to visit our campus at any time!
