exciting daily updates at www.biff1.com
Thanks to you, Boulder’s huge audiences that come to the festival by the tens of thousands
every year, BIFF is celebrating our 11th festival, and we believe we have finally grown up,
both culturally and artistically. Except for our love of Evel Knievel and National Lampoon,
maybe, or the dozens of people dressed like movie characters running around the streets
on Opening Night, or the super-high-powered racecar projector, projecting a giant creature
swimming across the tops of Boulder’s buildings, all to highlight our closing night film,
Racing Extinction.
We are excited to show you The Wrecking Crew for opening night! They were the most
famous studio band in history, known for songs such as “ Be My Baby,” “California
Girls,” “Strangers in the Night,” “Mrs. Robinson,” “Monday, Monday” and “Up, Up and
Away.” This long-awaited film, made over 18 years, includes over 100 songs, along with
artists and back stories, but it was tied up over music rights until just recently.
This year, we’re so happy to bring in one of the A-list lions of film, the Oscar, Tony, Golden
Globe and Obie winning, and multiple Oscar, Golden Globe, Obie and Emmy nominated
Alan Arkin, who will spend an evening on the stage with celebrated show-business interviewer, Ron Bostwick.
On Friday night, BIFF presents CineCHEF, an all-new culinary competition that will pit
Boulder’s most famous chefs in a cooking punch up. These are the renowned culinary wizards who helped get Boulder its “Foodiest Town” title from Bon Appétit magazine. Chefs will
choose a movie theme and serve small plates based on that theme, and attendees will vote
on their favorite.
The Closing Night film is Racing Extinction, the exciting film that follows covert activists who
risk everything by stalking lawbreakers that include shark-fin hunters, illegal wild animal
traders, factory feedlots that spew illegal methane by the ton, and restaurants that serve
endangered species as highly expensive delicacies.
BIFF’s Global Town Hall brings together festivalgoers and experts from around the world for
a live video hookup and discussion. This year, inspired by Racing Extinction, the topic is
Lights, Camera, Climate, Action. We will ask the question, “Does film move people to take
action or cause people to turn away and retreat?”
BIFF 2015 is dedicated to the memory of Bill Vielehr, our board president since the beginning, an icon in the Boulder arts community, a nationally-known sculptor who hand-built our
awards every year, and one of the most creative and generous people we’ve ever known.
We will honor Bill on Closing Night.

The Global Town Hall will combine food, art, engagement, expression
and action, reaching out from Boulder to beyond with the support
of Google technology!
Another day, another dire climate prediction. Are we learning more
yet doing less? Do documentaries inspire us to act, or paralyze us
with resignation, fear, and complacency? Is greater climate awareness without tangible action meaningless? And if documentaries don’t
change behavior, then what’s the point of making them?
Join a circle of esteemed filmmakers, climate experts and others
as we explore these and other questions. It’s also a chance to offer
your advice to filmmakers seeking to provoke and engage through
their work.
Come discuss like the planet is depending on us!

MAGNOLIA PICTURES PRESENTS
The Wrecking Crew
USA, Feature Documentary, 2015, 101 min
What the Funk Brothers did for Motown, The Wrecking Crew did for the west coast sound.
For six years in a row, the Grammy for Record of the
Year went to Wrecking Crew recordings. The most
famous studio band in the history of music backed up
everyone from Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra to
The Monkees, The Byrds and The Beach Boys, making
their “west coast sound” a dominant cultural force in
the world of music. This film, made by Denny Tedesco
for his father, the legendary member of The Wrecking Crew Tommy Tedesco, has more than 100 of their
songs, along with the back stories, all presented by the
people who made them for you. Songs include:
Be My Baby, California Girls, Strangers in the Night,
Mrs. Robinson, You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’, Monday
Monday, Up, Up and Away, Viva Las Vegas, Mr.
Tambourine Man and many others. This long-awaited
film, 18 years in development, is an upbeat tribute
to the secret star-making machine known only as The
Wrecking Crew.
FOOTNOTE: One of the largest Kickstarter campaigns in history
helped to finally advance the commercial release of this film,
which had been delayed for years because of music rights.

“An intimate and vivid
documentary.”
hollywood reporter
Time has stood still here in the
green hills and tidy villages of
Romania, and the sturdy, overage-75 residents are surprisingly
honest in talking to director Anges
Sós about their past, and often
hilarious, physical experiences.
Among the women there’s talk of
wedding nights, not-so-romantic
husbands, duty sex, affairs and a
belated discovery of ecstasy. Their
use of colloquial, non-medical
words for intimate body parts is
delightfully funny as they trade
earthy stories while making
stuffed cabbage for the village
picnic. Everything you ever wanted
to know about sex in the Old
Country. subtitled

A Borrowed Identity
based on the novel Dancing Arabs
World Premiere at the 31st Annual Jerusalem
Film Festival
“Anyone who sees the film—Jew, Arab
or someone from outside Israel completely—will be able to understand
far more about the reality here than
they could learn from any article or
editorial.” jerusalem post
Eyad, a brilliant Palestinian teen, is hassled
constantly by Israeli soldiers in his village in the
‘80s, but he escapes by getting a scholarship to
the most prestigious boarding school in Jerusalem. The only Arab, he is teased about his accent
and clothes, but his prodigious classroom skills
earn respect. And while tutoring hard-partying
wheelchair-bound Jonathon, Eyad finally learns
how to tease back. Working at his part-time
job dishwashing in a restaurant, he decides he
would make a great waiter because he could just
memorize every order. “Arabs in the kitchen,” he is
told, “Jews in the front.” He’s now afraid that, no
matter what his skills, he will always belong to the
lowest caste of society. So he decides to pass for
Jewish. (“Dancing Arabs” is a semi-autobiographical novel, and the real “Eyad” is now one of the
Middle East’s most popular authors.) subtitled

Syria is called the land of dead filmmakers—anyone with a camera is shot. The
gruesome Syrian Civil War has barely registered on the consciousness of the world.
But now an astonishing film pulls back the
curtain on the unbelievable atrocities inflicted every day in this tortured land. Syrian film director Ossama Mohammed, in
exile in Paris, was contacted on Facebook
by a young Kurdish woman, Wiam Simav
Bedirxan, a filmmaker in Homs, who was
trapped under heavy shelling. Collaborating with her for two years, Mohammed
distilled stories from the footage that the
courageous Simav herself was shooting
in Homs, along with a thousand videos
posted by Syrians online. The result is this
horrific yet poetic documentary masterpiece. subtitled

DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD:
The Story of the National Lampoon
USA, Feature Documentary, 2015, 93 min
Direct to BIFF from Sundance 2015
"It will remind you how much we owe to a few
irreverent misfits at Harvard." hollywood reporter
They became icons of modern comedy ... the legions of writers and performers who spun out of the National Lampoon empire to “Saturday Night Live,”
“The Simpsons,” major movie careers and TV dynasties. It all sprouted from
a college humor magazine and warped staffers, Douglas Kenney and Henry
Beard, who made it explode into America's culture with its middle finger
jammed up the establishment. How do you sell advertising to corporate suits
for a vulgar magazine that prints art like the "Baby Blender?" Then came
Animal House. It's all here, from Kenney's depression over the awful movie
they had just finished called Caddyshack, to the huge buyout that made them
rich. Director Douglas Tirola unearths never-before-seen archival footage and
brilliantly weaves it together with the magazine's beautiful and often shocking art, reliving National Lampoon's meteoric rise from go-to magazine of the
counterculture to a brand synonymous with Hollywood's biggest comedies.
Energetic, revolutionary, gently perverted and often hilarious. Directed by Douglas Tirola

Barry Crimmins is still pissed. His hellfire brand
of comedy has rained lightning bolts on American
audiences and politicians for decades. Alternately
self-effacing and scathing, his ribald comedy took
audiences by force into his never-ending war on
ignorance, and he has had a role in discovering and
supporting the development of many of today’s comedians. After a highly successful career, Crimmins
retired and went back to his own dark and painful
past, one that inspired his intense campaign of
activism to help save others from child abuse. But,
this time around, he is REALLY pissed.

Valley Uprising
Winner of many film festivals around the world
Over the last five decades, the grand granite walls of Half Dome and
El Capitan in Yosemite National Park have seen the rise of a unique
culture of rock monkeys and cragsmen on their flanks: free-spirited
dirt bags and stoners with a lifestyle of dumpster-diving performing
unfathomable feats of bravery. This fast-paced film, through dizzying
high-camera work, pounding music and a brilliant narrative, covers
the last half century of struggle against the laws of gravity—and the
laws of the USA. Yosemite’s history will become your history, and you
will never forget the absolute joy in this film.

The Hand That Feeds
At a popular bakery café, residents of New York’s
Upper East Side get bagels and coffee served with
a smile 24 hours a day. But behind the scenes,
undocumented immigrant workers face sub-legal
wages, dangerous machinery and abusive managers. Risking deportation and violence, the workers,
led by sandwich maker Mahoma López, form their
own legal, independent union. In one roller-coaster
year, they must endure a two-month lockout, a
takeover of the restaurant by Occupy Wall Street
protesters and a picket line that will divide the
neighborhood. If they can win a contract, it will set
a historic precedent for low-wage workers across
the country. Directed by Robin Blotnick and

This is a deeply moving film about celebrated
painter Jon Imber’s darkly humorous response
to a diagnosis of ALS. The film traces Imber’s
adaptations, switching from his right to his left
hand, and then to both hands as the condition
worsens. He produces more than 100 paintings
in the next three months. Imber knows his
legacy will live on through his family, his art
and among the students he taught over 27
years at Harvard. In one scene, though, he
regrets to his wife, the painter Jill Hoy, that his
religion, Judaism, had little to do with his life
and work. “But it’s the very root of what you
are,” she replies. Imber now has a consolation: His newest abstract landscapes are
stronger than anything he has ever painted in
his life. And he knows it. (Jon Imber attended
CU-Boulder.)

We’re all descendants of survivors, and the most important traits for human survivability in the past were those flashes of creativity that solved major problems. We all
inherited the creativity of our successful ancestors. So what is it, and how can we
develop our own? This funny, fascinating film explores the very essence of innovation, art and discovery through the words of prolific and successful creatives. Their
process, their thrills, their angst, their stories of suffering, laughter, success and

Austin to Boston USA/Australia, Feature Documentary, 2014, 72 min Also screening at eTown Hall, see page 39
Five old VW vans. Four bands. Three thousand miles. Two weeks. One gloriously
retro cross-country band tour. The adventure begins at Austin’s SXSW Music
Festival where the bands (Ben Howard, The Staves, Nathaniel Rateliff, Bear’s Den)
pile into their rides and head northeast. Sounding like the track of a Coen brothers’ movie, they play small-town venues from bars to barns, wowing crowds all the
way to Boston. This raggedy tour is a far cry from the heavy, high-tech logistics
of these bands’ normal tours, and their biggest tech problems are a stalling
Microbus and how to relight a campfire after a rainstorm. Featuring Mumford &
Sons’ Ben Lovett and narrated by Gill Landry of the Old Crow Medicine Show, this
documentary is about the absolutely boundless joy of getting back to your roots.

Leith, North Dakota, is a registered ghost town of
24 people. The town has a stark beauty with a
prairie backdrop of wide-open sky and fields
of wheat. In 2012, an outsider named Craig
Cobb moved in and started buying up property.
He accumulated 12 plots of land, some empty,
some with houses in various states of disrepair.
Turns out Cobb is also a notorious white
supremacist who was plotting a takeover of the
town government. As his behavior becomes more
threatening, tensions soar and the residents
desperately look for ways to expel their unwanted
neighbor ... without violating his constitutional
rights.

Fifty percent of all human illness is the result of waterborne pathogens. Dean Kamen, holder of 440 patents and
the inventor of the Segway, has developed an energyefficient vapor compression distiller that can turn any
unfit source of water (seawater, poisoned well water, river
sludge, etc.) into potable, safe water without any need
for chemical additives or filters. A quirky genius with a
sharp wit and a progressive worldview, Kamen is our era’s
Thomas Edison. He has invented the first drug-infusion
pump and the first portable dialysis machine, reconceived
kidney dialysis, engineered a radical new electric wheelchair (the Ibot) and reworked the heart stent. Can the
SlingShot device take down the goliath of bad water?
This is a compelling portrait of a great modern-day hero.
In 1979, Holocaust survivor and Montevideo resident Jacob Kaplan is
76 years old. He’s been married for 50 years to Rebecca, and has two
wonderful grown sons and a sweet teenage granddaughter. However, the
retired Jacob still feels like he’s barely achieved anything with his life
compared to, say, Goethe or Winston Churchill. Then one day he comes
across two random pieces of information; putting them together, he comes
to the startling realization that the elderly German who runs a beachfront
cafe near his house is, in fact, a famous Nazi war criminal. Teaming up
with his chauffeur, Wilson, a bumbling alcoholic former police officer, they
do an exhaustive (and often comical) investigation into the past and come

Jeff Lowe’s Metanoia
USA, Feature Documentary, 2014, 84 min
Narrated by Jon Krakauer
One of the greatest world-class athletes of all time, Jeff Lowe has
made climbing what it is today. He contributed to the development
of the modern ice screw and cam, invented the grading system used
worldwide for mixed climbs, authored now classic books on climbing
technique, brought the first Sport Climbing Championships to America
and opened the ice park in Ouray, Colorado. In this film, Jeff tells the
extraordinary story of his historic nine-day mid-winter solo ascent of
the north face of the Eiger in 1991—a route he named “Metanoia”—
which has never been climbed since. Jeff’s “unimaginable” new route
up the Eiger prepared him for the greatest adventure he’s ever been
on, the climb of his life as he slowly loses all of his physical abilities
and faces his own mortality. Interleaved with the story of Jeff’s life
is spectacular footage of climber Ueli Steck’s attempt—during the
making of the film—to duplicate Jeff’s historic Eiger climb.

In the history of sports, few names are more recognizable than that
of Evel Knievel. Long after the man hung up his famous white leather
jumpsuit, his name is still synonymous with the death-defying
lifestyle he led. Knievel stared death in the face from the seat of his
motorcycle, but few know the larger-than-life story of the boy from
Butte, Montana. Robert Craig Knievel was, to millions, a real-life
superhero who, time after time, put his own body on the line and then
just freakin’ went for it. For decades, half the little boys in America
had beloved toys from the Knievel merchandise empire. Knievel
wasn’t perfect, but as good as you could expect from a man whose

This tense, heart-stopping documentary tells the
story of five ordinary suburban Americans who,
one night in 1971 (March 8, 44 years ago today),
dropped their kids off at babysitters, broke into
an FBI office and carted off thousands of paper
files showing the FBI’s vast network of illegal
surveillance of American citizens. Like low-tech
Edward Snowdens, they shared fuzzy photocopies
of these files with the press, which led to the
first public Congressional investigation of a U.S.
intelligence agency. A humiliated J. Edgar Hoover
assigned hundreds of FBI agents to find this
traitorous group, and one scary night dozens of FBI
agents scoured the very suburban neighborhood
in which these perpetrators lived. Surprisingly,
they were never caught. But here they are in this

and manipulative nature, it becomes increasingly unclear who will ultimately dominate,
patient or doctor. Directed by Charles Binamé

extinction
Scientists predict we may lose half the
species on the planet by 2100, and that we
have entered the sixth major extinction event
in Earth’s history. Number five took out the
dinosaurs, but this time we are the asteroid.
We’re the last generation remaining that
can stop our callous worldwide destruction
of irreplaceable life. This exciting and
highly anticipated film follows activists
with covert cameras, who risk everything
by stalking shark-fin hunters, illegal wild
animal traders, factory feedlots that spew
illegal methane by the ton and restaurants
that serve endangered species as highly
expensive delicacies. These superhero
activists also reveal the vast, undetected,
ocean-killing phenomenon that the oil and
gas companies don’t want us to see.

Psihoyos’ latest is a wake-up call to the threat
of mass extinction on our planet.
After the film, downtown Boulder will come to

Special thanks to The Twisted Foundation and
Joellen Raderstorf for bringing the racecar to BIFF.

WHAT’S YOUR
WILD STORY?
We love great stories and are wild about film makers who know how to
tell them. It’s the reason we support independent film and BIFF. But if
you’re not a skilled film maker, how can you tell your story?
We’re WILDSTORY Media, based in Boulder, and we help businesses
and individuals tell stories through public relations. We know how to tell
your story in a way that gets attention.
So, what’s your story? We can help shape it and share it with the wider
audience it deserves. There’s a story to every business. Together we
can make it WILD.
