Scouting The Fighting Saints
Coming off their second Clark Cup title in three seasons, Dubuque has
been one of the most successful teams in the USHL since joining the
league in 2010. This season has been no exception, as the Saints sit in
second place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference. Dubuque has won all six
of their contests in front of their home fans at the Mystique Community
Ice Center. With a balanced scoring attack led by forward Dylan Gambrell,
who leads the team in scoring with three goals and eight assists, the
Fighting Saints have made up for the loss of some of their outstanding
offensive talent from last year’s team. Dubuque has four players tied for
the team lead in goal scoring, each with four tallies. They include forwards
Jason Ford, Shane Kavanagh, Seamus Malone and defenseman Phil Boje.
Defensively, the team ranks third in the USHL, allowing just 2.2 goals per
game. Former Storm goaltender Christian Frey has assumed the starting
role in between the pipes and has a record of 7-1-0 in eight games with a
goals against average of 1.74 and a save percentage of .930. Friday’s game
is the first of two meetings between the two teams this season. The last
time the Storm were in Dubuque was on opening night of the 2012-13
season. A year ago the Fighting Saints won both matchups.
Lancers Control Play To Defeat Storm
The Omaha Lancers got ahead early and stayed in front to defeat
the Tri-City Storm 5-2 on Friday night at the Viaero Event Center. Joel
L’Esperance and Chris Wilkie each scored late goals to keep the Storm
in the game. For L’Esperance, it was his team-leading fifth tally, while
Wilkie notched his second of the year.

TRI-CITY STORM HOCKEY
STORM IN BRIEF
Horn Making Things Happen
Recently added forward Christian Horn has heated up his play
over the past few weeks. In his last four games, Horn has factored
into seven Storm goals, picking up a goal and six assists. Those
numbers now have him as the second leading scorer on the team.
Horn made quite the impression in his first game at the Viaero
Event Center on Oct. 30, scoring a goal and three assists in a 4-2
win over Waterloo. He then followed that performance up with
another assist in a win over Lincoln on Friday night. In the Storm’s
most recent loss to Omaha on Nov. 8, Horn had assists on both
of the goals his team scored. The Plymouth, Minn. native left the
University of Minnesota for the USHL and Tri-City, and hopes to
continue to be a difference-maker for the Storm this season.
Poganski Wins Gold
Storm forward Austin Poganski and Team USA defeated Russia 4-1
to earn a gold medal in the World Junior A Challenge on Sunday
in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. It is the fifth gold medal in the last
six years for USA, a team that consists entirely of United States
Hockey League talent. This year’s squad, made up of 22 USHL
players, had a perfect 4-0-0 record and outscored their opponents
23-10 en route to the championship. Poganski was in the lineup
during all four wins, and recorded an assist in the final game on
a goal by Andrew Oglevie, who plays for Cedar Rapids. The St.
Cloud, Minn. native missed four Storm contests while he was in
Canada, but he is now back with the team and is expected to be in
the lineup tonight for the game with Dubuque.
L’Esperance Leading The Way
Brighton, Mich. native Joel L’Esperance is leading the Storm in
scoring through the team’s first 13 games, racking up five goals and
four assists. Most recently, the forward has four points in his last
four contests, three of which have been goals. The Michigan Tech
commit scored twice in a win over Waterloo on Oct. 30, then had an
assist against Lincoln on Nov. 1 and a goal in his team’s most recent
game against Omaha on Nov. 8. After an injury early on last season,
L’Esperance came on late in the year, and was one of the team’s
leading scorers down the stretch. He finished his first full season in
the USHL with 10 goals and nine assists in 49 games and had the
highest point total of all the Storm returners this season.
Hitting The Road
The Storm are beginning a five-game road trip away from the
friendly confines of the Viaero Event Center. The trip starts with a
matchup against Dubuque on Friday and a trek west to face Sioux
Falls on Saturday. Next week, the Storm head out for three games.
They will see the Chicago Steel on Nov. 22 and then continue to
Ann Arbor to face Team USA on Nov. 23 and 24.

The 2013-14 Tri-City Storm season marks the 14th year of
hockey in the heartland. Since the Storm kicked off its inaugural season in 2000 there has been plenty of drama and excitement. But the 2003-04 season will forever be remembered in
Kearney.
In just their fourth season, the Storm had the perfect mix of
skill and toughness to delight their fans with 43 wins, a franchise record.
Tri-City racked up 91 total points and brought home the Anderson Cup, the trophy awarded to the USHL franchise with
the most points during the regular season. The Storm also
recieved recognition as the USHL Organization of the Year for
the second time in their history.
It was just the first full season for Head Coach Bliss Littler, who
had taken the reigns midway through the 2002-03 season. Littler remained in control of the coaching duties
until the end of the 2007-08 season.
Five players from the Anderson Cup winning team went on to play professionally in the National Hockey
League including Bill Thomas, Steve Wagner, Jack Hillen, Peter Mannino and Christian Hanson. Hillen is still

the NHL, starting the season with the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League.
All throughout the 2013-14 season the Storm will be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their success in
2003-04, culminating in Anderson Cup Tribute Night against the Lincoln Stars on April 5.
