Illinois State University
show (this year the show was in Edwardsville, Illinois) consists
of setting the entire circus up in a sponsoring town.
Now, the hard work is complete so sit back and watch Pop
Horton's dream come alive again!
Gamma Phi Circus has been a tradition at Illinois State
University since 1929. It was founded by Clifford "Pop" Horton.
Gamma Phi's Foundation was built around traditional gymnastic events. Over the years the Circus has grown to encompass
circus acts such as trapeze and tight wire, among others. Pop
Horton continued to watch the circus grow and change until
his death in 1980.
The current directors of Gamma Phi are Jerry Polacek and
Nick Isaacs. Mr. Polacek has been a part of the circus for the
past 18 years. He participated with the 1967 circus while he was
a graduate student. Currently he is a full-time faculty member
of the department that sponsors Gamma Phi, the department of
Health, Physical .Education, Recreation, and Dance. During
the summer, Mr. Polacek directs the McLean County Crippled
Children's Camp. Jerry's wife was also a member of Gamma Phi
as is his daughter, Lisa.
Nick Isaacs has been involved with Gamma Phi since he
became a member in 1969. While a member, Mr. Isaacs held the
titles of vice-president and president, and was also a recipient of
the Max Honn award. He is currently a full-time firefighter in
Bloomington in addition to his responsibilities as co-director
of Gamma Phi. His wife, Pamela Isaacs, was also a member of
Gamma Phi. They have 3 children, Christina, Cassandra, and
Nikki.
In addition to the two shows being perfonned this weekend, Gamma Phi perfonns in a number of exhibitions and roadshows. The 20-30 exhibitions each year are usually assembly programs, workshops, or public relation perfonnances. The road

The Junior Gamma
Circus is in its second
year at Metcalf laboratory School. Fashioned
after the ISU Gamma Phi
Circus, the junior version involves students
in grades 2-8. The 1989
Junior Circus has 90
members and practices
once a week after school.
The circus perfonns several exhibitions during
the year as well as a full
length show, this year scheduled for April 28 at 7:00 p.m.
The Circus is Directed by Dr. Tom Romance assisted by
fellow Lab School teachers: Bonnie Howard and Kathy Cooney.
ISU Gamma Phi members assisting this year are: Dee Dee
McGarvy, Brian Henryson, Kevin Haines, and Melissa Wright.
As a side note - Membership in Gamma Phi is open to all
full-time students and faculty/staff at ISU. Dr. Romance is in
the process of joining Gamma Phi and will appear this evening
in the juggling and unicycle act.

Originally titled the Service Pin Award of Gamma Phi, this
award was renamed the Max Honn Service Award in 1973, in
honor of Max Honn, an Industrial Technology department
faculty member from 1932-1973. Honn helped print Gamma
Phi Circus posters for many years.

In 1986, the Gamma Phi membership developed a structure through which alumni and friends may assist the organization in
maintaining its traditions. It is called PROMISES OF PEOPLE SHARING or POPS (for obvious reasons). Gamma Phi has meant a
great deal to its alumni and friends not only during their college years, but throughout their lives. The workouts, exhibitions, tryouts,
road shows, committee meetings, costumes, on-campus shows, parties, friends, and the sharing of the pleasures and adversities
connected with their circus years are memories which will never be forgotten. For sure, all have a special place in the hearts of those
who have been associated with Gamma Phi.
Over the past three years, the ISU Foundation has been accepting contributions specifically for Gamma Phi Circus. To date over
$9,000 has been raised. The donations have allowed the circus to purchase a portable tightwire, a new perch pole, mats, small pieces of
equipment as well as the dazzling costumes you will see tonight. Charter members and this year's contributors are listed below ... we
