“Come to Me...”
Dear Friends,
seriously threatened. For years they have been objecting to the injustices
they see in our nation. I share with you some excerpts from the Bishops’
most recent letter on Religious Freedom, as they encourage all people
of good faith to reflect on what’s happening in our country and in our
world.
“Come to me…” I get choked up when I read
that line from Saint Matthew’s Gospel. To me, those
three words pack a powerful punch. They carry a
strong invitation and reminder. Jesus wants us to
come to him. He wants us to know that when we
are burdened – with whatever burdens us – he is
here for us. We just need to remember his presence
in our lives and turn to him in our need. Too often we seek solace and
comfort in the wrong places. Jesus tells us to seek comfort and solace
in Him. When we do, we will not be disappointed.
We are Catholics. We are Americans. We are proud to be both, grateful for
the gift of faith which is ours as Christian disciples, and grateful for the gift of
liberty which is ours as American citizens. To be Catholic and American should
mean not having to choose one over the other. Our allegiances are distinct, but
they need not be contradictory, and should instead be complementary. That is
the teaching of our Catholic faith, which obliges us to work together with fellow
citizens for the common good of all who live in this land. That is the vision of our
founding and our Constitution, which guarantees citizens of all religious faiths
the right to contribute to our common life together
You may or may not know that the passage we hear from Saint
Matthew today is the same one that is prescribed for the liturgy of the
anointing of the sick. I celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick often, with
people who are terminally ill, preparing for surgery, chronically ill and
severely injured. I have anointed some of you. As we prepare to anoint
the ill or disabled person we hear Jesus’ words. I remind the person that
the promise of the Lord is for real. He will give the sick person rest,
healing, solace, hope… In a word Jesus promises us that he will give us
what we need. I sometimes suggest to the one being anointed, and to
the ones caring for the ill person that they repeat the words of Jesus, in
a type of mantra prayer, whenever their situation causes them anxiety.
“Come to me… Come to me… Come to me…” It allows us to pray
using the Lord’s own words of invitation, and encourages us to place
our trust in Jesus.
Religious liberty is not only about our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or
pray the Rosary at home. It is about whether we can make our contribution to the
common good of all Americans. Can we do the good works our faith calls us to
do, without having to compromise that very same faith? Without religious liberty
properly understood, all Americans suffer, deprived of the essential contribution
in education, health care, feeding the hungry, civil rights, and social services that
religious Americans make every day, both here at home and overseas.
What is at stake is whether America will continue to have a free, creative,
and robust civil society — or whether the state alone will determine who gets to
contribute to the common good, and how they get to do it. Religious believers
are part of American civil society, which includes neighbors helping each other,
community associations, fraternal service clubs, sports leagues, and youth groups.
All these Americans make their contribution to our common life, and they do not
need the permission of the government to do so. Restrictions on religious liberty
are an attack on civil society and the American genius for voluntary associations.
I offer that suggestion not only to those who are ill and their
caregivers. I use that prayer often in my own personal prayer. I invite
you to try it yourself. It will bring comfort and consolation to a stressful
day and will encourage you to remember the power of Christ in your
life. In God’s great providence, he gave us Jesus who lived as one of us,
with the pains and stressors of worldly life, who knew suffering and
disappointment, and who offers us rest and consolation. We cannot live
solitary super-independent lives. When we rely on the power of Christ
in our lives we will not be disappointed. He gives us what we need.
Think about it! And hear Jesus’ words: “Come to me!”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION
The fourth and final year of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan
will focus on fostering reflection by Catholics on the purpose
and meaning of all of the sacraments, with particular attention
to Eucharist and Reconciliation. This year may include but is
by no means limited to some of the following elements:
Registration forms and tuition information for our Religious Education
program are available in both the rectory office and on our website at
www.stjohnberchmans.org. Classes take place on Saturday mornings from
9am-10:30am and will begin on Saturday, September 13th. If you have any
questions about the SJB Religious Education Program please contact the
rectory office.
MINISTERS OF CARE
Do you know someone who is sick or homebound? We have ministers who
can help. Our Ministers of Care have been trained to visit with, pray with,
and give Communion to those who are sick or cannot make it to Mass on
their own. Please contact the rectory office for more information or to set
up a visit with one of our ministers.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME CATHOLIC?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a journey for adults who
would like to be baptized, receive first Holy Communion and be confirmed.
The RCIA process can also help you complete the necessary steps to become
a member of the Catholic Church if you were baptized in another Christian
denomination.
The SJB RCIA program meets from mid-October through April, and the
sacraments are received at the Easter Vigil. The process of RCIA is a journey
of faith, led by the Holy Spirit. It is a time to tell stories, ask questions, meet
new friends and explore prayer and scripture.
If you are interested in finding out more about the RCIA, if you know of
anyone who might be a candidate for this journey, or if you are willing to
help as a catechist or sponsor, please contact Rita Kattner in the rectory
office.

ONE WORD AT A TIME...

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD VOLUNTEERS
As we begin a year of reflection on the sacraments, we first
need to be clear about what we mean. What exactly are the
sacraments? How do we understand them? How can we
explain them to others?
We are currently looking for volunteers to help with Children’s Liturgy
of the Word. Children’s Liturgy of the Word occurs on the first Sunday of
each month during the 9:45am Mass. If you are interested in helping, please
contact the rectory office.
Sacraments are signs, seven different religious rituals which
Jesus has given to his Church. Unlike other signs that just
point something out, these sacramental signs bring us in direct
contact with Jesus Christ who saves us. Here is another way to
express the reality of the sacraments.They hold the mystery of
Jesus Christ.The sacraments both contain and bring us close to
Jesus Christ, true God and true man, the one who saves us from
sin and death, the redeemer who gives us eternal life.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation
Throughout the year, the Sacrament of Reconciliation
(Confession) is available each Saturday from 4-4:45pm. Due
to some scheduling conflicts during the summer months,
there will be no priest available for the regularly scheduled
confessions on the following dates:
July 12, July 19, August 2 and August 9
Pope Francis never tires of telling us how God has come
close and touched us in Jesus Christ. The sacraments bring us
directly into that experience.We are amazed and grateful.
Confessions are always available by appointment. Please contact

“Vengan a Mí...”
Queridos Amigos,
Católicos continúa luchando por la libertad religiosa, la cual está siendo
seriamente amenazada según los Obispos. Durante años se han estado
oponiendo a las injusticias que ven en nuestra nación. Quiero compartir
con usted algunos extractos de la carta más reciente de los Obispos sobre
la libertad religiosa, ya que animan a todas las personas de buena fe que
reflexionen sobre lo que está pasando en nuestro país y en nuestro mundo.
“Vengan a mí...” Me emociono cuando leo esta frase
del Evangelio de San Mateo. Esas tres palabras contienen
un gran significado para mí. Transmiten una invitación y
recordatorio fuertes. Jesús quiere que nos acerquemos a
él. Quiere que sepamos que cuando estamos agobiados
– sea cual sea nuestro pena – Él está aquí para nosotros.
Sólo tenemos que recordar su presencia en nuestras
vidas y retornar a Él en nuestra necesidad. Muy a menudo buscamos alivio y
consuelo en los lugares equivocados. Jesús nos dice que busquemos consuelo
y alivio en Él. Cuando lo hacemos, no nos decepciona.
Somos católicos. Somos americanos. Estamos orgullosos de ser a la vez, agradecidos
por el don de la fe que es nuestra como discípulos cristianos, y agradecidos por el don de
la libertad que es nuestra como ciudadanos estadounidenses. Ser católico y americano
deben significar no tener que elegir uno sobre el otro. Nuestras lealtades son distintas,
pero no tienen por qué ser contradictorias, y en su lugar deben ser complementarias. Esa
es la enseñanza de la fe católica, que nos obliga a trabajar juntos con otros ciudadanos
para el bien común de todos los que viven en esta tierra. Esa es la visión de nuestro
fundador y de nuestra Constitución, que garantiza a los ciudadanos de todas las
creencias religiosas el derecho a contribuir a nuestra vida en común.
Quizás usted pueda o no saber que el pasaje que hoy escuchamos de
San Mateo es el mismo que se prescribe para la liturgia de la unción de los
enfermos. A menudo celebro el Sacramento de los Enfermos, con personas
que tienen una enfermedad terminal, preparándose para una cirugía,
enfermos crónicos y gravemente heridos. Yo he ungido a algunos de ustedes.
Mientras que nos preparamos para ungir a la persona enferma o discapacitada
escuchamos las palabras de Jesús. Le recuerdo a la persona que la promesa
del Señor es verdadera. Él le dará a la persona enferma descanso, sanación,
consuelo, esperanza... En una palabra, Jesús nos promete que Él nos dará lo
que necesitamos. A veces sugiero al que va a ser ungido, y a los que cuidan
a la persona enferma que repitan las palabras de Jesús, en un tipo de oración
mantra, cuando sientan que su situación les cause ansiedad. “Vengan a mí...
Vengan a mí... Vengan a mí...” Nos permite orar usando las propias palabras
de la invitación del Señor, y nos anima a que pongamos nuestra confianza en
Jesús.
La libertad religiosa no es sólo acerca de nuestra capacidad de ir a misa los
domingos o rezar el rosario en casa. Se trata de si podemos hacer nuestra contribución al
bien común de todos los estadounidenses. ¿Podemos hacer las buenas obras que nuestra
fe nos llama a hacer, sin tener que comprometer esa misma fe? Sin libertad religiosa
bien entendida, los estadounidenses sufren, privados de la contribución esencial de
la educación, la salud, la alimentación de los hambrientos, los derechos civiles, y los
servicios sociales que los estadounidenses religiosos hacen todos los días, tanto aquí como
en casa y en el extranjero.
Lo que está en juego es si Estados Unidos seguirá teniendo una sociedad — o civil
libre, creativa y sólida si el estado por sí solo va a determinar quién va a contribuir al bien
común, y cómo llegan a hacerlo. Los creyentes religiosos son parte de la sociedad civil de
América, que incluye los vecinos se ayudan entre sí, asociaciones comunitarias, clubes de
servicio fraterno, ligas deportivas, y grupos de jóvenes. Todos estos americanos hacen su
contribución a nuestra vida en común, y que no necesitan el permiso del gobierno para
hacerlo. Las restricciones a la libertad religiosa son un ataque a la sociedad civil y el
genio americano de asociaciones voluntarias.
Ofrezco esa sugerencia no sólo a los que están enfermos sino aquellos
que colaboran con su cuidado. Uso la oración a menudo en mi propio rezo
personal. Le invito a que lo intente usted mismo. Le traerá alivio y consuelo a
un día agotador y le animará a que recuerde el poder de Cristo en su vida. En la
gran providencia de Dios, el nos dio a Jesús quien vivió como uno de nosotros,
con los dolores y los factores de estrés de la vida mundana, quien conoció el
sufrimiento y la decepción, y quien nos ofrece el descanso y consuelo. No
podemos vivir vidas solitarias súper independientes. Cuando confiamos en el
poder de Cristo en nuestras vidas no estaremos decepcionados. Él nos da lo
que necesitamos.
¡Piense en eso! Y escuche las palabras de Jesús: “¡Vengan a mí!”

VOLUNTARIOS PARA LA LITURGIA DE LA PALABRA PARA
LOS NIÑOS
Al comenzar un año de reflexión acerca de los sacramentos,
primero necesitamos dejar en claro lo que queremos decir.
¿Qué son exactamente los sacramentos? ¿Cómo los entendemos?
¿Cómo podemos explicárselos a los demás?
Actualmente estamos buscando voluntarios para ayudar con la Liturgia de la
Palabra para los Niños. La Liturgia de la Palabra para los Niños ocurre el primer
domingo de cada mes durante la Misa de 9:45am. Si usted está interesado en
ayudar, por favor póngase en contacto con la oficina de la rectoría.
Los sacramentos son signos, siete rituales religiosos diferentes
que Jesús le ha otorgado a su Iglesia. A diferencia de otros signos
que solo hacen referencia a una cosa, estos signos sacramentales
nos ponen en contacto directo con Jesucristo, nuestro Salvador.
Podemos expresar la realidad de los sacramentos en otras
palabras: contienen el misterio de Jesucristo. Los sacramentos
contienen a Jesucristo y nos acercan a él, que es verdadero Dios
y verdadero hombre, que nos salva del pecado y de la muerte, el
redentor que nos da la vida eterna.
El Sacramento de Reconciliación
Durante el año, el Sacramento de Reconciliación (Confesión) está
disponible cada sábado de 4-4:45 pm. Debido a algunos conflictos
de agenda durante los meses de verano, no habrá ningún sacerdote
disponible para las confesiones regulares en las siguientes fechas:
12 de julio, 19 de julio, 2 de agosto y 9 de agosto
El Papa Francisco nunca se cansa de recordarnos la manera en
que Dios se ha acercado y nos ha tocado a través de Jesucristo.
Los sacramentos nos llevan directamente a esa experiencia. Esto
nos asombra y nos llena de gratitud.
Las confesiones están siempre disponibles con cita previa. Por
