MENSAJE DEL PRESIDENTE - 04/2016
¡Saludos! Soy Jorge Santiago, el nuevo presidente del Puerto Rico RID. Quizás no han visto
movimiento por parte de la nueva Junta, pero hemos estado trabajando. Primero, como
pueden ver tenemos nuestra página de Facebook y también tenemos una página web, les
agradecemos su paciencia, ya casi la terminamos.
Desde aquella reunión que hubo en febrero donde se estableció la nueva Junta, descubrimos
que la organización PRRID ya no estaba incorporada; el gobierno la disolvió. Al saber esto, la
Junta decidió reincorporarse bajo un nuevo nombre; la organización se llama Registro de
Intérpretes para Sordos de Puerto Rico, Inc. (RISPRI) La Junta se reunió para revisar el
reglamento, actualizarlo y remover mucha de la información escrita que no era necesaria.
Al tener una nueva organización, con nuevo reglamento, establecimos nuevas metas. La
primera, proveer oportunidades para el desarrollo profesional. La segunda, proveer
oportunidades de mentoría. La tercera, el Registro de Intérpretes para Sordos de Puerto Rico
debe ser como una familia donde podamos compartir y conocernos. ¿Quién sabe si esa
persona que conozcas en un futuro pueda trabajar contigo? La cuarta, nosotros
investigaremos la posibilidad de que el RISPRI desarrolle una certificación con el permiso de
la junta nacional.
Con estas metas podemos empezar el plan de trabajo. Hemos considerado cuatro comités. El
primero es el Comité de Traducción, ese comité es importante porque, tanto la Junta como los
miembros, somos muy diversos. Algunos miembros se comunican en lenguaje de señas,
algunos solo hablan inglés y otros solo hablan español. Ese comité nos ayuda a traducir
cualquier información o recurso para el entendimiento y el aprovechamiento de todos. Otro
comité que consideramos es el Comité de Convención, nuestra tradición es tener una
convención cada dos años, pero la organización debe tener una asamblea anual. Ese comité
nos ayudará a planificarlo. El tercer comité es para mentoría; ese comité nos debe ayudar a
establecer un programa de mentoría para el beneficio de todos. El cuarto comité es para
fomentar el desarrollo profesional, el cual será un centro de recursos e información para la
necesidad de todos los miembros en temas especializados como legales, médicos o trilingües.
Necesitamos de su ayuda y su disposición para trabajar con nosotros. Si interesa trabajar en
algún comité comuníquese con nosotros. El Comité de Traducción ya tiene una presidenta; se
llama Roslyn Famous y si interesa participar en él, comuníquese con ella a su dirección de

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - 04/2016
Greetings! I’m Jorge Santiago, the newly elected president of the Puerto Rico RID. You may not have seen
any activity by the new Board, but we have been actively working. First, as you can see, we have
established a Facebook page and a website. We appreciate your patience; the website is almost
completed.
After the February meeting, when the new Board was elected, we discovered that the Puerto Rico Registry
of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc (PRRID) was no longer incorporated. The government dissolved the
organization. When we discovered this, the Board decided to reincorporate the organization using a new
name. The organization is now officially named the Registro de Intérpretes para Sordos de Puerto Rico,
Inc. (RISPRI). The Board took the opportunity of reincorporating the organization to review the Bylaws. We
made several updates to the Bylaws and streamlined them in the process.
With a new name and new Bylaws, we also took this opportunity to establish new goals. First: provide
opportunities for professional development. Second: provide mentoring opportunities. Third: create a sense
a family within the RISPRI membership, spend time together, and get to know each other. Who knows,
someone you meet through the organization could be your colleague in the future. Fourth: Petition our
parent organization, the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc, requesting permission to investigate the
possibility of RISPRI developing an evaluation or certification of our own at some point in the future.
With these goals in mind, we have developed a plan of action. We have given thought to the establishment
of four committees. The first is the Translation Committee. This committee is important because the Board
and our membership, in general, are very diverse. Some members communicate solely in sign language;
some only speak English; while others only speak Spanish. This committee will help us translate any
information or resource for the understanding and benefit of all members. Another committee that we have
given thought to is the Conference Committee. It has been our tradition to hold a biennial conference;
however, our organization must hold an annual business meeting as well. The Conference Committee will
help us with the planning of both of these events. The third committee is Mentoring. This committee will be
charged with helping us establish a mentoring program that benefits everyone. The fourth committee is
Professional Development, which will serve as a center for resources and information that meet the needs
of all members, including information and resources on specializations such as legal, medical, or trilingual
interpreting.
We need your help and a willingness to work with us. If you wish to join a committee, contact us. The
Translation Committee already has an appointed Chairperson. Her name is Roslyn Famous. If you wish to
