Archaeologic Sites
During Hot Weather To protect your health when temperatures are extremely high, remember to keep cool and use common sense. The following tips are
important: limit your outdoor activity to early morning, putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, during exercise in a hot environment, and drink two to four
glasses (16-32 ounces) of cool fluids each hour.
Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is the most famous Mayan temple city and one of the most well
liked attractions our guests visit. It served as the political and economic
center of the Mayan civilization. The Kukulkan Pyramid (El Castillo) itself was
the last, and arguably the greatest, of all Mayan temples. During the spring
and fall equinox (March and September the corner of the Temple of
Kukulkan casts a shadow in the shape of a giant ‚feathered serpent‚ that
appears to slither its way down the side of the North staircase with the sun's
movement. The Maya believed that on the Equinoxes their god, Kukulkan,
came down from the heavens to speak directly to their priests. This natural
phenomenon of light and shadow is a unique experience that attracts
visitors from all parts of the world. Unquestionably, the ancient Maya
created a wonder of the world in the great Pyramid of Kukulkan. In 2007,
Chichen Itza's KuKulkan Pyramid was named one of the New Seven
Wonders of the World after a worldwide vote.
Tulum
Tulum's greatest attraction is its location. It stands on a bluff facing the
rising sun and looks out on views of the Caribbean that are nothing less
than spectacular. Tulum is Mayan for "Wall“ and received the name
because it was one of the few walled Mayan cities ever constructed.
Research suggests it was formerly called Zama or "to dawn" in its day,
but was later renamed to “Tulum“ by explorers Stephens and
Catherwood in 1841, just before the beginning of the Caste War in 1847
and long after the city was abandon and fell to ruins. They ordered
trees cleared and Catherwood made illustrations of the temples which
later appeared in their famous book "Incidents of Travel in Yucatan".
Juan José Gálvez, however, is historically credited with Tulum's
rediscovery in 1840.
Coba
Coba is one of the most important archaeological sites in the area. It
was built between two lakes during the Classic Period (600-900 A.D.)
and was at one time a large metropolitan city which spread over 80
square kilometers. The Mayan pyramid Nohoch Mul, meaning 'large
hill', is 42 meters tall (138 feet) and is the highest known monument
in the Yucatan peninsula (photo below). The second tallest pyramid is
known as Templo de la Iglesia, 'Temple of the Church', which can also
be found in Cobá. We also recommend hiking up its summit for a
spectacular view of lake Macanxoc and to seeall of this great Mayan
city.
Eco Adventure Parks
Aktunchen
Aktun Chen Dry Cave and Jungle Tour is the best way to tour and see
this maginificent cave system, which is just south of Akumal along the
highway. A walk through Aktun Chen is as close to "dry cave diving"
as you'll get. Aktun Chen is great example of the extensive caves in
the area and after learning about the construction of cenotes and
seeing the variety and number of stalactites you will leave the cave
much more knowledgable about this beautiful natural process. It
also has great monkeys too!
Cenotes
Cenotes are one of the most unique features of the Yucatan's
geology. The cenotes are literally the liquid life of Quintana Roo.
They are natural oasis pools in the jungle, fed freshwater by the
submerged caves, or underground riviers, which honeycomb the
underground. Many of these cenotes can be visited on organized
snorkel-swim tours or scuba diving while others with signs along the
road simply require a small fee to enter.
Jardin del Eden
Located just South of Cenote Azul, El Jardin del Eden has been named
Ponderosa by local cave divers and is a fun spot to check out. It’s a main
entrance point into the underground cave system so you will see many
divers as well as diving instruction happening here. In addition to the
beautiful waters, there is a high cliff jump available to guests and if
you’re feeling really brave you can even climb a tree for extra height.
They don’t allow coolers, but we always bring one in our van, and when
guests get hungry or thirsty they can take a break from swimming to
enjoy refreshments or a snack at the picnic table by the car.
Selvatica
Selvatica Aventure jungle tour is just 19K west of Puerto Morelos on
the road to Central Vallarta (west side of highway 307). Guests enjoy
a combination of zip line (tyrolean traverse) jungle canopy tour,
biking and a cenote swim. Prices range from $40 to $60 usd
depending on whichever package you chose. Food, beverages and
souveniers are also available at the main lodge/outfitting center.
Eco Adventure Parks
Xaman Ha Aviary
This aviary is a wonderful natural habitat for over 60 species of tropical
birds who populate the jungles of the Yucatan peninsula. Here you can
see roughly 200 individual birds living in harmony with one another, all
within an open-air sanctuary that has paths and trails leading to the birds'
preferred nesting areas. Xaman Ha Aviary is located in the heart of the
Riviera Maya in Playacar, Playa del Carmen.
Xcaret
Xcaret is one of the largest and arguably the best eco-park on the coast,
we recommend making it an all day affair to get your money’s worth.
Xcaret is loaded with great entertainment including: snorkeling the
underground river, an aquarium, butterfly exhibit, jaguars and pumas,
sea turtles, ruins, a Mayan village, beach, dolphin swim and more. After
a long and fulfilling day experience if you have the energy, stick around
to see Xcaret at Night. A firelight Mayan ceremonial dance, Indiana
Jones style dry cave and concerts in a fantastic amphitheater for
regional music and dancing from around Mexico. Located just south of
Playa Del Carmen.
Cenote “Taj Mahal”
Cenote Taj Mahal is one a cave dive you must do while visiting the
Riviera Maya. Guided Cavern dives take you down a string of light zones
making a dazzling underwater laser-like show. This dive site is a favorite
for both guides and customers alike who constantly return to see the
changes in the underground system as the seasons change. Haloclines in
the deeper areas make interesting mirror like effects as divers penetrate
into the layer of saltwater below the fresh. Keep your eyes open during
this dive to see the decorative stalagmites, stalactites, and shell and coral
fossils amongst the rocks.
Yaax Che Botanical Garden
This is a great half day trip to see tropical plants and trees native to the
Yucatan peninsula, which are all identified with tags yet in a truly natural
setting. The gardens have paths which lead to varied environmental
zones, a senic overlook, small Mayan ruins and an example of a traditional
Maya "palapa home" and Chiclero camp. Monkeys and birds are not
uncommon to see. Located on hwy 307 just south of the entrance to
Puerto Morelos.
