Illinois State University
Welcome to the 51st annual GAMMA PHI CIRCUS.
GAMMA PHI is the oldest and largest collegiate circus in
the nation. It was founded in 1929 (58 years ago) by Dr.
Clifford "Pop" Horton as an honorary gymnastics fraternity. Beginning with 12 men who performed local gymnastics demonstrations, GAMMA PHI has grown to include the
70 young men and women who will be performing for you
this evening. There are over 900 alumni of GAMMA PHI
who are joined by a common love for the circus. Through
the years, GAMMA PHI CIRCUS has meant a great deal to
its members. Many have remained active with the organization after graduation by helping with equipment during the
on-campus shows, by becoming members of our ISU foundation club called POPS (see details inside this program),
and in many other ways. For instance, the cover and center
section logo were developed by members Kurt Hendershot
and Jay Bensen respectively. The current directors of the
circus Jerry Polacek and Nick Isaacs are also members of
GAMMA PHI.
GAMMA PHI is sponsored by the Department of
Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. During a typical year, GAMMA PHI presents 20-30 assembly
programs, workshops, and public relation performances.
Many GAMMA PHI members have performed shows in
Busch Gardens, Marriott's Great America, Disney World,
Circus Hallelujah. This year our members performed on
WGN-TV's Bozo's Circus which aired on April 15, 16, 17 &
22. In addition, a road show or two is performed each year.
For this type of show, the circus (aerial acts and all) is set
up in a sponsoring town. It includes all the circus members
plus the ISU Jazz Ensemble which is directed by James
Boitos. This year's road shows were in Canton and Arcola,
IL.
Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy the 51st edition of
Illinois State University's GAMMA PHI CIRCUS!!!!!!!!

Originally titled the Service Pin Award of Gamma Phi, this
award was renamed the Max Honn Service Award in 1973, in
honor of Max Honn, an Industrial Technology department
faculty member from 1932-1973. Honn helped print Gamma
Phi Circus posters for many years.
Each year, Gamma Phi performers select the member or
members they think most deserving of the award. It is the
highest honor the fraternity can bestow upon one of its
members. Factors considered in the election are committee
membership, offices held, attendance at exhibitions and general
service to the organization. All candidates must be at least
three-year members of Gamma Phi.

Last year, the Gamma Phi membership developed a structure through which alumni and friends may assist the organization in
maintaining its traditions. It is called PROMISES OF PEOPLE SHARING or POPS (for obvious reasons). Gamma Phi has meant a
great deal to its alumni and friends not only during their college years, but throughout their lives. The workouts, exhibitions, tryouts,
road shows, committee meetings, costumes, on-campus shows, parties, friends, and the sharing of the pleasures and adversities
connected with their circus years are memories which will never be forgotten. For sure, all have a special place in the hearts of those
who have been associated with Gamma Phi.
Over the past 12 months, the ISU Foundation has been accepting contributions specifically for Gamma Phi Circus. To date over
$5,200 has been raised. Those donations have allowed the circus to purchase a portable tightwire, a new perch pole, mats, small pieces
of equipment as well as the dazzeling costumes you will see tonight. The charter members* and this year's contributors are listed
below ........ we thank them all!!!!!

Remembering Circus Past
By Bill Jaeger, Historian
The date-1931-32, the place-McCormick Gymnasium, the event-the first on-campus performance. The following year marked the beginning of a Gamma Phi
tradition, which was an exciting and beautiful addition to the show, the Circus Queen and her Court.
The Gammma Phi Queen was the first such election of a queen for any campus group. Until its demise in 1968-69, coronation of the queen and her court was a
campus wide event. Any organization could nominate an individual to represent their group, who then would be placed on a ballot from which the entire campus could
choose. Results of the election would be announced to the campus through the Vidette.
The Queen's duty was to command the performance to begin and with her Court would reign over the show.

How To Join Gamma
Phi Circus ...
Membership in Gamma Phi is open to full-time Illinois State
University students, faculty or staff, regardless of major field of study
and gymnastics background.
Both active members and pledges seeking membership attend
weekly Monday night (Second Semester-Monday and Thursday
nights) practices beginning the first Monday when school starts.
Pledges and actives work together all fall on setting up and taking
down equipment, learning skills, putting together acts, participating
in committee work and exhibitions, and most importantly-developing
friendships that last forever. In late October, pledges compete with
each other on at least two events. During the tryout, pledges are
judged on their progress in developing skill, exploring more than one
piece of equipment, cooperation, variety and execution of tricks in
routines (with emphasis on form, poise and style), and coordination,
including potential as a circus performer. Only those chosen by the
sponsors and members are allowed to continue their pledgeship.
Actives and pledges who pass the first hurdle try out for at least
two circus acts. Those who make these acts then participate in the
annual road shows and on-campus shows.
Although membership in GAMMA PHI requires hard work, dedication and adherence to circus rules, the group is permeated by a spirit
of cooperation and "togetherness." And, as tonight's performance
shows, the effort pays many dividends!
