HCA WEST FLORIDA
It is our privilege to serve as the Executive
Leadership of your Pinellas County HCA
hospitals and to have this opportunity
to share with you the partnerships our
hospitals provide to the community.
Your HCA Pinellas County hospitals,
including Edward White Hospital, Largo
Medical Center, Northside Hospital and
St. Petersburg General Hospital have a
significant impact on Pinellas County,
providing more than 3,800 people with
employment and more than $20.9 million
in taxes. We are proud to have more than
a thousand of the area’s most respected
physicians on our medical staffs. We
treated more than 202,000 patients in our
emergency departments in 2012, where
outstanding efforts by our teams continue
to improve quality and operations. Our
hospitals’ average ER wait times are
posted live on our websites. We also invite
residents to text message “ER” to 23000
and respond with a local zip code to
receive the HCA Pinellas County hospital
average emergency room wait times.
While the ER volumes are growing, so is
the number of patients without adequate
health insurance or the financial resources
to pay for this care. We continue to treat a
large percentage of uninsured patients in
the communities we serve.
Providing high quality care remains at
the core of our mission, and we were
honored to have Largo Medical Center,
Northside Hospital and St. Petersburg
General Hospital named in 2012 as 2011
Top Performers for Key Quality Measures
by The Joint Commission. St. Petersburg
General Hospital was named an industry
leader in using evidence based care
processes in the areas of Heart Failure,
Pneumonia and Surgical Care. Largo
Medical Center and Northside Hospital
were recognized for achieving these
performance thresholds for Heart Attack,
Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Surgical
Care. The Leapfrog Safety Hospital score,
a key industry ranking for patient safety,
awarded Edward White Hospital an “A”
rating in 2012.
Our hospitals have done an outstanding
job focusing on quality and operations,
with all HCA Pinellas County hospitals
receiving many national and state clinical
outcome and achievement recognitions.
Florida Blue has named Edward White
Hospital and Largo Medical Center as
Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery.
Largo Medical Center has also received
this distinction for Knee, Hip and Cardiac
Care. The Blue Distinction Centers for
Specialty Care® program is a national
designation awarded by Blue Cross and
Blue Shield companies to medical facilities
that have demonstrated expertise in
delivering quality specialty care.
With one-third of the state’s budget spent
on healthcare, HCA understands the
importance and significance of providing
high quality and cost effective healthcare.
St Petersburg General Hospital continues
to break new ground in minimally invasive
surgery by performing the first successful
robotic single-site hysterectomy in the
Tampa Bay area on Monday, May 13, 2013.
When physicians at Largo Medical Center
and Northside Hospital diagnose a patient
with atrial fibrillation (afib), an irregular
heartbeat, they can now offer innovative
minimally invasive treatment options
through the Convergent Procedure and
Cardiac CryoAblation.
Good patient care requires having the
right information at the right time and
we continue to support our physicians
by providing them secure access to
electronic health information. We are
investing heavily in information technology
to provide quicker and easier access to
health information. At the same time, we
are ensuring that we are in compliance
with Meaningful Use (MU) criteria as we
add new features to our Electronic Health
Record (EHR) system, hCare, and work with
other health care systems and providers
in the communities we serve. Our goal
is to continue to provide quality care to
our community while performing at a high
standard of excellence.

Quality And
Patient Safety
Putting Patients First is the foundation of our culture and passion for providing quality
healthcare. Many of our initiatives serve as national models today, as we lead the way
in adopting best practices to eliminate clinical variations.
Clinical Excellence
HCA West Florida hospitals achieve industry leading performance on public clinical
measures, including CMS Core Measures. We completed 2012 with a preliminary fourth
quarter Core Measures composite inpatient score of 99.78%, and 12 of our 15 hospitals,
including Largo Medical Center, Northside Hospital and St. Petersburg General Hospital
earned national recognition as Top Performers in Key Quality Measures from The Joint
Commission in the areas of Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Surgical Care. This
was the second consecutive year that Largo Medical Center achieved this recognition.

Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) to produce a single score
representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable
harm and medical errors.
Our hospitals are saving lives, reducing complication rates and eliminating unnecessary
costs through a strong focus on quality. We are achieving and exceeding national clinical
goals and benchmarks. These efforts are strongly supported by HCA’s Clinical Services
Group, an industry leader in bringing evidenced based medicine to the bedside in
community hospitals nationwide.
